Like the channel - so won't infer they're this bad, but the worst example of geographic ignorance I've ever seen comes from a documentary called "The Imposter" years ago: 16 year old kid goes missing from his family home in Texas. 3 years later the police call the family to say they've located him in Spain. Kid's older sister or aunt, whatever... Possibly both: "They found him in Spain?! Isn't that like the other side of the country?!". 🤣

11:55 The railway going left.... You just crossed the Irish Sea into Northern Ireland before crossing it again to get in Scotland. That's physically impossible! No bridge or tunnel can ever be build over/under that sea due to its depth and the fact that tons of unused WWII bombs were dumped there after the War! Not to mention the political compilations. This is common knowledge within the UK, and I highly doubt HS2's original plan had this in it. But hey, I could be wrong. Please can someone provide the source of this impossible plan.
@MikeWillSee
@MikeWillSee Год назад
It is technically feasible to build a tunnel to Ireland. The real problems are the cost and lack of political will. In any case, that map is massively wrong. HS2 goes nowhere near Ireland, instead using the existing WCML to head north into Scotland. I have no idea how they messed up that badly.

Utzon took with him his system plans for the glass cowering the restaurants between the shelves, so today they look like submerged submarines, with a lot of tubing and the glass had to be designed with a computer program. And also the built up roof for the scenes, so today the sound isn't right and his now missing design for for operating the scenes from a central tower, also made them smaller than necessary and not the original Grand Opera stages which was planned. But his plans for using the sea water for the air-condition was made as planned, as seen from a much later English film from in- and outside the building, made by one of the Top Gear guys.

Sydney's Opera House has a unique and wonderful underground car park which is truly a marvel. Bennelong Point Parking Station, the Sydney Opera House car park, has just 7 metres of soil and rock between it and the surface of the gardens, built within a man-made sandstone cavern 42 metres into the Earth. It is a double helix concrete car park, sinking 12 storeys underground. It has become famous within the architectural and building world for its unique design as both a structure, and as a car park. Advantages of the double helix: Double helix design reduced footprint of 7,900 square metres to 2,950 square metres Gave parkers a shorter average travel distance to find a park Resulted in a shorter pedestrian tunnel Enabled the car park to have more efficient ventilation The last car parking space to be taken was now at the top, not in the bowels of the Earth Check out the remarkable design and various construction, design and usage details on: www.abc.net.au/news/2018-02-08/why-is-the-sydney-opera-house-car-park-spiral-in-shape/9270864

You miss the biggest problem of all in building the Sydney opera house. Inexcusably, Utzon's shells could never be built as specified as they were not self-supporting! This was the biggest reason the NSW government got rid of him - they thought, maybe with some justification, that he was a dreamer who could not get his maths right. Eventually the consulting engineers thought up an ingenious solution involving hidden interior cables in tension - but even that was hard and time consuming to build. And it meant the concert hall had to be smaller than intended.

SOH couldn't be built when it was designed and drove many world first innovations. Major cost blowouts were also caused by the Symphony Orchestra taking the larger Opera theatre for itself which forced the Opera into a cramped smaller theatre forcing a costly redesign mid construction. Tens of millions in cost overruns were also caused by political interference from a petty minded jealous conservative party sabotaging the project and withholding the architect Jorn Utzons fees which forced his office to close further delaying and costing the project more when the Government Architects office effectively stole the project. Despite this Utzons masterpiece was completed and is a building for 1000yrs - it has recouped its cost many times over. Its iconic and a major tourist draw.

The final shape of the shells significantly reduced the size of the auditoriums, the spherical sections curve in at the base, whereas the original undefined shape (see some of the early drawings and models) went almost vertical at the base. The original idea was to use thin shell roofs, Arup hired the world's foremost expert on thin shells, a thin shell solution was finally ruled impossible due to physics. The massively heavy, final, engineering design meant that they had to blast the original foundations to create far larger foundations - people noticed. Really, the shells didn't cost that much, stuffing them with an interior and all the associated plant was really expensive. For anyone interested, the ribs are epoxied together, normal methods like mortar were too slow and imprecise, Arups had done epoxy bonding before but not on this scale. The shells had to keep exactly to the spherical shape to within a tolerance of a few millimeters, any errors could become cumulative. I very much doubt that any "normal" building has been built to this level of accurately either before or since (and no I do not class supercolliders or their ilk as normal buildings).
@austen98
@austen98 6 месяцев назад
In essence, the project's main problems started with the government wanting construction to be started when the plans of the SOH were even completed, like building a road before you know it can take the weight of the car you are building it for. Of course, the foundation had to be reinforced to take into account the extra weight of the building. This is just one of the things that the government had the fingers in and it was the bureaucracy that drove the cost overruns in the first place, although poor Utzon took the brunt of that fury. The point I was trying to make is that any time the plans change drastically because of meddling, and there were in the case of the SOH, you get cost overruns. Take Apple's Cupertino HQ. It ran over budget by 2 billion dollars, mainly because of those issues, where Steve Jobs made many changes and wanted specific extravagant features in this building. So, the SOH isn't unique in that aspect but it does show clearly that good planning and management of such a project is key in completing it in a timely and as cost-effective manner as possible.
