The Sudd swamp in South Sudan is Africa’s largest freshwater wetland. This unique landscape spreads out from the White Nile and is home to more than 400 bird and 100 mammal species. But the Jonglei Canal, a massive project aiming to divert water downstream to Egypt, could be about to change it forever. Dredging operations began in summer 2022 to reduce flooding around the swamp, much to conservationists’ concern. What impact do they fear the Jonglei Canal might have on the Sudd? And why was such a major construction project left half finished in the first place?

I truly hope you have covered GERD with the same zeal and critical tone. Drawing the entire issue as an overreach of Egypt may be true, but the current Ethiopian government has an equal role in pressuring South Sudan to stop the project. For heaven's sake, cover all sides with your fair share of criticism. Do not forget the richest countries in Earth who are turning a blind eye to the economic destitution of African countries.
@Sadiku11

@@muethepoe4942 I’m glad that you added more light on this situation. South Sudan 🇸🇸 is a “poor” country by western standards, although we know that Africa, and South Sudan specifically, is a very rich continent and country respectively. Egypt is flexing its muscles against a poorer, less developed country because Ethiopia has threatened to go to war with Egypt 🇪🇬 over the GERD Project, thus Egypt really doesn’t want that smoke - WAR - with Ethiopia 🇪🇹 , so Egypt 🇪🇬 is not trying to bully South Sudan 🇸🇸. My advice to South Sudan: “DO NOT BUILD THAT CANAL BECAUSE IN LESS THAN 10 YEARS YOU WILL REGRET IT!! DO NOT LET EGYPT BULLY YOU!”

That doesn’t matter to the rich people that control everything. The only thing that matters is that the trees there can be sold off as valuable lumber, and having the airport located there will increase profits enough to let them buy an 8th vacation house.

The only thing the canal would do is to cause more of the problems it was build to solve. More flooding but more importantly longer and harsher draughts. The wetlands serve as a water reservoir and supply downstream lands with water when there's little to go by. If you make the water move faster, you'll get more water when there's an abundance of it, so it will cause bigger floods. And there will be none remaining for the dry season.

Instead of building South Sudan's Economy by using the waters of the Sudd for Agriculture and industrial use To get a better GDP per Capital and per year, The leaders are thinking of ways to destory the territory as a whole. Wat a disgrace

The canal can still be built with environmental protection measures. The whole river will not be diverted.......only a small portion.

Just move water from The Kongo. That is super easy to do. If you increase the Discharge in The White NIle, by 50%, then you can send this surpluss into this chanal.
