While in DC in August, Adam stopped by one of his FAVORITE places: the National Air and Space Museum, and specifically its Restoration Hangar, where he checks out a screen-used X-wing. What is a prop from STARS WARS -- and science fiction in general -- doing in this particular Smithsonian? Dr. Margaret Weitekamp, Curator and Department Chair of the Space History Department, explains.

I have absolutely no problem with a fictional X-Wing being in the Smithsonian. The USS Enterprise has been there for years. My only complaint is that it's not Luke Skywalker's "T-65" from the original trilogy which is much more iconic.
@_WillCAD_
@_WillCAD_ 2 года назад
Agreed, but I wonder if they made a full-size T-65 for any of the modern films? I'm sure the OT mock-ups are either long gone, sitting in private collections, or sitting in a Lucasfilm lobby somewhere.

I would argue that props from the Disney movies do not inspire imagination. They do quite the opposite. When I see the T-70, I think of the stupid "your mama" joke. I'd be more excited about a Galactica Mk V than any Star Wars prop at this point.

I always wished Star Wars ships had more aurebesh markings. Like the classic "No Step" markings many fighters had on their wings (as well as the walking area markings). Sure, Star Wars ships are made of materials far more advanced than what we have or whatever, but it'd be neat to have more "practical" markings to make everything feel more real. Like it has history, and was developed from something before, and like there's a history of space combat that involved a process of learning and logistics. Star Wars has always been so great at weathering and industrial-looking design, but I've always felt the markings were lacking.

Why is there an X-Wing Fighter from Star Wars in the Smithsonian: Air and Space Museum? Well, here's a quote from Albert Einstein: "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere. Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions. The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination. I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world. The gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge. I very rarely think in words at all. A thought comes, and I may try to express it in words afterwards. I never made one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking. Reality is merely an illusion albeit a very persistent one." And in my opinion, Science Fiction/Mythology/Fantasy is responsible for the majority of Scientific Facts and Discoveries.

I saw it once when I was just 2 years old (the story being that I was the first in the group to recognize it and point it out) and again just a few years ago when they had it down by the gift shop. I hear it got a great restoration recently and has been moved again, and I'm hoping to go see it. And maybe this X-Wing will still also be there! I had forgotten that until you mentioned it. When the Air & Space Museum first opened in the 70's, there was a small section devoted to air and space vehicles in science fiction. The original Enterprise model hung over the entrance to the area (this was before it was moved to the museum store area).
@kirkwagner461

@@christalbot210 I recall reading a story about it years after it first appeared, explaining that it had been hung pretty much as it had come to them from the studio. They displayed it for a few years, then pulled it down for a restoration, as it had started showing its age. When they completed that is when, I think, they moved it to the museum store.

Yes, that is what more people will have a problem with than IF this belongs in a real museum. But i guess they would not give away the OT X-Wings if they have actually build any in full size because those are still needed for shooting new Star Wars footage, fat chance that anybody is going to touch the Sequel stuff again anytime soon. They are even making a tie-in Disney+ Show to Rogue One "Andor", and 20 other things but nothing that even remotely ties in to the Sequels or First Order timeframe. They got the message, they are steering clear of it.
