For me, Minmay's part in ending the Zentradi threat through culture wasn't that important. For me, she was the glue that pulled all the refugees aboard the ship together into a family. That bond between them all, despite their hardships, was what attached me to the story, and it is something that none of the sequels have been able to duplicate.

Give Macross Plus a chance if you haven't already. The music is amazing, and the visuals and flight scenes are exciting and stunning. It doesn't have all the same elements you would get from Macross or Robotech, because it's not about war and prejudice, and overcoming the trials of those things, but it does have a love triangle soup opera drama, and as mentioned earlier, amazing music and art. It's one of the pinnacles of 90's animation.

I just love the way Maceoss + did some world building early on. Like, I barely remmember details so I gotta watch it again but I rmemeber a really cool space battleship. That followed by the scene where the pilot is I'm the colonels office (whatever, his boss) being reassigned to "New Edward's" AFB; the transparent views creepy floor looked cool AF, and I was given an impression that the emigration to new star systems was underway. May have misinterpret a bit but all the more reason to enjoy it again!

The original Macross, for all the occasionally goofy animation, can overcome those flaws due to the story. I watched it with my boyfriend and his roommate in the room and didn't feel weird about it for a minute (though they did get a laugh out of the Giant Tuna in Space scene). I think I get where you're coming from about the reactions of the characters - they generally act and react the way real people do. It makes the show feel really grounded in a way that doesn't gel with exaggerated SD characters or extreme fanservice. Even though I have some issues with DYRL changing some themes of the original Macross, even the more fantastical animation elements in it never felt too out-there because the character's reactions still seemed genuine.
@jh4599
@jh4599 5 лет назад
DYRL gets a pass for that because it's literally a fictionalized historical drama that exists in the Macross universe. Folk in other Macross series have mentioned how they've watched it.

I’m pretty much in the same camp as you, but I think that it’s not just a macros problem. It’s just an industry-wide trend. SDF Macross, like many early 1980s anime, came around at a time before the clichéd anime tropes were so pervasive. Real Robot mecha anime around that time was pretty no-nonsense in general (Votoms, Patlabor, etc.). In fact, Macross was almost sillier than most of them with its pop music and such. But today anime is just full of annoying genre tropes, and this has been true for decades now. So, Madrid’s was never really different. It’s just one of many casualties.

The original Macross series did suffer a lot of trouble in the beginning of airing, it was telling a serious story to kids whose seeking robots battle. That happened to gundam too. Nowadays, Japan’s creators had made different formulas and elements in the anime for each type of anime watchers, those ones u are blaming are the common preference in Japan. Try watch Macross plus n M. Zero, those had really good reputation but lack in selling billboards . The sad truth is even the makers can make masterpieces, there may not be people who are able to appreciate them.
@PrimusProductions

The original series embodies most of the cliches you mention. It feels different because was among the originators. Minmay was the *first* idol to appear in anime. In fact the most critically acclaimed work in the series (except for DYRL) is also the *least* like the original series. It sort of de-constructs two of the three pillars of Macross that people like you criticize; love triangles and the music industry (no spoilers) and the way it exemplifies the third pillar, mecha, is perhaps the greatest in the franchise in my opinion. I am speaking about Macross Plus, of which I saw no clips of in this video. Where you purposely avoiding it or are you honestly unaware of it?
@QuintonReviews
@QuintonReviews 7 лет назад
Macross Plus is the outliner that I never really see posted about. It looks a lot more artsy than the other ones, but I would be lying if I said that it interested me any more. I also watched all of Zero, but that again I felt like was missing the point on a lot of it. The vague ending pissed me off. The show representing some of these cliches is irrelevant -- these cliches might have been born from the show, but in that aspect at least there's some sense of a natural immersion as you watch it. It's not as niche in its presentation.

I would say quinton is on the money. As he said, SDF macross shaped the industry, and the sequels were shaped by it. Macross was about love and culture being the answer to an enemy that knew nothing of those things other than war, all delivered through a pop idol, but since j-pop idols became such a big hit, the sequels revolved their plots around both the music/idol aspect, and whatever is the fad in anime at the time. The sequels may show the staples of the series on the surface... love triangles, music, an enemy defeated by music, transforming robot planes, but they near entirely fail to go deeper than that.

@@leefranklin3054 Delta's issue was its rush of story development, not knowing which character to focus on, and its gigantic con deluded mess of "am I a mecha, or idol anime?" Frontier works a lot better because it kept a decent amount of characters to focus on, and stayed on a linear path on what kind of story it wanted to create. Not to mention, the love triangle is just kept simple between two idols, and a fighter pilot. Also Frontier recognizes that despite coming out during the gigantic boom of anime idols like Idolm@ster, it still wanted to stay true and focus to the Macross formula, by finding that right balance between the pillars of mecha, romance, and idol.

Yeah, my dad introduced me to robotech about ten years ago when I was 8 and that was when I didn't know it was "Anime" and instead just a normal American show he watched when he was younger too. So when I did get into anime later and found out that Robotech is an americanized Macross and I told my Dad he got really excited and told me he wanted to watch all the sequels I told him about. To protect his love for the series I never did because I knew my dad would never get into how "anime" the other sequels are. I totally get it; the Macross sequels are shaped by modern anime while the original one went against it. I have arguments in the past with Macross fans why the basic formula for a Macross show hasn't been changed (Love triangle, idol singing, & culture). The answer is it's marketed to girls..

I think a big thing for me is that I never felt like I needed to see the 'idol' aspect blend into the combat. I used to wake up at 4am before grade school to watch this on the Sci-Fi channel just to watch the full airing of robotech all 3 arcs. But the fact that the relationships were grounded in reality, the show dealt with war genocide, racism, marriage, sex, and other adult topics... I mean after you see a cartoon treat the view that's a kid as a young adult holyshit! Why would I ever go back to US cartoons I thought back then. Few years later im the only high school student on a CBR F4 racing 120mph 3 citys away after School in DFW to a anime shop to rent VHS Videos of EVA and other 80's and new 90's anime Great time to be a fan. I totally agree with your take on Minmei. She was one important component of culture that the Zentraedi were so affected by, but she was part of a team effort to defeat them in the climax episode. In the sequels, the "song attack" and the idol thing became WAY too big of a story point... Macross Plus being the only one to incorporate it in an organic way. As far as the Pachinko animation goes, the mecha animation is great, but the character design and drawing style is just very generic anime. It doesn't come close to the beauty of Mikimoto's unique character design and excellent art direction in all of the episodes he directed. Nor Hirano's in all of the episodes he directed. I'd much rather see a touch-up of the original series reusing existing artwork from the great episodes to replace the awful artwork in the handful of badly animated episodes that were farmed out to the Filipino studio back in the day due to budget constraints.

Let's see, I've watched Macross, Macross Plus, Macross 7 and it's spin offs and Macross II. I've also watched all of Robotech, I will never watch the Masters Saga again, it was painful. I'm honestly not a huge fan of Macross 7, I think Macross Plus either movie or TV show is amazing. I've also seen Do You Remember Love and enjoyed that, though from what I understand, it's hard to find in the states, maybe that's changed. I would say one of the other things that changes over the course of the Macross shows, is how they handle the military. In Macross, the crew of the Macross are good decent people, who try to do the right thing. The troops on the ground are portrayed as admirable. It's the higher up command of UN Spacey that's kind of awful and ruins the Earth. It's this sort of nuanced view of the military, it's not good, but it's not totally bad. In Macross 7, the military is just straight on bad. Our heroes are a rogue group that aren't part of the Macross 7's crew but rather civilians that see a different solution to the fighting than more fighting. There's no nuanced view of the military in Macross 7, it's very black and white. That continues on throughout the follow up series, as the main characters are never really part of the military, at least from what I've heard. The main character in Frontier is part of a mercenary group that's hired by the military, but isn't exactly part of it. The only series were we return to having heroes that are in the military are Macross Plus and Macross Zero. I don't know how Macross Zero is, as I haven't watched it, I like to think it's good because Roy is the best, but I don't really know. Macross Plus is excellent though, it doesn't shy away from showing the military in both a positive and negative light. In the original Macross, not all Zentradi are evil, not all members of the Earth military are good. It's complicated and nuanced. That's something that I think the series since then have lacked. It's clear cut that the military is bad. The evil aliens are also bad but peace can be achieved, though in Macross 7, I don't recall members of the alien race actively seeking out peace like in the original Macross, so much as it being forced on them by the rogue civilian musicians from the colony ship Macross 7. I may be remembering things wrong, not sure. So, I think maybe there's something there about why you don't find later series that interesting, they lose some of that nuance that the original had, from what I've observed.

One thing I feel that makes Macross better than Robotech, is how the Zentraedi are portrayed. In Macross, the Zentraedi are the embodiment of fascism. Like, they bascially have the elements of a fascistic society: they treat war as a way of life; they have a clearly defined enemy (the Supervision Army), of whom is pretty much a phantom and confuse other civilizations with their primal foe, (especially as this is akin to the Nazis who assume that all Jews are communists and anyone who supports communism is Jewish); the leadership of the Zentraedi distort their history via a past that never existed, much like Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany; their assimilation into the liberal capitalist society of the UN government is reminisicient of the Japanese being assimilated into the American liberal capitalist culture that was spreading; and lastly, they have a preference for martydom like their real world and historical counterparts. But in the case of Robotech, the Zentraedi's menace is rather diminished, because when you have the creators active, it takes away from what they represent as stated above. For one, by making them slave soldiers who are sent to retrieve a lost spaceship that belonged to their creators, it just makes them a bit lame in this sense. Plus, the fact that it was established that they don't repair their own equipment or vehichles, and the line where Exadore says that they do repair and modify their equipment and vehicles is a major plot hole in Robotech.

I think part of the issue is "the culture" in newer shows just isn't very good. The music is very poppish and shallow. Its all for the audience, rather than for humanity and it makes the things the show is trying to do ring hollow because I just do not care that much about idol culture. A story like Bocchi the Rock set in Macross I think would be incredible, simply because its told from the perspective of the musician approaching the pilot, rather than the pilot approaching the musician. You could have a "rock and a hard place" mindset vs "culture and compassion" mindset, and from thesis and antithesis derive a synthesis of what Macross wholistically is where both characters grow into more complete human beings by learning from eachother's differences. Its the obvious thing to do with the story and its just not being done.

And I try not to be a snob, but when the creators of the show want to stop the love triangles and are forced to keep it by the studio, you know the franchise is running tired. Plus the absolute plot cul-de-sac that was Lady M, and her freaking deal. I heard the movie was "supposed" to explain her, but couldn't even do that, since it got changed in development.

I've even watched Macross with my fucking _mum_, while showing her any other anime would probably make her think I'm a complete weirdo. There's just so many times in most "traditional" anime where the girls do something that's, I don't know, creepy? If that makes sense? When they don't act like normal people and start doing some "cute" thing it makes me see the type of people who want to see shit like that rather than the characters themselves. You're actually what got me interested in Macross in the first place too, so thanks for that.

This ain't it, chief. Frontier and Delta could be rightly accused of tossing one right over the plate. But Plus and 7, at least, carve out their own unique tonal spaces that are worth exploring Plus manages to rep both Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto, of Cowboy Bebop fame, in its top-flight credits. That alone should serve as an indication of its pedigree. But going beyond that, it's sophisticated and nuanced in a way that most prestige anime OVAs and movies in the 90s could never hope to achieve. Meanwhile, 7 leaned-into its own delightfully unique gonzo tone. To call it a banal anime would be doing it a drastic disservice, since the entire series lives or dies by its one-two punch of off-kilter character work, and the heightened rock-opera "LISTEN TO MY SONG!" energy.

Here, we, go. I respect your opinion. I really do. We can both enjoy SDF Macross in different ways, and honestly what you said about Minmay is pretty spot on. If you enjoyed Robotech, SDF Macross and Genesis Climber MOSPAEDA were the least changed from their original state, and SDC Southern Cross was just bad so don't watch it. Now, In terms of macross sequels, Macross Plus is a little more gritty and realistic (in most ways), and Do You Remember Love? Is also pretty good. The Ear thing bothers me a bit (since it wasn't in the original SDFM animation) but I don't mind it so much when it's toned down to Spock levels of pointiness, it's the Lodoss War elf ears that sort of bug me when we get into later sequels. It might be for the best that you don't have any interest in Macross Sequels, since it's kind of a rabbit hole. Some of the Stuff From Macross Zero doesn't make sense until you watch Macross 7, and then Some scenes from Macross Frontier don't make sense without the Macross Zero Framework. Then Macross Delta has callbacks to all the earlier productions that might leave you a bit lost. DYRL and Plus are probably your best bets for stand alone content. I'd say give them a shot, they might surprise you.

Semi relevant spiel/my thoughts on the franchise - Do You Remember Love would probably be my favourite if not for the frontier (series + movies). I recognise the flaws in each, and a lot of people say delta pales in comparison to the rest of the franchise, which I kinda agree with, but there is so much worse out there. Regardless of love triangle shenanigans or idol/pilot hijinks, what keeps me with this series, what i consider its lifeblood, is its music. It's intrinsically linked with the story, the characters, and the core themes of the franchise. From 80's idol pop to 90's rock, 2000's jpop to 2010's idol group boom, it changes as time passes, but it's purpose stays the same. To illustrate that while valkyries and destroids can fight the good fight, music is what resonates with people, both in a literal and a meta-contextual sense. That cultural exchange still happens to a degree, and i get how suspension of disbelief/marketability/modern anime tropey plays a part, but I can still see the Macross that Kawamori has created over these years. I might be biased since i started with frontier, loved it, and then worked my way back, but this was my takeaway from it. (an aside: while frontier was shaped by it's contemporaries at the time, i'd argue it's impact in terms of music was much higher, with the OST charting at heights not seen for anime music since NGE, with the songs from the series being mainstays with karaoke and vtuber covers to this day. This COULD be attributed to Yoko Kanno's composition alone, but the vocals of May'n and Megumi Nakajima really provide that kick. I guess for a lot of people, myself included, that perfect storm held something that wasn't there prior, and the smorgasbord of idol related anime/multimedia franchises that sprung up since then, as well as the amount of mainstream japanese artists that have become famous due to and/or record op/eds for anime increased following the advent of this franchise shows how it made waves in the industry. in hindsight this seems like frontier shilling/bragging but it was a really interesting thing to see looking back on it.) (super duper irrelevant cool fact: Hideaki Anno's first work as an animator was assisting for Super DImension Fortress Macross!)

damn i really was incensed enough to bat this hard for the sequels lmao i'd say at least we're in a better place now with distribution of some of the Macross movies even hitting cinemas in the states, and a shmup on the way, and who knows how that sunrise-produced new series will turn out? Somehow, they have gotten more mileage in the west in recent years compared to og Macross/Robotech, partly due to the Harmony Gold situation still limiting content that has "overlap" with Robotech, which, despite the negotiations with Big West, still plagues Macross (and to some extent, Robotech) fans to this day. At this point, rather than arguing about originality or superiority I just hope that the eventually people can access Macross in its entirety without needing to jump through hoops or have to import Japanese blu-rays with English subs, since I think as a cumulative body of work it deserves more people to at least check it out and see how a lot of stuff in both Macross and its subsequent sequels have continued to influence anime and manga to this day.

I just watched the original SDF Macross for the first time. I came into this series from a very different angel than most people. For starters Shoji Kawamori the creator of Macross designed optimums prime. Jetfire is the Valkyrie. I'm a big Gundam fan and i wanted to expand into other real robot anime. One of my all time favorite video games Xenogears refences the Macross with the Super dimensional gear Yggdrasil IV. And finally the Lego theme Exo-force had designs by Shoji Kawamori for promotional use. How you described Minmei is exactly how viewed it. She brought culture to a species that lacked any. seeing all this idol stuff makes me not care. I feel the issue is Macross is an 80's genre defining anime. It feels more inline with anime like Gundam and votoms. I expect the sequels to be like the original. They might be but I'm also sacred of getting into them and seeing waifu wars. Looks like im sticking with the classics.

If they were to do a reboot that is to the Original Series what "Yamato 2199" was to its Original, I think we'd be fine. Anyway, out of all the Sequels, I recommend "Macross Plus". And I dont like most, the exception being Macross 2(yes I liked it), and I find the way Robotech combined 3 different anime intonation saga, vs One anime saga the lost me. Quinton - this ALREADY was Retconned just as Macross TV series was wrapping up , MOST people forget the MACROSS the Movie 1984 , and most Americans have never seen it on a 70mm Dolby screen. Macross DYRL (do you remember love) is a Retelling of the Journey of the SDF-1 back to Earth. its, Incredible Deep Cell Shaded hand drawn Animation with a lot of Frames compared to the Macross TV series. and was the one of the FIRST to feature Advanced CGI in a few scenes as well. In addition to the NEW Animation , there was the MUSIC , some of which was from the TV series and SOME all new. Mari Iijima still did the Vocals. it also included a Gratutius NUDE shower scene of Minmay in ZERO Gravity. oh, and there is more REAL Air + Space Physics involved in this Movie. and this Movie goes all out in Intense battles in Air + Land and Space. I suggest watching Macross DYRL on DVD if you have a Chance, its a GEM , and the STANDAD that I judge Modern Animation on.

Quinton Review sorry to hear your not interest in the rest of the Macross franchise... that's a real shame... guess not having watched those anime you mention during scenes from Macross Delta really helped me out there. I've just finished watching all the seasons of Macross, from Macross to Macross delta and I loved them (Well with the exception of Classic/First Macross that one I almost hate)... I haven't watched the Frontier or Delta Movies mainly because I like how both seasons ended and didn't like what I heard about the Frontier movies alternate ending and missing elements... I'm currently in the middle of the movie 'Macross: do you remember love' but I have bad habit of getting distracted than stopping and restarting it. Plus Quinton Review I so get where your coming from about 80's dubs... I found and tried to watch this english dub of 'Macross: do you remember love' but it was so 80's I barely got ten to fifteen minutes into before I switched to the Japanese dub. I'd say my ranking for Macross Franchise is; 1: Macross Frontier 2: Macross 7 (That one surprised me, because male lead Basara is so one dimensional) 3: Macross Delta 4: Macross Plus 5: Macross do you remember love (subbed version only) 6: Macross Lovers Again (I know it an alternate universe to main series like how Tenchi Universe is an alternate to Tenchi Muyo but I like it... part 1 was way better... part 2 was rushed and lost direct) 7: Macross (Sorry I'm a child of 90's and early 2000's and this series was just too 80's for me. It didn't help the ADV Film butchered the dubbing in quite a few areas if you ask me. So I board-line hate the first series).

Really late comment here. I love OG Macross for various reasons. I love the cast. I love the Zentradi. I love the general themes. But on top of all that, there's nostalgia, too. Notice I didn't mention the world of Macross, but there are aspects of it I do enjoy. Long story short, there are simply too many reasons why I will not enjoy a Macross sequel like I did the original. Macross Plus is the big exception, but I feel like a big reason I liked it was that it was kind of "safe" in the storytelling. Compare that to Macross 7 that recontextualized Minmay's singing to have anima spiritia, something that turned me off like Midi-chlorians in Star Wars. And as outlandish as the Zentradi were, they appealed to me because they were grounded in humanity just enough, unlike Macross Zero (which I never finished) or the Vajra in Frontier (I liked Frontier, but not to the point I rewatch it like the original). Even DYRL can't compare to the original series for me.

I agree with you on Minmay. I tap out every time they use "Magical Singing Girls" in the sequels, or use music as a literal weapon instead of the culture shock it was for the aliens who had never experienced such things. I want my original military epic, with impressive combat and fascinating science fiction ideas. Not magical solutions, or instant pacifist brainwashing music. Macross DYRL is the only one I liked so far. Macross Plus I have a Love/Hate relationship with. The Robotech comic with Roy and Claudia in their early stage of their relationship has a pretty fun story, with a tear jerker ending where Rick takes Skull One for one last ride.

Macross doesn't follow any anime trend? Last time I checked, the deaths of Roy Fokker and Hayao Kikazaki were inspired by the anime of killing off a character in the moment of their development. We saw this happen with Garma Zabi in the original Mobile Suit Gundam to name one example.
@CosmoShidan
@CosmoShidan 5 лет назад
Plus, I would argue that Macross also followed the trend of an iconic battleship against space armadas which go back to 1974's Space Battleship Yamato, and later followed by Capt. Harlock, Invincible Superman Zambot 3 Space Runaway Ideon and Galaxy Express 999. Speaking of Ideon, the titular giant robot first fired missiles in a frenzy. This was 2 years before Macross and Ideon may have inspired it. So yes, Macross has borrowed ideas from other sci-fi and mecha animes.

The Original Macross Series and DYRL are far superior and sophisticated than a great majority of anime these days. It makes sense in modern Macross to have the idol girls or band, like Fire Bomber, because of how legendary Minmay became in the Macross universe, but that does not mean that all the Macross series are good. Some are better than others, thats for sure.

While in due time I will go back and finish the original Macross, it's easy to understand as to why you aren't into the later series or the new animated scenes. Littering a series with fanservice constantly is a big problem anime, manga, and visual novel creators believe will always work while putting them into non-sexual series in the first place. There's also the fact that everytime I hear about Macross Delta it's a complaint and that idol anime girls rarely appeal to me since their cute appeal comes off as overdone along with having boring music.

And as for look of the idols in Frontier and Delta . Original Macross had holo projectors. Later series build on that and what we see in anime is what people see in those worlds as well. A bombastic show with all bells and whistles possible. Hell, Walküre transformation in Delta are just holographic overlay masking a very utilitarian flight suit beneath. Magic stones? They actually do have in world explaination and we defined properties. And so on and so forth. Honestly, Kawamori likes his idols but he also is an engineer and do put a lots of realizm into his works. I do however agree that presentation itself has become modernized and does not really fit original at times. That's kinda the point, as original was post apocalyptic survival war drama and later installments are set during rebuild and expanse period. In contrast, Zero is a prequel and is even more gloom and doom, simply because background situation of the world is, honestly, shitty.

I started noticing things like scenes I'd never seen before and really wonderful songs by Mari Iijima. I tried to watch the next series, but as soon as the original cast disappeared and everyone started riding motorcycles in the desert, I was out. Maybe I've missed something I might enjoy, but it just isn't the same. Seriously, they could have really expanded the story line out with the original cast and been so much better off. Macross II felt close in themes. The later ones though... they might be enertaining at times but they aren't the space operas that Macross and Robotech are. They are just modern anime shows. Instead of trying to recapture the realistic atmosphere and themes of the original to continue the saga, they just take some elements and throw them into the mixer with moder anime topoi and graphic design. Even Robotech did better at preserving the main themes of the saga. It feels more like Macross than many of the sequels.

Oh, one more thing... elf ears... yeah. Not a fan.
