@@SerialSleeper30 A little bit of A and a little bit of B. E-sports and competitive online games are massively more stressing. Triple A single player, coop games are way easier. I think achievements can make games more stressing too as one chases for that 100% even when the fun of the game is long gone. I dunno, it feels like games have diverged in widely different ways and there's less interest in making more balanced and fun experiences anymore.
@katokianimation
@katokianimation Месяц назад
@@SerialSleeper30old games weren't that hard. The gamers of current times are entitled to feel like a winner, no matter what, and cry about difficulty whenever they hit a wall. Tthey rather want interactive movies that reward the effort and the time they put into the game, than practicing untill they get good enough to overcome any challange. Supermario, Castlevania, Contra, Megaman, Ducktales, (Kirby😂) are hard games if you can't play them. Sure. But even first graders could beat thoose games in the 80s and 90s. i don't belive they were special. I think gaming went from playing chess to playing checkers. You want climb a mountain for 20 minutes to get a killer sword. You don't want to spend 20 minutes to learn how to beat the final boss with the same crappy sword you got at the beggining of the game.

It’s funny you mention 2015 because when I talk about mainstream film, tv series and video games going stale I always reference pre and post 2015. There certainly was a massive shift at that time to a more corporate copy and paste assembly line safe product. I think the days of true innovation are gone. I do understand the magic of youth is gone for myself and that does play a large role, but I can’t help but notice the extreme dip in quality across all forms of media in today’s world

People often revisit older games because they were made better and with more passion. Devs wanted you to not only buy their game, but to enjoy it. Although there was no DLC, games felt full and complete, even with the occasional bug/glitch. Half the time, bugs/glitches were hilarious and added to the entertainment value, without really getting in the way. Devs worked to make game mechanics more enjoyable and fun. When you got the product, it was usually in the way they intended, or at the very least, something close to that. Stories were much better, and compensated for less advanced graphics (which weren't necessarily unpleasant to look at in the first place) When you returned to pick up a sequel in a franchise, it was because the devs earned it. You trusted their product, and weren't anticipating updates or features that would be added in at a later time.

Like I’ve stated, video game companies are filled with employees that are not gamers but PC political activists trying to push ideology. Employees are hired based off of ideology & Diversity quotas instead of skill & talent. Compare the development team of previous studios to their modern versions & tell me the difference. I’ll give you a few. Colored hair, fat women, no nerds that obviously play D&D / Warcraft, lack of people that stay up for days hunting for an achievement or beating a certain raid. Everything in the modern era, every single company of entertainment has been taken over by PC SJW Leftists & focus on only pushing a ideology / message instead of producing quality content. Nerds that are passionate about creating video games are not allowed to work at the mainstream video games companies anymore, this is why they venture off to create new studios ( Indie companies ) & this is why people love their product more because it’s created by people just like them, gamers. Same thing as movies & TV shows, nerds, the people who created these works of art, have been kicked out of the worlds that they created & have been replaced by PC leftists pushing feminism & whatever else. Simple. As. That.

The issue isn't so much "greed" as backwards thinking. Before, companies made games with quality because they hoped it would lead people to buy them. Now, companies make games with compulsion loops, shallow pandering, alleged "mass appeal", trend chasing, and addiction mechanics because they know it makes money-- quality be damned. EDIT: People keep commenting that I literally described greed. I disagree since greed is a more destructive method in my opinion, but I understand that it "greed" subject to interpretation. Some games have Microtransactions without being greedy (ex. Fortnite since most are cosmetics which make no impact). Some trend chase and make something better (ex. Red Undead Nightmare cashing in on the Zombie craze in a memorable DLC). Heck, Call of Duty used to do this when their yearly releases were still good yet this still spat our games to rake in a fortune (World at War, Modern Warfare, Black Ops, MW2). You can make a good product and be greedy, but there is a difference between making a good product and shoving it down people's throats (Call of Duty) or getting overambitious (Ex. Killzone trying to be a Halo-killer and poach fans rather than just co-exist like COD and Battlefield) and making expensive garbage that explicitly causes mental harm while delivering nothing (ex. Doom Eternal). At least games like Fortnite bring you in for the fun and events, but get you to stay for the season's pass. Games like FIFA 2021 offer nothing new, but expect you to pay again for players you already had in FIFA 2020.

I always thought that I grew out of games because they used to be fun, until I realised 'why' they were fun. There was never any stress when it came to playing those games, you just loaded up and you had everything you needed to make your own fun, whether it was a single player or online game. The trend I'm seeing in games now is that you're not given the opportunity to actually have fun, it's artificially generated, boring busy work, grinding, whatever you want to call it, it's not enjoyable to work virtually and in real life. And don't get me started with online.. Unless you're balls to the wall sweating in every multiplayer game that I've played recently, where everyone wants to be the next eSports legend. The social aspect of lobbies have faded from existence, no one ever speaks in matches and it feels like you're playing with bots half the time, if anything you probably are considering how many recent titles have fallen off. It's a shame that gaming has turned into an opportunity for corporate greed, they see games as a product to sell rather than an experience to be cherished and remembered.

I found your video very refreshing to know I'm not alone here. I won't play or participate in any pay to play games. Been there, done that, still pissed off over how much money I wasted before I realized I had been taken advantage of... robbed. I won't buy any early access bull shit. It's like a teacher letting a kid turn in half their assignment and giving them an A as their final grade because they gave their word they'd finish the assignment. That ain't how the real world works sweetheart. I especially won't charge any more for my games than I would pay myself. If the game doesn't suck it'll pay for whatever amount of work I put into it. If I come out with DLC for a game already released, then all previous owners of the game will get it for free as a thank you for funding me to get that far... and here, enjoy some bonus content. Then I'll increase the price appropriately for whoever else is buying it for the first time, and they'll get whatever bonus content thereafter free as well. If the game is actually that good, plenty of new people will buy it, and pay an increased price, that matches the value of the actual game. Call me old fashioned. I call it having class. Old games were made for gamers. New games cost 10x more and it's too risky to try new things or come off the path of hand holding the non-gamer, who is needed because the gaming community alone can't generate enough revenue. I played halo 2 for the first time recently. It's great, but the reason its great is entirely because I'm a gamer. I'm challenging myself to play at the highest difficulty, making trick kills and trying to be a baller master chief. Non gamers won't do this, and they won't have fun. The rise of esports makes people approach and analyze games seriously. The rise of speedrunning makes people more care about bugs and exploits and most optimal repeatable routes. And of course there the gacha games that designed to give same satisfaction and addiction as gambling. With new games from established studios now built literally with one or more those aspects, no wonder fun is never a priority when designing one anymore. And so games that looked fun is from indies, which as the video already said, filled with bugs, early access shit, unoptimized as hell, and most of the time broken promises. A new release that actually good game with acceptable bugs today is really very rare and should be cherished.

It seems your argument is the following: (P1) _If people play games the way I prefer to, then people have the most fun that can be had playing games._ (P2) _People don't play games the way I prefer to._ (C) _Therefore, people don't have the most fun that can be has playing games._ This runs contrary to my experience because I haven't enjoyed frenetic _shoot 'em up_ styles of play for at least 14 years (I say because GTA IV happens to be the earliest game I remember playing _like a machine,_ as you say). As far back as I can remember, it's been the _guns blazing_ style of play you refer to that has always detracted from the fun of playing with and against others, in my case. With all that said, I still find that games used to be a lot more fun. That's either a result of my disposition with respect to playing games changing, or it's a result of games actually being less fun, in general.

I think people have to remember that 10 years ago, you didn’t have massive publishers. Video games were still a very new market so both publishers and devs had to make their games actually enjoyable if they wanted any hope of sales. Back in 2001, nobody knew Halo would eventually become this massive iconic franchise. Back then, it was finically risk for Microsoft to back, as was their brand new Xbox console. Even CoD MW back in 2008. Sure CoD had a few games out, but no one expected that would be the game to rewrite the FPS industry. Instead you had publishers giving the devs the financial resources they needed to make the best games possible, and then cross their fingers that people actually enjoyed those games. Now these companies ones have grown into billion dollar corporations that can easily ride the coattails of massive franchises. These publishers are so large, it Doesnt matter they keep putting out flop after flop after flop. Just look at EA. From Anthem to BF 2, the Battlefield games to everything wrong with FIFA. EA hasn’t had a decent game in YEARS yet it is still massively profitable. Sadly making a bad game Doesnt put a dent in the corporations sales anymore, but also gamers won’t wise up and stop purchasing new games. Everyone knows how dogshit EA is, yet why do so many people buy their new games at $60+ when they know it will be broken and riddled with micro transactions?

What happened to Gears is tragic. The original trilogy told a hard, gritty, and surprisingly emotional story of the realties of war. The new Gears is a joke, and I mean that literally. It’s like the Marvelfication of the super hero genre but worse. Nothing felt serious. I’m probably over exaggerating, but every bit of dialogue between the characters felt like a battle of quips and cheap one liners, and if there ever was a serious moment, the new characters would be back to cracking jokes in the next mission. I think its more the 'gaming as a service' mindset. Your not supposed to play a game, finish it, and put it in your book case for the next go round in a year or two. No, now your supposed to login every day to get your quests (I don't care if its called that in other genres, playing 5 matchmade games or doing an npc a favor its the same thing when your aim is some ingame currency), buy the season passes every four months, not to mention pimp out your character with the latest $14.99 fashion accesory. In short a game -- a single game when we've never had more of them is supposed to be what you do, your hobby and part of your lifestyle. Obviously the point of it all is money, and thats not a bad thing. I'm a developer too, and I'd never code the stuff for work that I do If I wasn't paid to do it. The problem is the extent. In order to suck $200 dollars out of you in the span of eighteen months, their incentivized to leave the core experience lacking and lock content which in an earlier generation would have been getting crammed in to the last minute behind paywalls they're gonna hit you with later. The fix is simple if impossible, people need to quit buying lootboxes, and season passes, etc etc.

To your point on greed: The same things happened in the film industry. In the beginning, films were passion projects, made to express the filmmakers' ideas. That was the only thing pressing the technology forward, the want to entertain the audience. Very quickly, studios realized it made a lot of money, and they wanted the monetary payoff without the creative effort. Unfortunately for them, it doesn't work that way. There's something to be said for how the culture of gaming has changed due to technology. Back in the early 2000's, games were designed for their market - mostly teen and young adult males that may or may not have internet access. Without the ubiquitous internet access we all enjoy today, devs can't patch games regularly after release. Therefore, devs had to release games with all of their most glaring problems already fixed by collaborating with quality assurance teams. Today, *people complaining online* are effectively the quality assurance teams of old. Microtransactions as a business model, without ubiquitous internet access, wasn't feasible back then either. Back when, it just-so-happened that releasing a fun game on day 1 was the *only* way to ensure a game would be financially successful. We can't assume games will be fun anymore by seeing a trailer and a gameplay demo at E3 like we used to. Like it always has been and always will be, *players* need to show publishers and developers what kinds of games make money by being selective with their purchases. When you give somebody cash for trash over and over, they *will* keep selling you trash.

There were games that were released with bugs back then. Just there was no way to patch the game you bought. If you bought a game with a bug that was so serious that is made the game unplayable or whatever you were basically screwed. If you opened the package, you couldn't get a refund. All you could do is exchange it for the same buggy broken game. But what you would most likely have to do is wait for the new revision of the game to get released. They didn't talk about this much back then. Especially in the 90's. So, you would just be stuck with a game you can't play that you paid for. There was no Steam so you couldn't request a refund. Developers and publishers didn't really do much to fix the mistake either. If you still had the receipt from the purchase you might be able to get a refund if you shipped the game and receipt off to whatever address was being used that is if anyone was willing to do this and it's not likely they would. You could get patches for PC games in the mid to late 90's I believe.

Just wish it happened more often cause it's getting to the point it doesn't justify building a high end rig or even spending almost a grand now on a console anymore. With rereleases, remasters, reboots, sequels that miss the mark or could have just been a DLC itself, everything needing seasons passes and just the lack of trying to hide the grind factor anymore. Not even getting into loot boxes and real money currencies. I definitely think it's an age thing, but not necessarily because we're aging, we've just played way more video games than we had when we were younger so that inevitably leads us to not have as many novel experiences when playing them. A lot of video games ARE similar because some mechanics just work and/or are intuitive, so the majority follow suit. When 3D games were first coming out there was a lot of experimentation because it was new technology, but since the PS1/PS2 days 3D has pretty much become the norm without much room to grow. Personally, I think the next big avenue for change in video games is VR, we're just not quite there yet.

It feels hard picking up new multiplayer games that I can enjoy because it's either a really competitive enviroment (even in the casual mode) or the community just isn't welcoming to people who are new to the game. Xbox sux, I used to say in middle school. I was the only one cheering for the gamecube. Thenthere was the PC master race guy.

100% correct. Once they figured out how to monetize within the game with micro transactions, packs, etc, it became a vicious cycle that remains unbroken. That's all that matters to them. Get the game out regardless of the state of it. We'll make money off of micro transactions and half heartedly fix the issues

Sadly people are buying them, and the companies are making the money. I wish people would stop buying these things.

What changed ? We decided to treat games with more focus than our jobs, basically turning them into jobs we pay for. We are as guilty as designers and publishers. But, no. There's no way it can be also on us, right ? Always someone else's fault

I'm glad someone was able to put this into words for me. I couldn't figure out these past few years if I grew out of a lot of gaming because I got older, or because games weren't as good as when I was a kid/teenager. The only time I ever felt that same magic of gaming were I was so immersed and played for hours on end was when I was in college and Kingdom Come Deliverance came out. A historical medieval free roam RPG made by really passionate devs.

I remember bringing this up in some Xbox forums that the Gears of War games were boring. They had pretty graphics but the game was so boring and I got roasted for it

I watched Call of Duty destroy gaming in the early 2010's. Now I'm watching streamers and "esports" (so fucking dumb) do it again.

Yeah I believe that was the beginning of the end. After Black Ops 2, CoD became the shepered leading the herd of the other AAA corporations to greed. Don't get me wrong, I still had fun even up until recently (last year was the last time I played) with games, but it was never the same. I think maybe a part of it is that a lot of us have played 1000s and 1000s of hours of games of all varieties and so we have experienced all that gaming has to offer, and it became stale.

if I may ask - how did Call of Duty destroy gaming in the early 2010's?

@@Stephen7764. Remember the GFuel promos and colalbs at the beginning of Modern Warfare 3's marketing juggernaut? Slowly and slowly applying MTs post Black Ops 2? The former point was one of the main reasons why streaming and esports culture was born

@@MikoyanGurevichMiG21 I love the idea of people competing in video games, but the game itself shouldn't be solely designed around being an "esports title." Just look Counter-Strike. It's an incredibly popular "esport," but it wasn't designed to be one. It's a genuinely fun game and that's why it's found so much success.
