So what you do is set the bar for being something (racist, sexist, homophobic) incredibly low, but you keep the same “punishment” for someone who is the extreme example of that “crime.” So if someone makes a mildly racist joke 10 years ago, you hold them accountable to the same level as someone who today calls black people racial slurs in rage. It’s terrifying to see this happening.
agreed, and because of shit like this there are people out there that literally think racism doesn't exist, because they keep seeing normal people be called racist over nothing, or over past mistakes that probably were made in a very different social climate

There are certain beliefs that will make me not wanna like have an intimate relationship with someone but I’m of the firm belief that in order to get anything done we are going to have to work with and for people we don’t necessarily like or agree with. And I will 100% always advocate for doing more in your community! I think it’s a lot to do with the fact that a lot of people are a lot more bold online because they get to be anonymous there. Especially children. They are the most pure part of humanity and I feel every child deserves to have a happy childhood. And we all had to like explain to her that she can't use that word, it's considered a racial slur. She was legitimately dumbfounded and thought we were fucking with her at first. So... I dunno. Yep it's a completely different cultural context. A tiny percentage of Russians are black, ironically because Russia didn't participate in the African slave trade. From Wiki: "Representatives of African peoples in the Russian language are commonly called negry. The word negr comes from Spanish: negro (the color black in spanish) through other European languages (German: Neger, French: nègre). In the Russian language the word does not carry a negative connotation."

Also, the fact that she's Russian - they're not the most sensitive to the Western take on race (I should know, I'm Russian and grew up with other Russians. When my family moved to Canada, I, as an 8 year old who started going to school here, had to explain to my parents that they couldn't describe people as "negro"). And to be fair, she IS a huge minority in Russia. Anyone who is different (disability, sexuality, race) is highly discriminated against there. Was what she said/posted a little bit tone deaf? Sure. Was it full of hate? No. Does she deserve to be "cancelled". I really don't think so. PS. Elijah is INCREDIBLY gay. And honestly, I'm kind of proud of him for being so "out" on TV. Again, because he's Russian and not only do Russians think that gays shouldnn't be "public" but a lot of people would lose it over the fact that he's being so out on Western TV.

About the culture in Russia. We literally had a guy doing blackface on national TV as his main shtick up until something like 2006. And people only started "catching up" with the rest of the world recently on things like this. It is still widely acceptable to say homophobic and transphobic things in Russia, many people here are still openly racist. Don't know what to make of it, but just for context.
Just for some cultural context, the N-word even in its hard R form, isn’t thought of as this despicable unforgivable word outside of North America, The UK and parts of Oceania. I’ve heard Swedish, French and German people use the N-word in public (ending in a, with no attempt to be cruel or derogatory to another race), within the last year or so. It is entirely reasonable to assume this Russian woman in 2015, was completely oblivious to the history behind that word. For a more modern example of a large scale obliviousness to the n-word, look up Vtuber’s mimicking the way Lamar David in GTAV says the N-word. It’s clear in the videos these Japanese streamers have no idea that what they’re could land them in serious trouble on the internet.

as a german, yes, i met some russians who use the n word more regulary and said offensive shit which we in germany don't like much. But also, many many germans say the n-word a lot. I grew up in a very shitty part of Luton, England where it was very 'us or them'. My mother was also very racist unless someone from a different ethnicity or country did something for her and had a habit of dating racist men. Over the years that conditioned me to become racist in ways and using words and beliefs I thought were okay up until I was 14-15. Since then I have travelled, move away from most of my family and most of my friends are from different ends of the world. Making bad mistakes when you're younger and growing from them is one of the basic fundamental parts of being human.

I believe in Russian the equivalent of black person (that is used non perjoritavely) is quite similar to the English N word whereas calling someone black is interpreted in a more racist way. of course this doesn't change that since she said it in English it's racist but it does give some more context to how she may have misinterpreted the words meaning
As a black person of color I've gotta say that i don't think she is racist. She made dumb jokes several years ago back when those jokes where funny and you where allowed to make them. Right now they aren't okay but back then they were. It was several years ago and she has changed since then. This is stupid. 2015 was one year after I graduated high school. High school fucked me up, I am not the same person I was 7 years ago, I have changed drastically since getting out of high school. The people that knew me 7 years ago knew a completely different person to the person I am now. So to this kind of thinking, the "cancel people for making a joke no matter when it was" type of mindset is dangerous.

Canceling and calling someone racist because they used a certain word while being the wrong skin tone, in this case the word was not even being used derogatorily. If they wouldn’t fire a black person for the same words then that makes them the racists, full fucking stop.
