I think, to them, the filmmakers were living in a blue pill world and it's acknowledged that the red pill represents estrogen (estrogen being only part of the transforming process, of course), bringing them / other trans people to a place where they could experience their true worlds, as their true selves. Surely, going from one state of mind to another knows no boundaries - it might not be about sexuality, sexual politics, sexual polarisation (or lack thereof), family dynamics - as indeed, is the case in the matrix. Therefore, for parts of the masculine community to take on the allegory or analogy of taking the red pill as an awakening, which (hyperbolically perhaps) goes to one's very core and deals with society is completely appropriate. There is no irony whatsoever - the film was about an awakening - the filmmakers' roots are personalised, albeit applicable to a large number of people . The red pill community of men is specific about a general awakening in what is also a large group. The majority of the manosphere who acknowledge 'red pill' in terms of society as regards gender perceptions and reinforcements aren't transphobic. All other similar generalisations about the manosphere would also seem vapid and reactionary.

The film might follow an archetype, but there are clear themes of transness that runs through the story, such as the internet being a place of escape for many trans people, and Neo demand that agent Smith calls him by his chosen name-- Neo instead of Anderson. Some people might interpret it differently because they're not trans, but the Wachowski sisters had clear intentionality when writing these things in.

So I don't think they would have left out that huge detail. It fits the Trans narrative since transformation is one of its themes, but I don't think that it was a Trans allegory from the beginning. Another way to look at it is red 💊 into the real world out of the Matrix is a metaphor for confronting the fact that you can't think yourself into something you're not.

That is the same feeling that I got. She says she wasn't sure of how present her transness was while writing it but one of the first clips tells the viewers it was her intention all along and the corporate world wasn't ready. She either realized later that it could be interpreted like that or they subconsciously wrote it in a period were she was confronting her identity.

I think the framework of Gnosticism overlays much better on the movie. Personally it looks to me as if this new i interpretation is about political and social expediency, as much as it is her trans experience. I question her motives. The motives of Netflix is very clear. Just look who the co-founder is related to

But the sisters do love them some philosophy so I am fairly confident that it likely was about both philosophy and trans experience allegory. Consider even if they wanted to make the trans themes explicit their funders would not allow it at the time. So like many movies by oppressed people about oppressed people you have to hide it well enough to have very plausible deniability. But the oppressed people who know what to look for will still have something delivered to them. I find it highly credible when the creators of this work say it has trans themes and waited to do so for a long time due to a hostile climate. Especially taking into account: they are trans themselves, there is a character named Switch who's gender switching is documented to have been vetoed by the execs, Trinity was cast with an actress who looks very similar to Neo and her hair style and dress are also evocative of being a mirror image and she first meets Neo in a club filled with people who dress and present outside the norm. It isn't just the pill color that matches estrogen pills, they could have gone with hard pills or pills of a different shape or size. What are the chances they landed on the exact size and shape of the estrogen pill and chose the color red to be the one that wakes you unintentionally? In a movie where every detail is carefully crafted. Then again just because the author has stated her intent doesn't mean you have to read it that way. I certainly don't use Orson Scott Card's intent as a guide for my interpretation of his works. I find them far more enjoyable with a different reading.

I think the entirety of the film's meaning is captured when Morpheus shows Neo the battery in his hand as a metaphor to show the "system" sees us. What many of us call the good life is a program we downloaded from Hollywood, politicians, and other cultural programming. Rockefeller designed the modern school system and is quoted to have said he wants a nation of workers, not thinkers.

@@deadkattefilmandsound937 My issue is that symbolism always can be interpreted to fit your narrative. Which is what I think has been down here in retrospect. That is what I said before: Transformation can be seen everywhere. Why this should be explicitely a transmetaphor after all this years seems kind of forced. But if trans people draw strength from the movies like mentioned in this video.. more power to them.

Like I said, we see this happen occasionally: a creator releases something with a clear message behind it, then later claims that the message was something different down the road because of their changed opinions. And while that theme of breaking free from the system may APPLY to the LGBT community, it is not exclusive to them.

There's literally whole documentaries on these movies including commentaries with the (then brothers) wachowski sisters, and not once have I heard this theory. Not that I'm against it but it does seem too on the nose with the times than the actual films.
