I agree with the chick in the end, it isn't a thing about being a culture vulture since Brooklyn and New York has a giant history of mixing cultures. I could understand in some-way how it can been seen a disrespectful, I don't fully agree just on concept but I can understand their argument. This is me commenting on DJ Clark Kent's argument. That MAYBE the people who made a Pizza Patty didn't consider it was a food that has cultural significance (even though a lot of food has cultural significance everywhere, no surprise) What I don't agree with is even with an understanding of culture and food culture, you can have a RIGHT traditional way to make food and unconventional, but it isn't wrong. Maybe there could be a middle ground. Before truly deconstructing it and adding something like New York Pizza ingredients, look at other ingredients that Caribbean's commonly use; vegetables, spices, Caribbean Cheddar. Take it further and explore whichever way you might want to with food. Lastly I got to say, not like DJ Clark Kent offended me, hell no. Just got a different opinion. If you enjoy a food a certain way and you like it that one way? No issue, it's what you like. I wouldn't want a watered-down mass market version to truly take away from those Brooklyn spots either (which I doubt ever would happen) You want people to understand the culture of the food? That isn't wrong either. Just let people explore food however they want, whatever they'd want to do with it. Give some maybe the authentic first, but there is no issue in my eyes of mixing cultures. Build bridges between cultures, might make it easier for other people willing to learn and partake in other's culture.

I tasted pizza shop, grocery and Jamaican hand made beef patties. There is a huge difference in how it tastes and how it feels. When you bite into a pre-frozen beef patty you can tell its soggy and bland. When you bite into a hand made, fresh and oven baked Jamaican beef patty from a Jamaiacan mom and pop shop it tastes amazing, spices and beef flavor with the soft crust breading.

I make patties every week for my children.If you can't taste the scotch bonnet and curry than it's likely trash.It has to be spicy just like how our grandmothers made it and enjoyed with a glass of Guinness punch.

I lived in the Caribbean for a year and a half. Little island called Anguilla. They had one real bakery that would open at 5am and close a little past noon. They easily sold hundreds of beef pattys a day. You had to race to get them before they were gone. My god were they heavenly. I'm back in NY now, and some of these pattys around here are great, but never as fresh as that little bakery.

There are places in Jamaica where you can buy a patty with beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, lobster, cheese...and more. Not just beef

Many cultures have versions of this. Italians have the calzone and stromboli, Brazil has the pastel, Indians have Samosas, college kids have hot pockets. It just seems to me that it's a convenient way of getting nutrition on the go, so many cultures have adapted their own.

I'm from Toronto and I was basically raised on beef patties. $1 would get you a pop n patty at the variety store by my school. I moved to Edmonton and was over the moon to find a little West Indian grocery store that sells patties. The brand I LOVE too. If it's not Tinnel's I promise you, I don't fuck with it. Tinnel's patties make me not miss my city so much.
