Why Ukraine matters so much to Russia's Putin

For Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Ukraine is much more than NATO's potential expansion eastward.
The fall of the Soviet Union was a huge setback for Moscow and its influence, and the loss of Ukraine was particularly tough pill to swallow.
Thus far, Ukraine has largely rejected Putin's attempts to bring the former Soviet republic back into Russia's orbit, despite his view that they share a "single historic and spiritual space".
Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith explains why Ukraine matters so much to Putin.

"We were surprised when Russia moved in to Syria" ... Meanwhile America invading countries doesn't surprise anyone.. Think about that.
@bluelotus.society

Russia's build-up around Ukraine was no surprise to anyone. given Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014 plus their ongoing military support for the separatist forces in the Donbass, and their 2008 invasion of Georgia, which are just continuations of Soviet foreign policy and expansionism. America and China also have invaded their neighbors in recent times, so it doesn't come as a surprise when America invades some Arabic-speaking country or when China invades Taiwan (given the CCP's ongoing war with the Republic of China, their annexation of Tibet, and their invasion of Vietnam in the 1980s.

I`m a Japanese national, and I do not know much about the Russo-Ukrainian relatioship and whether Putin`s claim that Ukraine is an intergral part of the Russian territory or not. But even if Russia`s territorial right over Unkaine is valid, Putin should think why Ukrainian people prefer to join NATO rather than the Russian rule. And he should also ponder why former Warsaw Pact nations decided to join NATO. People in those countries still remember that their life under the rule of the Soviet Union was destitute and oppressive. It is quite a matter of course that many Ukrainian people say no to Russia. Unless Russia guaranteed affluent life and democracy, Russia`s claim of her territorial right would be invalid.

You're 100% correct. Ukrainians were always a distinct people, even during the Soviet-era when central leadership tried and failed to create a single, unified culture. Modern Russia has a problem of pride because it is almost entirely run by former officials of the Soviet-era. There is a feeling among these elites that Russia has lost face post-1989 and deserves to enjoy superpower status once more. Ukraine was a critical part of the Soviet Union's success with their industrial capacity, tech R&D, and arms industry. Like Kazakhstan (with their Baikonur Cosmodrome), Ukraine was and remains viewed by Russian elites as critical to the reemergence of Russia as a superpower.

Where in the world is is affluence guaranteed? The majority of people in western countries are at best, lower middle class. The problem that Russia has is that even though NATO repeatedly said it would restrict expansion towards Russia, they continue to do so in violation of many arrangements. Russia simply cannot tolerate Ukraine becoming a hostile nation sitting right on its border. NATO (American) aggression is intolerable to a country like Russia which has endured major wars and invasions of the last few centuries. America would not tolerate a hostile Mexico as exemplified in the Cuban missile crisis.

Russia was a Union republic like Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, etc.

Cmon, the russian propaganda and govermnet "scary story tales" about the "scary west" and "scary NATO" are completely busted, cause everyone knows, that NATO members are not so stupid to start WW3 (Nuclear war) they already had their NATO bases on the borders, so the problem is not with NATO, but with Ukraine trying to become a democratic and succesfull state in comparison with Russia. they have spend so much money on their military, instead of developing their infrastructure, that could have make all the people of russia super successful and super rich, but no, lets become a bully and make comrades by force, why? cause we can :)

I must remind you that Russia agreed to assure Ukraine's security and accept its borders in return for give up their nukes (Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances ). "NATO expanding" - independent countries asked NATO to join it, they weren't forced to do so. And they willingly did so because of bad history of relationships with Russia and because of fear the history might repeat again (Poland, Lithuania, Czech Republic, Slovakia etc.). Russia in opposed to NATO is physically and forcefully expanding its territory by moving its army into an independent country. And ironically by doing so they're moving their borders closer to territories of NATO's members.

@ik7584
@ik7584 2 года назад
@@Jakezillagfw What you call Eastern Ukraine, it was part of Russia before the 1917 Revolution. It was part of Russia for at least a thousand years. Lenin and his comrades Bolsheviks took that territory from Russia and declared it part of Ukraine. Here is why Bolsheviks did that: in 1917, Ukraine was 100 percent agrarian. According to Marxist theory, revolutions were done by proletariat, not farmers. Russia's territory east of Ukraine was heavily industrialized then. So, Lenin "transferred" it to Ukraine, along with all the Russians who lived there - so that Lenin could say that there was proletariat in Ukraine. If you are an anti-communist, and you agree that everything that communists did in Russia and the Soviet Union has to be undone, then you have to demand that Bolsheviks' transfer of Russian territories to Ukraine for the sake of supporting ideology of communistic revolution has to be undone as well.

And people repeating like to feel some kind of power when they say it applies to them and their time-line. This is what makes religion and it's followers so dangerous. They believe they are righteous because some fairytale says they are according to their interpretation. If the truth were written in clear easy to understand versus then nobody could twist it to their own narrative. The Bible is not clear interpretation and creates more wars. Ukraine is not of concern to Putin. Putin's only concern is how to stay in power

To all the people freaking out & screaming at Russia do you think if Canada wanted to join some Chinese alliance would US be down with it? Now now we are talking about the same US who wanted to ban TikTok just because it was a Chinese app & do you think USA in all likelihood ever let one of it's boarding country & not to mention closest ally be a part of what it considers as an adversary? Once again we're talking about the same countries who placed nukes at turkey to keep Soviet union at check but when soviets did the same they almost started world war three(cuban missile crisis)
