The misalignment of the topline of loafers shoes is a big problem for many who are new to Shoemaking. The problem can stem from the shoe patterns, the heel construction or even the insoles. In this Shoemaking tutorial, I point out several ways of identifying the cause of the problem and also give hints on how to deal with them.

I noticed one more reason of disordered topline and this is the insole you put inside. If you wear your loafers without insoles you can notice that the topline goes crazy. I started to add insoles 3-4mm eva glued on thin 1mm leather and this helped.

You are absolutely correct. Doing that addresses some of the things mentioned here. It adds a little bit of height to the heel such that if there was some deficiency in that area, that will be corrected. Secondly, raising the sock liner increases the overall volume of the content of the shoe helping the feet to fit more snuggly into the shoe as the last would. If you consistently notice this with your last, then make sure you measure the instep and waist girths of the customer and factor those into the insoles construction in the first place.

I really enjoy your videos. It has been very helpful in my shoemaking journey. I have a question though: should we also construct our own back stays when we are making a pair of derby or oxford? Or should we stick with the market size of back stays we have? Since you mentioned that the back stay should extended to help maintain the top line of loafers. Does this apply to other shoes like derby/ oxford?

You will always get better results if you construct your own back stay. I have a video that shows how to use an insole fiber board to construct a back stay. Do check that out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PtS3wTQh44k.htmlsi=jfpltgD-eid6C_FL But to answer your question directly, while you can get away with using the market back stay for say Oxfords and Derbys I totally don't recommend them for loafers.
