Monster Docs: Episode Two
Many people consider the Major League of Monster Trucks to be the best monster truck tour of all time. Despite its massive popularity, the series only lasted for one season. The MLMT was poised to compete with Monster Jam, NASCAR, and other forms of professional motorsport racing, but was never truly able to give their competition a run for their money. This is the story of how the MLMT rose and fell in under a year.

This is an awesome documentary. MLMT was ahead of its time. The racing and freestyle felt different than the traditional courses, which made it awesome to watch. As you said, I don't know if we'll ever see this type of series again, but the tracks could definitely be used today. I could see a promotion like Monster Truck Wars or Hot Wheels use these types of tracks if and when they host outdoor shows. Great Job!

Fantastic video. It is so sad to not see a racing series like this tour these days. Monster Jam people have talked about putting more emphasis on the racing competition bc it goes so fast which is a nice thing to see nowadays. This league had so much potential but with how 2008 was economically it was just at the wrong time. It ALWAYS seems like people can’t agree on stuff or HAVE to have drama in the monster truck industry and we see split ups like that happen. Fantastic work and u have my permission to use my footage in any of ur videos if u need 😊

This was so well done. I found myself enjoying the nostalgia, slightly getting my hopes up that this could re-emerge, then becoming saddened by the inevitable realization that I am in the minority as a racing fan & this will likely never happen again. So I'll reference the quote, "Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened." At least we got one full year of it. I still wonder though, if a series similar to this is likely fail, is there a still a possibility of a single event with open qualifying and a huge purse? That could something to see!

I was really hoping that this series was really gonna take off. Great racing and awesome tracks! If a Monster Jam event and this series events were on your same weekend, I'd be attending MLM! I don't just go to monsters Jam events on my own will. Usually my daughters would surprise me not know that I could care less about attending. The MLMT is up there with my favorites like TNT, Penda and ProMT.

Monster Jam is pretty much the WWE of motorsports in that it's mainly all just a show rather than legit head-to-head competition which has been the basis of most motorsports. I really do hope Monster Jam fails soon or changes hands to an owner that will give more focus on real racing and give back most of the trucks to their respective creators such as Grave Digger which wsa created by Dennis Anderson only to be bought out by Feld Entertainment the owner of Monster Jam just so it can run in its events. In fact, I'd say around 70% to 80% or maybe even more of the trucks that are featured in Monster Jam events are owned by the promotion.
@jonathin9369
@jonathin9369 6 месяцев назад
As of 2024 the current tours feature an even 50/50 split of half independent, half company owned trucks. Some of the independent teams have deals with MJ to run feld identities (ie team scream with megalodon) but they are still independently owned and operated. As for Grave Digger, Dennis sold the name back in the 90s. It is still easily the most famous truck in the entire world and as long as feld has it, monster jam will be fine. You couldn’t pry the rights to gd from felds cold dead hands if you wanted to.
@furioussherman7265
@furioussherman7265 5 месяцев назад
Dennis sold Grave Digger to FELD in 1999 because he couldn't afford to keep the team going. If the source of funding for iconic trucks like it suddenly dried up, I guarantee you'd never see them run at any show again.
@thenickhelms84
@thenickhelms84 5 месяцев назад
@@furioussherman7265 Yeah, because Monster Jam took over and held dominion in everything that had to do with monster trucks! Monster Jam was the only promoter that had the capitol to keep Grave Digger going so FELD sent Anderson an ultimatum, "hand over the Grave Digger trademark, licensing and i.p. or start looking for another promoter!
@furioussherman7265
@furioussherman7265 5 месяцев назад
@@thenickhelms84 Not even close. By the end of the '90s, every monster truck event wanted Grave Digger at it, so Dennis had to expand the team, build new trucks, constantly, and fix the ones on hand. Between that and the signature bat-shit crazy driving style everyone wanted from the black and green wrecking machine, very few people in the industry could've afforded to keep it running. As well, Dennis was also having to deal with a lawsuit from the Grave Digger ride truck tipping over on a beach (thankfully, no one was hurt). It was either sell the team to FELD or go under for good.
@DreamstoRealityAutomotiveTV
I’ve never heard of this series, amazing video! This is exactly what I would want to see come back, real legitimate competition. Guys(and gals) who actually build and operate trucks. Monster truck events are mostly about who can tear up a truck the best, pass.

@diychad7268 Год назад
@@MonsterTruckMcKayla the only and main problem the monster trucks have with making such a popular series like super and motocross is that damn near anybody has the ability to be able to get themselves a dirt bike........ The monster trucks cost so much that that isn't even anywhere near possible, so it's hard for fans to be able to have that personal connection with the core of the series, that's where open qualifying would have a hard time succeeding and would still just end up being the same drivers at each event because who out there besides the guys already racing them have monster trucks, I mean of course some folks would end up investing into buying a truck and whatnot but not many I wouldn't think
@MonsterTruckMcKayla
@MonsterTruckMcKayla Год назад
@@diychad7268 Yeah, I get what you're saying, although I never understood the people wanting to get a stock dirt bike and thinking that it'll be the same as a full-on supercross bike with factory suspension. Even if you have the "best" bike that a previous SX champion rode to the winnner's circle, it's still very rider dependent along with all of the factory mods and upgrades. I suppose one idea is for the MTs to get back behind the idea of trying to sell pickup trucks, like with the Ford Trucks sponsorship of the early 2000s. Even though the MTs are nothing close to how the actual consumer pickup trucks would be, other than a fiberglass body meant to replicate one, the concept of running a truck body that's similar to consumer trucks is what could build a relationship with the fans. In contrast, look at the personal connection that fans have with NASCAR drivers and NHRA drivers, despite those cars being nothing like a consumer car that you can go buy at a local dealership. Which, leads to the super unpopular opinion that a lot of MT fans probably had in the back of their mind, but don't want to accept (myself included): the truck names would have to be abolished completely. Gasp! I know, it sounds like blasphemy, but if you look at any other "serious" racing series, the connection to the fans revolves around the driver and potentially the team/sponsor/manufacturer...NASCAR, NHRA, Supercross/Motocross, Nitro Rallycross, Indy Cars, F1, etc. and not a specific vehicle name with many different drivers that could be driving under that banner. Now, that's not to say that all MT names would have to be discarded...just whatever trucks were to run in a serious racing only series comparable to the other motorsports I just mentioned. There could still be shows with skills and freestyle, and those could be thought of as the FMX world of MTs, whereas the MT events heavily centered on racing could have the absence of truck names with vehicle numbers and sponsors in their place and most emphasis placed on the driver. It might not sound that awesome, and a lot of the personality of the trucks would be lost, but it might be the way to go to kickstart a serious racing series. Everything that has tried to do things the traditional way of retaining the truck names while trying to integrate that with a concept of serious racing has folded, so maybe that's the step in the right direction? And I get what you're saying with the open qualifying...it wouldn't be cheap and maybe the purse payouts would have to increase quite a bit in order for more teams to feel compelled to compete. This would mean marketing heavily to the fans of the other motorsports and hopefully convince them that MTs are serious racing machines in order to bring in that additional revenue. It would definitely take several years, maybe decades realistically in order to rewire the way the general public perceives MTs as just a form of entertainment. But, if a NASCAR sized crowd could be in attendance one day to see an MT race, imagine the revenue in ticket/merchandise sales compared to how they are now. So much of extra profits could be reinvested in a series to make things bigger and better, and pay teams wages that would offset the cost of parts, traveling, etc. If a great many number of trucks show up, I suppose there could be a consolation bracket for some points and money so that way teams that don't qualify well can still stay competitive and traveling to the event wasn't a lost cause financially. Think of it as a "B-Main" bracket as opposed to the top qualifiers that would be in the "A-Main." All in all, it would take a lot of funding, a lot of work, and whole lot of luck to pull something like that off, and there's still no guarantee that it would work, but we can always hope!

I live in an area that doesn’t have an arena, but does have a civic center. What we also have is a big fair grounds and plenty of bigger dirt tracks. They finally held a monster truck event at one of our local dirt tracks and it blew the monster truck event at the civic center away. Much more room to get up to speed and a better freestyle event. This was a fantastic idea but done at a bad time. It's a shame it didn't work out because I feel like it really highlighted the skill of the drivers and the engineering of the trucks. It would be nice to have a legitimate MT series like this again, but I'm also not sure there's really an audience for it. I feel like the more gimmicky entertainment-focused model is more effective at drawing the kids in and might make it seem worthwhile to the parents to see for a 2-3 hour affair. MTs did begin more as entertainment as well. Like, I feel like MT shows are something most people just go to for a few hours of fun and go home, much like a concert or play. They probably won't follow the sport of MTs as a whole after that show. I also don't think we'll see anything like this again unless a majority of the indie teams came together to make it work. It's very difficult to go up against the marketing giant of Feld (or even Mattel with HWMTL) when there are so many hands in the cookie jar right now. As good as market competition can be, I've seen plenty of times in motorsports where too much fragmentation ends up slowly killing the whole sport. But on the other hand, I feel like the average person interested in a MT show will go see it as long as it's promoted well, it's near them, and the cost makes sense, so the name/brand attached probably doesn't matter all that much. It would just be nice to have a well-promoted, well-funded, competition-focused alternative to Monster Jam for once.

Monster Jam was the worst thing to happen to Monster Trucks. There was real competition. Now it's just a traveling circus that I refuse to support. Monster Jam only promoted the brand. The drivers are homogenized with the same canned responses. They target kids, but if the dads don't like it the kids won't be there to attend. When I was a really young kid in the 80s and 90s I was in awe of the trucks like Bigfoot. I even owned Bigfoot VHS that went over their history up to the modern one, which at the time was Bigfoot 6, I believe. Edit: I cannot believe I forgot to mention how amazing you did on this documentary.

Let's face it, monster trucks were never intended to be a sport. They were always entertainment 1st. Tnt couldn't sustain it, special events couldn't sustain it as a sport either and monster jam had to switch primarily to freestyle and skills challenge and then sime boring racing to make money. The majority has voted with their pockets, entertainment it is and legitimate racing is an afterthought. The end

Interesting video. And while the smaller independent tours may not be at the scale if the MLMT, they still have their moments to shine. Like last year, Monster Truck Wars held the TNT Motorsports Unfinished Business, which is undoubtedly one of the best small shows to have ever been held.

I haven't watched MTs since they actually stopped competing on actual MT tracks. The garbage they do now is exactly the same as dancing with the stars and is less exciting. If they ever go back to actual MT racing, I'd be there.

I remember that race when raminator raced bigfoot at lowes speedway. Dad found out about a new couple of trucks coming out when i was a kid, and i being a big ram truck fanatic, still am. Raminator and ramunation. That race got me hyped up. He got tickets, me and him went all the way from Tennessee to watch. Man that was a key memory of happiness.

I was at the Nashville event when I was 7. still the best event I’ve witnessed. Such a shame bigfoot has really lost its racing roots and won’t compete in any other series.

Good video overall. I'm surprised you totally missed Joe Froome's legal issues regarding marijuana and money laundering though, as well as Schaefer's candid interview with TMB at the 2008 Nashville event where he went into detail about what all went wrong with the series.

thanks! Good points -- a lot of the behind the scenes info about the mlmt and mtc (especially regarding the investors) came from shaefer's pair of interviews with tmb. As for froome's legal issues, the weed charge had nothing to do with the mlmt and I couldnt find anything connecting the tax evasion or money laundering charges directly to the mlmt

I remember following the MLMT tour through TMB TV back in the early days. so much has changed since then. The series was indeed ahead of its time. I would argue that with the rise of the Renegade MT Tour and Outlaw monster truck drags taking the lead in competing with Monster Jam, it's only a matter of time until one of them lands a major sponsor. Also, thanks for acknowledging the impact of the 2008 recession on the MT industry. It was a major low point that was only topped by the pandemic. thing is though, if MLMT had been formed in the 2010's, I would guarantee they would still be around, and might even be bigger than Monster Jam given today's audience.

Would have needed a different backer… the guys putting up the money were crooked record industry guys and very egotistical. They fired Rich’s staff randomly and put their own people in charge. They made the same mistake twice… Unfortunately it allowed for a great idea to disintegrate under ego driven, short sighted behavior and mismanagement of funds.

I got to rewatching this for like the 3rd time and I noticed you mentioned that Dan Runte was in Bigfoot 14, but shouldn't it have been Bigfoot 16 being that 16 debuted in April of 07 and MLMT inaugural race being in Charlotte, NC in August of 07? I got to thinking about that after noticing the Firestone body Dan Runte was running a when he debuted 16 he was running that same body.
