Why Theoden Appeals to Gen Z

In comparison to our ancestors, we are but meek imitations. In relation to the titans that came before us, we are measly shadows. It will require everything in our power to reach half the heights of our forefathers. These sentiments were often proclaimed by Theoden, king of Rohan, throughout the tale of The Lord of the Rings. He lamented his own lack of greatness when measured against the success and prowess of those from which he descended, and made it his final ambition to become worthy of being mentioned in the same breath. Though I grew up reading and watching Lord of the Rings, my favorite character often changed as I aged. Now, I have decided it is none other than Theoden. I yearned to discover why this was so, and upon further reflection, I believe I have discovered the foremost reason. As a member of Generation Z, I have found that Theoden, King of Rohan and martyr of the Battle of Pelennor Fields, represents and echoes the sentiments of our generation. So, why does Theoden appeal to Gen Z? Let’s explore…

Theoden was always my favorite character. He goes against "good' narrative convention in the sense that he can only react to forces and circumstances beyond his control, but that's the whole point of his character - he has only one choice - to rise to his duty, or not, and he rises to it magnificently.
@joyfulyes

In the words of Gandalf, all we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us. This is a major theme in Tolkien -- so much depends on the choices of folk who find themselves caught up in circumstances bigger than they are. I believe this perspective has roots in his experience of the trenches of WWI.

Theoden is unique in that he is not some hero of prophecy, he's not the White Wizard, he's not the long lost King come back to save the world, by all rights he should be like Denethor, "the lesser son of greater sires", and yet he's not. He rises to his duty because it's the right thing to do, and he does it knowing full well it means his demise. He's not the only character that does this, but he's the one that truly embodied what a King should be in dark times, and it's the example I look to the most right now

My reason for loving Théoden King is much more personal. He clearly struggles with issues of self-esteem & Gríma is a manipulative abuser that, through Saruman, breaks Théoden down & leaves him a shell of his former self. I also have to wrestle with loud thoughts of not being good enough, & I've also survived such an abuser. The fact that, after Gandalf saves him, Théoden rises through & above his demons & struggles & makes a hero of himself is an inspiration to me, & I'm sure many others feel the same way.

As a 98 born Gen Z, I grew up in a similar situation; I've long cut my abusive father & those in my family that sided with him outta my life, & while it seems like it's pretty hopeless right now, I'm still working on healing from it, & I'm even working on some projects that'll hopefully prove to be achievements comparable to those of our ancestors too.

The book chapter of the Ride of the Rohirrim makes me tear up every time. that moment when the gate is splintered in a blinding flash and Theoden goes from slumped in the saddle to upright and shouts "Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! @@titolovely8237gen z is paradoxical by matter of involuntary circumstance. They know of the triumph and the knowledge of the past, the great and terrible and other things which have long been cast. Yet despite that, knowledge is suffering. For Gen Z knows both too much and too little with little way to parse through said wisdoms, to take the bad and the good and make do with what they have. They are born into a world of conflict, polarization, and impersonalization. A time of war not amidst nations, but conflict so petty and between peoples who identify with one side or another. I cast no judgement, but in effect, I’ve seen innumerable of those people burn out, crash, and fall when they fight. For every outspoken voice one of them makes, innumerable others cry out to denounce them, not even the incoherent rambling which got drowned out in the noise, but painfully, agonizingly readable, disconnected from time or space. Like people innumerable they wish to have what they do not, to have a world they wish, except they are also highly fragmented, broken apart by barriers of thought, barriers of mind, and barriers of place and time. In a way it is not just being demoralized, it is also that they are disorganized, that they are also disincentivized for word travels at the speed of 5 seconds sharp on the interconnected net I send this to you through.

Gen X'er here and it makes me happy to know that people your age are still learning these stories. King Theoden is a great example of what JP calls willingly embracing your sacrifice. Especially after one has been living in black pill Hell as he was under Saruman's influence. Slowly poison dripping his mind with the repeating message "abandon all hope". But as close as his inner flame was to going out, it had not yet. Such an example of a man for our time. You'd probably agree, but I think that one of the other greatest heroes from LOTR for our time is Sam. His reverie on the slope of Mount Doom, both book and movie. The way he could stand in the darkest, most dangerous and hopeless place in the world where it seems like all is lost and yet somehow, his faith is never broken. Even though it seems like a sure thing that the world is ending, he finds it in him to get back up and take another step forward.

Sam could do it because he was simple, and that's not an insult. He trusted his master, Frodo, totally. He couldn't have carried the ring, he never would have volunteered for it, but since Frodo did, he followed him. He was able to believe in their triumph over the enemy because he believed in Frodo, he didn't care for battles and hopelessness, because his master wouldn't fail. That's why, for me, the betrayal and sadness in Sam portrayed in the movies when Frodo refuses to throw the ring into Mt. Doom hits so deep. He's gone this whole journey, able to make jokes and be hopeful because he never doubted Frodo, but at the last moment his everlasting hope was slashed. Even Samwise the brave was brought low.

Well, minimally, if the left says to do it, do the opposite. Most "progress" in the last 50 years has been absurdly negative in effect. So ask "who is it progress for?" and "What is it progress to?" Asking those questions reveals most of the errors that led us to where we are.

This is what Sauron represents, strength through tiranny from a hidden realm (the digital world). One can experience that "fake matrix-like" world with the use of virtual reality. This is the Ring of Power, a tool one can wield to get away from the reality we live in and peek into the world of 'beyond'. Im going to be blunt and direct - return to seeking God, return to pursuing the truth, and above all letting go/offering up your life - the greatest act of love - to love, to God. Why would someone hate love, if not to side with the enemy? As we see here with Theoden, we have little say in the matter of whst we do in the end of it all - either we forsake our duty to love, or rise to it. Be a slave to evil, or a servant to Good.

What are conservatives going to do about massive wealth inequality, the inaffordability of the essentials of living, amd crippling medical and educational debt? More privatisation, more subsidies and tax breaks for the richest and most powerful people on the planet? More scapegoating of marginalised groups for the problems caused by capitalist greed and government policy? That won't fix anything. I can speak for my own organization, a local Democratic Party organization in a fairly red county - we and others are starving for new blood and ideas - and we honestly need younger folks with experience and knowledge of the digital world. For example, I recently entrusted a significant portion of our digital efforts to a recent college grad. He’s now doing to be a delegate at the national convention. If there's one thing that we Millennials have in common with Gen Z, it's that many of us became adults at a time when things were stacked against us. In the U.S., the American dream has slowly been falling out of reach, and our country's leadership has become too proud and too privileged. In other parts of the world, like Japan and South Korea, the birthrate has fallen well-below what is required for demographic replacement, which will inevitably lead to a slow crumbling of their economy and infrastructure over the years. In the third world, more and more corruption and wars have been taking place, painting a grim future for the young in those countries. All this, while climate change is an ever-looming threat that simply can not be contained with the way things are running in post-capitalistic societies. It almost seems like there is a global plague eating at the very soul of humanity. I'm not sure how much hope I have in this world's current leadership to make the best choices for the future. It will ultimately be left to future leaders to correct the mistakes of our past and current ones. I only pray that they will be the right ones, though I fear that things will only continue to get worse over the coming years before they get any better.

Being European If i may reply here by saying that's also the case for western Europe. Britain, France, Germany, Sweden etc. Weak and corrupt leaders have allowed this darkness and corruption into our lands. The few that promote our cultures, languages, heritage and rights of ethnic Europeans are few. Whoever controls the economy also controls the birthrate, salary, jobs, opportunities and thus controls the people. I would not like to see the same for America. We've spent 70 years or so with the exact same opinions and thought processes being well documented and broadcasted for the world to see. People are bound to stop and realize that teenagers are anti-social and edgy, that every generation believes the world will end in their time (y2 and 2012), that every generation believes the older ones are hostile and misguided, and that the newer generation is foolish and weaker than them.

The thing about Theoden was that the Battle of Pelennor fields was essentially Armageddon for the peoples of Middle-Earth. Theoden knows just about everything that's going on with the War. He knows that the chance that can destroy Sauron can also restore him to full power. BUT...the stakes are "Total Ruin" or "The End of Evil." Faced with that, there's nothing futile about giving 110% against impossible odds because the potential gain is literally Everything. However he dies, he fought to save the entire world. Even his ancestors couldn't claim that honor.

Closest would be the Rohirrim founding father Eorlas, who pledged alliance with Gondor and his horse lords partook in destroying Sauron's forces in the War of the Last Alliance. As thanks, the Kings of Gondor had given his people the lands of Rohan to live in and inhabit. Afterwards, another term for the people of Rohan is Eorlingas, Sons of Eorl, and I think Theoden lived up to and maybe even surpassed mighty Eorlas.
@Theomite

@@supernautacus If he had been there for the March on the Black Gates, it's likely Sauron wouldn't have even opened them. Sauron knew that he had an advantage when Aragorn rode up with the Gondorians. But if both Aragorn and Theoden had been there, with the cavalry (or what was left of it) present? Sauron would've gone radio silent because he would've known that if this army at his front door routed 75% of his forces, then the remaining 25% wouldn't have stood a chance. Sauron was also losing ground in Erebor and Mirkwood (possibly Lothlorien too) because of the mutual resistance by the Dwarves and Elves. He might've said "Fuck it, let them stand out there for years if they want, I'll regroup in a decade or so." So no, Frodo and Sam likely wouldn't have succeeded unless the Orcs assembled at the gates to prepare for a battle that would ultimately not come.

An excellent piece, young sir. I did not expect that I would be left feeling great empathy and fellow feeling for those much younger than myself. I have spent sixty odd years seeing the world my fathers and grandfathers died for and built be diminished and their glories squandered by self-serving, evil-minded, men at the pinnacle of the pyramid of power. Nearly everyone I have ever known, trusted and loved is dead - as Elrond said, my list of allies grows thin! Certain things, shiny, ephemeral, things, have come into being that distracted far too many of us from what was really going on. And I do fear, in that way of older men whose power is nigh on spent, that there is no way to throw back the dark veil that is eclipsing all that has been built. But hearing that some of those who still have vitality in their limbs and spirits have a mind to resist, solely because it is a call of duty to their civilisation that they hear ... that gives me hope.

The LotR Movies are quite literally the stories that stuck with me, even though I was too young to understand why. I love the poetic way in which Tolkien describes the moment where Théoden's story arc concludes and he finally lives up to the fame of his forefathers: "Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, or the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them." The shadows of Mordor are driven back just as Théoden steps out from the shadow of his ancestors, shining like the sun, restoring colour to a bleak world and entering the realm of myths and gods. Théoden here is no longer a weak, bent old man, but a mighty warrior-king who has overcome all of his own struggles to become a living legend that will inspire countless future generations to greatness in turn.

Thank you for this, my young friend. I’m an 82 child. Things were indeed kinder before technology made us aware of everything and everyone everywhere. Fear didn’t rule and insist on our cowering participation at every turn. Your video gives me hope. We are all so partitioned off from one another, this video shows me we see the same broken realities. The same poisoned wrongness. That awareness breathes hope. We are in a time of an awakening. People ARE realizing this is NOT the world they want to live in. There will be a time soon where we must be as Theoden and choose courage, even amidst fear. Choose to be kind, even to the unkind. Question what the Grima Wormtounges spew (there are a lot of those guys these day). We will find that courage and forge new better realities. Such battles begin with us making a simple choice. Reject the false reality, where we are told to hate each other, and be kind and open. Bring laughter and light and awareness. These things chase the dark. We can choose to embody light. To be strong. To be good. And I believe we will. My unconditional love to you all.

I used to think that the different kings in this series were all the same, stubborn and blind, just getting in the way of what needs to be done, I'm older now and really admire Theoden, I now understand exactly why he was so hesitant to face death, but time after time he proves himself courageous, striving to be better than he believes himself to be, he just feels so real compared to the other characters of the story, I recall the scene where they're all standing in the water at Isengard talking down Saruman, and just thinking that despite his great kingly status, he was the odd one out, like he was a stranger witnessing a small part of what these legendary heroes have been up to this whole time...

You cannot be heroic without dark times and struggle, it's the great deeds done in those dark times that lead to good times. We live in dark times, it's time to choose if you will be a great man or a weak man, just like Theoden chose to be a great man despite his own weakness and doubt. I don't think it's necessary to achieve heroic feats to be a great man, just like Tolkien said, it's the ordinary deeds or ordinary folk that can sometimes make the most difference. Remember that even Fatty Bolger had a part in saving Middle Earth.

I have been feeling this way about Theoden for a few years now. The line by Tony Soprano in the first episode of the Sopranos “I came in at the end. The best is over.” Is also another sentence I constantly remember. Perhaps it was different, it can be great again, we must make it not so. It is in ourselves to do so. One of the generations in ages to be poorer than their parents and grandparents. In many ways, we are at risk of more addiction, health issues, less opportunities, sexual and social issues etc. We probably have more in common with the silent generation in my opinion. In an ever changing world that is alien to the previous world. However, there is hope. Even if there is darkness, light will come. We must all try to stay in the light and have faith, work hard and keep going. God bless.

Theodén and Boromir are quite my favourite characters. They are both tragic, yet died heroic. Many people say that The Two Towers is their "least favourite" movie of the three, but that's not the case for me, I loved the second movie so much because I simply loved the entire Rohan plotline, the healing of Theodén, the tragic of his only son's death and the display of courage in hopeless times during the Battle of Helms Deep (especially since his courage falters first, but Aragorn is able to ignite it again). Bernard Hill played Theodén magnificently, so I was really sad to hear of his passing a few months ago. May he rest in peace.

Great vid on a character that I feel is often overlooked. I often feel the same kind of dread that the world is less than it was before with the passage of each generation. Less kind, less fair. Used to be that when you had kids you banked up assets to leave behind in the hopes that your children would be better off than you were. Now all we leave behind is debt. With each generation being smaller than the last, the old now scalp the young to get by, and corporate greed soaks up the rest. I worry that Sam's dream, of fulfillment in home and family, is an incredibly difficult achievement anymore. I feel that if Sam's dream was more realistic for young folks then perhaps Theoden's fatalistic journey would hold less appeal. It is comforting to know that there are young people with the desire to lead that charge, because sometimes that is what is necessary to affect change in the world. So, thanks for that. But remember, as Gandalf said, it is the small deeds of everyday folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Being kind and considerate in your day to day life brings more light to the world than you can imagine. Thanks for the video, it was well written and thought out. Hang in there genZ

This was a great analysis of our tragic hero king who lost all hope (in the depths of ensorcellment, itself an appropriate analogy) but found his strength again to face the evils and challenges of his day and rise to the call. The only thing I would add are some book refrences that emphasize just how great Theoden was in that moment when he chose to stand against the darkness. The movies do the story justice in many ways, but as Theoden King gathers his strength and throws himself into this impossible task the text makes it explicit that he has found his moment of greatness to match his forefathers , “Fey he seemed, for the battle fury of his fathers ran like new fire through his veins and he was borne upon Snowmane like a god of old, even as Orome the great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young.” And thus in the end Theoden would not ever feel ashamed in the halls of his forefathers. For he stared into that myopic dread. The feeling of hopelessness that nothing he did would matter, could change anything. And he decided to face that darkness and do whatever he could nonetheless. Each and every one of us can make that same choice everyday, to fight our personal demons and the vices we see in our world, and as long as we do not surrender to the darkness our efforts will make us worthy of the legacy we have inherited.

So many people are looking for purpose in life and we live in increasingly heroic times. Battles of the spirit combined with bringing kindness and compassion to our society. What a time to be alive! Stand up heroes, your time has come.

I watched the Two Towers the other day and cried over the end of the West speech he gives. “Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountains, like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the West, behind the hills, into Shadow…”

Fantastic video! I'd never tgought of Theoden in this way before. I feel this a lot, that the men that came before me were greater, and I am weak and undisciplined by comparison. But I know I have the potential to be great, and that I am not so weak as I believe. Before the closesr example I had was Rengoku, who, strong as he was, wasnt stront enough. Yet he did not give up. He gave everything he had and saved many lives. Despite not being the strongest, his impact shaped the rest of the show. Theoden is a more human example, with Rengoku being the height I wish to reach, as I feel that to fall in a battle, whether metaphorical or literal, is my destiny.

Movie Theoden is a man who never feels he is enough, a man who watches what could be the end of his people. Book Theoden is a man of the legends, he states that he is but a pale shadow of those that came before, but he rides, head hell high, into the teeth of danger, never a thought to not. Both are wonderful, but movie Theoden does such a good job of showing the doubt and fear that such a time creates, and how hard it can be to stand against it.

Great video man, Theoden is my favorite LOTR character. Keep it up. If there’s any advice I would give, It would be that your narration is clear and well written, but maybe a bit slow paced and monotone. It is kinda easy to zone out for someone with ADHD. Not saying you should do stupid exaggerations or anything, maybe just speed up the reading slightly and add some inflection.

Born in '82 (Gen Xennial). I couldn't have put this better, myself. And I *really* couldn't: I've defended my generation to previous ones by asking them to consider soberly and earnestly the world we inherited. Given so much hope in formative years, and so little to work with as we came of age. I've felt very lied to. But I likewise didn't consider that the generation after mine had even less hope on which to build. It gives me so much more empathy. *You* are the something good lingering in this world. And you are worth fighting for.

Rest in peace Bernard Hill. As a young kid who loved the films - and then a young adult who read the books - King Theoden's death made me cry twice. Two very different times, through two different mediums, for different reasons based on how each was depicted. Goated character

Tolkien would be proud of this. Having be analyzed like this while still inspiring them is invaluable to a writer.

I am a millennial. I have struggled and currently struggle. Feelings of loneliness. Of not being able to make my family proud. That I won't be able to start a family of my own. That I won't lose the weight. That I am an addict to the dopamine hits that plague our world. The illness of our age. But when I think of Theodan King, or historical rulers that strove to recapture the past, I think differently. We cannot turn back the clock. We cannot recapture old glory. But we can strive to make our own glory. We have everything we need to make our future better than the past. It will require focus, perseverance, humility, love, self-control and an almost insurmountable level of work. But we can do it.
