Why The Mr. Beast Genre Feels Stale and Boring

Mr. Beast’s influence on different kinds of content on social media is apparent, but there is mounting criticism of this type of content being soulless, sanitized, boring, and stale. Videos such as “The Mr. Beastificiation of RU-vid” and “Money killed RU-vid, Here’s how we fix it” aptly describes this sentiment. Regardless, Mr. Beast’s view count and even the view count of his alleged copycats seem to counter this argument entirely. So called “boring content” doesn't get millions of views. So today, we explore if this critique holds any grounds or if it actually comes from a community of jealous RU-vidrs unable to compete in today’s money centric, social media landscape.

I've always thought it's all pretty gimmicky stuff. Honestly I'd rather hear Mr. Beast talk about RU-vid algorithms and his inner thoughts in making the videos, then the videos themselves... Maybe he should do another channel where he shows more behind the scenes stuff (although he has said he doesn't want to do that because people will be able to copy him even more than they already are). In a recent twitter post he did say he's going to work on making videos slower paced so hopefully that works out.

Thank you for putting this out there! As a creator who makes a full-time living from RU-vid, it can be really tempting to follow the "mrbeastification" trend, which now even stretches into my own niche - travel. But I absolutely agree with you, that in doing so, something really important is lost. Personality, authenticity, connection, vulnerability, rawness, realness. And with that: emotional intelligence. If RU-vid constantly exposes us to people who are only ever loud, but otherwise stripped of personality, sensitivity or emotional intelligence, then what kind of worldview do we end up forming about other people IRL? How will that affect the way we relate to people, on-screen and IRL? I do sometimes worry about the generation that grows up on spectacle-style videos. But maybe that's just my retro side talking 😜 Thanks again, really loved this one!

It is a self-reinforcing cycle - creators follow what gets views, which causes viewers to watch what is recommended. Which leads to viewers’ values being conditioned to care about that type of content… and the cycle repeats Only creators can break it by adjusting their content, RU-vid change it by prioritising long term satisfaction, and viewers empower themselves to see through superficiality

Maybe the "authentic and vulnerable" approach can get you a small group of loyal fans while Mr Beast's spectacles can get you a huge number of casual viewers, which win out in terms of monetization. @@normalman23 hmmm I thinky you're being black and white too. Let's not pretend a larger creator who makes more generic content isn't going to grab the hearts of people relatively as much as someone who just sees their viewers as a community. Smaller creators who just talk to their audience in their videos, reply to comments a lot because they have a manageable amount of them, due to the less OVERALL eyes on them they're more likely to recognize people in their spaces. Speaking from experience, it feels really nice when you watch a RU-vidr and you comment on their videos and the youtuber references a comment you made before when responding to you, cause they RECOGNIZED you. That feels way more intimate than feeling like you get drowned out in a sea of other fans. Let's be real, here.

"It just doesn't hit the same" talking about MrBeast videos is so True. He fell into his own genre. There used to be an appeal to him and his crew doing stuff and having jokes and interacting with the audience. I used to watch a lot of his videos maybe 5 to 3 years ago. It was the sweet spot of his content. Between sensationslism and a group of guys joking around. I think his ideas are still so out there that he probably has a couple years ahead of him but becoming a corporate eventually erases the soul (vulnerability and authenticity). I'm really curious about where his content is going to go when all these ideas eventually run out.

My rule is to never click on thumbnails showing a face with a shocked, "hilarious" or fake angry expression. There are of course plenty of other obvious warning signs too, but these exaggerated off-putting facial expressions are a 100% guarantee that I won't go anywhere near that video - even if it's happens to be a channel I usually watch, or when it's a subject I'm interested in. @ThinkingFella

@@anthonyhollohan7651 how can you be authentic if you calculate everything meticulously with your only goal being becoming the biggest youtuber ever? That's the opposite of Authenticity. If you do something for any other reason than for the thing or the beauty of the thing itself then its not authentic. On the same token if you only give people money on camera for your youtube videos, then you are just doing it for the content (which makes you your "kindly donated" money back times 10X btw), your own public image, while kind of exploiting the situation of someone less fortunate for a quick feel good moment in your video. By exploiting i mean exploiting someones genuine need for money and only "gifting" them money, under the conditions they agree to be used as this emotional prop in front of millions, perfoming Jimmy's Authenticity for him. This isn't saint behaviour that's just making soulless content in peak capitalism. Don't get me started on how useless as solutions and blatan his philantropic marketing stunts like save the trees and save the sea's are. Also can you really be original if you study the market to find out what works best? Like how can you be genuinely original when you just regurgitate what already works best? Or how is it original to make *insert thing some else made* IRL or last to leave X wins X money a million times. He is passionate but his passion lies in gaming youtube and it's algorithm, i can't see anything beyond that. Sorry mate, mucho texto. i just can't with people who blindly idolize rich people. Please engage in more critical thinking if you can. Much love. Now imma give Alexandria's channel some views.

@Rusty Sanchez yessirrrrr this is the comment I'm looking for. jimmy has blatantly and outwardly talked about the fact that nothing he does is for the sake of being charitable (giving thousands of dollars to 1, 2, even 3 people does nothing for the whole of society or the crisis that is poverty and being poor); its for "clout". he has cracked a code for the sake of cracking it; to build upon his wealth and to prove that his place within the algorithm is inevitable. I've never liked his content nor his goal. all of these copycats aren't the problem- it's what they're producing.

You raise some excellent points as always, Donna. The quick-cut, in-your-face, Mr Beast style may be the populist route to go - but there will always be room for the slower-paced, more authentic and genuine presentations. And I do hope someone someday manages to produce a feature-length, movie quality video - more and more creators are getting closer, yourself & JackSepticEye recently being two I can think of offhand who have experimented at least with more cinematic techniques (Sean's short & silent movie about life during the pandemic was really quite awesome). But it will take an unheard of evolution of viewing to successfully get there on RU-vid alone. I think the best any creator can hope for (at the moment) is to have a more cinematic idea picked up by someone else (like a studio or Netflix), given a bigger budget, being able to hire all the necessary crew and actors involved - and maybe being given a Producer or Inspired By credit, and seeing if it flies that way, before it starts to be taken seriously.

Crazy thing about the loud and obnoxious behavior from people who aren't normally like that is puts a false perception on the younger demographic that is how they are supposed to act. It's one of the side effects on why "gen z" is considered annoying to older audiences and it creates some resentment. Ultimately, we lead by example and if we want to improve future generations taste in content. We need to open up and share better content.

Solid video. Relating to “authenticity and vulnerability” being the key, I think we can be more broad than that. Any content that has some meaning to it (of which authenticity and vulnerability of us humans is a part), is the key. That is what creates soul. For instance, educational videos that are interesting have soul, yet may not have authenticity and vulnerability

In order for behavior to be immoral it has to have negative effect on society. If everyone has a lot of sexual partners before marriage (which is already the case) and uses contraceptives there are no unwanted pregnancies, no spreading of diseases, no negative effect on society. We all had sex when we were 15,16 years old, let alone in college. We all had sex with several people when we were 16,17,18 years old.

This has been happening on youtube since the very beginning, a style comes, or a type of video trend comes, sometimes a specific person starts it other times it just sorta materializes, they always eventually fade and another takes its place. The million-dollar prize is correctly predicting the next video trend and making yourself synonymous with it. That's how you become those people in the first place. So there is always room for creativity on RU-vid, it just takes a risk to experiment, which so many people don't do anymore. They just copy, cause it's easier.

Another comment as I'm at the end of the video: I often wonder about the brands that give these particular creators brand deals and how much more revenue do they make. Brands/Companies often quote viewership as their reasoning to connect with a content creator or not. I would love to see the numbers bc essentially you're advertising your product to a group of people who most likely do not have their own bank account and cannot spend the money if they don't ask their parents.

This video is very excellent. Your style and production gets higher and higher every post!! Honestly, this feels like it should be picked up by PBS, VICE, or would look perfect on some big budget studio air-time. It’s just that level elevated and quality. Does that make sense? Because the way how you paced this and made the whole video crescendo around being authentic was beautiful!! And speaking of being authentic, it would be awesome to see you give more input and space to your predictions!!! This was my absolute favorite part about your recent video on twitter and Elon Musk!! You explained the story then you gave your predictions on the future of the current situation. You made this excellent and clear when you compared Casey Neistat to Mr. Beast !! I wanted to hear more about your perspectives ! Your critique!! And Your ambitious critique on what they future could look like!! I felt like the Twitter predictions you made in the past video were rational and grounded. However I feel as though you also have bigger more wild predictions that are worth while to share and the authenticity about laughing at them with us because the internet is wild and will continue to be more wild- as we move forward analyzing trends, landmarks, milestones and new changes that always keep us in a curious wonder of what Internet Impact ™️ has on the future .

You'd be hard pressed to find many of even the top creators who are capable of creating such a well-thought out, concise video essay like this one, yet it dwarfs in comparison to views of the spectacle videos. Unfortunately, once the framework is set for success, it becomes the norm, and the norm is easy and boring from an artistic standpoint. I think you really nailed the ending here; the biggest difference with Mr Beast is that he started here like every other kid with a webcam who speaks in to the void with a dream of connecting. Because of that, no matter how big he gets Jimmy still has the cred and the “one of us” vibe. He appears on a tin if smaller podcasts talking about his life and his ideas so if you want that personal side, it’s out there. He is still plugged in to the community at large. Damn. I just realized I sound like a fanboy. Look it’s not my fault, the guy is so easy to root for. Anyway, this was a great break down, Donna.
