I grew up during Cartoon Network's Golden Era (late 90's to 2000's), and even I can admit that the 2010's was surprisingly pretty good. Sure, we had endless Teen Titans Go marathons and the Powerpuff Girls reboot, but we also had Adventure Time, Gumball, Steven Universe, and Craig of the Creek. Basically, the good stuff outweighs the bad. I do fear for CN's future as well. With the network repeating the same mistakes with Cartoonito (anyone remember Tickle U?) and adding in more live action stuff, it's like executives failed to forget why the channel was great to begin with. Genndy Tartakovsky is creating more shows with the in-house studio, and I have no doubt they'll be great, but it's going to take more than Genndy to make Cartoon Network great again.

It's not just Cartoon Network, even other platforms, where we thought would be safer for these kinds of mediums like HBO Max, are doing their best to erase animation as a whole, and that's not right or fair at all. Seriously, it's bad enough that the Oscars will never recognize animation as a proper medium deserving of awadds, but to have other mainstream platforms do the same? Something's got to be done, and I think it's time animators banded together and made their own platform for their shows, because the future looks rather bleak for animation, with the way how things are going

IMO, I think CN, Nick and Disney are now moving into being put on life support, especially with more people using streaming services like HBOmax, Disney+, Paramount+, Hulu, Netflix and etc, and ratings just plummeting down every year. Hell, kids don’t even watch those channels anymore. I think the main parent companies of all these channels (Viacom, Warner and Disney) are just waiting to see a certain amount of revenue, and customers they can get out of these streaming services before they officially pull the plug on them.

CN ‘s state began worrying me when they haven’t officially renewed Mao Mao season 2 for over three years. That show is one of the best animated series I’ve seen in a long time and it’s increasingly disheartening that CN is boarding up a potential gold mine. I guess they *kinda forgot* that series existed. 🙄 With that said, I don’t think CN is in Nickelodeon-level trouble. The problem with modern cartoon networks is that most of these shows are forgettable and uninteresting and sometimes either crap or mediocre. And the people behind in today's CN are really doing a terrible job running the company. As someone that got into Cartoon Network when their family first got satellite TV around 2001, I basically agree with a lot of the stuff said in this video. I loved CN growing up, and I slept on some amazing hits until I was able to watch them reliably online in my adulthood, but I could just tell that shows were of a different breed during my childhood than they are right now. This isn't a bad thing, but a lot of shows feel less...potent than they were in the early 2000s before the dark times. That's not to say modern shows are bad, but I feel that outside of the outliers like Infinity Train, there's a pulp, a texture, a punch, missing from anything that's come out considerably in the past 5 years from CN. I also wanna tack on that as long as shows like Teen Titans GO exist, animation will never shake its stigma of not being a respectable form of storytelling. When shows that are just visual noise get seven or eight seasons, but great stories like Infinity Train and OK KO get cut short, that tells Hollywood executives all that they need to know.

Some people say “Oh your just mad that Cartoon Network isn’t like it was in the 90s”. Not all people criticizing CN are blind on nostalgia or anything. Good video but you forgot to mention two key points as to why CN's quality has gone down and why it will keep going down. 1. Live Television is dying. Live television has been on the decline since the last decade. Warner Media has likely been cutting Cartoon Networks budget and investing in other shows for their streaming service. There is no benefit in making higher quality shows for cable when Warner could just put it on HBO Max. 2. The Warner Discovey deal is going to negatively hurt cartoon network. Merger deals kill development. Any show still in development is going to be scrutinized by a new set of eyes and most get scrapped or the show will get moved to HBO Max. Ex Learning with Pibby still hasn't been green lit and Infinity Train being moved to HBO. The new deal will also cut cartoon networks budget. The purpose of the merger was to increase catalog sizes for both streaming services. It would be best interest to cut money away from a dying medium and invest into the new market (streaming).

I grew up and saw a lot of these shows. But the more I think about it, the more I realize that it was not the live action shows as much as how they were promoted. A lot of them had very dark forms of promotions compared to the previous decade outside of the Invasion and Courage promos. Tower Prep was actually the darkest promo I remember and shows like Dude What Would Happen and Destroy Build Destroy had become controversial through outside media and news sources. Though the simplicity of bringing back the slow return to the Golden Age throughout the Renaissance was something that would be helpful, it may have been the fact that story driven shows from CN Real helped bring about the greatness of the next generation of animation. I remember that before CN Real there was many shows that were stuck in the show to show episodic format. But after that there was a huge amount of story and plot driven shows that became their own sources like Adventure Time on both the Cartoon Network and Disney Channel channels. Gravity Falls would have never been the hit it was had nothing been done to help people see that episodic format was losing the minds of those who watched it in favor of story driven shows with a plot that would be able to extend the show to more than children. I first saw all of them in my late teens and would still call this one of the best things to happen to the channels as a whole. Even Regular Show helped through merging plot and episodic format into a surprisingly cohesive merger along with Gumball.

Honestly despite being in my early 20s, as a fan of animation some of these new cartoons that the network is working on I am looking forward to some of these. My only note to cartoon network is don't do live action. While I understand why they do however it takes years to figure out how to do it. The reason why Disney and Nickelodeon do it is because they have sibling networks who practice that kinda stuff as well as years of practice. My main worry about cartoon network at the moment is that they want to be more like they're main competitors; and do live action. However what they don't realize is that they're competitors are telling them don't do what we do but do what you do. Probably not entirely the main point of your video, but given the pattern the network has had yeah. Also you forgot to mention Over The Garden Wall. And since WB needed to keep their properties alive and to make extra profit it was probably decided to make a show like ttg to milk rather than bringing back s6, furthermore it didn’t help the fact that Cn were shifting to a newer younger audience at a time

I was amaze when my brother told me there is a great cartoon shows back on Cartoon Netwrok. During that time it felt like it was back to the golden age. Where Cartoon Network was back to what it was Cartoons; however, sadly I stop watching when I saw nothing but Teen Titan Go and nothing else. Once Gun Ball and Adventure time finish there was nothing else to watch. Cartoon Network doesn't know what it want to be or how they should fix it. Sadly I don't think they can fix it. I am worried about Cartoon Network. Yet I also have ideas for what they could do to save it too! *Focus on Mao Mao again and give it more seasons (hopefully more then 3) *Give We Bare Bears one last season (We Baby Bears does not count) *Bring back Hanna Barbara/Warner shows (such as Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels, Speed Buggy, etc) *Make some more female lead cartoons *If they want to reboot a show again, make sure it’s good and not a sucker for modern cancel culture junk *Bring back Infinity Train for the last four books we need *Make Galactic Kids Next Door happen *CANCEL TEEN TITANS GO ALREADY! *Preserve all the shows removed from HBO Max thanks to Discovery *Most importantly bring back the CN city bumpers and music videos, and make some with the recent characters *minor note fix Boomerang, put back the cool toy bumpers and focus on the classic vintage shows

While on the subject of how animation was impacted in the 2010s, I feel like Gravity Falls, though worthy of its acclaim, managed to break Disney Television Animation internally. This is because, in the decade since GF premiered, nearly every show the studio has produced afterwards has prominently featured the same tropes that GF perfected - the outgoing tween girl, serialization, the alpha bitch with hidden depths, characters who are toxic influencers (although that last one didn't start until later), etc, etc. This isn't always bad - I just started rewatching DuckTales 2017 and it's still as good as I remember it - but then you look at the criticism aimed at Molly McGee for following a repetitive characterization...while the same fandom adores Andrea, despite the latter being just as recycled in terms of characterization as the former. Frankly, I am getting kinda frustrated at DTA for clinging to the GF tropes for literally half my life, to the point I'm convinced that Hailey's on It (an upcoming show) could be reviewed without actually watching it, just based on how long the formula's been used and abused. Sorry for going on so long; I'm just opinionated on a lot of stuff
@Commenter839
@Commenter839 2 года назад
LGBT rep is as much a trope as showing a Latino character in the background. Gravity Falls didn't invent it, and to even claim it popularized this is a major stretch considering Steven Universe existed back then. And Andrea isn't really toxic or a bitch. She's spoiled and a bit conceited, but she ultimately is a nice person. The only episode where she acted like a bitch was in her debut, after Molly accidentally made her angry. But in all her other appearances she's pretty nice to them, and even used her following to raise money for Molly's family to stay in Brighton. Serialization has become more popular in the years since GF, but tons of creators have stories they'd like to tell too. I agree that before Molly McGee aired Disney was a little oversaturated with them, but hopefully this show (and Miraculous Ladybug) can remind Disney that episodic comedies are just as good as serialized stories.
@bullmonty764
@bullmonty764 2 года назад
@@Commenter839 If it helps I removed the rep part of my speech in light of your reply. Also my only real exposure to Molly McGee was the earliest episodes, so that might have affected my stance on Andrea just a little. I do think that shows like McGee, though episodic, still have elements of the other shows DTA has made (Molly’s personality in particular), which is why I put it in with the others. And that kinda feeds into a point I forgot to mention - which is that despite the current crop of shows being more standalone, they’re inevitably gonna have elements of what GF popularized (or, alternatively, what Phineas and Ferb popularized, judging from what we know so far about Hamster and Gretel) because those tropes are just part of the cache of Disney’s cartoons. Rounding it out, GF didn’t popularize LGBT rep and serialization for cartoons as a whole (Avatar. That is all, at least for the latter), but you certainly saw a lot more of them afterward, especially on Disney shows. Hope I’m clearer now

I usually comment on a video of this calibre in the middle but the presentation was so good I just had to finish it so shout-out to Alpha Jay for creating imo the best introspective video on Cartoon Network to date and also to the editors for adding that extra spice to make such a cohesive video. Well, to the my opinions part of this comment (y'all gonna hate me for this smh) Teen Titans is the Riverdale of Cartoon Network I really wish I had the chance to enjoy Infinity Train back when it was new and not during the pandemic where I had to find out at 2am in the night that it had been cancelled If Teen Titans was the show that put me out of favor with CN, Craig of the Creek and MaoMao brought me back For most parts, I glad we share the same reservations for the upcoming Gumball projects but I feel that Elliott from Earth(by some sort of miracle) has the ability to be one of the best shows of this decade Finally, Ivandoe is getting a show And I can't wait to witness the future CN holds for us In conclusion, I'm only watching The night Begins to Shine spinoff for the song I've said alot only because I watched the full video from beginning to end without any distractions all thanks to the presentation. And the little world in the creek with the creek kids is just ugh I love it so much, I cant get enough of that show, they said there will be a season 4 hopefully that's true ad they even said there will be a movie. If its in theaters, my ass is finna be up in the theater. and I say that cause its extremely rare for me to actually want to see something in the movies let alone go out of my way to go watch a movie of some franchise that I hardly care for. I never knew the right words to describe that show, but it does make it feel a little more down to earth, relatable, and even more “adult” than Adventure time. Not sure I'm convinced the pandemic wasn't a bit part of the decline. Keep in mind this was still part of a transition from cable, and As for the counterargument: yeah everyone else was hit too. Nick kept the sponge going because of course, and all of its programming is focused on reboots and nostalgia. Probably canned most of its original stuff due to the pandemic. A few streaming services got one lucky break, but that's really it. WOuld have been fine a decade ago, but you need more than one hook (or one HUGE hook, on the level of Spongebob) to keep that momentum. The only slight on CN specifically is that CN was floundering between Turner figuring out if they should homespin a CN app or throw programs on HBO Max (often thought of as a "mature platform"... I mean, you really going to assossiate the place for Game of Thrones with Teen Titans Go?). The did the former for years and it was probably the wrong move, but I get why. It only seemed to be getting better and better and the network climaxed in 2012, as all of their shows seemed to peak in quality around that time. The only downside to that era was that the action shows got poor treatment. 2013 was where the network began declining, not because of TTG, but because so many shows declined in quality that year (except for ones like Gumball). 2014-2015 is where the scheduling took a toll, but was probably the last good era of CN due to good shows like We Bare Bears and Over the Garden Wall. 2016 and especially 2018-now, CN’s been dead.

@@brainthebrian3690 I mean it's a CN Show. Of course they would go for too long. Adventure Time had +280 eps, Gumball had 243 eps, Dexter's Lab had 221 segments and Johnny Bravo had 174 eps.

@@uncleshrek3614 Yeah, now that I think about it, a lot of great shows went on for too long and had crap endings, like Regular Show and Adventure Time. By the end, they kinda morphed into something weird and different from how they began, and not in a good way. Felt like they attempted more than they should’ve with the kinda shows they had. Especially with how much drama was in later Adventure Time. It just made me lose interest. I came for zany adventures in a weird land, not some convoluted love tetrahedron, or seeing Finn cope with a deadbeat dad.

I’ve been watching CN since the Chowder days, and all I see now in this channel with all these Reboots and shit is one thing: fear. CN is too scared to greenlit potentially amazing shows that could bring in tons of revenue and they play it safe by showing excessive reruns of a mediocre at best reboot(ttg)and Gumball. They had a chance to lay a new foundation with Trick Moon, but they cancelled it due to the restructuring. Also, Mao Mao was a pretty good show, not amazing, but it’s great. Why the fuck we haven’t gotten season 2 yet is beyond me.

In defense of the people who hated Thunder Cats Roar, myself inlcuded, there was one other major reason it was panned and hated as it was. The man who was creating it flat out said he hated the original and his brothers made fun of him with/for it. The general belief is that he took up this project to stick it to them as he had no attachments to either the orginal or 2011 versions of the show. The belief is that if you have no passion for what you're working on, then you shouldn't be working on it. Something I wholeheartedly agree when it comes to entertainment.

How to fix CN. They need to pump out new shows. The normal ones not just for Cartoonito. They rerun the same 3 shows that are pretty old. Teen Titans Go came out in 2013, Craig of the Creek came out in 2017 if I remember correctly, and Gumball came out in 2011. The only new show is We Baby Bears. Edit: So they are doing that we just need to wait.

They're pushing Cartoonito so heavily because (at least, on cable) preschool animation is where the profit is at. Older audiences either use streaming services or get entertainment from social media like RU-vid and TikTok.

Over the years I've noticed a recurring pattern of shows being made more and more toothless and vacant. Give it another decade and the content marketed towards 8-10 year olds will look like Peppa Pig.

As someone who was born in 2006, i was glad to be able to experience someone the greatest shows 2010 cartoon network could offer. Heck even my older cousins introduced me to their favorites like Kids Next Door, Billy and Mandy, Chowder, Camp Lazlo and all the other great things from early 2000's. It's sad to see that Cartoon Network fall down from it's prime, I pretty much stopped watching after Mao Mao and OK KO ended. I binged Amazing World of Gumball but the episodes eventually led me to a spiral of boredom. I used to be so eager to watch Cartoon Network that i'd wake up at 7 in the morning and run to my dad's room to turn on the TV. Heck I would even tell dad to skip Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on disney cause a new episode of Adventure Time was on. I'm now on a quest to find all my favorite shows on DVD and play it on my old DVD Player, I know it's weird to get it on DVD but fuck it, for nostalgia's sake I'll do anything. Can't trust websites nowadays.
