The 406 holds a special place in my heart. My grandpa (dad's father) was a lifelong Peugeot driver; not into automotive, but Peugeot was his brand of choice for traveling from A to B. The last car he had was a 406 sedan in burgundy, which I remember standing on the old driveway for some years after he had passed away in 1999. I was barely two years old when he died, so I've never really known him. I've never driven a 406 myself, but this video really makes me want to try one, just so I can experience what Grandpa's last drive was like. To hear it's actually really good makes me feel weirdly happy. Thank you, James. Hope you have a great time of day, whenever you may read this.

What you've described is most 406s lives, one owner till he/she passes away then goes on to a new owner or unfortunately gets scrapped. I've bought two of 'em under such circumstances. They really are great cars, especially considering what they cost nowadays. Do drive one, or even better buy one if you ever get the chance, you won't regret it

I've been driving a 600 quid 406 estate since 2017 and I don't see myself parting with it anytime soon. It's not rusty, the 1.8 petrol just keeps on working and the car rarely has any problems of any sort. Sure, it's a bit slow but it's a nice thing to drive and what I still can't get over is how quiet and refined it is! Most new cars I've sat in have more tyre noise and interior squeaks!

Been driving a £350 306 GLX Estate with the 2.0 HDi also since 2017. A reliable, quick and very comfortable car that at 187,000 miles is barely run in. My garage likes working on it, as there's less stuff and more room. It is trying to transition from old car to classic, but all classics have to go through that difficult age!

Concerning the Code-Problem: I have a Peugeot 306, quite similar to the 406 when talking about the stereo. If the Radio is from clarion and has a serial-Nr. starting with C700000... there's a simple way to find out its code: 1. Take the 4 last numbers (Example: C70000001234/Here it would be 1234) 2. Add 1 to the first number (1+1 = 2) 3. Add 2 to the second number (2+2 = 4) 4. Add 3 to the third number (3+3 = 6) 5. Add 4 to the fourth number (4+4 = 8) The radio mostly lets you put in only Numbers 1-6. So from each number over 6 you'll need to substract 6. So with my example it would be 2462. Hope this helps :)

I had a 406 Manual sedan in Australia in 1996 and it proved to be a great car, even though performance from the 2.0 litre petrol was fairly ordinary, it was a great touring car with shades of Peugeot's venerable 504 in terms of ride and handling.

I ran 406 2.0 Hdi estates for about 10 years and a lot of miles and I reckon they are the best cars Peugeot have made. They have the ride/comfort balance spot on, very rarely go wrong and are usually easy to fix. They also have the best headlights of any car I have driven and that amounts to about 60-80. I passed my test in 1956 when the Suez crisis was on and driving tests were suspended, as a result you could drive unaccompanied if you had a provisional license - a provision I took full advantage of. I ran hydropnumatic Citroens for many years starting with CX's for around 10 years - they were an eye opener, the XMs for another 10 then the early C5s which I didn't care much for but I now have a couple of the later X7 C5s on springs which I think ride better than the Hydromatics but not as reliable or as easy to repair as the 406s.

Had a 2.2 sport, light blue, 16inch factory alloy rims, one of the few cars i've owned that people commented "thats a nice car". It looked smart, drove nice, did everything i wanted it to do, never let me down. Would "get up & dance" when you put foot down or needed it. If you see a tidy 406 around today still holds its looks 25yrs later compared to new cars. Clean, smart, an edge of understated class. I had one of these new as a company car back in 2000. Nice car except for a couple of flaws. Firstly the rear end liked to let go in the wet. Secondly, it had an intermittent electrical fault, I would return to the car and find it electrically dead. If left for an hour, it would start but all of the screen information would be in French! Sometimes it would cut out going round roundabouts. Peugeot could never find out what the problem was.

@anthony342 Yeah, I know, mate. That was the frustrating thing at the time. "Mechanics" ruined the immobilising electronics, and several things went wrong after that, as well as a number of occasions not starting due to glow plugs being dead. It really knocked his confidence with it and so he bought a new car. It is a shame as it was in perfect condition and had less than 100k on the clock, and if I knew then what I know now about cars, things would've been different. You can always trust a 3rd party mechanic to ruin an old car and a dealer one to scare you with the bill. I've been down that road a few times. If it can't be solved with an OBD or some spanners, it has them stumped. It went to a lad in the end and ended up modded and is now off the road.

I had a facelift 2.0 hdi estate car 2013 to 2015 from new. Initially had some problems with the Gallic electrics but after that it was perfect. Brilliant ride comfort and grip on Michelins. Quiet cruiser at 50+ mpg. 'Puggsie" was a great favourite of mine. The only other car I really liked was a Mondeo Vignale Estate, named 'Mondie' which had very similar characteristics (the diesel in the Ford was based on the 406 engine). Both these car far more reliable than any German car I've had since and also had vastly better ride/roadholding compromise.

Brilliant review and you’re so right, the late 90s was a nadir for great to drive ordinary cars - Peugeot 306/406, Ford Focus mk1 and Mondeo mk1/2, Citroen ZX, Nissan primera, even the Astra G, all drove really well and rewarded on a back road with good ride. None of the modern crossovers come close - Nissan qashqai for example.. just white goods stuff like that. It’s sad…

What a great watch! I used to have a 405 as a company car and loved the handling. I have just done a similar thing, not wanting to put too many miles on my F Type and realising it wouldn’t be too clever through the winter, so went in search of …. An Alfa 156 as I adored my x reg company car back in the day. I found a stunning 2003 pre facelift 1.6 TS Veloce with 42k miles and 17 service stamps in the book with full leather etc etc - I love it and only today a young lad at the garage commented on it. It will be my winter daily and be swapped with my 916 spider in the summer. Life’s too short to drive boring cars! Keep up the good work. PS I had a Brera 3.2 once and hated every minute of it and traded up to an Evora. Sounds familiar!! 😂

The 406 is very rare now and actually so is the 407. I guess as it mainly was fleet buyers like taxi drivers who bought these models they would run them into the ground until they became scrapyard pieces or sold them off for a few hundred quid with 6 months mot left with a ton of advisories. They end up binned by the following owner due to repair costs. The Citroen Xantia had the same fate.

LX had AC GLX added digital climate control, arm rests, rear electric windows, electric mirrors and the oil gauge. You really wouldn't have wanted the manual, the clutch was super heavy, the gearbox was very notchy and you could not shift into first unless completely stopped, which was annoying as often you needed to at low speeds

Probably the last Peugeot with the unbeatable famed ride/handling/steering combination. When they came out the press couldn't beleive the chassis sophistication, comparing them with Jags. Main problem with the 406 was it couldn't match the fun element the 405 had, price of progress really. It was a heavier car and the 1.8/2.0 petrols couldn't really cope with the weight, especially with the auto (there's no way you'll be getting 35mpg average out of a 2.0 auto!) I found the seats quite uncomfortable actually, again a downward step from the 405. Otherwise wonderful machines.

It must have been a step up from the 405 then..the 1.9 manual petrol was v comfy, lovely to drive and quick but burned oil & generally fell to bits

The 406 was definitely a step up from the 405 in terms of build quality. I had a 405GRi (1.9 8 valve) from new (company car) and while a joy to drive, it drank oil although this was handy at the time as I had a fuel card and it helped me collect loads of BP tokens. It had a new rad at 1200 miles and several bits of the dash fell off. I think it also needed a new throttle body early in its life but but was otherwise fine for the 120K I put on it in 3 years. The 406 was much better inside, better paint, didn't drink oil (as much) but was never quite as nice to drive but that might have been down to mine having been an estate and a having a slush-box.I remember the manual gearbox and clutch in the 405 being peachy.

Had one as a company car back in the day, great fun. I own an NA MX5 so resonate with the owner. Great vid, more like this please :)

Back when Peugeot used to make good cars. The 306 was also a gem.

Still a highly distinctive and fine looking car. Oh how I wish cars like this were still being manufactured. Virtually nothing that 'floats my boat' amongst today's turgid offerings. Sad times

2.0 manual and 2.0 turbo (only 150bhp) were outstanding cars. Point to point exceptionally quick for the power and as you noted outstanding handling. Precise, predictable and great on the limit. Company cars were always faster 😆

Many moons ago I had a 1.9td estate which then was worth about 500 quid. Great old thing which I miss as much as the Alfa 166 which followed - The 406 drove better in my opinion.

An excellent car, the last great Peugeot in my opinion. I have owned two and would happily own another.
