As from Sweden this is nothing new here. We use insulation in walls for a very long time. But if you spent time and money insulationg the walls for sound profing, you should also invest in better doors aswell so sound woont sneak throu. Same with windows. You get even better sound profing using metall studs. Then you will have insulation basicly butted together, and the wall will almost be 100% full of insulation. Caulking all edges and have rubber seals on the sylls
Clearly you don't understand a logarithmic scale. 40 dB is four orders of magnitude quieter. This whole video makes me want to scream. I love Kyle and his approach, but the uniformed BS shilling needs to stop, it's ridiculous.
Doubling the intensity of a sound increases its intensity level by 3 decibels. Increasing the intensity of a sound by 10x increases its intensity level by 10 decibels. 100x - 20 decibels. That's all physical and measurable. Hearing complicates the story. "Loudness" levels vary with frequency. And number of sound sources also influences the subjective feeling of "loudness". There won't be a quiz, no need to memorize - just throwing this out because decibels can be a confusing measurement. If you want, you can think of sound intensity in terms of watt per square meter. In his measurement of around 80 decibels, that's about 10^-4 watt per square meter. Reducing the measurement to around 40 decibels after the rockwool is a reduction in intensity to 10^-8 watt per square meter.
@@christopherhaak9824 They also test it open faced which is a completely unrealistic data point.. As soon as they sheet these walls, they will echo and carry sound as if the rockwool wasn't even there..
Chris, drywall will add echo in a room yes...what you gain from the safe and sound is transfer between the walls. between rooms. that is the important thing
Rockwool is good for sound dampening, but combind with the use of resilient channels before drywall would maximize it's benefits. It leaves a dual air pocket on each side of the wall which muffles sound even more and cuts down on vibration transfer from drywall through lumber when installed correctly.
Great product... used to design homes and we would use a "quiet" stud to decouple sound transfer from stud to drywall, insulate interior walls, and finally use double 5/8" drywall on one side of wall. Messes with door and window jamb thicknesses, but works amazing.
I did that on one of my shared walls between my office and theater room. From a cost standpoint, staggered stud wall, filled with fiberglass and double 5/8" type X or as I did it 5/8" OSB/GG/DW is a banger isolation technique with minimal cost..
mineral wool and fiberglass in a standard wall assembly have the same STC rating.. Do not fall for the cleaver marketing of safe and sound.. If you want real sound isolation you need clips and hats aka decoupling.. If you don't, just use unfaced fiberglass and it will do the same for less money...
Finally, a reply from someone who knows. I just loved the comment from the Rockwool guy that he didn't know the STC of a standard wall assembly. All of these assemblies have published STC ratings. Made the video look like a clown show.
@@srchubz Yes that is true and where 5/8" Type X double sheeted comes to play.. In thrid party testing a cavity with Rockwool or Fiberglass in a decoupled mass loaded assembly have the same STC rating.. So it does nothing to help by adding more expensive filler to said assembly.. They have a great marketing group, but the money saved not using it can be used on A237s or something similar to get real wall isolation..
Everyone should double stud walls with a 6" wide top and bottom plate and 2x4 staggered studs for each side of the wall, so the studs of one wall don't even touch the other side of the wall. then fill in the gaps with fiberglass or Rockwool. Going for an extra layer of drywall or just a thicker single layer of drywall is icing on the cake.
@@umeng2002 That is how I did my last home theater walls. A staggered stud wall assembly is a great way to partially decouple a wall. I even did it with my ceiling to decouple it from the floor system above.
I used 100mm rockwool in my walls for my workshop ,And If I put my table saw on which is a round 80db you cant even hear it when you go out side ,Or other tools like router table ,Its just amazing stuff and well worth in installing if you want to stop sound ..
30 years ago I installed drywall on metal resilient channels attached to the wall studs and ceiling joists (can’t remember the manufacturer) with fiberglass insulation in the walls and ceiling for a bedroom, a home office, and a multipurpose room in our basement. It works amazingly well. My only sound transmission between rooms and the floor above comes through the cold air returns. I imagine the rock wool would be even better.
I have an 85 year old house and recently remodeled one room in the attic suite. I used rock wool for all the walls and it’s absolutely 1000% quieter than the rest of the house. I love this stuff.
Now if you really want to deaden the sound above and beyond is also use sorbathane in the face of the studs. It’s a rubber that stops vibrations. You have to remember drywall in a drum face that vibrates and if to deaden the space inside stud bay along with the studs it really gets a quiet rooms
Hello Kyle! It's always interesting to see quality work keep it up! Is ecowool (recycled cellulose) used for insulation? It has the same advantages as foam (without seam insulation)
All the foams are just plastics and will burn like rocket fuel. Plus, thry have a high chance of off-gassing over time. Best to stick with natural materials wherever and whenever possible. Rockwool is an excellent choice for many reasons.
None of them obviously have had to crawl around or move it 10+ years after the fact. It traps in dust and makes a cloud everytime you touch it. As an electrician that has to when customers want service, this is the absolute worst insulation to have to work in.
Rockwool International was founded in 1909 under a different name and in 1937 they started the production of stone wool.. I would like Rockwool to invite you to visit their headquarters and research department.
Where are the cold air returns from this job? What did your team do with consideration for those? Was there something else the crew did for further sound dampening for the cavities for those returns if you did leave them open?
Really nice, but -- QUESTION -- My understanding is that the sound deadening would be higher WITHOUT the drywall and with Rockwool alone. Why? Because the hardness of drywall will reflect the sound wave before the softness of the Rockwool can absorb it. It is largely the soft nature vs hard nature of the surface that bounces the sound and makes it noisy vs quiet. Is that correct,?
It depends on the frequency, but yes. That is why you see people put up lightweight foam on the walls of their recording studios. Hard surfaces reflect the high frequencies. The extra mass in the wall helps with the lower frequencies.
We plan on using the safe and sound in our house every time we open a wall, it's getting out in. We used the regular fiberglass sound barrier stuff in our old home and that was still pretty good at cutting down the sound so I can only imagine using this stuff
I can only think of one downfall to this , now I would have to install an alarm system on the barn / shop because I wouldn't be able to hear the little thieves trying to break into it at night . As a side benefit I wouldn't wake up the wife when I shoot at the little thieves, depending on how big of a gun I use .
@@FJB2020 you're not paying attention, the alarm would go off in the house , I'm talking about being able to hear the peckerheads trying to break in . They tend to talk to each other while sneaking across the yard , most of them aren't smart enough to drive a vehicle with a muffler on it , let alone closing the doors quietly . Then they silhouette themselves in front of a white sliding door on the barn . They were smart enough to run when they heard the rifle cocking , just not smart enough to stay away . They came back three more times .
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 I am saying you are still going to hear them.. Adding rockwool in the wall without any additional decoupling or mass isn't going to do shiet.. PS I like to keep mine rock and roll so I can sneak up on em.. While the slam of a round entering the chamber and the breech closing does make them wish they wore the brown pants, I think taking them out and letting them experience the ground temp challenge is a better option..
There's definitely lots of benefits to using Rockwool. I think it's ability to slow the spread of fire is quite literally a life saver. I don't know how well it works, but I saw a method of using a 2x8 for bottom and top plates, and then using staggered 2x6's for the studs, so the drywall on either side of the wall isn't connected to the same studs. I think it may be used in studios? Obviously insulation is also used.
I think that's usually for exterior walls to give you a thermal break for insulation and heating reasons. Obviously if done internally it would reduce noise even further but that's pretty extreme.
I have seem this set up in a common interior wall dividing a side by side duplex construction. We used 2 x 4 studs with 2 x 6 plates and insulation woven around the studs
I work in a building with metal studs and no insulation (and probably the cheapest, thinnest drywall possible) and I promise...I can hear phone conversation of an office two doors down. We have A LOT of trouble with conference rooms being able to be overheard and use a TON of white noise machines! Wish everyone was as conscientious as Kyle & Greg! On a house this size, what's the increased cost for adding the S&S in the walls?
Where I live, a 24" bag is 121 dollars and does 67 square feet, Canadian dollars. So to do just the ceiling in the house I'm renovating, is going to cost me 1400 in the rockwool alone. And another 1400 in drywall. It's not terrible.. but considering it's only 675square feet of house..it's a bit up there.
@@TobiasKryze I see your point, but considering you would have been doing the drywall anyway, the only real increased cost is the rockwool itself and possibly the labor to install it. Idk, $1400 to have peace & quiet for the lifetime of the building would prob be worth it to me!
Thoughts & suggestions on Post frame building in Florida no one does it here, that i can fine... I guess you guys are pretty exclusive in what you do regardless. But, I really seriously want to build a post frame house & just don't care for the metal beams etc.
I'm very interested in the noise comfort. Namely escaping dogs barking. Is there any literature on Rockwool in regards to escaping a neighborhood 'dog pound'?
Remember that insulation has heat storage capacity. Rockwool is pretty good at this. Only wood fiber insulation and cellulose insulation are better at heat storage. We are entering an energy crisis. Think passively, fill up all cavities with insulation and make sure that the outer wall, roof transitions and penetrations are completely wind and airtight. These guys have understood very important principles. I must honestly admit that I have been shocked at how bad Americans and Canadians are at insulation, wind barrier and vapor barrier.
Question, it’s going to sound crazy. But I am allergic to wool clothing. Would that be the same rule apply to this product? I am hoping not. We have a up coming project and I would love to use this product for it.
Great sound deadening and insulation but nobody thought to ask the electrician about the electrical installation and the impact this has on what cable, how big the cable needs to be etc. I can see the conduit used but thermal insulation absolutely has a detrimental effect on cables under load

Great product ! We always put in SOLID CORE interior doors in remodeling projects. Unbelievable difference in sound deadening plus a quality door that will close and latch without having to push it closed. And, this Rockwool would go very well with the solid door improvement...too bad the local building codes don't require it...we'd all be better off.
Building codes are bare minimums. A lot of builders will only build to the bare minimum. Its up to good builders and good owners to educate themselves and others on how to be better than the bare minimum.

Some building code requirements are rather dumb and expensive all while they ignore better ideas to bring up the minimum standards for efficiency in residential buildings such as this product/idea. There are all kinds of better methods yet they don't address them. My favorite approved building code is allowing over the stove exhaust fans to be "recirculating" designs vs. vented outside. Totally worthless !
@@Garth2011 I'll definitely agree with you on all of that. I'm not in the building industry I'm a machinist. So i don't know building codes that much but i do know osha pretty well and they're pretty similar. There are lots of things osha does or has done that are for employees benefit. But on the same token osha can be really good at ckosing businesses and putting people out of work. There's so many stupid things we deal with in our industry or that I've heard about from others. A buddy of mine bought a pickup that used to be used by the railroad. Every door has a pinch warning sticker next to the door jam. I saw that an was like are you freaking kidding me...
@@95dodgev10 Agreed...OSHA considers everyone has no common sense therefore, the machines or equipment need to have it built into them. They figure that everything in the industry should be in a setting for the unexperienced worker ! Like those faucets in the bathrooms that will not allow the hot water to get over a certain temp to protect the dummy using it.
I love how you guys enjoy 20 year old building practices here on the other side of the pond :) I get why it is like that. Your labor cost is about 3x. Our practices takes way more time to build. House gets built in about 4-6 months form soil to living...
