Skylanders was literally my childhood. I owned literally all the figures from the first wave except the legendary repaints, Wham-Shell and Zap.

Amiibos are still going strong, and it’s thanks to Activision Disney and Lego since Nintendo brought the idea.

I'm glad Amiibo are still a thing, they make me very very happy. Making a little shrine of all my favorite Amiibo is very mwah, I remember playing with them like dolls with my sister as a kid too omg

Actually a big factor nobody talks about is the shops. All these toys to life things took up space, and a lot of it. So eventually it reached a point where the majority of these figures and packs and stuff just weren't on the shelves at all, because there wasn't enough space! This was literally right before online retailers started overtaking the physical shops too. In my nearby shop, there was a small handful of figures from each kind of toys to life series, where there used to be just Skylanders - meaning that where I used to always be able to buy a new Skylander because they had so many different ones on the shelf, it became a case of I already had the ones they were selling, and the ones I wanted just were not there. Part of that was also poor planning from Activision though (they did a Beanie Baby thing where some figures were more common in certain areas than others), but this issue applied to Lego Dimensions too. There is definitely an element of rush being there as well, and in the case of Lego Dimensions I think a huge factor was that it came out a year too soon - if they had waited a year, they would have been able to justify not releasing on the Xbox 360 and PS3, meaning they could focus more on polish and less on making the thing work on the old systems. I mean seriously, as soon as the Year 2 content dropped, it started crashing constantly on my 360 - clearly the game was being held back massively by these old systems! Playing it nowadays on Wii U, it runs pretty well, though there is slowdown and long loading times. I feel like if Lego Dimensions had been able to ignore older consoles, they might have been able to pull off their three year plan and maybe Lego would stand alongside Amiibo as lone survivors of the Toys to Life craze. Genuinely, Lego Dimensions had some real ideas behind it that were incredibly unique and could easily have survived at least a decade if they weren't restricted by the limits of outdated hardware! Such a shame.

Amiibo got it right, not only are the figures not required to play games and instead give you unique rewards, but they're also well produced and are of characters people already care about and are willing to buy.

As someone who bought skylanders today and has over 350 unique skylanders figures, it is always interesting to see people talk about skylanders who don’t know much about it (They didn’t get worse and worse if the 4th game is generally known as the best. Yes, I know a lot of people love giants and I do too)

Funny thing about Disney Infinity, they were eventually gonna make another update so that the player can play through an official story mode in wich you can use any and all figurenes without restriction. Because of poor sales, they obviously halted all plans.

My friends dad was a head designer on the original sky landers so it was really sad for me to see it end❤it will live in our hearts

SKYLANDERS WAS A CHILDHOOD TO ME! Every week on Friday if I had all As Bs and Cs my dad would take me to GameStop or Walmart to Pick one out! I played all games and everytime on my birthday if I got toys r us birthday money I would spend a crap ton of money on Skylanders. After seeing this video I went in my basement to look at my old stuff and I actually found ALLLLL of them! There are a ton and I am still yet to go through every single one. Thanks for reminding me about this! I totally forgot these things even existed! 😂

Imaginators was peak as a 12 year old playing on the Xbox after playing all of the others on Wii. The ability to create my own skylander after growing up wanting to be one was amazing. loved customizing my Own on the iOS app too.

My friend was longing for nostalgia the past week so he invited me and my brother over to his house and we played sky landers like every day. It was honestly amazing and we had a great time. I can see why it failed but it was amazing to come back to it all these years later!

Hopefully Microsoft does something with sky landers since their gonna own them soon

Starlink was the best toys to life, you could take parts off and put other on mid game move the weapons of your actual toy while you fly in game to shoot behind you

Video Request: “Why is Hugo so afraid of sheep?” Everyone knows that Hugo is afraid of sheep, but why? Well, I think it has something to do with Sheep Creep. You see back before Sheep Creep became a villain: He was amazing, he could eat up to +900 billion yards of grass in a second, he first sheep ever to invent cork-shooters that fire peanut butter, and is loved by all the sheep in Skylands that is until an 8-year old Hugo came and took all the love. So in a fit of jealousy, he shaves himself and hides it in Hugo’s draw to frame him, which worked and 100% of the witnesses believed him. (With the 99% being all of the sheep, and the 1% being Eruptor which would explain why he was so annoyed by Hugo.) This results in Sheep Creep leading a rebellion which of course fails and is sent to Cloudcracker Prison. Yet despite this, Hugo (whose parents were the only two casualties, and adopted by Eon) has been having nightmares of sheep ever since. Thus, the once biggest sheep fan is now the tragic traumatized coward with sheep phobia.

The LEGO one was awsome because you could actually play with them instead of them just being a statue and not being able to play

You forgot Starlink, the game that attempted to revive the genre and do it correctly You could buy physical ships, weapons and characters, or you could buy them digital instead, allowing you to have whatever you want without searching every Walmart

The quality of skylanders was a rollercoaster SSA, Giants, and Swap Force were god tier, then trap team came out, Then Superchargers fixed it (story wise, not level goal wise) then imaginators shot skylanders in the heartbreaker

I got in to LEGO Dimensions secondhand, years after it was discontinued. I have a sizeable collection thanks to a few local sellers in my area, and I found the Wii U starter pack at a Ross store for $15. I think its business model was the best of the main three TTL players: one starter pack and constant updates every year.

Oh I LOVED Skylanders. Such a cool concept. The original and Giants were both awesome but then yeah sadly the further installments were much weaker plus they just kept using Kaos as the villain over and over it got dull. But I have fond memories fighting with Slam Bam, Trigger Happy, and Tree Rex

I used to have both disney infinity and skylanders. For some reason, i was able to bond more with infinity than with skylanders. For example, the 3.0 version had interplanetary transportation, very good scenarios, incredible mechanics and very good graphics. And the concept was really well studied in all 3 games: 2 slots of characters for players 1 and 2, and a 3rd slot for the map/storyline. Several storylines, several characters and repeat for all the games. There was even a sandbox where you could use the items ot missions you passed to your heart's content!

Anyone remember the UBFunkeys? Servers for that shut down a looong time ago but they were fun while they lasted.

I owned the first Skylanders but never opened it but I was lowkey obsessed with Disney Infinity while it was around. When they first announced Amiibos I thought that you actually played as them and they would be like playing versions of the fighters you could level up over time and I still think that you should be able to like, play as the Amiibos somehow someday in some game

The worst thing about Lego dimensions was that some people, like me, got to a point in to game were the was a glitch that just crashed the game every time you got to a specific point, meaning I never got to finish it.

I still have a bigass collection of Skylanders. I think my rarest one is probably Scratch, I remember when she was in-stores and I fell in love and just _had_ to have her. I also remember unpackaging her and racing upstairs to my Wii to try her out. I still have her ofc and even though I haven’t played in years, I keep her around my workspace for good luck (since luck is kind of her thing) 💕

I still remember when I used to go to my friends house and play skylanders every single day until his xbox did not work anymore and we stopped playing. It was a very sad day.

In some alternate universe skylanders didnt kill the category by trying to force people to constantly buy new figures and by now there's a game that combines the idea of connectable figures like swap force/ starlink with the idea of blind boxes... and it's awesome

I still speedrun and play Skylanders normally to this day, however when Skylanders Swap-Force released, I kinda lost interest cus I was playing on a Wii. Also ever sense Vicarious Visions started making skylanders games along Toys For Bob, everything went downhill. I am finally collecting skylanders again because I can actually afford it now, and if anyone needs to get rid of their skylanders, let me know, I will give them a good home.

Amiibos were the best implementation because they were made by the company that made the video game console (Nintendo) so the Amiibo support was baked into the console/controller besides the original 3DS that used an add-on for Amiibo support (eventually Skylanders would just use the NFC baked into the Nintendo Switch controller). With Amiibo, they were optional add-ons to a lot of different Nintendo games and would unlock certain features in games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros. I like how Amiibos weren't needed to get the full experience out of any Nintendo game but were more so a cool collector's piece for any Nintendo fan. Amiibos are best put as Nintendo merch that can also be used in-game. Also, I like how Nintendo put Mii in the name of Amiibo 😂.

I grew up on sky landers and Disney infinity. It’s truly sad to see the sky landers franchise go to the wayside and Disney infinity shut down, although realistically the games were cash grabs and they would’ve been better fit to have them be unlockable characters

As a person who owns both Lego dimensions and Disney infinity, I can confirm I have skylanders giants, swap force, and trap team, as well as Disney infinity 2.0 and 3.0 and Lego dimensions for ps3

The main reason I though would have been the closing of Toys R Us, considering how closely tied skylanders was with the store.

It failed because of the oversaturation combined with the price tags, and the novely of "toys to life" had faded by 2016, so it didnt even feel like you got anything out of it anymore.

Honestly if disney were to announce a 4.0 i feel like the sheer shock and suprise would be close to breaking the internet

I got that’s game for 5$ and five below in 2015 someone returned the game there even tho they did have the game to begin with but because back then the highest price they had was 5$ I got it for one heck of a discount. Rip sky landers

This brought back the memory of one of my young Christmas’s, I got my own Xbox and Lego dimensions for it. After every one left I spent 3 hours playing Lego dimensions just to not be able to escape the turtorial and never play it again

My husband still loves the Skylanders games and is introducing it to our daughter. We’re only collecting up to the fourth game (trap team) though and are keeping it to only one verse of each character since the later versions work on the newer games.

As much as I didn’t care for toys to life as a kid aside from amiibo. I really do miss that era of walking into Walmart and having something interesting to go look at.

The two major differences that separated amibo from the competition were their excellent build quality and the expansive compatibility across multiple games. Lego Dimensions came close by including actual Lego sets instead of figurines, but flopped because it was just better to buy a standard Lego set.

I have: A meter long shelf of Disney infinity figurines. Three bags of sky landers figurines with all the swap force ones wearing the wrong bottom.

Skylanders was my favourite game growing up, but it did cost a lot to get the other characters and the traps and imagination crystals. The only time we could’ve gotten skylander stuff was if me and my brother were really good on the car ride to the store and really good in the store as well. If we were both really good, we would each gotten to choose 1 to 2 characters, but if one of us didn’t want to get anymore, then the other would just get to pick between 2. There was one time where I had a really bad day at school and my dad took me and my little brother to this gaming store. My dad let me pick out three skylanders to get while my brother got a wrestling game since he was “too cool” for skylanders That really made me feel better, especially since the characters I gotten had really cool powers and were super badass!

Im still shocked amiibo is the only one standing, when I was little I thought they were so lame because they didn't have a specific game to play them in, and now that the others are gone amiibo have put a bandaid over a bullet wound
