For everyone who is upset about my hang test. Here is a background on the test, and why I use it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_inlW1EYT4I.html
Try reinforcing it with duct tape, like Dave: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TB_L4V8dRac.html 😁 Of course, it is good to buy a good quality tarp, but if you have leftover cheap ones, reinforce them. ☺️
That's why military gear always has double or triple stitching. If the material around the grommet allows some stretching under pressure, the seam above it would be less likely to rip. Interesting video! 🍻
Shiiiiit... 20 bones for a year with repeated use? Sounds good to me, man. It’s called an emergency blanket for a reason. If you’re constantly getting into emergency situations for a whole year, stay home. Otherwise, this is a good deal lol
I have to agree with you. I don’t want to spend 200 bucks for something that is going to live in my car. I just bought two of these, one for each car. I do not plan to use them unless I have to.
I like how he say's this is a big fail, but then doesn't offer a better solution. You don't even have any type of tarp on your "Grunt approved" web store.
Outstanding Brother, I was looking at the Bigger Size Blanket, I think they advertise it as 10x13 Thank you for Sharing your Grunt Test. Which Product do you recommend, I appreciate your opinions and Hounesty. Sincerely your freind from Mo Rick and God Bless you 🙏 and God Bless America 🇺🇸 🙏 and God Bless all of the Great Veterans and First Responders.
I agree with your conclusions but... I think everyone is overlooking two important things. 1) You said you were using it regularly for about a year, didn't mention storage or care conditions, and then performed a weighted hang test. It was good after an hour but you didn't mention the time to failure. 2) It says "Emergency Survival All Purpose Blanket", not regular hard use shelter tarp. Again, I admit that it should be able to handle rugged conditions but it doesn't seem to me that an "Emergency" blanket should be held to the same long-term durability as a product made for regular long-term use.
All valid points. I agree I could have put more details in about that. I'm working on my process and appreciate the feedback. As far as previous use, I have a lot of items that are years old, I used downrange, and they still work fine. And as for the tarp use: I know they call it a blanket, but if they put grommets in it, that tells me they are pushing multiple uses. So that's how I'm going to test it. All in all it's not a terrible product, especially for the price, and I mentioned that . Thanks again
To be honest I don't think the comparison to a usgi poncho is very fair. A real usgi poncho is actually 68 by 82 and cost easily twice as much. A more fair test is actually against other reflective tarps of which it is one of the most heavy duty. Most of your reflective tarps and emergency blankets on the market are all 5x7 and rip fairly easy. 5x7 has been a staple size for emergency tarps and blankets for years. The reason appears that the size is large enough for an emergency and most fabrics are made in 60-in widths. So five foot is about as wide as you can get without stitching pieces together or getting custom fabric. I actually looked into making custom usgi poncho because a true usgi poncho is just not available. I agree the storage bag is a piece of garbage. However there are other thermal tarps that don't even include a storage bag for the same price. So in comparison to those other options, the storage bag is a value. I'm not saying your criticisms aren't warranted. I'm just saying for its price point and it's competition, it's really not that bad.
I think it has some other uses in the field. But if it's your main shelter and you have some high winds come in, you'll be sleeping out in the cold for sure
@Greg Johnson..I think I got a good idea who that might be. He was real deal real reviews initially. But it soon turned to outstanding check out my amozon store
I've used the same arcturus tarp for 3 years, and it's still going strong. I have used it as a bottom cloth as well as an actual shelter, in various environments throughout all four seasons in the northwest. I don't want to call out this review as being a lie, but I will call it out for "he must have the worst luck ever." Especially if you're calling it the worst piece of survival gear ever lololololoo. Sorry, but there is one thing all of your reviews lack that is needed for an accurate review, and that is integrity. If I want some know nothing expert living off of past glory to try and give themselves some sort of credit to be able to be an expert, I'll... No hold that. Nobody needs to hear a review from someone who has no idea what they're talking about. I don't know what you're doing to your blankets to "test them", but mine have handled snow, ice, high winds, hard rain, large hail and gravel just fine. Again this is just another one of your Grudge reviews that does nothing but make you look foolish. Enjoy.
I've had my one for just over a year, had to patch it a couple of times with tape. But that's acceptable as it's an emergency blanket, heat reflecting is great. Along with my DD-3x3 it makes for a highly versatile setup. Keep the clumsy idiots away from it and it'll be fine 👌🏼
no offense, but i disagree with you entirely on this....i've packed and unpacked mine over 50 times, used in all kinds of weather, ZERO issues...maybe you got a bad issue...but, calling you out.. We'll agree to disagree
I've been a Grabber blanket user for ten years now and always loved them. Over the past two years everyone has been commenting I should get an Arcturus. I bought one, haven't even used it yet. I gotta say after seeing this I know better now. Thanks for doing this video brother.
No problem. It will serve you better than the Grabber for sure. And depending on the use and how much you protect it, it should last. Just don't treat it like all that heavy duty surplus stuff 😁
Do you have a suggestion for something better than this? I agree I have watched another veteran review and promote this product. I inflow I won’t buy this now.
It passed Corporals Corner stress test. Also it is a supplemental piece of gear and not really meant to be a shelter (only emergency), that is why it is advertised as and used as a ground cloth and a blanket. I plan to buy 2, and stagger and cynch them together at the gromets to make it about 6 foot long. Then I plan to combine it to my Romanian Plash Palatka & Wool Blanket for a sleep system. I will be sure to leave my 20LB Dumbells home for the camp.
well you do not speak for all gear community. the bag it comes with means nothing and should be thrown away anyway. no one complains that normal tarps dont come with a bag. this is no different. and hanging weights meant nothing because it didnt represent a real scenarios where it would need to hold weight.
Thanks for "weighing in." Before you trash the hang test, go see where it comes from and why I use it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_inlW1EYT4I.html
Yea, i've been really sick of this for a long time. Then EVEN when a product fails, these youtubers are like WeLL this one thing failed. But i've always trusted their products they make great products. i have their whatever thing and OH i use their other thing they make too it's SO AMAZING blah blah blah. Like man. Could it be more obvious? =$$$$$ No. if a company does some sh*t like this? i will never ever trust anything they ever make. Would anyone let a babysitter watch their kids and one dies in some negligent accident but it's like OH it's just that one kid. All the others are fine so u good. i'll pick them up again tomorrow. no worries 😂
I keep these as part of a car emergency kit, but they don’t get regular use, their for emergencies only. Hence the name. You can’t beat a good canvas 10x10 tarp for your basic kit. Thanks for the review, it’s spot on as far as not being able to survive daily or even weekly use.
I use two grabber space blankets. I never use the grommets, though, they WILL fail you at one point (when you need it the least...) The silver lining saved my ass in the mountains, I underestimated how cold it would be over night. abit too cold for my jungle bag.
I came to your channel by way of the Arcturus web site as I was looking at getting one these blanket/tarps. Good video and informative. You appear to care about providing good information so your audience can make sound decisions. I like that. As for the tarp; good review. Durability is a major factor. Under the right conditions anything can fail. I would suggest that if durability is a concern using this item as a shelter, then don't use it as a shelter. It is designed to reflect heat so grab a poncho and a woobie with the tarp in between and use it as a so called Ranger taco or something similar. Then use something more designed as a shelter: a good canvas tarp as someone else commented. Anyway, that is my 2 cents for whatever it is worth. Thank you for your service and I am a new subscriber now.
Great comment. It passed Corporals Corner stress test. Also it is a supplemental piece of gear and not really meant to be a shelter (only emergency), that is why it is advertised as and used as a ground cloth and a blanket. Good test. Thanks. One of those things which possibly needs lots of fixes and repairs and may well fail anyway. It's a civilian product and should brand itself accordingly.
@@GruntProof I suppose "medium to light duty...if you are careful" doesnt have quite the same brand appeal to some people :) I'd possibly appreciate their honesty though! I will have a look at the US Army casualty blanket out of interest. Not heard of it before. 🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
After you said you have used it for a year, that's proof it will hold up pretty well under normal use. But yeah, I wouldn't use it to hang heavy objects from, specially a $21.99 product lol.
Hi Randall, thanks for the warning. Actually I had never heard of the Arcturus til now. I have a Grabber emergency space blanket/tarp. Haven't tried it as a shelter yet, just a ground sheet.👍
I got the large version last year but havnt put it through a rigerous test like this. It all looks the same , i just hope it survives better. And yes , the storage bag is diabolical.
That you were able to use it for a year is a good thing for a plastic blanket, but weak seam and zero ripstop is two strikes against it. It should have at least a grommet in the middle of the long side to secure it from wind in a standard A frame set-up. Glad I've seen this video after Corporals Corner. I'll cross this one off my list.
Good review, thanks. Have been thinking about one of these recently. And in UK they're a lot more expensive. Start looking again. Any recommendations gratefully appreciated. All stay well 👍
I actually have several of these, they're definitely not heavy duty. But they come through in a pinch, and for the price I'm happy to get a half dozen camping trips out of them. They do make a twelve foot by eight foot one now for forty bucks on Amazon, and you can use that one in a situation like you described. By making a lean to or half shelter, with the tarp going underneath you as a ground cloth. I've actually done that for winter camping trips, and with a long fire close by it definitely helps reflect the heat. Corporals Corner was the one who recommended this emergency blanket. But I agree with you, it doesn't have enough eyelets, and isn't heavy duty enough to withstand heavy abuse. Great video! I love gear reviews!!🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸

I was expecting it to be much thicker,, and yes no ripstop. It is hard to tell what you are going to get when you buy something online. If I had seen it in the store, at first touch I would have never bought it.
Sorry buddy to play the smart ass but my poncho it's from 68 Vietnam. So it's earlier a 70s! And smells like Agent Orange! I like a smell of Agent orange in the morning! 😆
Ah, the angry reviewer. Actually, I was not "waiting for" anything. You bought a 5 x 7 tarp and are pissed that it's not 6 x 8 ? All rational reviews are comparative. The question is, is this $20 cheapie tarp better than the other $20 cheapie tarp. You want a $40 tarp, dude,. Buy one and be happy.
Great review. I looked at your approved products, but didn't see anything when it comes to a silver reflective tarp to help lower temperatures in hot conditions. Do you have any recommendations?
Arcturus now has an extra large survival blanket/tarp and it has 8grommets. I think I paid $44. Its Almost like they saw your video and listened to you. The carry bag though won't be able to be used more than once but you can use it for something else. I would like you to test the new one.
I think a good application for this is as an emergency shelter to toss into a day bag for hiking in case things go wrong. I’ll add extra stitching into my seams, no biggie.
Awesome man! At first it seemed alright but that little tear turned into a massive FUBAR...damn! That's so true, so many people hold something up in the package or use it once and call it good. I'd hard to see this on a windy day if I were to try and use it as a tarp or tent. Keep up the great work!
These blankets work for me but I like what you did here. If I want to do extended stay in it's best to spend the real money on a better tarp. You might of saved me a lot of trouble.
Poops. Wish I watched your video before I bought it on the other fellows say so. He went down in my esteem as soon as I opened the packet and saw how cheap the material is.
@@GruntProof That would be nice, but the material is undoubtedly cheap and not in the least durable - which negates the benefit of large grommets and reinforced corners etc.
apparently they have an XL that when fully open measures at 8.5' x 12'! the pics on amazon looks like it has a few extra grommets but im not totally sure
The only thing I really use the Arcturus tarp for is a ground sheet for sleep system when folded in half its the perfect size and its 5×7 so perfect for a A-frame over a hammock

Thanks for this. Do you have any survival blankets at this price point that DON'T rip? It seems like these Arcturus ones are the toughest in the bunch (compares to SOL, Grabber, etc.)
@@GruntProof A cheap price almost always measn a cheap product and rarely means value. The USGI Casalty Blanket, Plastic is 33% heavier and slightly smaller. It is availabkle for as littekl as $12.00. It is described as "light weight,." There are "heavy duty" reflective plastic blankets - up to 4 lbs. There are larger reflective polastic blankets. Reviews are most useful when they objectively compare products and present tests that can be repeated.
I found the SOL blanket equivalent of this blanket abandoned on a beach and I have been using it (I'm a hobo I sleep outside every night unless housed for a job temp.) Mostly as a gear cover or ground sheet. But the SOL one is orange and shiny silver so not always the best option . I'm pretty pleased with it, though it's pretty imperfec, it is pretty strong. I don't think I would spend 20$ on another SOL blanket when I could get a heavy duty 6x8 tarp from Walmart.
@@GruntProof I am in FB jail for 2 months. I cannot like, or comment in groups till after Christmas. Guess they did not like what I had to say when they blocked several of my posts. I will check out and follow your Instagram. Hey, I am new to the ATV side of the house. Could you do more videos of loadouts and use? I do not find much "tactical" atv stuff to give me ideas. I live on a golf course and I ride mine along the cart path, at night with my dual pvs14 setup. It is fun, but I am looking for ways to incorporate my gear onto it for say duty use. I am building a ghillie cover for it as we speak. Its more of a fun project to give me something to do than anything functional. Anyway, appreciate the videos Brother. Keep up the great work.
