In today’s video, I discuss the reasons as to why I would choose the almighty Telecaster as my desert island guitar!
Using the brand new American Professional II Telecaster from Fender, I demonstrate the impressive tonal versatility you get with the simple two-pickup design of this classic electric guitar model.
Despite the fact that the Stratocaster has more options - with it’s three pickups and 5-way selector switch - I still find the Telecaster to be a more versatile sounding guitar. A big part of that, as mentioned in the video, is down to the tonal characteristics of the Telecaster’s bridge pickup.

Way back when I started out learning guitar, Teles were my pet hate - I didn't like how they looked, didn't like how they sounded (I thought, not knowing how many songs I love were actually recorded with Telecasters). Fast forward 25 years and I love almost everything about them, including how they look, and it's the type of guitar I find myself playing the most.

This is so odd, I'm going through the same haha. I ignored them at first completely. Hated twangy sound I thought. But as you said studying music of my preference... Enjoy playing it!

I think the Tele is the most transparent of the big 3 (or 4) guitars- in that I think the sound of your hands comes through more honestly.

Imagine this was Leo Fender’s very first guitar design. How do you get it this right the first time out? If you know how to use that one volume knob and one tone knob there is absolutely nothing you can’t do with it. Teles are magic. If anyone thinks teles can’t be heavy just know the first two Zeppelin albums. Jimmy Page almost exclusively played a tele.

More amazing than that it was the first solid body electric guitar and as if that alone isn’t enough Leo Fender couldn’t even play a guitar! HOW HE GOT IT SO RIGHT god only knows? But thank god he did and even now over 70 years on with all the great Guitar tech and Luther’s we have today nobody has surpassed his original Telecaster!

AGREED. I have a bunch of guitars in my collection, but when I am writing, working new riffs where I am still searching for the tone that fits, I always reach for my Tele. Although it is not Fender, but a custom made one with a solid Flame Maple body made for me as payment for shooting photos for my friend’s band. Shoutout A.J. Howard !!!! Big Yeah !!! His day job is a wood shop teacher at a high school. His students’ senior project every year - build a guitar from scratch. When they build the neck they run to their math teachers, “I found a real use for trigonometry!”

This video is one of the best attempts to explain that "something" that the Tele provides. Thank you for making it. That color is fantastic, and in the hands of a competent player, they sound great. I've been subscribed for a long time, and I think you could probably make a first act guitar sound good, but even in spite of that, there is something specific to a Tele player. It's so hard to explain why a Tele just is a little different and why we love it so, but I'm glad to see a great player like yourself get hooked up with a sick instrument! Enjoy that. Also, I have to ask- did you do the Grolsch bottle trick for the strap locks? I have a candy apple red tele with those same strap locks. (*cough* that I pulled off a Grolsch bottle *cough*) Great video as always!

I love the tones you're getting out of your axe's and amps. Great video and talk about the Telecaster. It seems, historically, that the Tele is always an afterthought to the Strat and other guitars. But after a guitar player reaches a point in their practice the Tele catches their curiosity and once they start playing one they realize how special it is and how wrong they were with their preconceived thoughts about the Tele. I've owned my American Standard Tele since 1995, midnight wine finish. I've had various other guitars over the years , they've come and gone, But my tele is still with me and will be until I'm gone from this earth.

Since relearning to play guitar a couple of years ago I decided to go with the Telecaster due to its simplicity and I feel I made the right decision, a stock Squier Affinity Telecaster that I've since modded with upgraded pickups, electronics and neck to what is now my go to guitar that's a pleasure to play!... 🤘😊

In the 80s, Teles weren't even "on the radar" for anything other than old-school country music. I had a different opinion of them after seeing THAT clip of "Dazed & Confused", but everyone else would look at you as if you had two heads if you wanted to use one instead of some sort of so-called "super-strat". Now that I've started playing again, it's so good to see they're finally getting the respect & recognition they've always deserved.

I got my first Tele this year.....custom shop 1960......amazing! Wish I tried one sooner. I was always an LP guy, but the Tele rocks and never goes out of tune. Great playing Ross!

@@RossCampbellGuitarist if you are ever in Florida my family welcomes you for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or just a day at Rainbow River State Park (look it up) i lived in Europe for 5 years, 3 in Germany and 2 in Holland for Studies. You should be writing music for motion pictures movies if you are not already. do you have any produced music cd's? if so, i would like to purchase one. You have what it takes to be a Big Name in my honest opinion. i have been playing for 40 years and know the real deal when i hear it. Keep it up 😇😇😇

I've been a strat guy for 20 years but always wanted a good tele. Went through a few cheaper ones but was never really satisfied. I needed the belly cut, at least. This video made me want that exact same American Professional II so bad I couldn't stand it, so I went to buy one. But hanging next to it at the store was an American Ultra in Texas Tea. It was love at first sight. It's my new main guitar while my strat is awaiting a refret.

It’s called an ‘ashtray’ bridge because they used to have a removable cover, which was often removed and used as an ashtray 😉

The Telecaster was the 1st guitar I was presented to. A cousin of mine made a tour, in 78/79 in the USA and brought to Brazil, a Telecaster and a Fender Princeton Reverb. I'll never forget the sound and the smell of this pair. Having many Teles in the past years, now I built my own, using a Tagima's string through body (brazilian copy), an unknown brand bridge pickup (but hotter!), a neck pickup that I built from el cheapo strat neck pickup, replacing the polepieces with Alnico V, three position switch, 250K pots and a Mighty Mite neck. The bridge I salvaged from a old Tele with separated saddles, that gives me more intonation resources. Almost forgot, Gotoh tuners. There's no fancy colour, there is scratches, bumps, defects here and there, but I love it.

Well, for me LP's abundance of knobs is great advantage, because I can have two specific tones ready at all times with fast switching (usually full power bridge and rolled down volume neck). And while all you said is correct, for some reason I love that "springy" sound of floating strat tremolo, especially when played with heavy strumming in Hendrix/Frusciante style. And as for bridge pickup, tele is better, but strat does the job too and for gainy stuff LP's humbucker outshines both anyway. So yeah. Good thing that we don't have to choose just one guitar. But if I get stuck on desert island, I'll be happy with any guitar I can have there.

Agree with all you said. I have 2 Teles, a 93 Mexican with Fender Noiseless pickups and 2013 Squier CV Butterscotch Blonde. Also have a 1992 Fender HM Strat HSH with Floyd Pro. All 3 my most versatile guitars but.... none go far enough in either direction. 2006 Les Paul Custom and 1993 Studio ebony board on one side and 1994 Strat Plus and 2020 White Player Strat on the other which I do some chord vibrato with. Love the 4 knob setup on Gibsons and even use the middle setting alot along with loud bridge, quiter neck philosophy. Love all of them though. 🎸

i recently put a humbucker pu in the neckposition on my Tele.....and wow....that really covers everything a guitar needs......apart from that it looks just like your white one....:-)

I agree with a Telecaster being soo awesome and I agree with the sentiment about the single coil Tele bridge pickups working much better than average. I'm a PAF Les Paul guy but I love Telecasters too. If I couldn't take a Lester with scatter wound PAFs to a deserted island It would have to be a Telecaster with a Humbucker bridge,..PAFs. Love your channel !!!

I’m with ya, Mate, 100%. I’m a bass player. I wanted to learn slide. I first tried an Epiphone 339, traded it back for a LP. There wasn’t enough travel in the saddles to get the intonation right after retuning for open-D. So, I got a performer Strat. Moving up a few hundred at a time. Easier that way. The Stat was okay, but had to put additional springs on the whammy gizmo that I’d never use and lock down the bridge. I had 5 positions on the switch and three pickups. Cool I guess, but then I looked at a Tele. Three brass saddles, simple switch, VOLUME AND TONE that does not require a degree in electronics and two pickups. ALL I NEEDED and can get most any tone I want. Boss Chorus, Blues Driver and Reverb through a little Tweed Fender tube amp and I’m set. Now all I have to do is learn to play the thing. As a bass player first thing I noticed is you guys don’t have a lot of room to work with, but for the time being I’m just sliding over the top anyway. Quite a few hundred more this time since I went with an American Pro. I’ve got a Rickenbacker and MM Stingray-5 and didn’t want the new Tele to feel out of place and all. The Rich can get a bit snobby at times. Paul McCartney this and Strawberry Fields that. “Hold ya head up,” I said. “Your kind’s been around a lot longer than either of these guys.”

Me my first electric guitar with a used Fender champ. My supported my interest in now called classic rock at 15. Maple neck fretboard Black. I wanted a Les Paul completely out of range. I have bought and sold countless high end guitars of many brands. As for Fenders, many great and very different sounding custom shop experiments and they really sound different. I have come to EXACTLY the same conclusion for the same reasons as you and come full circle. My expensive custom shop Tele’s lol became “deep relics” quickly despite the cost. The new Pro II I think has reached a sweet spot in all ways. On a strat I only use the bridge pickup and had a completely custom one built. Combination of new and old plus a tele back loading bridge. I don’t use tremolo. I was always buying selling looking for the perfect guitar and right back where I started. The Pro II is the sweet spot to me for Fender. I tried the others from boutique makers. Nice and more modern features features. Less than a Fender reissued Custom shop but expensive. I the 80’s added a new Fender Custom Shop every year. But had to sell all for financial reasons and regretted it. I am glad to hear you confirm my belief the Pro II tele is the best all factors considered. I actually prefer high thin frets maple neck natural finish.

I’ve always loved them - in the 70s because most of my contemporary guitarist friends thought they were ugly, basic guitars for heehaws and I was a contrarian teenager - and now because I’ve been proved correct - and everyone loves a ‘I told you so’ self righteous 61 year old man - as we all know.

My first guitar was a telecaster. It was a 2004 squier telecaster standard series and it's still with me today got some mods to it Hipshot Locking Tuners, stainless steel saddles, new electronics and lambertones Blondies pickups, I also have a fender strat amer. Ultra and even it's my go to I always keep coming back to the Tele, although I do struggle with the pickup height at time

I will be getting the Fender Pro ll. Telecaster in a few weeks. In Dark Knight color. That 1 you have is Beautiful. I also have a Michael Kelly Telecaster as well with Seymour Duncans in it. But it's is a way different sounding guitar. Then just a Standard Tele. But I love it. Can't wait to get my new Pro ll. Enjoy your new Tele my friend.

I go so much back and forth on strat v tele. When I choose my tele I’m just like dang this thing sounds amazing. To me teles have an extra gear and presence for “big” song parts that are never harsh if you EQ right. A strat is AMAZING but lacks that next level usually in my experience. A strat always sits perfectly in the mix and is never offensive. A tele you have to be more purposeful what you play because if you play something that doesn’t work everyone will see it.

Hi Ross from a fellow Scot - an old yin though! Think the “ashtray” moniker comes from the early days when there was a cover over the bridge pickup. It looked good but obviously got in the way so almost all players would take it off and it became jokingly referred to as the ashtray since it wasn’t much good for anything else! I worked in the industry for a number of years (not as a player), and I was lucky enough to work in various capacities with a lot of top players including lots of guitarists. For what it’s worth, I think you’re a very talented player and I wish you every success in your career.

Also they called it an ashtray because many propionate players would discard it or more often then not it was used as an ashtray and was deemed useless for most players. The tray they use on American Pro Telecasters is very small and it does not impede the playing of the guitarist.

I have had comments that the removed ash tray cover on a tele does not look right . My answer to that is real hot rods do not have a hood .

Great video, it's amazing how different players are and it's a good thing but for me, one tone control? I do the Gary Moore move as in still got the blues where he changes from tone down on the neck pup over to the bridge on full treble,, it's like the guitar clears it's throat and screams out,,, I guess a bypass mini toggle switch that takes the output straight to the jack could do the same on a tele.

Excellent playing man, wish I had half your skills. I totally agree with everything you said. I have a Fender American Tele and that’s it, it’s the only guitar I personally need. Just wish it was that easy finding the perfect amp and pedals. I’m happy with the setup I have right now but it sure took a lot of trial and error to get there. Buy a pedal, sell that pedal only to buy that same pedal 3 months later. It’s crazy but it’s all part of the fun of it too so it’s all good. Thanks for posting the video. Take it easy

No doubt the tele is greatest country guitar and a very versatile guitar for rock, blues and jazz. However being foremost a blues, rock player I just can't go past a stratocaster for comfort and playability. In saying that my favourite tone for rock and shredding would definitely have to be my les paul standard, those standard pick ups are just amazing for sustain and crunch. But I love my stratocaster unconditionally. Great playing as always Ross.

I use my strat for jazz and blues gigs and it's really good for that too

I'm with ya Ross. I have a little kit-made tele from Warmoth that I added a Duncan Jerry Donahue bridge pickup and the SD recommended match in the bridge, Callaham electronics and this guitar -- which I probably couldn't get $500 for -- just kicks butt. I love my Strats and Pauls and my Am Pro (version 1) Tele, but the homemade tele is my desert island guitar, no doubt about it.

yes ! very good to mention Ted Greene about telecaster . First, this guy is the number one guitar GEEK/genius . He has got so many Telecaster 1952 that when fender what to make the 52 reissue they call him ! HIs only album is a wonderful. When we spok of jazz and telecaster, his name came first. Follow by Ed bikert ( excellent) and Julian Lage this days ( and a lot more)

Mental conundrum. "My go-to is a Strat, but if I was on a desert island (with solar power to run the amp) I'd want a tele." Makes my brain hurt to think of that. But since you are not--and we are not--I'm glad to hear you play anything with strings. You Rock! Stay Well.

My go to is MY strat. Not just any stratocaster ;) Maybe one day I'll find a tele that I love more than my CS strat

Yes, nice playing - it's great for the desert island. But the ancient "Selector switch" is just tight-close the volume knob...guitarists are very conservative so Fender keeps it there. LP has a much better placement when you want to switch easily during playing. Anyway I still play all of them.

Great intro and playing Dude, Tele's keep it simple, just work, I like a P90 in the neck though, especially my Indy Band, middle position between the 2 great for rhythm, Strats, mine has a Humbucker in the Bridge and just a volume and tone. To test your theory, buy a Tele with the strings top loaded, some say they feel and hear a difference, tbh, I have had both, pups seem to make a bigger difference to my rocked out ears.

I love teles in looks and sound, the only thing I'm not a fan off (other than the heel joint) is the neck. If I could have a tele with the playability of a Charvel, that would immediately become one of my favorites ever.

@Luke I'm aware of the ultra, but for what they are i would definitely prefer an Ibanez Talman which has a full 12" instead of compound radius. I would think that most people that would even bother trying it have some fender experience, after playing a fender, everything feels good to me, so idk. I would prefer something even flatter, like 16" or even 20" (i started with classical guitar so I'm super used to it)

The "ashtray" bridge was called that because it originally came with a chrome cover. Players wanted access to pick closer to the bridge, so they'd always take the cover off and...use it as an ashtray. It even looked like an ashtray when flipped over, and worked quite well as one. I'm surprised Fender doesn't still ship the cover with these higher-end Teles.

@@iancurrie8844 I've seen unboxing of custom Teles on Andertons channel and they never show the tray. Is it in the case? Because it's not mounted to the guitar that I've ever seen.
