oh boy a cool historical video, I hope it wont make any political statements in relation to modern day that curtails only to one political spectrum. Guess it was too much to ask for
It doesn't absolve it, but it doesn't change that he gave a lot and raised his children well if all that is true. If nothing else, I can admit that he gave his all in being the type of person he want to be, as a businessman, a private person, and a father, which I can respect - something that I can't say of the rich of today.
That's called skeptical, though You can do your own research by reading a contemporary biography that goes at great lengths comparing sources and being objective like _The Titan_ and make your own informed opinion.
Exactly! His education system programmes one to be a slave worker over being an entrepreneur. No critical thinking is needed, just useless repetition. No creationism but garbage evolution. His health system removed nature and gave us poison in vaccines and drugs.
All of it. They twisted the true intent of what they were doing under the guise of philanthropy. They own the means to twist the narrative and they have gaslit the public for generations.
I’ve only watched the first 20 seconds of this video but I’m already impressed. When you said he was the first billionaire I thought he only had 1 billion, and then you mentioned that he lost 10 billion…
A decent video, but misinformed in quite a few crucial ways. For example, Rockefeller retired from Standard Oil and focused solely on philanthropy in 1870s. Yes, 1870s. By 1911 when the Standard Oil co was finally forced to break down into smaller companies he had already for long nothing to do with the company's operations. In fact he even refused to advice his executives. He had a lot of children with different fates. One of them was spending her life in Switzerland studying psychoanalysis with Carl Jung, for Pete's sake. Also, "when after his death 1934 his children took over the company" is so wrong on so many levels. Again, he was retired from running the company for 50 years by that moment. Also, there was no company at this point, there was only a group of companies that shared the same legacy. Next, probably the only child who actually went in his father's footsteps was John Jr. Rockefeller, and he entered the company many decades before his father's death.
You're wrong. He may have "retired" from the company but he (and later his heirs) still owned majority shares in the Standard Oil. Ironically, the family wealth grew exponentially after SO was broken up into multiple businesses by congress and they all became successful as well.
I found myself disappointed as the question I wanted answered was the title of the video, "Why The Rockefeller Fortune Will Last Forever". I do not believe this was answered. You expressed how he gained his money, not how his heirs are spending/perpetuating it.
@9:10 Standard Oil was a company from 1870 to 1911, when it was broken up. Im not sure what he was trying to say, but it sounded to me that he said standard oil had only been founded in 1926.
You did not, of course, entirely prove the title of the video. In particular, you did not say what the "Rockefeller Fortune" looks like today, how stability is ensured (beyond the mythological origins), and my favorite, without looking into the present or future, you did not discuss the guillotine, which is kinda a must for any claim that any status or riches will remain "forever".
In my book, he is the greatest industrialist and capitalist of all time, without a doubt. I watched the video by Patrick Boyle on him and two other titans of equal greatness but that covered his business exploits more. This video helped show why he was so good, every single advantage possible was given to him, a father that trained him in deceit and cunning, a mother who trained him in patience and frugality, an ironclad faith that kept him humble, a drive based in religion to keep making more money, a naturally intelligent business mind and most importantly, tons and tons of luck all throughout his business dealings. It all now seemed almost inevitable looking back. Great video, never change your style.
He was NOT the philanthropist that history claims he was. The reasons he put money into education, medicine, etc... was all nefarious. Families like this one have created and ruled the terrible system that is currently in place. They have manipulated us, gaslit us, and are taking orders from those even higher on the food chain like the Rothschilds.... they sold their soul to be Gods on earth.
Patrick Boyle said that the US electronics industry was developed by free market capitalism. It wasn't. It was developed by the military and the government. I'd take what he said with a pinch of salt.
I like how this video made him seem like he was a man of kindness. In reality, Rockefeller was a ruthless businessman and because of him several laws were put in place that promoted fair business competition.
He was indeed ruthless, but everything that he did as a businessman was considered ethical and legal at his time. He also was one of the few oilmen that didn't send bandits to burn the oil wells of their competitors.
Legacy. Ancient Rome, the British Empire, Chinese Dynasties, Japanese Empire, the men who started the World Wars, the Founding Father's of the US... Their Legacy will last for much of humanity's future and knowledge on history.
@ThinkingYesimathinkee-pz1rf They don't exist now, but the figures, accomplishments, languages and advancements made are what we will remember. Remember, even now, Latin root words since Ancient Roman times affect languages today, their water systems still inspire awe at how effectively they could move water to multiple cities where it was needed (Aqueducts) etc.
@@MTSP-pe2fn Some will have a stronger impact and presence than others in time, but you can't tell me that people like Adolf Hitler won't be remembered, whether they be famous or infamous, for generations of humans to come.
John D Rockefeller created the general education board in 1903 which even shapes today's schools. The same man that quoted , "I don't want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers".
"Grew up in a household divided between strict 'moral code' and loose business ethics." If that doesn't show that business isn't absolutely corrosive & corrupt, I don't know what does.
Sounds very similar to Ingvar Kamprad. The man behind IKEA. In Sweden we have a saying that people from the province Småland where he was from are very cheap sin that they count every penny and he embodied that stereotype. Even when he was very rich he would ride only in humble cars such as the Volvo 240 (Back then Volvo was not a luxury brand but a people’s car brand and the 240 the cheapest model) and reuse his teabags to save pennies on tea.
By one account, John D. Rockfeller was very hardworking, opening his hardware store at 6am, going to church on Sunday morning. After saving some money, he went to the Middle East. There he wrote an Agreement in Principle with one Sheikh, for drilling rights. In exchange, he built four mansions and provided four limousines for the Sheikhs wives. Soon he struck oil! And he printed some letterheads, Standard Oil Co, and raised money from his bank and associates...and soon he became the American Dream.
Let’s be real, he didn’t fund the school system out of a sense of duty! “I want a nation of workers not thinkers”. He wanted to get at kids early and teach them to conform to keep a supply of young bodies for his factories
Astoundedly wrong. He did it out of a sense of duty, because he believed that the only way people would escape poverty and have social mobility was through better education in order to have a better country, and he was right. He was sponsoring schools for african americans when it was “questionable” to some white americans, and spending millions on public higher education when it still was for privileged kids to go to college. Medical science advanced 100 years in 30 because he paid for it, to the point of knowingly let himself be ripped of by greddy doctors and scientists as long as they gave results. Better go read the full biography to have a wider vision of the man
You painted a pretty picture of an ugly man. He was raised by a family of criminals and was a deviant from the start. He deliberately shaped the world into a bunch of mindless have-nots so his lineage could remain powerful. I can't see anything he did as charitable. He was callous, ruthless and without remorse for who he ran over in the process to get to the top. All of his philanthropy, religious background and living a modest lifestyle was just an image. No man of strong moral fiber would go to those kind of lengths to achieve such a high degree of wealth. One could say he cared about his family, but he did so at the expense of the entire world. You can't choose what you care for and then have no conscience for anything/anyone else. That is false righteousness.
Hey man, this guy put in the work and set his family up for success, even generations later. Say what you want about how some rich folk get away with more than regular folks do, there's some admiration in the fact he was on a grind that gave him billions. To the degree that the Great Depression didn't phase him much financially at all.
yes ignorant people think the rich just sit around and collect money. those that do that lose it all. it's very hard to get superrich. it takes alot of hard work and dedication.
He did put in the work, but he was also the luckiest man on the planet, who also bribed people to get where he was. I mean, he played the capitalist game perfectly, how much of that should be admirable it's up for debate
A lot of rich people got only riches during the great depression, which provided them with a lot more opportunities than they'd have had if it didn't happen.
@@ronblack7870yeah... a lot of hard work and dedication at being greedy. Ignorance is watching this video and believing it at face value when what's being said about the man is so obviously self contradictory. You can't be this righteous man with great character when you're bribing everyone and taking every opportunity to screw your competition in order to secure a monopoly. Sure, there's some things to admire about the man, no doubt. He may have helped a lot of people but how many people did he destroy along the way? This is a very sanitized history of the man but as the saying goes, history is written by the victor. He not only ruined the lives of so many people in his own Era, but his legacy continues to live among the policitians/rich people of today. He set an example for them to follow and they've become exceedingly good at exploiting us.
Wealth of the wicked is layed up for me they shall gather it up but I shall put it on he that by usery and Unjust gain increaset his substance he shall gather it up for me because I pity the poor they work for me
He's a mixture of Good and evil 😶being a child of Con artist and a devoted Christian woman clash his personality. Scheming business market but still remain a philanthropic man and a good family man is something else 😅
And now, let's talk about, another family who has been operating a monopoly for at least 20-25 years. I wonder, who can guess, the name before I speak it.The Waltons. Yes them, Walmart has been treating their employees like crap, for many years. And, I totally believe, if it wasn't for Amazon being so successful, but at least they attempted to pay a reasonable wage. Walmart would have never giving their employees raises. But the government, was sure to keep their eyes closed and have turned their head completely away from Walmart. And let them run their monopoly freely, well not completely freely, I'm pretty sure they have donated a healthy portion, to the importing politicians in our society.
Nice video! Did you just say "97 years YOUNG" 😂 George Carlin used to make fun of trying to avoid unpleasant words like 'old' 🤣you reminded me of him 😉
By prepare him for the pitfalls of capitalism, he means how to exploit capitalism for personal gain, Rockefeller was one of the pitfalls of capitalism.
"For every $10 made, the first 3 went to the church" Th tithe is supposed to be 10% so for every $10 it would be $1 goes to the church. The 30% reference in the video is pretty steep, even for the church.
the question should really be, was he better with the money than what the rest of the oil company owners would have been, its unanswerable but probably a yes. sounds like his kids had everything they needed and still financial stability for them and their childrens children. take away the business practices and he was probably better than every billionaire that exist today.
Another college that wasn't mentioned: Rockefeller's wife is the namesake of Spelman college, an all-women's historical Black college (HBCU) located in Atlanta, GA.
So the video didn't explain the title, that was quite misleading/clickbaity. And i also get the impression it's giving us a very one-sided profile of this person, i'd imagine there were more shady practices involved in his rising to fortune other than just being competitive against his peers.
Hahahahahaha, this has to be a comedy piece or something... Over 75% of the video in before the first "criticism" that came from others XD... What kind of obvious propaganda piece is this? I was laughing the whole time, can't believe this was made in this day and age
God is teaching me about the greedy crooks in life and you really need to learn to deal with them. Get everything in writing and never trust anything that isn't a legal contract. John was a good man taught the rules of business by his father and a way of life by him mommy. I love and respect you John! Hopefully I can right some wrongs in this life and do some more good before my time is up.
I can understand why you'd mostly look up to the type of man portrayed in this video, but this is a very sanitized version of his life. Even in this watered down version, he still had to cheat in order to attain such wealth. It doesn't matter how philanthropic you are if you're destroying lives along the way to obtain it. Giving away a fraction of what you earned unfairly isn't charity, it's simply damage control/good PR. Being raised in the church with Christian values doesn't mean that they lived by them.
@@Tigatron1448he sold Gas at an extremely cheap price for the American people when he couldve sold it at whatever price he wanted to. He and his sons are one of the reasons the US became such a powerful country. I think you have got the wrong image of him, he for sure had authoritarian ways with his rivals but he did good for a much greater amount of people !
Psalm 49:11-14 King James Version 11 Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. 12 Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish. 13 This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah. 14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
Is seems like this video was initially made to be a completely different one. This was just a mini biography about Rockefellers strengths and proverbs. Not why his fortune will last forever passed down his descendents
What's with the poor grammar in comments? Can't make sense of whatever tf some of you are trying to say. As far as the video, very interesting and thought provoking. Sorry for the cliche but I have to say it... don't hate the player, hate the game. Ggs.
Psalm 49:11-14 New International Version 11 Their tombs will remain their houses[a] forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves. 12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish. 13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings. 14 They are like sheep and are destined to die; death will be their shepherd (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning). Their forms will decay in the grave, far from their princely mansions.
bro i wanted to hear why his fortune will last forever, instead i've just watched a video of glorifying his (questionable) charity activities for the last 10m bullshit
Dude, some of the photos you used for John D. Rockefeller's Dad were of his brother William Jr. Come on, how lazy can you get being so little thorough? Mixing up two people with the same name is a rookie mistake. That's embarrassing.
That Trump joke on evading taxes was completely unnecessary. It looked like you were singling him out, when he has probably helped more people than majority of us. All you need to do is hear of the countless stories of random strangers he helped. He takes advantage of the tax code just like any rich person. Besides, if we're going to attack Trump, why not attack more egregious tax evading billionaires?
Johns biggest mistake was that he didnt buy a bank, had he done so that wouldve sealed his power through his kids. Money is energy and Energy is money.

News flash the world ain't going to be here forever and all the money in the world ain't going to save him from rotisserie in hell over open flames like a chicken
Those billionaire have money to give their child but instead decide to teach their child how to earn. But we commoner don't have money to give our kid in first place.
Not all billionaires teach or encourage their children to earn. Some just give them the wealth and they fritter it away into nothing after a few generations.
As least they can teach them how to earn or just give a load of money directly. We don't have money to give in first place, and may don't even know how to teach them.@@Mady-lo6qb
While we think the way he got rich by today's standard was not ethical. He was only playing by the rules of the day. Who knows 100 years from now what totally normal behaviour we have will be deeply criticized by future generations.
There's a point where you should realize and acknowledge when you have enough, and taking more really is just depriving it from everyone else, or it's about controlling everybody else. That's the point where greed really does become a sin, and all the other stuff you do to look and act pious and moral really is just a façade.
What is “enough”? Successful enterprises either make money or don’t make money. You just don’t stop the business because “it’s enough for today”; it’s a machine that keeps generating revenue. What Rockefeller did was to put all that money in service of his society and eventually the world; but that level of charity also needs money to keep going. So the question is again: what is enough? As much as you can handle, to live and to give
@@gadget00 It's enough when further growth comes at the cost of creating monopolies and cartels that have shifted from serving the population to basically controlling it and milking it. A productive business earns it's keep by creating value. A predatory business, on the other hand, focuses more on extracting value by controlling access at some choke point or monopolizing some resource everyone needs. The more concentrated business becomes, the more it tends to do the later, rather than the former. The economy as a whole can grow just as well or better when it's divided up into lots of competing companies, rather than a few, and better for economic, social and political reasons when it does. On a personal level, enough is enough when getting more makes NO real difference in your daily options, even though it could easily make a life changing difference to others. If you're a millionaire, you can pretty much do whatever you want, every day for the rest of your life. Security isn't really an issue for you unless you're basically gambling really irresponsibly. The same is true but more so if you're a billionaire. A thousand millionaires have the same amount of money as a single billionaire. A thousand millionaires is a healthier distribution of the money, especially since people really can be self made millionaires, but billionaires almost always start from generational wealth, and aristocracies are toxic for societies in general.
He created schools to make people just smart enough to work at his companies but not so smart as to grow up like him and be a competitor of his… he’s not this amazing man like you’re portraying…
I admire Rockefeller for his innovations, his drive, and his achievements. He did what few other men in his time could have or would have done, and the world would be the poorer for his not having lived. . Do I approve of everything he did? Nope. But here's what's more important: I only have 3rd or 4th hand sources telling me how they feel about what he did. If I were to judge the morality of his business ethics, I would have to make a much more detailed investigate of primary sources and form an opinion. I have neither the time to search nor access to resources, so I'm not going to make a call on whether he was right or wrong. If he truly did have the strict religious upbringing and did all the philanthropy this video credits him with, then I would say he is what most of us are even at our best: a flawed human being who did what he thought was right and didn't always take the moral path. In his situation, would I have fared any better? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe I would have done worse.
