Given that she's attached to a company and most companies are extremely brand loyal due to cost savings... will be she allowed to use the shoes that work best for her? Will she be sacrificing help in paying for her shoes because she's going "off-brand"? If so, that seems so incredibly unfair. I'm really glad she's in well-fitting shoes now. It must be such a game changer for her.

Her current company is fabulous and allows dancers to wear whatever suits their needs :) Though many schools are brand loyal, most ballet companies actually allow their dancers to wear a variety of brands and models.

Wow! She really went a long time dancing in the wrong ill- fitting shoes for her!! Amazing how well she did performing in shoes that weren't fitted for her shape of foot. I'm glad that she came to The Pointe Shoppe and found a pair of shoes that fit her foot well and now she can easily get en pointe!

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.] - (AMPLIFIED version) NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus. Xxx

I have problems getting regular shoes wide enough with enough space for my super high arch and thin ankles. As a child in England Clark’s shoes would sometimes make me a pair as back then they had advertised a promise that they could fit every child’s feet. Now in my 40s and only one company make wide enough shoes for me. Cosyfeet are amazing I would have loved to be a ballerina but couldn’t even get the children’s ballet shoes to fit! Used to go up several sizes and stuff the toe with lambs wool!

Same here! I lasted on pointe for about 6 months. The bulge of my foot out of the box was downright comical. And as a kid my patent leather tap shoes would have to put on the "stretcher" for a week for me to able to fit into them. Online ordering where I could actually try regular shoes in an E or even wider width truly did change my life.

I can understand why schools link up with specific firms from a cost perspective, but it’s something that dancers and parents really need to be aware of, that they need to push for the right shoe for them - getting the wrong shoes could be so damaging for a young dancer and end up limiting their career. Not getting over her box could have pushed this dancer towards a contemporary rather than a classical company for example. Schools and companies should encourage their dancers to say “this shoe/brand isn’t right for me” and work with them to find the right fit so they can dance safely and maximise their potential. It’s all part of their duty of care. Any school that says “we only allow x brand” should be rethinking.

💯. When I danced 🩰 growing up I was only allowed to use one brand , and I was in junior company. I am not sure if those in the advance levels were allowed to use a different brands. Glad to see this information being given out. I wish this youtube channel existed when I was growing up.

When I started pointe work (Italy, around year 2000) we were not only put in just one brand, but even in just one model of that brand! Obviously there were availability/supply problems then, but now with a lot more models per brand, international online sellers, global shippings and even online fitting services schools and companies have absolutely NO EXCUSE for putting dancers in the wrong shoes. Just IMHO

I agree with all you are saying expect contemporary dance being a career limit. The oldest dancers still making a lot of money are contemporary, they have on record the longest careers and space to use there style in multiple ways. It’s also less boring and allows for more personally creativity. From a contemporary dancer

Better yet their teachers should pick up on the fact that the dancer isn't getting over thier shoe despite having both the strength and flexibilty and then recommend they go for a new pointe shoe fitting that helps solve the problem like Josephine does.

I took a halfassed ballet class in school in 4th grade. That one little class, where I was told I "didn't have the body for ballet" didn't extinguish my love of the art. I am old, and fat, and not a dancer by any means, but in my dreams I am spinning like a top in my pointe shoes. Love the vids, even if I am not the target audience.

You ARE the target audience. How old is too old ? I know a lady who started ballet and got onto point at 60!! Even without pointe you can pirouette! You should video your diaries and try local classes

There’s lots of us, Becki, that were told that lie. You don’t have to have a “perfect” body for ballet, or dance in general. If you have a body, or any % of it…then you CAN dance (ballet or anything) because Dance comes from the heart & spirit!! Applause to you- keep dancing!!🤩

Don't let what anyone says to get to you! There are ballet classes out there for adult dancers. Try taking a look into those classes. Maybe they can help you.

This is an old comment, but I was told the same thing when I auditioned for a ballet school attached to a major company. My torso was too long. My legs too short. I was flexible and had turnout and was able to mimic very well and also had great jumps and turns from my training in gymnastics so they said they would “allow me” to train with them but not to expect to be a pro and that I needed to lose 15 pounds minimum (at 10 years old!). I was so sad my mom didn’t let me join but I had a decent run in gymnastics and enjoyed it. Now I’m 40. I took drop in ballet classes from 22-25 and loved it but quit cause I had to move. At 40 I started ballet again and have a private coach who has helped me unlearn all my bad habits from my time doing drop in classes with little corrections. I am able to do pique turns on pointe now! I’ve been dancing about a year and I assumed I would be at the barre doing pointe the whole time. I thought maybe in 2 years I could maybe do a turn. 8 months after starting pointe (I have had to change shoes so much, finally have the right ones with a very low vamp) I can do a single en dedan, and en de hour en pointe as well as pique turns! They are not perfect but my leg is straight and I’m over the box! It’s insane because I was told by several people that no shoe would help me and no amount of training would help cause I have limited range of motion in my ankles. I just rested when I felt I needed and pushed myself took tech class and recorded myself to see my errors. Asked my personal one on one coach to teach me all the things kids are taught that adult students don’t get taught. I took group classes in person and online. My first 4 months I was not en pointe and when I got the go ahead I started with one on one lessons en pointe in person to be sure I was safe and not risking injury. I am tempted to send the naysayers videos of myself now en pointe. I am like a completely different dancer in these shoes! It’s possible. 100% anything is possible. In some cases yes it’s not anatomically possible but patience is the main ingredient. Don’t push too hard. The combination of taking my group pointe class at least 2x a week even when I was feeling low and sad about my ability, taking technique class also at least 3 x a week (some weeks I was taking 5-7 tech classes! I am more relaxed now lol) doing at home exercises my mentor gave me to strengthen my feet, core, improve turnout strength everything needed to be stronger lol AND also the gentle stretching pointe work naturally gave my feet is what helped me get over my box and helped me get from being pretty bad technique wise to shocking people who had not seen me dance in 6 months. My posture ability, memory lines everything was so much better. I had three ladies and the teacher of a beginner tech ballet class for adults (the very first in person one I attended when coming back after 15 years) come up to me to ask HOW I managed to improve so much in 7 months. When I explained they were flabbergasted. Private lessons and more technique classes (not with the teacher they worshipped). They all took private lessons with her and had not progressed over 3 years. She didn’t believe adults could do much as beginners and she also isn’t a great teacher sadly. I explained I sought out a teacher who doesn’t say what is wrong but tells the student the solution and how to perform the step perfectly. I said I was taking zoom classes to supplement but only high quality ones where the teacher has a giant screen and is only teaching zoom students. One lady tried the zoom class I recommended and hated it. Kept complaining that the teacher was not easy to see, was too fast, said she was a bad teacher cause she wears all black?! I can see her just fine. So can her other students. I was pretty offended at the hate toward my mentor who is an in demand teacher who works with pros and pre pros and is exceptionally talented at dance and teaching. She is a former principal and danced at many major companies and is so talented as a teacher that she has companies like ABT trying to entice her to work with their professional dancers. She worked as a pro with famous teachers like Monica Mason, and Suzanne Farrell , also legends from the Bolshoi and teachers from The Kirov! like they are some of the most amazing teachers, and she toured all over and danced for 30 years! I was dumbfounded. The reason came out by accident from her after I carefully was asking questions . She hated not knowing everything! If a move was done and she had never seen it she would be angry She hated how she felt like everyone was so flexible.. I was like wait how are you seeing other dancers you don’t have the teacher pinned? I was like-you should have the teacher pinned. Not the other students 🙃🤦‍♀️ she felt insecure like they were judging her. Because that’s is EXACTLY what she does. She lives her life that way and assumes others are the same. It’s hard to improve in ballet if you spend the whole class looking at other students. When we are in classs if I get any correction (which I am happy to get-I pay for correction! ) She smirks and laughs behind her hand. I feel sad for her. She doesn’t want to improve. She just wants to be in a class where she is the best. I wondered for a while why she would make a face when I would show up to an in person class. Especially since it is a class put together for her and other adults who wanted a good class in person. I made sure it was at a time we all could attend and worked with the owner of a new studio. The owner is a very good teacher. At least she now takes private lessons with the good teacher and she has improved. She only enjoys private lessons and small groups because she is so insecure. She is still angry at me for suggesting the zoom classes! They would help her if she could discard her ego. I just have to deal with her assuming I am like her. She is insecure but also very judgmental. She pays too much attention to others during class and compares herself. She hates not being the the best at everything so she gets angry when new people show up and when I attend class. I simply have put in more time! She takes one tech class a week and one private. I was taking multiple classes a day and now at least 4 weekly. I am recovering from a bad illness unrelated to dance. Anyway! Never giving up on finding the shoe for me is also what helped me succeed! And the right teacher! I don’t have delusions of being a performer I just am so happy it’s like my inner child is so overjoyed to be dancing and improving. My next goal is to get secure enough and good enough technique wise to perform a variation en pointe. Not for an audience, just for me! I can do a variation and dance in a studio alone and record it or at home either way I just love ballet. I hope you try and whatever goal you have whether it’s just to dance and learn or to get en pointe one day that you achieve it!

Yeah, Freed was a nightmare for me as well. I don’t even know why I tried, other than Freeds get so much praise. I know OBT near me requires students wear Freeds, not only Freed, but Freed Classics. I feel bad for the kids that will blame themselves, when their issues could easily be solved with a change in brand. This type of practice shouldn’t even be allowed. I don’t care what Freed says, they don’t offer enough customs to make their shoes work on anyone, they barely even carry 3 widths. I’ve pretty much stuck with Nikolay because they’re the only brand that carries wide enough with widths + shanks that break high enough for me. Even with Russian Pointe, a softer shank equals a shank that break lower in and that is frustrating. Sure you can get over a lower breaking shank, but it really leaves you unsupported and causes you to use your feet incorrectly.

Forcing everyone into the same shoe sounds horrible! I'm a figure skater and I wear a boot that is a "you love it, or you hate it" brand. I'm in the "love it" category, it's the best boot I've ever worn and it fixed so many of the problems that my old boots were causing me. But I can't imagine forcing it onto everyone since the people for who it doesn't work for REALLY struggle in it. Or forcing me to continue to skate in my old boots just because my coach liked the brand better. That'd be absurd!

@@Ailieorz With the Freed maker system, which is a huge headache btw, they are different, but there are still core properties of Freeds that don’t make them suitable for all dancers.

I know quite a number of schools and company around the world only allow Freed pointe shoes. No other brands. And there are dancers who need to quit dancing because of the injuries brought by improperly fitted shoes, or due to bad experience and intense pain when they’re forced to wear Freed only. Every ballet related person should watch this video !!

Thank you for displaying the “Before” and “After” images a few seconds longer than usual. I was able to see & catch the improvements and differences in this video. As someone who is old & rickety but is a dancer at heart, I love your videos. A friend had me try her shoes many years ago when I was in my late teens/early 20’s and I had no issues standing or walking on them back then. No even a pinch of owch on my high arched feet. I’d take lessons if I could afford them even if I’m in my 60’s now. Much love from northeast Florida to you…💜💞💝

great format! One question about the anatomy of the foot: can you describe what happens to the foot when the shoe is too narrow and twist vs to when you give her the new shoe? Are the toes too compressed? Is that affecting how then they flex underneath? I would love to understand this as I think I have exactly this issue

Am also in my early 60’s and danced as a child but had shoes back then I was supposed to “grow into” too large and my feet stopped growing so never fit right. I bought a pair of capezio’s on Mercari thinking I could just dance around my kitchen with no one watching (as the song goes) but even the widest weren’t wide enough. Gave them away. Maybe next year!

Freed was the worst for me, the shoe broke down after my first pointe class, I just took the shank out and made them into demi pointes and switched to Grishko 2007 which were 10x better for me. Then I broke my ankle and never dancer en pointe again

I don't understand how she was in a professional company when she couldn't get over her box? in the UK there are thousands of highly talented dancers chasing a handful of places in schools and in companies so she simply would never ever have been picked at the audition process as it is cut throat.. i am not saying she isn't a beautiful dancer or she isn't talented but they would have a whole room jam packed with girls as good if not better, it is like a perfect dancer with a body flaw in the ballet world would be the best dancer they have ever seen but if it is something that can't be altered through diet and exercise or even surgery(as i personally know dancers that have had breast reductions and liposuction to areas of fat) then they are not selected.

I had a very hard foot to fit (wide, low-arch - but strong) and it took me YEARS to find a shoe I could get over comfortably, which ended up being Russian Pointe Grandes. I was in a school that was connected to the company, and they had a junior and senior company for middle-school and high-school aged kids that I was in, and they used Freed for pointe shoes and I could NOT ever get over them. They always felt like they broke so easily, yet I still couldn’t get over them 😓

I am 40 and training in ballet after over 20 years of not seriously dancing. My personal goal is to eventually get en pointe, which I have not done in the past (my feet were still developing, strength-wise, when I quit). But I am already dreading it, lol! I even have trouble finding flats that fit comfortably. I feel like my feet are narrow, and my toes are very tapered. I wear a 6.5 in street shoes typically. Right now I am wearing Bloch Synchrony flats in a 5 narrow. I love how snugly they hug my arch, but they also pull on my big toe from underneath. Anyway, is there a particular brand of pointe shoe that's good for first timers with narrow, tapered feet? Obviously, I know to get fitted when it's time, but just as a possible starting point?

The biggest issue I see with the girls I train for Pas de Deux (class and performance) is that it's too easy for them to get over the box which means they hold back on ankle extension. They'll have their ankle slightly flexed and they simply curl to box under so that they're technically on the box, but their standing leg alignment is not over the box. This makes it very hard for them to turn and very hard for their partner to hold them up. Most of the professionals with good hyperextended ankles require a box that is hard for people with normal feet to get over.

I went to Washington school in DC.. and they sent us to the nearby Capezio store to get fitted [don't remember them suggesting any brand]. They had a large selection of brands and did a good job... guess not all dancers are as lucky [of course this was in the late 80's early 90's]. I had wide, square toes/ball and narrow heal, and practically no arch - I got over in all shoes i tried, but we all knew not to even attempt the thinner toe box.

I'm not a dancer, have never worn a ballet shoe. SO WHY is it that I find it so dang SATISFYING when I watch Josephine successfully diagnose the problems and help a dancer out? I just love these vids. Couldn't say why, but I think I'm addicted.

I had a similar problem (but the opposite kind of foot - low profile, narrow feet). It was only recently when I went to a different pointe shoe fitter that she finally recognised the issue - I suit a half shank, not the typical full or 3/4 shank due to the shape of my foot. Previous fitters simply said it was because my shoes were too hard and that my feet weren't strong enough. Now I'm comfortably dancing en pointe again with no trouble getting over the box and my wee feet are THRIVING

I get this a lot where I live, there's not a lot of stores that stock adult pointes and if they do it's only one brand. So I have a pair of Bloch Heritage that I know don't fit after trying Grishko in one store and Capezio in another but don't have a lot of options to try others. I've mostly stopped dancing now but I'd have loved to have a fully range to try from when I was starting pre-pointe

Right commenters, help me out. What does 'can't get over her box' actually mean? I know absolutely nothing about ballet, I'm just a fan of overly specific RU-vid channels. From my pov, in both shoes she is on her toes so what exactly are they talking about? I can see the twist, I can see the first shoes are too narrow, just don't see what it is she can't do in the first pair that she can do now.

I had my first point shoes fitted a few days ago. I did sprain my ankle a few months ago and my left foot still doesn't point perfectly, but I wanted to get my pointshoes now, because where I live there is no big ballet shop, and when I tried pointshoes there, they only had 2 pairs in my size, none of which fit me well. The fitter immediately noticed, but she still agreed to fit the point shoes because she thought that my right foot was very strong for never having been on pointe - I am a guy, 19, just starting on pointe btw. She made me promise to go really soft on my left foot, which I am absolutely doing, and I eventually found a perfect pair. I am really surprised how it just doesn't hurt to stand on pointe. (when I was in the other shop my feet got squished and it was really uncomfortable, but now I got like really wide pointshoes and they feel perfect) Like I only stood on my right foot (since I can't fully point my left) and it was still very comfy.

My shoes are looking like that dancer's right now. Its my 3rd year en pointe and i'm on my fourth pair. I wear blochs european balance and they're not working for me at all. Also my left big toe digs into the floor, its a nightmare!

With a channel devoted to pointe work, you need to get your terminology correct. The term *en pointe* does not exist. In English, it's *on pointe,* and in French it's *sur les pointes* or *sur la pointe.* The bastardized *en pointe* originated among English speakers trying to show off.

Hi Josephine I really love watching all your videos and learning all the intracicies of Pointe shoes, I'm a guy who wants to work on being able to get up on pointe, I bought some shoes years ago and they fitted for me being a beginner pointe dancer (they are reasonably stiff to help support me once I'm on pointe so I think they're probably the right choice for a training shoe until I gain some more strength and flex and technique). Anyway I find it really interesting how you point out all the things wrong with certain shoes on some dancers and I think it is really good for dancers to know what to look out for in terms of possible problems with thier current shoe like you do so they can then go and potentially get their shoes refitted. Do you think that as a dancers' strength and technique improves over time they should go and get a shoe "check up" by a pointe shoe fitter to make sure they're still in the right type of shoe?

Love watching your videos, even though my teacher isn't ever going to put me on pointe. Been dancing for 8 years, feet are super strong, old enough, balance is improving, mature enough, and I've had other teachers from other studios agree that I'm ready. I mean, I can even go on on pointe in my tap shoes, all the way up, without jumping, holding on to anything, bending my knees, it's easy. I've literally done some pointe exercises in my tap shoes, because I can (I'm extremely careful though) She just won't invite me to pre pointe. I'm better than half of the kids on pointe, they can't even get over their box. All of the younger kids are already on pointe, or are just getting their pointe shows, it's so frustrating. I can't move to a different studio, this is the only one in my town, and we can't drive to the ones in the big city close to us. I've politely asked my teacher several times about it (Hi, I'm really interested in taking pre pointe, could you evaluate me during class next week?) Because that's what all of my friends did, and it worked for them. She just says "Sure" and then next week, she doesn't look at me the entire class, and walks out before I can talk to her. I'm considering dropping dance completely, even though we're halfway through learning recital. She just makes it not fun.

Try finding a different studio if you can, don’t just quit! Pointe shoes are a lot of fun and definitely worth it. I hope you can get on pointe soon

Is it possible to talk to different teachers in your studio? Maybe even talk to the director if you feel comfortable with it? Get your parents involved as well, they might be able to talk to your teacher / director better. Good luck, I hope you'll be able to get en pointe soon!

@@AndreaBetarani Thank you. Unfortunately there's only one ballet teacher at my studio, and if my parents talked to her about it, I'm pretty sure she would say my feet "just aren't ready yet". So I quitting, even though I hate to stop dancing

62 years old n have slightly broad feet, and one nasty bunion on right foot which is my larger foot, which is normal. Usually the right foot is longer. And may never afford to have the bunion corrected. Point of pointe is they damage feet, and the forced first position does damage by pinching the lower spine. Terrible price to pay for art. *As a youngster there was no choosing a type of shoe. Today I can't even get my better left foot in properly into my old shoes. And I'm as thin as as a stick, with no extra weight.

This advice applies to the doctors office too. Don't tell yr doctor what you think your problem is, tell them what you are experiencing and the symptoms or sensations, how long you've had them etc. Then the doctor can make a proper assessment and discuss
