Why The Phillies Are The SMARTEST Team in Baseball

How did the Phillies make the World Series????
Going into the 2022 season the Philadelphia Phillies had the 4th highest payroll in all of Major League Baseball yet the longest active playoff drought in the National League.
Castellanos and Schwarber were crucial signings for the Phillies, but Bryce Harper's injury forced them to play in the field.
Now going into the Postseason the Phillies have one of the worst defensive teams in the MLB.
But what if I told you that by the time the playoffs started the Phillies' bad defense did not affect the outcome of their games?
With a combination of trade deadline upgrades, improving young players, and analytics, the Phillies were able to win games in the postseason despite not having very good defenders.
IMPORTANT PICK-UPS:
Brandon Marsh
Edmundo Sosa
WHY?
it created platoons in the lineup
POSTSEASON:
Standout postseason performers were Nick Castellanos, Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber, Brandon Marsh, Rhys Hoskins, and Bryce Harper
OUTLIERS:
Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos, Alec Bohm, Rhys Hoskins, and Bryce Harper did not crack under the pressure and performed above their regular season stats during the postseason.

If Castellanos returns to form, this offense will be horrifying, especially once Bryce returns. Trea Turner is going to boost the offense and defense tremendously, and I expect Bohm, Stott and Marsh to all make large strides and huge offensive improvements. Adding Taijuan Walker is great and will take the pressure off of Nola, Wheeler and Suarez, and then all of the beast arms that Dombrowski added to the bullpen will totally revamp that as well. Plus not to mention they have Painter, Abel, etc who are scary good coming up from the minors, and give the Phillies some future stud pitching depth or trade deadline pieces to acquire other stars, and Rob Thompson now has a full year under his belt. This Phillies team should be scary in 2023, and very fun to watch. The way last year ended left them very very hungry.

I am a die-hard Phillies fan. You are a homer. The Phillies barely made the playoffs last year as a wildcard, and then did great in the playoffs. Your prediction for Bohm, Stott and Marsh is baseless boosterism. Beast arms in the bullpen? Let's see them pitch before we conclude they're beasts. Let's see how the minor league pitchers pitch before concluding that they're scary good. I want to see Painter in the rotation out of spring training. And it's Thomson, not Thompson. The Phillies will be scary in 2023? Have you seen what the Mets and Braves did? The Phillies will be picked to make the playoffs as a wild card. Hardly scaring anyone. Reality check complete. Go Phils.

Even though the phillies lost the world series they still exceeded expectations. After all, they were the first team in the post season to defeat the Houston Astros who entered the series with no postseason loss. I think Marsh is going to develop into a good hitter. He showed flashes in LA but they really don't develop hitters good there . As a Phils fan I would love that. But our division is rough lol. Every game's a grind and there are so many heartbreakers but we also get to mash on them haha. Your division is not the same but it is getting stronger and will be more competitive this year imo b/c every team but the A's is stronger. And then I wonder how much all that even matters with this new schedule where we have fewer division games (which I think is awful, btw). Anyway, Houston is a very great team that will take advantage of every mistake. It was a very interesting series, and it'd be fun to run it back! Here's hoping...
@hankpigate943
@hankpigate943 Год назад
As an Astros team that just lost the world series to the braves only a year ago idk why Phillies were the only team you feared. Props to Philly on a good post season run, but they are only the third best team in their division. Braves, dodgers, and Mets are much more comparable to the Astros.
@Gestr3482
@Gestr3482 Год назад
@@hankpigate943 When the Phillies find their stroke, they are very dangerous. They will put crooked numbers on anyone. You really have to have your best day, which a team like the Astros will have. But we don't have to beat the Astros right now. Right now, it's the Mets and the Braves - the former folded when it got tough in September (again) and we kicked the latter's dicks in. In 4.
@hankpigate943
@hankpigate943 Год назад
@@Gestr3482 you beat us in the playoffs once and lost to the Astros in the one that mattered...braves are coming off 5 straight division wins and won the world series over the team that beat the Phillies just a year ago. Yes the Phillies can go off when their hot and they have a couple studs at the top of the rotation....the braves can do everything the Phillies can do but better, with more depth and actually being able to defend. Playoffs are a crapshoot to be honest. Good luck chasing that wild card as braves and Mets are fighting for the division again. Maybe you get hot at the right time like last year but you got to make the playoffs first. But I guess that's something your not used to because last year was the first time the Phillies have been in the playoffs since.....it was a while lol
@Gestr3482
@Gestr3482 Год назад
@@hankpigate943 dude I'll chase a wildcard, I don't give a fuk. They aren't going to let FEWER teams into the Postseason, now, are they? A lot of times it's a good thing, especially now that chasing 100 wins means you start the Postseason cold waiting for a 3-game series to end. Winning a division matters less than ever cuz that's how MLB wants it. The truth is that if both these teams do what they're supposed to, they'll both be playing in October.

Phillies fan here - great work! I was waiting for you to mention Sosa. He also moved around and played plenty of 3rd with Bohm at DH or played 3rd late in games. Could play 2nd if needed as well as corner outfield occasionally. He was such an underrated pick up. Bohm made a lot of improvements in the 2nd half of the season leading up to his impressive playoff performance at 3rd. I was in St Louis for some of those plays in Game 2, it was huge. I did not know that about Castellanos - I knew he made a lot of plays in that specific part of the field but did not realize the Phillies slightly shifted his positioning. It is frustrating that those are routine plays for a guy like Vierling or Guthrie but at the end of the day, Castellanos made the play and got the out. So excited for the Phils in 2023! I am a 64 year old man born and raised in north Philly. A crazy ass Phillies fan win or lose am always right there with my PHILLIES. I have always taken a lot of abuse for being a Phillies crazy fan. 2022 is going to be the second Best Phillies team in my heart. 93 is the number one team. Why because the 93 team was a bunch of guys no other teams wanted. So they became the team of misfits. And they were going to show the baseball world that they were the hardest team to play against. And last year 22 was a team that like this thing saids. They were not going to be able to win without a good defensive team on the field. But they learned how to win with the players they had and went out to get. I don't have to many more years to live. But I am going to go to my box of ashes knowing that I loved the best baseball teams ever in the greatest sports city in the world. And I will never forget what the Philadelphia FLYERS gave me when I was 14 years old. The cup and the biggest championship parade ever. Over two million people and me 😊. You’re missing the point. What the phillies believed in is that any defender, whether good or bad, can make a game-ruining error at any point, and any defender good or bad can save you a game with a great play, like Castellanos did, and in a small timespan like the postseason, you’re not gonna see a huge difference between a great fielder and a bad one in terms of runs saved. Therefore, according to their strategy, if what you want to do is win in the postseason, it’s pointless to pay a premium for signing great defenders, and they’d rather get great bats, regardless of how bad they may be defensively, since their impact is more immediate and palpable.
@rjlt4841
@rjlt4841 Год назад
@@ej5417 Their bats did carry them to a NL Championship but the Astros beat them because of their fielding as well as their hitting and pitching. I understand the point you're trying to make, but it should also be noted that the Astros prioritize defense and they ultimately won it all including 100+ wins and have been the model of consistency along with the Dodgers. The name of the game is to get on base, put pressure on the defense, and create scoring opportunities. Pitching/defense have the upper hand so to ignore them in preference for offense is not a long term winning strategy. I don't think this is what the Phillies are doing by any means, but just saying there is a reason the mantra "defense wins championships" has been around for so long.

Kind of like Moneyball except we had a bunch of $$$$ to spend! Lol..... Actually not the same, but Moneyball (Oakland A's 2002 last to first season) did focus on On Base Percenatges more so than any other stat or even whether or not an individual could play his position above average.. Just curious if you have seen any other team in the past decade that had a similar model? I will say that watching an explosive offense with power at most spots, makes for an extremely fun game to watch, and I would imagine filling stadium seats quicker!

The Phillies will be improved on defense in 2023. They have to the staff and the players are capable. Well maybe not Hoskins but that’s ok I guess. If he hits 30+ homers I can live with that.

First time to this channel and the analysis and editing was great. But please do something about your script phrasing. It sounded as if you were cutting out all the natural pauses in speech while at the same time ending every phrase with a higher pitch as if you’ve got a next line to say, but no it’s a new sentence and point. Again, great video, but it was hurting my brain trying to follow along

In game 5 of the World Series, each team had critical plays in center field and at `st base. In the first inning, instead of giving himself room to play the carom off the wall, Marsh chased Altuve;s shot all the way onto the track allowing the ball to ricochet passed him and Altuve to get the 3rd instead of playing it correctly and holding him to a double. If he's at 2nd the infield isn't in and Pena doesn't drive Altuve in. In the 9th, McCormick makes one of the greatest World Series catches on pretty much the exact same ball. In the 8th, Hoskins botches Alvarez's grounder allowing Altuve to score and Mancini makes the stop on Schwarber's shot down the line. In the pivotal game 5, Houston won a one run game because of these critical defensive plays.

Nice video. I don't like analytics though. Some not all, it gets a bit ridiculous with percentages for every single thing in the game jeez. How tight their glove stitching is, the grass was mowed 1 centimeter shorter, Bohm has a 12% chance to strike out because his left shoelace were tighter than his right.

Last time I checked there are 30 MLB teams. 25th is bottom 6 (not bottom 5). And it's MLB, not "the MLB". (Sorry to nitpick, but I'm salty about this video because my team just loaded up on defense 😆)

What position does Bryce Harper play on defense? I think 🤔 he's an outfielder? If he's a DH, then he shouldn't have to worry about defense, just the offense. Great upload today! 👍🏾👌🏾

@CleverCoz
@CleverCoz Год назад
Bryce Harper typically would play RF over Castellonos and Castellonos would be moved to left so that Schwarver can DH. Harper has a torn UCL and needs arm surgery so he was only hitting to finish the season and now getting the surgery during the off-season.
