No matter how you see it, some parts of Vietnam really do resemble China, even though that connection goes way back. Indirectly, all of that influences the culture, DNA, and other stuff....

According to history, Vietnam was under direct Chinese rule for approximately 1000 years. This period is often referred to as "Bắc thuộc" in Vietnamese history. The first period of Chinese rule began in 111 BC and lasted until 939 AD. There were subsequent periods of Chinese rule as well, but the overall period of direct Chinese domination spanned roughly a millennium.
