Why Use A No-Till Drill In Tilled Ground? | KUHN 9400NT

Even though the KUHN 9400NT is a no-till drill, that still means we can use it in tilled ground. It gives us the option to no-till in certain situations to help improve any kind of stand we put in no-till, and is especially useful for things like reseeding that we have done to improve previous year's stands.

Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Hi Ryan! Great video, just love the quality of your videos! Great lesson on hand signals, I hope some people hear ya! I don't drive my tractor on the road, but I do have old cars. Last summer I was driving my 1926 Ford Model T, used a hand signal for a left turn into a parking lot and the guy coming at me stopped along side of me to ask me "what do you want?" while the guy behind him was laying on his horn. Good explanation at beginning of signals and use of hand signals. I find when behind farm machinery the average person may not be looking for directionals in the spots they expect them to be. Some tractors have so many lights flashing they get caught up in what’s what. Some have turn signals up on top and others have them more down by the wheels. Maybe a video idea on following farm machinery and what to watch out for and signs people could follow on when a tractor is allowing you to see better and pass vs moving right to make a left hand turn. Just a thought. Great video once again. Stay safe!

The mice will eat also emptied metering chambers. They like to make their own openings. If you leave the metering chamber valves down for the winter the mice do not eat the parts. Usually there is a central lever to open and close the valves below the metering rollers.

IT's real good you re did your water ways, great time to do it in spring, that rain tonight or last night should help. That's cool you hauled away the muck with a kuhn. Then planted in the same compost with a Kuhn seeder. Both pieces were more efficient for you. :) after you grow and cut have the hay/grass tested.

I am glad you talked about the left hand turn. Years ago I was turning left into my eighty when a car tried to pass at the last second. He hit my front tire turning it and busting the linkage plus smashed my steps. Luckily no one was hurt but the dealer had to pick the tractor up because it couldn’t be driven. I have several other close calls over the years.

wonder if that company that sold you the grass would appreciate the chance to improve their bag design to limit the junk in their bags. Another great video Ryan, and looking forward to more!
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 года назад
They should because IF that junk doesn't plug up the meter by wrapping around the fluted feedcup, it'll almost certainly wad up in the seed tube and plug a seed tube. One time when I was drilling soybeans I was looking back at the drill and checking things out and saw beans raining down under the box. Went back and checked and turned out a piece of glass somehow made it through the cleaners and into the bag... it must've been in the machinery for a LONG TIME because the edges of it were worn off smooth, didn't cut anything, but somehow it ended up in the cleaned beans and in the box and went through the meter, but it dropped down into the opening of the drop hose and it wedged and plugged it off, beans backed up the funnel and started pouring out the back just behind the meter, raining down behind the drill opener. Good thing I was keeping a sharp eye on everything and caught it quickly. Later! OL J R :)

I see a couple other hand signals all the time, can you explain those as well LOL.... Here many folks seeding hay use a broadcast seeder and a roller or if they use a drill they will crisscross the rows for more coverage. One went way out there and had a company come in and hydroseed his 10 acre field!! $$$$$

That's a lot of ground to get seeded down into grass. After the last two very wet harvests, it will be good to keep more of your soil up on the contoured strips rather than running down an embankment.

I know when I would haul gravity box’s to the home farm it was scary. Older tractor no mirrors and couldn’t see behind over the gravity boxes. About an 8th mile out from making left hand turns I would slowly start moving over the center line and hope no one tried to pass. It worked thank God. Stay safe.
@farming4g
@farming4g 4 года назад
No-till disc drills have really good seed depth placement even at higher speeds. It's all dependent on how well the discs penetrate the ground and how much down pressure it can handle without putting uneccessary stress on the discs and gauge wheels. Softer ground, like your tilled areas, don't need much down pressure because the ground is so loose to begin with. No-till ground can vary from year to year depending on the weather with moisture and heat... some years like the current year we're having it doesn't need much pressure, other years like drought take a bit more.

Have you ever thought about using the turbo bucket trick with your shop vac? Just in case you don't know what it is. You run the house from the location you want to suck up from (seeds in no til drill in this case) into the top/ side at an steep angle (parallel to the ground). The hose to the shop vac goes into the top center vertically. It sucks up just like a normal shop vac but you can put it on, say, a 50 gallon drum. All the material you're removing goes into the turbo bucket as your shop vac stays empty and runs at max performance. Would be perfect for emptying seed from a drill or an Auger or cleaning out storage bins. Hope this helps IF you haven't heard of it. Good luck.

for seed catching, make a 5gal bucket into a trap, run a 2" piece of PVC up in through the bottom to about an inch below the top with an U of a trap on it so the seeds slide around, then bulkhead a connector for the hose on top and make a circular inset that's covered with hardware cloth. It'll let you get about 3.5 gal of seed out at a time. You can make the lid easy to unlatch or put a pour out down to the side with a cap on it. Most seeds should *never* be run through the hose of a shopvac, it can crack them and will rub off a lot of the seedcoat while blowing it into the air. Other option if you have a great shopvac is to use smooth hose, but using the trap will do the best job, that way any dust/shards/seedcoat will be in the trashbag of the vac. Cost ya maybe $15 to make.

If they try to pass 15' wide middle of the road they will do it in the ditch. Its better to just block the road than have a little car under the left set of duals .

Perhaps the answer to hand signals is not to rely on drivers understanding. Simply pull right as you slow and wait stopped until it is safe to turn right. Might take a bit more time but accidents will ruin your day. The answer to all these interactions is do change direction slowly. We know where we are going but you have to give unambiguous ques to other drivers.

How much does a bag of seed cost, 200 per bag or more?
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 года назад
Depends on the seed... I just bought a bag of haygrazer for $30 for a 50 lb bag... South Sask Farmer said his canola is like $750 for a 50 lb bag. Most row crops seed costs anywhere from $250-350/bag, or more, particularly for GMO's. Non-GMO is quite a bit cheaper, or at least it used to be... maybe now not so much, since the seed companies have REALLY cut back on non-GMO options, and charge more for it than they used to so that seed costs for GMO seeds are "more attractive" than cheaper alternatives that aren't THAT much cheaper anymore... I'm assuming it could drill beans, as long as it has the ability to swap parts to handle the larger seeds and ability to block off seed tubes to be able to have larger row spacing. We've been seeding beans with a Case SDX no-till drill instead of a planter for 10 years, the only thing that has to be swapped is the seed roller on grain cart to handle the larger bean seeds, and block off seed tubes to get larger row spacing if wanting that option (going from 7.5" to 15" spacing). Instead of going by seeds/acre like a planter, need to go by weight per acre instead.

I live in a small town in Florida I was headed west on the main highway through my town which would be the right lane I was within feet of the road that I had to turn on which was a left hand turn I was in the left-hand Lane and a vehicle passed me how they did not hit me I don't know and they also will pass you on your passenger side which is the shoulder of the road because they don't want to wait so what you had was a idiot in a vehicle I doubt it had anything to do with you showing you were turning
