in Switzerland everybody keeps their cars quite pristine it's rare to see a bumper sticker except for this one what's up with the random CH on the back of everybody's car and what does CH even mean well CH stands for cheese and it's on the back of everybody's car because everybody loves cheese Case Closed not really as English speakers we call Switzerland Switzerland but that's not its actual name it's not Sweden either Switzerland has four official languages each of these different languages has their own name for the country in German it's
I can't read French and I can't read Italian or the romanish either I don't even know how to say those names but in English these basically all translate to the Swiss Confederation having four official names is a little bit of a problem like if you're the US you just put the United States of America on everything and it's fine but if you go on the Swiss National website you see all four names and it's like this on official documents as well it's a little bit clumsy but it works however we have another problem here sometimes you want to abbreviate your name instead of writing out the whole name on everything like the United States of America uses their acronym the USA But if you have four languages each with their own name putting all four acronyms up on everything is a little bit ridiculous of course maybe you could just use one of the names like maybe the German acronym but then the French would get their feelings hurt and that's not good and there's no way that the Germans are going to let the French represent the country so the French names not gonna happen no one cares what the Italians think and everybody forgot about the Roman finish so what do you do really the country needs a neutral name one that doesn't favor one language over the others they could use the English name this Swiss Confederation sounds pretty good right but uh they didn't instead they chose the Latin Confederate the first word Confederation refers to the 26 cantons all being bound together and the second word helvetica comes from a tribe that lived here before the Romans you can find the word helvetica on some Coins Stamps and things like that however the Confederation is actually not an official name for Switzerland Switzerland only has four names but the CH is the official acronym for Switzerland which is just kind of interesting while in Switzerland you will see this CH on everything from products to websites and of course these ugly bumper stickers what's up with the CH bumper stickers well it's all part of a treaty called the 1906 68 Vienna convention on road traffic this is a set of traffic regulations that a whole bunch of countries including Switzerland agreed to the idea was to kind of unify some traffic rules across the board now according to these regulations a car traveling outside of its country needs to have the abbreviation for the country or country code put on the back of the car nowadays most countries include that country code on their license plate the Swiss license plate just has the Swiss National coat of arms followed by the abbreviation for the Canton where the car is registered then you have the license plate number and the Canton Coat of Arms This is sort of like your state flag there is no CH on the license plate because Switzerland does not have the CH on their license plate they're required to put that giant white CH on the back of their cars all the Europeans watching this are thinking what in the world everybody knows this everybody's knowing this forever but the US and Canada are not part of this treaty and we do not put our country code on the back of our cars living in the U.S I've seen these stickers before but they're just used as like a souvenir to show all the cool places you've been to I never thought that it would be like a requirement for you to put this ugly bumper sticker on your car it's just kind of funny it's also kind of funny that this treaty came into effect in 1977 meaning Switzerland has been refusing to put the CH on their license plates for 46 years which is the swissest thing ever they're the most stubborn people on Earth and I've never been so proud of Switzerland in my life I think that's awesome thank you for watching have a good one
