Consider this: People purchase one-effect pedals all the time. At that price, it's a great fill-in-the-blanks pedal.

I already have all the pedals that make up the core of my tone. I’ve been looking into some pretty expensive pedals for some one-off effects that I don’t use as often. This fits the bill really well. This pedal is 100% for me and I will be buying one. Edit: ended up buying one “used” for 250 (used is in quotes here because when it arrived it was clear that it was absolutely brand new) and I couldn’t be happier. It was absolutely the right decision.

Agreed. Even a POG pico is $240. If I opt for a fancy harmony effect like the Hedra, that's $300. So, the HX One (perhaps used, or with a discount code), is worth it for the harmony/octave effects alone. Combine that with a looper and tuner...I think it's worth it. I use a UA Ruby for amp sim, so I don't need it to be my amp anyway.

Have you looked into the Zoom Multi Stomp or the M5? Both are half the price of this new pedal. The multi stomp has many effects Line6 doesn’t have (especially if you download the effects manager software that someone made online. It lets you load in effects from other zoom products). And it can do amp modeling and up to 6 effects at once. Or the Line6 M5, which is really what this thing is designed to replace. The M5 has all of the legacy effects, which make up about half of what is in this new pedal. As an owner of the Hx stomp, I can say I actually do use the legacy effects often because some of them are better or just as good as the new versions of those effects. The new “dynamic” series of reverbs are better and I do like the Transistor Tape Delay. But otherwise, I’m usually using those legacy effects. They completely hold up - even the overdrives.

It's straightforward: for sessions, recording at home, function bands etc. It makes total sense when you just need to create one sound only for one song. I'll keep stuff like drives, chorus and delay on the board and use this for the esoteric stuff.

Yep, you nailed it! I used to have a spot on my pedalboard that would have a different pedal on it every time I changed bands or filled in for someone etc. I would just put one of these on my board now, no special power requirement, true of buffer bypass and a looper for practicing.

I can understand the limitations for guitarists, but as a bassist this is a dream pedal! For the most part we are only using one effect at a time. Now I do have a 16 pedal mostly analog board I’ll never give up. But what I’ll do with this is run it in a separate Boss LS-2 loop where I can blend it with all my other effects in my other loop! When I’m space limited or can’t bring my big board this is a great and easy backup. Also for my home studio recording it’s simple! $300? C’mon folks what’s not for a bass player to love?

Poly Pitch was my first thought as well, however the fact that it can do poly pitch at all with however much DSP this thing has proves they could easily do two fx combos. And in my opinion they could easily do this without comprising the vision of simplicity. Just do combo fx blocks that preset a reverb and a delay, like a UA Del Verb. Or a compressor/boost drive combo. It doesn’t have to be menu divey in order to offer far more bang for buck.

Folks keep yammering on about this not being anything anyone asked for... which is objectively false. It's clearly the replacement and update of the M5 which has a very loyal following and still lives on many pro player boards. It runs on a standard 9V power supply, and takes up a regular pedal space on a board. It's a swiss army knife for people who have zero interest or use in the Stomp or full Helix. The argument that it's not a good value, because "it's only one effect" is also nonsense, when people fall all over themselves throwing money at less capable Eventide and UA one trick pony pedals. If it's not for you, that's cool. They're still going to sell like hotcakes.

My first thought was that this is an add-on for current modeler users. I never look at the DSP-devouring pitch effects because of the compromises I’d have to make in my Helix. I play in church, where key changes for the same songs are the norm. I’d consider one of these before I would a Digitech drop pedal. To me, this means Helix 2 is not coming anytime soon.

I have Helix Floor, hx stomp, and hx effects already. As I think about it, there are times it would be great to have the HX One to expand what I have, or if just going to a jam and don't want to take a full board. To expand a Hx Stomp, for example, you could use midi to change a snapshot and select a specific effect on the HX one.

Their product people will have done their research and validated the market for this latest gizmo. It will most probably sell a ton of units whether anyone was asking for it or not. I actually preordered one yesterday, even though I currently run the HX Stomp. I am trying to downsize my rig to a smaller setup/pedalboard and will use it as the final slot on the board for everything that does not justify a standalone pedal. I used the M5 before for the stomp, but it is too large and the new Helix stuff sounds better imo. The HX stomp could probably replace my full setup alone, but I really like pedals and never really got comfortable with modelling.

@@user-qd9mm5mt4i I think the plan is for it to be $300, but for those of us who already have Helix products, it may be a bit of a hard sell. However, on my *other* pedalboard, this might find a place eventually. I used to have a Digitech iStomp back in the day which was way before its time and it was a failure for the company. It was a pedal that you could install any one of a dozen or so effects; super flexible for its time. The M5 and the HX One feel similar to me. @TheDilligan How does this differ from the M5? Does it just have more tones/options, and/or improved tone quality? They’re both Line6 single-effect-at-a-time pedals, so…..?
@TheDilligan
@TheDilligan 9 месяцев назад
@@pwlebrun4573 So Line6 used to have the "4 series" of effects pedals. The most famous one of course is the DL4. They then had the M-Series of multi-effects units, which would combine all of the 4-series effects together. The M13 can do 4 of these effects at once, the M9 can do three, the M5 can do one effect at a time. Now Line6 has progressed past the M-series and does the HX series. The effects models from the M-series are included in all of the HX units under the category of "legacy". None of those old effects are bad, but they are from a previous generation of effects modeling. The HX pedals have way more effects. Some of them are modern redo's of those legacy effects and others are totally new. The HX EFfects and HX one are the closest thing to the M series, while The HX stomp and Helix also include Amp modeling more complex signal routing. Also, Unlike the M series, the HX series receives updates. Line6 releases updates couple times a year, adding new effects and new amps. So the HX one has all of the HX effects, but none of the amps. This includes all of the legacy effects as well that come in the M5. Additionally I think there are upgrades to the hardware, A/D conversion, and higher internal sample rates. None of this makes the M5 bad. But the HX one would indeed have every effect the M5 has, sound a little better on those effects, has about 140 additional effects and will probably be included in future updates.

I think it could be for me, like others i can see a use on my board for that one effect that i just need ‘sometimes’ ie that isn’t part of my core tone or other main requirements, for me that is probably stuff like phase, flange, chorus, and maybe some of the more ambient delay or verbs etc that you just need for that one song in the set, but cant justify adding 3 or 4 other pedals to the board to make that happen. For that i think it’s a great idea.

Yeah I agree that it’s target market would seem to be for those of us who don’t want to program multi effects, but would find the ability to access many effects as a ‘one off’ useful and would integrate it with their regular effects The main issue is placement as obviously in most instances you’d want time based effects near the end of your chain, but drives- and especially something like the Poly Capo (which could be really useful) near the front. So on that basis it’s usefulness is again restricted.
@JohnMcGFrance
@JohnMcGFrance 8 месяцев назад
I can see it being useful as a kind of utility pedal on a board. I often need an effect for one song but don’t want a pedal on my board that just does that effect. This could replace 3 or 4 pedals and be quality too. But, many people don’t gig. For them I think they want something that does more, like the hx stomp. It’s good value and maybe cheap enough for many to buy one just to cover gaps in their fx arsenal. I was hoping for a reduced version of the hx stomp with maybe 4 slots, fewer amp models and cabs but great delays and reverbs. This isn’t getting me excited I’m afraid, but I’m sure lots of people will think it’s perfect for their needs.

I wouldn't be surprised if future updates leverage the DSP in this by adding two-effect blocks. Which would be nice if it were rolled into HX Stomp updates. @JamesJLaRue

From a psychology and marketing standpoint, these might sell better if they limited it to only reverbs, with a metallic gray paintjob for example (same price), and then maybe a gold one that's only the drives, green one only delays and so on. Seems counterintuitive, but the way it would be perceived is more like a premium reverb (with trails, midi, many different reverbs, presets), premium modulation etc. And there'd be no complaint about "only 1 effect at a time." I've seen other brands release identical hardware with different paintjobs and software loaded inside. If you wanted to use this sometimes as a drive and sometimes as a delay, most likely you'd then also need some kind of pedal order switcher to put it in the correct spot in the chain. While this can be viewed as a versatile pedal for any one spot in the chain, it's not as likely that a guitarist (without an FX order switcher) will be able to use both the drives and reverbs in any one rig. But if they made them for each effect type, in fun colors pedalboard enthusiasts enjoy, the perception would be different. I see this with BOSS, where people have OD-200, MD-200, IR-200 and DD-200 and Im just like "that's an expensive way to buy a GT-1000CORE". But also I'm old enough to remember Voltron/GoLion, and forming something big out of smaller, colorful pieces has a certain charm to it.

So having something that can cover that second handful means a smaller pedalboard. The HX Stomp is overkill for this, and the Zoom Multistomp doesn’t inspire confidence. And an H9 is more expensive.

I think it's a great idea. I have a headrush so I'm not exactly modeler-phobic. I also have a pedalboard and know the pain of trying to fit everything you want on. If I want a tremolo for one song only, a phaser for another and a space echo for another I have just saved 2 slots on my board by having this (and probably money too). I generally enjoy having limited options, if I'm honest. Making patches on modelers for me generally results in option paralysis and getting frustrated. I can choose from 7 different fuzzes on a modeler or buy one fuzz and squeeze what I can out of it. This isn't silly. People made unbelievable records with limited equipment as the norm until recently.

I might be the target for this pedal, as a tubeamp user, but!!! First question, is it analog dry through? If not I cant see how this will compete with merris and uafx as you talk about. 2 does it have some new usefull presets, that would be nice. I don't think I understand why people are not getting this pedal. Sure, if you already own a Helix... this is probably not for you. But if you have an amp and some pedals that are the core of your tone... but you need one specific effect for this one song, and a totally different effect for another song, this is your wild card pedal. It's a pitch shifter one minute, then it's a guitar synth, then it's a megaphone effect. Or maybe it's a different drive pedal for each song?! The possibilities are practically endless!

Like a lot of L6 products this is almost a product I want. If it could run like 4 blocks and had an analog dry path I wouldn’t hesitate to prioritize this as my next pedal buy. As it is it seems pretty limited in capabilities. It is basically a more expensive and updated m5. Now the m5 was pretty great at the time and I think a used one is a great buy for someone getting into pedals.. the price point of this I think makes it too steep to recommend for that role.

I think the pedal is fucking awesome, i got it today. It has a ton of different effects, and to me the ones i use most (delay, chorus, reverb, flange, OD, distortion, fuzz, etc) they all sound great to me. Of course you’re gonna have some in there that you’ll never use and sound weird, but for the price, the look, the size, the incredible tweak ability of settings, it’s an absolute steal for the price. If you bought all the one trick pony pedals this thing offers (that literally often sound no better and sometimes even worse than this), you’d be paying thousands.

I could NOT figure out any use for this thing when I saw it. Extremely confused at who this was aimed at and who would actually buy it. I just don't get where you would put this in your chain. It should at minimum run 2 effects at once. Is anyone going to replace their delay or reverb with it? If it does, it has a specific place in the chain for you, which makes the other effects kind of useless.

This product made sense to me when I heard it takes regular power supplies. ... Line 6 thinks this is for stomp box guys as a gateway to modeling and multi-effects. Maybe that's true, I don't know. ... I think in the long run This will be for modeling and multi-effects guys who branch out into piecemeal boards as a Swiss army knife when you need something in a pinch that you already know you can get in Helix Land. Like, "oh no I really wanted this fancy reverb for this sound but I don't own that pedal, But I know I can get that sound in the Helix so where's that stupid HX1 thing laying around?"
@johnnytwo-shoes9798
@johnnytwo-shoes9798 9 месяцев назад
I got the impression this was like the HX FX so no amp modelling. This might detract from the intention of the product to reel in some knob twisting pedal purists (Strymon meris SA style) (also I love my individual FX pedals for the quick knob twist so it wasn't meant as an insult) but to have it do 1 amp/can model or amp only for when you have a Poweramp as well might add to its flexibility and then people can twist knobs on FX pedals, so it ould be an iridium Friedman competitor or the 1 FX competitor. But for more than half the price in AU ($649) of an HX stomp ($900-$1100) when a great poly pitch FX like ehx pitch fork in a nano format is less than $300. If it was more towards $400 for the flexibility and had the option for amp modelling (it would then gain the criticism for not having dual amp or something so I can understand why it's not there) I think it would be more compelling. But i have the small stomp and a helix so less interested esp for the price. I'd recommend the hx stomp over it everytime even as a 2 fx unit (twice the size) to compete with the Strymon meris SA UA style pedals. IMHO

I don't see the value. For $299, you can get a Source Audio Collider that does Reverb and Delay. This only does 1 effect at at time. It should have support 2 effects (call it Helix Duo). As a Helix LT user, this doesn't add enough for the price. I have use cases where I wish I had another block, esp on my A path (I have 2 amps on there). If I were going to expand my LT, I would use HX Stomp that gives me an additional 8 blocks.

I think that marketing wise, it is an attractive pedal to someone who has not yet dived into the world of multi effects and has resisted it. However as someone who has used multi effects, it still just isn’t something I’d recommend to them for the price. I think there are a lot of better alternatives for the money, depending on your needs. And if you want it as a variable pedal to take on different needs and fill-in-the-blank on your board, I’d still say the HX stomp is 10 times more valuable for for 2 times the price, the Zoom Multistomp which is more valuable in many ways for only half the price, or the Line6 M5 which has most of the same effects and features for half the price. Honestly I do hope it leads to people selling their M5s really cheap because I’d totally snag one of those. Lol
@TheDilligan
@TheDilligan 9 месяцев назад
I will add, one thing this unit has going for it is that it will probably included in Line6 updates with new effects while the M5 just has what it has and that’s it. Although I hope this doesn’t mean they are discontinuing the M5 because that’s such a cool pedal at a great price.

I’m gonna be honest here, I would way rather have $130 zoom MS50G, which can do multiple effects at once, rather than this HX one… I love my Zoom and use it live professionally all on its own, several times a month. My pedal board is all Strymon midnight series (with the stryfecta), and I have had people ask me what is on my board when I was only using the Zoom. This has the flaw of the Eventide H9… very useful, great effects, but only one at a time, making it just a subpar version of many stand alone pedals.

As an HX Stomp user, I'm probably not the target user. But, if I was relatively new to guitar, and someone told me I could get about 250 cool Effects in a single Pedal at about $1 per Effect, I'd wonder what looney bin they escaped from. When two of three, single-effect Pedals cost more than 250 useful Effects in one Pedal, which person is the crazy consumer? The more I think about it, this may have been a very smart move by Line 6.

I use the HX Stomp. I don't need the HX One. But its obvious that they are not aiming for me. For a traditional pedalboard player who doesn't use a ton of fx, something like the HX One would be very cool. BUT I think it is too expensive. I'd rather pickup an M5. Yes, I would be missing the latest additional fx that have been added post the M series, but it would still provide the sort of functionality of the HX One at half the price. If the HX One was $150, I might actually buy one. It would provide a way to use the polyphonic fx and still have enough DSP to build a full signal chain.

There are tons of things out there that "no one asked for", but once people found a use for them, they fell in love with the product or they can't live without it or at very least find great value in it. The Line6 M5 was really popular, so clearly there is a market out there for single use multi effects pedals. All they did was take that concept and updated it with their new technology.
