These 2 reasons are my biggies for mulching this summer. Also I cover what I'm amending my in-ground fig trees with before I add the mulch. Finally I have one important yet simple strategy I use to make sure my fig trees do well with their new mulch layer.
I had 6 cubic yards delivered to my home form Wilmington and about 1/3 went to my fig micro orchard. The rest covered the back of my property and other fruit trees and I may need more! That's ok with me after learning about how IMPORTANT it is to mulch your gardens and green space on a regular basis, to keep your plants healthy in this hot summer sun!
Let me know if you have any questions. I did this over a week ago, but wish I had done it this spring because geez was it hot haha!
Everyone stay safe and hydrated this summer gardening! Working in the mornings is crucial to beat the summer heat in the garden. What mulching strategies did you do this summer?!

Phil

Hahah - heck yeah brotha. I'm really enjoying your videos. Get those garden endorphins: love that thanks! Looks really great. Living the dream. Make it happen Have you considered using beneficial nematodes? They are worth their weight in gold, imo

I am currently looking into beneficial microbes and beneficial nematodes are on the list! Thank you for confirming. I plant to inoculate the soil with all kinds of goodies to "crowd out" the bad ones. Thanks man!

@@edslim718 It's worth it to have Foxfarm if you can afford it! That's good stuff right there.

@@Philsfigs yeah it's really expensive if you buy the small bottles. The price cuts ~1/4 when you buy the gallon bottles. You have to see how much my figs love it. I use all the different varieties. Different things at different times of the season, and the trees actually respond as expected and extremely well. Most of my tree are first year, and you would never guess it from a quick look. I have two big experiments going. In one section with ~25 different potters, the trees get 4 hours of sun max. They're all growing a ton. And there is a lot of fruit. Now the test is to see if they ripen and taste good. I think the combo of the insanely hot texas sun / heat + the fox farm love they all get, it might work. My guess is they will ripen and taste good, but I just won't be able to get as much fruit as compared to full sun.

Where did you get the irrigation system? I have a huge bag from drip depot sitting in my house. I've only connected the tap and need to do the rest. It's a 100 deg every day here in dallas. It's going to take hours to do I think. Not sure. Looking forward to your video on it LOL

I bought mine through the drip depot and I use 1/2 gal button drippers (blue) that I run for 2hrs, I am going to dry a different type of watering tip for my in-ground trees that I am testing out with now. All my tubing was from drip depot and they really have everything you can think of. I do think about switching to my 1gal per hour (green) button drippers.

I think you're really risking spreading that RKN around by using and moving soil between different areas of your yard. You would also need to sanitize your tools in between. It's a real pain, but you may find yourself at a point where you can't grow figs and many other trees in the ground anymore.

Thanks for the info. I probably should have mentioned that I washed and sanitized my tools before tackling the mulch and topsoil / compost blend. Full disclosure it was a pain to clean it all, but totally worth it to have it off my conscience. Any mulch were the RKN's were located were from some bagged stuff. I wanted to isolate the space. Then interestingly enough I want to see how the Negra D'Agde that is next to the infected area does over the next few years. It's some serious tiptoeing around the infected area until I get the black plastic laid down. Fortunately the topsoil / compost blend is stored on the far side of the yard.

What kind of mulch do you use?

I order in bulk from Wilmington Compost Company. They offer a hardwood bark mulch that I like to use that my garden space really enjoys.
