Why Violin Bows Are So Expensive | So Expensive

In 2017, a single violin bow sold at auction for $690,000. You can buy a beginner's bow for less than $50, but a top-rate professional bow can often cost thousands of dollars. A bow like this is completely handcrafted by skilled artisans. And just one can take an entire week to make. Even the most subtle differences in the way a bow is made will change how well it plays. So why would someone pay so much for a bow? And what makes it so expensive?

I studied Cello, and had a beginner bow. I tried my teacher's bow, which cost 10k USD, and it was a totally different sound and feel. As a beginner, I could not understand how a stick and hair could be different, or more expensive. It was like I was flying a single propeller air plane and my teacher was piloting the Space Shuttle. Amazing differences.

I didn’t realize until I played upright bass was that there are two types of bow. One is basically the violin/cello bow but bigger. The other had a saddle shape on the inside of the handle, so you held it sideways instead of over the top, and honestly when the bow gets that HEAVY, it’s hard on the wrist to hold it like you would for a cello so I totally preferred the saddle one.

Interestingly enough, the tail feather in the devil’s bow when he went down to Georgia came from a Phoenix who only made one other tail feather. Nobody knows where the twin bow is. It is said that only the worthy would be capable of touching such a bow without disintegrating. When the chosen one destined to play the twin bow plays against Johnny supposedly the world will be their orchestra. The lightning, thunder, and waves will hold their breath awaiting the result. But that’s just a myth, obviously. No chance of that happening, right?

I've been a bow maker for 15 years. What's important is the stick, it's thickness and camber. Poor sticks are difficult to turn into good sticks. I make bows out of Pernambuco and ipea. The Pernambuco is alwaysa better bow . A good stick which is still in it's raw form can run from $100 to $300. A Lukie reading is used to tell the quality. If it has a high rating, 5500, then we check specific density and vibration. The rest of the material is not costly, just a bit of silver, ebony, mother of pearl. A hank of top quality hair runs less then $20.00. So why would a bow sell for $6,000? Beats me, but I'll take the money.
@notheretoargue2885
@notheretoargue2885 3 года назад
The extra money it "costs" aside from the raw materials is all the time and effort put into making the bow AND the time the artisan spent learning all these processes, kinda like how a doctor gets paid a lot for a 30 min consultation; you are not paying for only the 30 mins, but the years of study that doctor had to go through

I dislike these people so much. The most expensive bow I've actually bought (and not borrowed) is a Bazin which was priced at $3000 AUD which is not too bad considering it was literally the greatest bow I'd ever played on ... until I had a friend overseas make a bow for me which matched its playing characteristics and sound. The sound was actually a little brighter and I preferred this. I could be heard even more over a piano when playing a viola & piano sonata. So can you guess the country of origin that made my new bow that is better than the French Bazin? ;) And guess the price too please ;) Also, it's funny that Bazin is a French name but it's not fancy enough for some snobby players....

I never knew violin bows are this expensive 😳. Then again, I am not a musician. 🚶‍♂️

I had my heavy fiberglass bow from 45 years ago ($15). The original hair was actually some plastic fibers. I remember applying rosin the first time; it wouldn't stick. The bow is now finally broken from the tension stress at the tip a few months ago. I have to spend some money now.

i wish more industries and crafts would allow more apprenticeships instead of everyone needing to go to college for 4+ years.

The whole ethos of colleges is flawed, since everything is about a uniform standard of mediocrity. 80% will get you an honours degree, but imagine going on to design 100 buildings and feeling proud that only 20 of them collapsed. Or how about working as an airline pilot and only crashing once a month. Working to 100% standards every day of your life is difficult for most students to fully comprehend.

@@snowwhite5035 yes, THE chaconne, Bach’s partita for violin no. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, no 5. Arguably one of the hardest pieces ever written for solo performance…I’d recommend Jascha Heifetz’s or Arthur Grumiaux’s performances for an introduction.

What this video doesn’t mention is that the wood used for bows, pernambuco wood, comes from a specific tree called the brazilwood tree (the national tree of Brazil.) The problem is that the brazilwood tree is now endangered and is nearly extinct in most of its original region. The trade of pernambuco wood is likely to be banned in the immediate future, which will create a major problem in the bow-making industry which highly values this wood. The International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (IPCI), whose members are the bowmakers who rely on pernambuco for their livelihoods, is working to replant the trees. IPCI also advocates for the usage of other woods for violin bows to raise money to plant pernambuco seeds.

Wow. After many years of wanting to play violin or cello. I now know that I will probably never have access to a good bow. Bows are intense pieces of art. I should just keep playing bass and try to get an 8 string mandolin one day.
@brothermangill2308
@brothermangill2308 2 года назад
This is the same with all instruments. Luckily Violins/Cellos/Guitars sound better with age. A luthier is such a valued proffesion. As a life long musician (Guitar/Bass/Mandolin/Piano) i can appreciate an incredible instrument. It's why I pay hundreds for strings alone. I spent 2k on restoring an 1971 Martin steel string to restore perfect intonation and full body sound. I paid over a thousand for custom wrapped pickups for my 67 telecaster. As a musician you continuously seek the best sound.
@BinCaAlors
@BinCaAlors 2 года назад
I think good technique and practice will get you farther than good instruments. You have to evolve as a player and get an instrument that matches where you are in your musical journey. A sloppy player with a 1971 Martin will sound worst than someone who practice regularly, has a good technique and play on an intermediate level Yamaha.

"Professional bows/players have their bows redone every 3 months." 2 Cellos looked at each other and said "Thunderstruck?" New bows please after they finished tearing it up. Have you seen those guys tear up a bow in minutes? :D Bloody good job they are earning top cash for their musical skills, as I bet that shit gets really expensive. =D
