The Series XJ was unquestionably one of Jaguar’s best cars, rationalising its complex executive saloon range of the mid-1960s (Mk2, S-Type, 420G, 420/Mk10, plus Daimler 250 among others…) and competing with the best luxury cars in the world. The combination of understated beauty, a fantastic ride, upmarket interior and strong performance from the XK six-cylinder and V12 engines was arguably best realised in the Series 3 XJ, the Pininfarina-designed facelift of 1979. These days it’s a must-have classic Jaguar icon and Joe took a luxurious Daimler 4.2 for a drive to explain why we love it so much!

😀😅 One of the nicest Jaguar body shapes they ever built. Made back in the day when cars were still beautiful to look at from any angle. A most unusual colour for this example, but i like it !.......................😊

The XJ6 is the most beautiful saloon car ever made. Name a saloon car which is more beautiful? I cannot think of one. In terms of British competition, only the Rover P6B 3500/3500S came remotely close to the XJ6. The XJ6 oozes class, it's a proper prestige car- not like the soulless, plastic, sensor laden rubbish built today.

Sir William Lyons had an eye for beauty. No other car designer has such a great portfolio: the SS pre-war cars, XK120, Mark v, Vii and Ix, Mark II and XJ. What a run of achingly beautiful cars.❤

A Series 3 Daimler Double 6 is the best car I have ever driven. The father of an old girlfriend from the early 80's had a brand new one. One night he asked me to drive him and his wife to a party they were attending. I thought that he meant in my Mk2 Escort, until he gave me the key to the Daimler. The next day he asked me how fast I'd driven on the way back. I won't tell you, but I did tell him (minus 10mph). He just laughed and said "yeah of course you did!" I love Series 3s!!!

I've had about a dozen old Jags. I've never had a truly bad one, although admittedly, not everything works all of the time. My favourite was a B reg 4.2 Sovereign finished in Silversand. Currently driving a X300, which is probably the most reliable Jag, but misses some of the charms of the Series 3 cars.

Even the original XJ (especially with the series 2 facelift) still looks beautiful today. A truly timeless visual design. It's actually only the interior that dates them, and not the exterior styling! And that Jag smell is something you have to know to "know."

I have a series 3 Sovereign V12. It was my Uncle’s company car when we worked together. He steadfastly refused to change it for an X308 XJR, despite many offers on my part. He passed ten years ago and I still have the car. It is SO special I just can’t get rid of it.

A blue 1986 Jaguar XJ6 was my first car. I learned to drive in my Dads Vanden Plas. It was a love/hate relationship. It had all the power a teenager could want and gas was cheap enough to fill both tanks back then. It was constantly in the shop. I was way too hard on it being a teenager and ended up running it into a stop sign going 80mph.

If we take the XJ13 out of the equation then this could be my most favourite Jag of all. If I had that imaginary £100,000 for an executive saloon, I'd buy a decent Double Six and then give it to someone like Eagle to iron out all the inconsistencies and to bring it more into the 21st century. I like the X308 but this model - this is the one imho. In this Cashmere Gold please...

I'm currently driving an xj308, as it is the last of the xj series. Series 3 is my ultimate dream car, although flawed in many ways, the ride is up there with the best. One of my friends has about 6 jags from mk2's to xjs' and a few Daimler models as well, he used to make his own wiring harnesses and upgrade electrical components, as a living he made a fortune then retired from it 😄 As an aside, I think some people are struck with a fondness of these from a certain whitesnake video....... 😄

My Double six is the same colour , fresh from Japan 2 years ago with 20 k on the clock , and following my disastrous affair with two 7 series BMW's I wisely went back to a series 3 and have not regretted it once . The ride and quality of the car is only something BMW engineers could only dream of and the Daimler is reliable as the sunrise . No electronic gremlins , suspension groans and bumps that beset the BMW and its a car that other motorists give way to . .

In 1994 I was in the market for one of these, I was looking for a 1987 specifically. Didn't find one but did buy a 1984 XJ-S. These chassis are wonderful things, soak up all the bumps but still capable of a good pace. I kept the XJ-S for two years, I paid $7,500 for it, sold it for $7,250, having only done tires and oil changes, it was an excellent car. After a long break from Jaguars I now have a 2016 F-Type 3.0 S manual transmission coupe, a different class of car but one that feels special in its own way. I won't be driving it again until late April, I live in New Hampshire, USA, the roads are salted here, the car has never seen salt and it won't as long as I have it. A few months ago I started looking for another XJ6 Series 3, found a nice one, appeared pretty much rust free, asking price was $24,000 though. Then I started looking at 2006-2009 XJ8s, similar styling and ethos but modern technology. Long story short(er), a 2006 XJ8 VDP is being delivered today, black cherry over black, 80,000 miles, just got a new headliner, riding on coil-overs. Buying a Jaguar, or any used car, is always a gamble, time will tell.

There is a carriage from around the same period which was as much as to look at as it was a joy to drive. So joyous was this driving the said carriage was compared not only to the XJ6 but also to the CX. It's too much to ask, but one would like to enjoy the pleasure of seeing this channel give the Peugeot 6O4 an assessment. Merry Christ-mas.

I look at all the modern 'pace' junk, rattling diesels, SUV's and the XE/XF nonentities and shake my head. How did they ruin Jaguar so comprehensively? The old XJ was such a 'personal' car, so pretty and so ridiculously inexpensive when new. Back in the seventies and eighties I wouldn't even have considered a Mercedes or BMW over a Jaguar. You knew the reliability was a bit suspect....but.......just look at it. The later injection 4.2 was such a good engine as well.

When the Series 4 Jaguar XJ cars came out (XJ40) in late 1986 with straighter lines than the series 3. the biggest engine models 5.3 Jaguar XJ12 and Daimler Double Six continued in the shape of the Series 3 until 1993 because the engine would not fit under the bonnet of the Series 4.

Totally agree, why buy something boring and reliable like a merc. If you want reliability, buy something new. A classic needs quirks, that’s what makes them so much more special to drive than a modern car. That jag has quirks all over.
