If you don't pay your QB, he's gonna walk. If you don't have a QB it's hard to win games...ask Denver, Carolina, or Cleveland. And $55M+ is where the market is at. Green Bay needed to pay Jordan Love. I'm glad they did. 😊
Well its only a good pay if last year isn't a fluke and everything works out. If things head the wrong direction theb you've ended up in the jaguars spot
@@debbaedke3170 well im a bears fan so fingers uncrossed for me 😂 rn i could see the north splitting the 2 games between packers/lions/bears (1 win each) but i see all 3 beating the Vikings. What im hoping for is the strategy eberflus is implementing for caleb pays off
If anyone specific is to blame, I would say the Browns. Paying Watson that much gave so much incentive for QBs to negotiate and even hold out for higher contracts
I say it's the Giants. Paying Daniel Jones $40m put a hard floor on mediocre QBs. Between that and the cap rising, the minimum contract for serviceable, mid-tier QBs is at least $45m AAV. Given that, what is the minimum for someone like Love who showed Pro-Bowl /All-Pro caliber play but in a small sample size? His agent isn't even picking up the phone if that number doesn't have a 5 in front of it.
None of the players who have gotten paid more than mahomes have gone on to win a superbowl and i dont expect that to change soon. Gonna be mahomes or purdy this year
@@jakenewbury7528 yeah Mahomes is still making more than basically everyone for the next however many years . People just don’t understand salary cap hits vs. the more or less fake annual average per year on paper number. Mahomes carries the largest cap hit in the league in 2025 as of now, and this year he would’ve been at or near the top if it wasn’t for a restructure that brought his cap number down to where he’s 6th in the league for cap hit this season, but that restructure simply just makes future years higher. His cap hit is 50 million dollars more than Lawrence’s is in 2025. Lawrence’s and Loves are actually team friendly deals. Tuas however isn’t, except for only this year his number is very low.
@@Matt-yq3gq you have to understand something. Sports media knows everything, but they don’t put it in their news stories. They have to protect their quarterback narrative at all times just like they did with Brady😂
So Tom complains when other teams like the Dolphins and Jaguars overpay their QBs that have more experience, but celebrates when his team overpays a QB even more for one 9-8 season
tua has average to above average and has had multiple concussions already to the point where if he gets another one hes more than likely done, trevor has been average in his three years as a starter
@@IcyTorments But the 2 of them have had several years in the league and have given us enough of a sample size to appraise their talent. Love has only shown us that he can compete at an above average level for half of a season. We don't know if that is his standard or if it is an aberration before falling back to Earth (like Mac Jones, Carson Wentz, or Mitch Trubisky). This feels like the football equivalent of Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize after winning the 2008 election; they gave him the bag before doing enough to prove himself consistent enough to earn it.
@@moonjelly5 wasnt above average for that half it was an elite half lmao, and green bay has seen 4 years of progress through him being on the team. And since you pointed out those other players had Wentz not gotten hurt and Continued to get hurt hed still be the eagles starter but those injuries piled up fast on him, mac jones i didnt like as you could see his issues and the offense kept getting worse, Tbf tho im a bit bias as ive been following Love since he was in college so ive seen him evolve with time
Salary's are through the roof and arent coming down soon. With the 100's of millions each team generates per season this was inevitable. QB's at 30-50 mil a year will be a bargain soon. Cant blame the talent they know they are the Only option in a Pro highly profitable setting. I'm still miffed why Sports teams today need public funds for grand stadiums. They make enough per year too easily foot their own bills on it. But I digress.
The Jordan Love contract looks the best because no one else on the roster needs to be paid. The key defensive players on that side of the ball are already on extensions. The offensive side of the ball is still on rookie contracts or already on extensions. So who else is the cap going to go to? The only person I could think of is Preston Smith but I would hate to see him extended and rather he'd walk. On top of that, the Packers still have 20 million in cap salary left.
His salary cap number doesn’t become too large until 2027. By then, they would be signing a new contract to spread that cap hit to more years. Most important thing is the amount of guaranteed money isn’t large. If Love regresses over the next two years, they could still cut him with not too much damage to their cap space.
The issue is QB's who haven't done much at all being paid top dollar. You can say whatever you guys want, but yes, paying Love that much is a giant risk. Of the QB's listed there, I would argue that Goff is actually the most bankable. He has zero injury history (Burrow, Lamar and Tua all have injury histories), he has multiple seasons of very good play (unlike Love and Lawrence), he plays a style that will age well (unlike Lamar and Jalen), and he has had zero controversies.
The six Active Super Bowl winning quarterbacks in order of last Super Bowl won are Patrick Mahomes, Matt Stafford, Nick Foles (FA), Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers. Only the first two are still on the teams they won their Super Bowl with. Toss in five Active Super Bowl losers and you get Brock Purdy, Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Jared Goff. So 11 bowl-worthy quarterbacks are in the league. Not as dire as I thought, but still insane to think about.
It will be interesting because at some point the number will go up enough to the point that the teams with cheaper QBs will reach parity with the teams that have better QBs.
With the league constantly upping itself in terms of profit it will only keep going up, on top of that with the rules favouring offenses more than ever QB's are the primary building block for teams so even middle of the road QB's are getting paid. It's kind of created a FOMO effect where teams worry if they let a half decent QB go they will struggle to replace them.
When you actually break down the numbers, Mahomes is still one of the highest paid until 2027 or 2028. I forgot which sports show I heard it on, but Mahomes will be getting like $215 million total over the next 3 or 4 years.
The packers have seen him in their building for 4 years and that factored into their decision. Just because the public only saw one season doesn't mean that's all they're going off of too. It's always a risk giving out big contracts, but clearly they felt comfortable enough to do it or they wouldn't have done it.
@@kurtwicklund8901 Couldn't they just have used the franchise tag on him, wait for him to get another year of experience under his belt, and then offer the big contract?
@@Grable424 But little of that is in game experience, which does matter more than training and practice. The defenses in practice won't be going as hard on the offense as a real opponent as they don't want to risk unnecessary injuries.
@@HCBailly clearly they had enough faith to pay him and didn’t want to wait for the price to go up. I’ll trust the packers judgement on QBs. Also the packers generally do not like franchise tagging players unless it is a last resort which I appreciate. It is disrespectful especially to your starting QB.
All that would do is make the entire cap for everyone not rise as much as it should and more money would go to the owners instead of the players. I'm always going to be rooting for the players to get more, and these big QB contracts pressure them to raise the cap every year. The NFL is raking in so much damn money now, the players should be benefiting from it.
Theres gonna be some lower round QB who's making bench money that'll come in for a much higher paid starter and go on a run to win it all. These QBs deserve the money bc they put asses in the seats more than anyone else, but the fact that even medicore QBs can now ask for 35-40 million is gonna make teams move off lower level QBs like RBs.
There aren’t 20 elite QBs in the NFL, they’re paying Love with not a ton of evidence. Packers fans have been spoiled by great QB after great QB, they assume this is just the obvious next man up. Could be worth it. Dude has won nothing, you’re paying him more than Mahomes. This is more of a wishful guess than anything. Half the league has an argument they have a better QB. You “lucked” in to Farve, you backed in to Rodgers, and now you want luck to be Mahomes… or even the overrated Rodgers and Farve. You’re stadium is more storied than your team.
They’ve saw 4 years from Love, and are we really comparing run around RG3 to Love who showed the highest highs of throws and throws from different platforms and arm angles? Not to mention the cap hits for the packers are low.
@@Matt-yq3gqLove has only played 27 NFL games in his time with the Pack, so I don’t know what 4 years you are alluding to. RGB3 had great expectations after his rookie year and never became elite, that is the comparison I was using as an example. I hope Love succeeds, but only time will tell. 🤷🏻♂️Can’t wait for the season to start👍
@@FRANKSNAKE71 because the pack have had 4 years to observe him. RG3 ran for almost 1000 his first year, that’s why his expectations were high, but he was the same stereotypical QB that put himself in harms way and wasn’t throwing from the pocket well or making high arm talent throws. Love made the throws while going on like a 20-1 TD to INT ratio stretch of play and isn’t a QB who’s dependent on his legs, RG3 never did that, and his actual ability to play NFL QB caught up to him he was what eventually happened, same thing with a guys like Vince young, or insert so many good college QBs. Not good. Love is an entirely different QB and why it’s not a relevant example. We have to look at the context of a one year sample size, instead of just calling it a one year sample size
@@Matt-yq3gqI think you are missing the point and just restating your opinion. No worries. 1year sample size as a Starting QB no debate. Anyway enjoy the season Matt!
In the NFL, if your QB is bad then you're screwed anyway. It's not like you're going to say "oh, this guy's bad, I guess we'll need to go overpay for a star QB in free agency" because you will never have the opportunity to pay for a star QB in free agency. The best you will ever get in FA is Kirk Cousins. Either young Kirk Cousins who had shown flashes but hadn't proved that he was a permanent above-average starter in the league, or old Kirk Cousins, who is a proven starter but coming off of a serious injury. If you wanted Lamar Jackson last off-season, maybe you could have had him... for 2-3 1st round picks AND a fully guaranteed contract at record price, similar to the Deshaun Watson situation in Cleveland. And probably not at that price either. So if it gets to contract time and you really think your QB might be a franchise guy then you have to pay him. You just have to. Or trade him for a boatload of picks and hope that you find the next guy in the next draft while you tank for this season, which is far from a sure thing, despite what the Packers have pulled off over the last 20 years.
Without Mahommes, drafting a star QB, immediately starting him, and surrounding him with talent is the only play that makes sense. Let them walk after rookie deals.
That only works if you can just find a star QB in the draft every 5 years: if it was that easy, teams would just do that and not have to pay these guys $55 mil per year...........only problem is finding a star QB in the draft is hard: you might be in QB purgatory for years and years
@@joeo4496 Yeah. The story of a great QB draft prospect not working out well in the NFL is an ancient story that repeats itself. In the 1998 draft Peyton Manning was the No.1 pick. Well regarded prospect. Started for the Colts immediately. They had a bad record but you saw promise in his play. The No. 2 pick was Ryan Leaf. A lot of promise, too. Started immediately for the Chargers and was terrible. For a long time when someone says Draft Bust, Ryan Leaf was the name that came up to exemplify the title. Teams work hard to examine these upcoming prospects, but the simple matter is that the level of competition between College and the NFL is just vastly different. Some will go on and do well in the pros. Some will do poorly. And more than likely, they'll just do alright. But for the QB position, is an "alright" QB what you want? People want a Mahomes, Manning coming out of the draft and slinging the ball like a prodigy. More than likely that's not what you're going to get.
@@kurtwicklund8901 That paying Jordan Love that much was justified. He might be worth it, but this was an extremely premature decision. Tom almost never criticizes any Packers decision that was not made in a specific game and tends to instantaneously justify any decision made by the front office as correct (even if he criticized other teams like the Jaguars for making an identical decision).
@@moonjelly5If you go back to T-Law contract GPSC video you can see Tom is still saying the same things in that video as he is right now. Even predicted that Jordan Love would get a similar contract.
@@moonjelly5it’s only premature in your or others minds because of the situation the packers put themselves in by having Jordan sit 3 years so the sample size is smaller. That sample size included one of the best stretches of qb play in league history not only statistically but by the eye test as well, so it wasn’t just some fluke stat padding dink and dunk play. You are paying Love for what he will be, not the past. They have seen him for 4 years, while the world has only seen 1. What people fail to acknowledge is the reality of the actual contract. The only thing that really matters in the contract are the salary cap hits and the guaranteed money. 55 mil per year is so the players and agents can feel good about themselves and for morons on the internet to whine about. Loves cap hits the next 4 years are 20, 29, 36, and 42 million with it ballooning on the 5th year. At that point you simply rip up the deal and do a new one assuming he’s still a franchise QB. Love got less guaranteed money than many QBs so the packers made out nicely not having Love take up a massive percent of the cap (which also always goes up). Lawrence’s deal is similar. Meanwhile a deal like Tuas isn’t team friendly. Mahomes just had to restructure to lower his 24 hit to 37 mil, and the cap hits in the coming years are in the high 60s. These numbers are much higher than Love. If you keep getting top 10 QB play from Love, it’s a fantastic contract for the packers, and if he just turns into some middle of the road guy or completely regresses, you’re not truly paying that much and you move on in 3 years or whatever.
I expect Mahomes wanting to restructure his contract and get a better deal soon. That a bunch of chump QBs are being paid more than the unquestionably best QB in today's NFL is laughable.
Why should I care if the NFL'S insane revenue bubble bursts? I do not own a team. I am not a contract player or coach. Their profits can crater for all I care.
Burrow - 5-2 in the Playoffs, including a Super Bowl run with THE Worst Offensive Line in Super Bowl History, AFTER Tearing his ACL...FOR THE BENGALS. They had 5 TOTAL Playoff Wins before Burrow.... Hurts - Super Bowl Run...2-2 in Playoffs Herbert - 0-1 in Playoffs, plays in LA and that alone shifts the QB salary higher... Love - 13 Total Victories....... Tua - not even going to put him in the same league as above due to Injury History and playoff record... The Browns completely screwed up the QB market tbh...and Herbert, Love, and Tua are all benefiting off Burrow and Hurts contracts.
Disagree. Unless you have the top qb in your conference, just draft one first round, try winning for five years, maybe one year of the franchise tag, then rotate.
winning record isn’t, but winning superbowls is a silly metric. basically no AFC QBs from 2004-2020 would have gotten paid if the standard was beating Brady/Pats then winning the superbowl. it would be like, Brady, Big Ben, Manning and Flacco with the only contracts (and as a Ravens fan, Flacco’s dumbass contract after 2012 cost nearly all of their weapons because of one lucky playoff run he never came close to replicating)
I'm sorry, but no QB should be getting paid more than Mahomes until they've at least somewhat proved otherwise. 3 MVP's, 3 Super Bowl MVP's. That entire Rich Eisen list has 1 MVP. QB's have become waaaaayyyyyy overvalued
@@shadow_td he’s making 50 million a year between 2023 and 2026 seasons… they restructure his contract, but that doesn’t fit the narrative now does it😂
LMAO! Dumbest move the Packers have ever made. Love has 6 good games all season, and now he's worthy of all that? The NFL is a joke. And I'm a 40 yr Packer fan. Don't know how much longer though. New rules are BS too.
similar thing with baker and the bucs, I don't know that baker is top 10 but he helped the bucs gte just as far or farther in the playoffs than the packers jags and dolphins did this season
@@idawg7332baker and geno will cost 39 mil against their cap next year while Loves is 29. The packers are in great shape financially, while almost ever other team has their QB cap hits ballooning sooner and higher
The price of his services now is so expensive that he has to win multiple super bowls to justify the bill. I understand that NFL brain rot demands that any QB that shows the slightest bit of success (no matter how small the sample size) will get paid and good on the players. I also think that they all must bow at the statue of Mahomes and thank him for completely changing the parameters for what the best QB can do for a franchise. Because of his influence dudes are getting PAID that frankly don’t have any business being paid more than Mahomes. IMO the only QB deserving of money $45+ m apy is Mahomes. I know the Love contract will look better after a few years because the price for even mediocre QBs has only gone up, but that’s still a lot for not much proof. I guess my question to the packers, Jags, and dolphins is what’s the goal here? Is it to win a Super Bowl or is it to not have to search for the next great QB because it’s too hard?
Mahomes is making 50 million a year between 2023 and 2026 when they restructured his contract… of course you won’t hear that on the sports media because then They couldn’t have you idiots talking like this😂
This is my hot take for the NFL. Its used to be a “blue collar” sport where the average person could watch a game for “free” and people could be a fan for a team and go to games. But the league has gotten more “exclusive” where you need different streaming to watch your team. Teams force relocation to have public funds for new stadiums where they can install suites and corporate boxes to price out the regular NFL fan. You see it with the NBA now where it’s just a corporation instead of sports.
Has any team in recent NFL history won a super bowl while overpaying and average QB???? No, they haven’t lol I think this was such a goofy move, same with the Tua deal, same if the Cowboys sign dak
Packers had to get Love’s contract done before the Cowboys did anything with Dak. Everyone knows the Cowboys are stupid and Jerry clearly will overpay for a mediocre QB. The Goff contract, to me, really screwed with the QB market. He is a decent QB, and I agree you have to pay your guy, but his and Trevor Lawrence’s deals put the Packers in a position where they had to pay Love top dollar.
