Maangchi is the godmother of popularizing Korean food online. She's been chugging on RU-vid for like over 15 years. She's one of the OG gastro-diplomats, lol.

I love Korean food! I'm going to Korea again this year! Love K-Town in NYC and the growing Korean hot spots in Orlando

Channels like Eat Your Kimchi and the wave of internet Mukbangs I'm sure also made a huge impact as well. It's not all stinky or super spicy food...it's fatty, heart warming food (aka soul food) which speaks to all people. And the idea of food meant to be shared in a group means that people go in a gathering doesn't hurt!

Very interesting! One more thing: Psy. Not kidding. He opened the door to America's embrace of K-Pop, spawning a generation of Americans who want to learn more about Korean culture than just music (including me!).

Let’s not forget that maany Chinese restaurants in America are owned by Koreans. Like, a ton.

The thing I don’t understand is though…how did a country with super advanced industries such as Semiconductor, Samsung, Hyundai decide it’s focus should be K-pop 😅

Because they realized that by growing the Korean "brand" it will lead to increased revenue across all sectors.

Because K-pop and other culture products are much cheaper to produce and reproduce and doesn't require billions of won in R&D or resource logistics. It's also much easier to sell 1 million cinema tickets in a year for a single movie than it is to sell 1 million units of a single car in a year.
