Why The Legend of Zelda Isn't The Legend of Link

Let's discover what it is that makes Zelda a legend!
In this video, we delve into the Japanese text of the Zelda games to uncover fascinating details that explain why the series is titled The Legend of Zelda. One such detail is the term "Miko" that the Japanese versions of the series use to refer to Zelda. One of the roles of a Miko involves serving as a bridge between the divine and mortal worlds - this helps us understand the nature of Zelda's connection to Hylia.
This video highlights and explains various religious Japanese words in the Zelda games, each with untranslatable nuances that, once understood, contributes to a deeper understanding of the series' mythology.
What is Link? • What is Link? The Lege...
All translations in the video have been completed by me. As always, due to the complex nature of language, another may choose to translate differently!

Tears of the Kingdom I think does a great job at reminding you of the game name. You play as Link, yes, and you, as Link, destroy the big baddie, but Zelda was the one who set everything in motion for it to happen.

I don't believe that all the translations are disastrous, as language is insanely complicated. Finding the perfect translation for each word and sentence within the limited space of a text box is a massive challenge! Many Japanese words carry nuances that can't be rendered to English very easily without providing additional explanations, too. With that said, there are definitely occasions when the translations we were given are wrong- like how Impa tells Zelda in Japanese at the end of SS that Zelda will look after the Triforce. Whereas in English Impa says she will inherit that role. Either way, analysing the Japanese text is super fun to do, and I feel the same way as you! Finding a new way to appreciate the depth of Zelda lore is an amazing feeling!

It's a nice surprise for me the Spanish version is soooo accurate with the Japanese one. And in Tears of the Kingdom in the sidequest about ancient text in hylian from a Sonia's lady-in-waiting says Sonia before her marriage was a miko (sacerdotisa) of Hylia. @@kevinbaumhoer7359 in the original the game was always supposed to be meta. The tri force was the concept of the game play I. E. Action, suspense, thrills, the "story" which is a meta in media res fable that's a vessel for a "player" which is why he's called link and meant to be such an empty vessel. Link embodies courage what moves along the world, by tempering power with wisdom to overcome fear. The original Zelda was based on Peter Pan and the legend of Zelda is an ongoing world of Neverland, and each is topical while managing not to be political, and each teach you a really really harsh truth about life. The Meta aspects of it are meant to break the forth wall just as the original save chip was symbolised by the 3rd aspect of the tri force. We have the story(s), we have the world and the enemies and the mechanics, now we have the ability for the user himself to save his "state" so he can explore and do what he does and his actions and the consequences really impact the "game". Zelda has always been Mario but way more fleshed out and with a lesson that is a projection of the story and asks us to ask ourselves what we'd do. That's why the story doesn't hold your hand and you can beat it any way you want or you can find as much story in its fractal world as you want. You can also beat the game baked and naked by sheer skill since with enough knowledge and mastery j e. Wisdom, and courage, you have all the power you'd ever need. The fable structure seems childish only because people think their own actions down matter and what you put in is like with anything else what you get out. You can spam the world with bs or you can make the world paradisical. And not care what anyone else says. Japan went through extremely tough times in the recent past so they're just really good story tellers that manage to do refine gaming better than anyone else can even with 1/50 the "assets". Have you ever beaten any zelda since links awakening and not felt haunted? Or the shock of adult hood, or the realisation that you are just as responsible to "save the world" as anyone else. Links awakening set the stage for a Minerva like Zelda with a fairy and Peter pan like avatar. You always start off naked and harmless like anyone else. Ocarina of time fleshed out the world in 3D but kept the Meta music and how music has the power to unlock memories and make memories just as artfully as a sword could. And a sling shot is often more powerful than a sword. Where Mario breaks the 4th wall by making the game very apparently a game such that you can find hidden mechanics like ducking to fall "behind the scenes" to run past the "ending" to discover a warp point. And it rewards you for thinking outside the box. Zelda takes it a step further and fleshed out what'd be a Mario game with a fable about current events and your current existence in the ongoing world of in media res. Breath of the wild is a reboot back to how Zelda 1 would have been if possible. But it still challenges you to learn the mechanics and exploit it to play and beat the game however you want. Alls fair if it's consistent to the mechanics of the world. This isnt foriegn to Nintendo. Pokémon teaches you how to handle credit and finances, through earning trust and learning what to use when no different than I have my 5 main credit cards that I use as weapons to score bonuses and perks that I earned. An example of the out of the box thinking the game teaches you through a meta worldview is how people see the Biden credit score "attack on good credit" as a bad thing when anyone with good credit can just go on to excellent or deliberately duck your credit. As long as you're either above or below the range you wouldn't be penalised. But people complain as if it's not in their hands to just do whatever it takes to exploit the game and if it's fair then it's fair. Anyone with good credit shouldn't be offended that they would take a penalty if they bought a house when they could simply take out a temporary cash loan then pay it back as soon as you are cleared of the credit check. So the punishment on those with good credit is just a punishment on those who don't know how to adapt which is entirely up to you. The attack on good credit isn't an attack on anything. Anyone with good credit is likely bordering on 800. You can do one of 2 things to escape the good credit penalty. Drop to fair temporarily or boost to excellent.

They’re so well done and informative, they’ve increased my enjoyment of the series a ton. I have a question maybe you can answer: in BotW, in the King’s and Zelda’s diaries in English they reference a “fortuneteller’s prediction” and “oracle’s prophesy” when talking about why they think Calamity Ganon was about to re-emerge. Does the Japanese text for fortune teller/oracle and prediction/prophecy have deeper Shinto or some other Japanese cultural meaning that doesn’t translate well into English? There’s a theory that the oracle was evil and made the prediction to trick them into digging up the guardians and divine beasts for Ganon to possess, but I’ve always thought whether or not that makes sense depends on if the Japanese text has meanings that are absent in English.
@Sarah_H
@Sarah_H Год назад
I think it's like Doctor Strange from Infinity War having to give up the Time Stone for things to happen as they needed to. The Oracle NEEDED to give that prediction, because without that prediction, the ancient Sheikah technology wouldn't have been dug up, then Ganon wouldn't have possessed it and destroyed the kingdom of Hyrule, then Link wouldn't have been put in the Shrine of Resurrection, then Link would have never been able to defeat Ganon because he otherwise would have never obtained the tools he needed to do so. That doesn't make the Oracle "evil", it just means they played their part in Hyrule's fate

I hope some day the day arrives…

Fantastic content! The phrasing of Zelda's prophecies and foresight as divine messages is super interesting. Although I think it's a mistake to treat Zelda *exactly* like a Shinto shrine maiden, she still exists as a character in a distinct fantasy universe, and Skyward Sword makes it clear that Hylia sacrificed her divine form to become mortal. It makes more sense for the divine messages to come from somewhere else, such as directly from the Triforce of Wisdom. This also ties into the fact that the land of Hyrule is inherently linked to the Triforce, to the point that destroying the Triforce means plunging Hyrule into ruin (as explained in Link Between Worlds). Zelda receiving messages from the Triforce would then be a way to show that she is deeply connected to the land itself, and THAT is why it's the Legend of Zelda.

The video is great and I learned a lot from it, however I do see a problem with it. The lore you've presented certainly provides a LOT of rational reasons for calling the series The Legend of Zelda, but that lore wasn't there when the 1st game was made. Since it had a very basic story and Zelda was barely in it, there must have been a different reason why the series was initially called by its title. The reason the rest of the games are called The Legend of Zelda is due to story and marketing inertia. It would cause no end of problems for years if they changed the series name at any point after the 1st game, therefore the reason the series has its name MUST come from the development of the 1st game, and your arguments don't address that.

Thank you! Yeah for sure! I do not believe that everything I've shared in this video to be a non-exhaustive breakdown on why the series is titled The Legend of Zelda ^^ I try to highlight some things from a lore perspective that I think is fascinating and isn't spoken about very much. There is so, so much more to why the series is called TLoZ! Speaking from a game development perspective, you are absolutely right that the lore wasn't there when the first game was made. But instead, it was established as the series developed. Marketing definitely plays a role in it, but for me personally, I have more fun analysing the lore the developers created!

Minor spoiler form the on of the first few missions (first memory basically) of TOTK coming up in my comment. Avoid if you don't want to be spoiled. Now, in TOTK we have Rauru, which is the new Weird like character (black with pointy ears) the one we saw in all the trailers, say that he is a Zonai, and he created the kingdom of Hyrule. I haven't finished the game nor the story yet, so no clue what all this means in the end, but, it seems contradicting with all the previous stories

In the German version of BOTW, Zelda is referred to as "Hohepriesterin (von Hyrule)" by the Deku Tree, meaning "High Priestess" (of Hyrule) I also found this on Google/Wikipedia about the High Priestess tarot card lol: "The High Priestess is identified with the Shekhinah, the female indwelling presence of the divine. [...]" Coincidence?

Depending on how you use kami, it also means paper. It's interesting to think that The Legend of Zelda games went from being puzzle games to having a story to them.

None of this explains why we need FOUR Spirit Orbs to get a new heart or stamina vessel, thereby throwing a kink into the time honored "three" theme of the series.
@QuestWithAaron
@QuestWithAaron Год назад
You're right! I wonder why it is four. In TP we needed five pieces of heart to get a full container because of the size of the game, but I'd like to find a reason that connects to the lore, if there is one.
@Oznerock
@Oznerock Год назад
4 pieces of heart is also tradition in every game other than TP, so I think it's just what they defaulted to given the Spirit Orbs are just this game's pieces of heart.

Great video. Does in Hylia manifest in statues because Hylians worship her? Like her original self reincarnates perpetually but bunrei of Hylia become enshrined in sacred locations.
@QuestWithAaron
@QuestWithAaron 4 месяца назад
It's very likely that Hylia's presence is so strong because of how much she is worshipped and revered by the people of Hyrule. This is a prominent thing with Japanese "kami". When they are neglected they can become an "oni" or a demon. It's quite interesting to think about!

According to Shigeru Miyamoto, co-creator,designer of The Legend of Zelda 1986 series,Princess Zelda's name was inspired by Zelda Fitzgerald, an American novelist, dancer, and socialite, as well as the wife of fellow novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.After Miyamoto's reasoning was she was “a famous and beautiful woman from all accounts.”Her name had a ring to it that Miyamoto liked, so he borrowed it by making her Logo name,that we all known today as:The Legend of Zelda Fanchanise!
