Virginia is known as Mother of Presidents, but is less known as Father of Rebels. Virginia probably is the strongest state. Well Virginia almost has zero issues with climate, no major hurricanes, tornados, flooding, snow, we might have a freak storm once in a blue moon. Strong workforce, and education backgrounds. Universities and strongest economy due to defense and tech. If you was to break up the 50 states Virginia would wind up as one of the 10 strongest economies of the world. Huge amount of military vets and active duty population here as well. Our sole enemy is traffic

The voting bloc is already that way. Having lived several years in Southwest Virginia AND later several years in Northern Virginia, I ca testify that they have nothing in common. The dense Northern suburbs are almost entirely dependent on the Federal Government and won't support the rural areas of Virginia on most anything. Look at Maryland's map and you can see they have it even worse. The Western voters in Maryland famously held up the construction of a critical second span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for many years. No sweat off their hinterland backsides. Traffic in the Summer months would back up to Baltimore or Bowie (almost DC). Orémus Y'all.

Then please elaborate as to why one single tiny part of the state should have control over the vast majority of the rest of it? Let me stop you before hand, because of course you'll say population. "It's where a majority of the population lives!" yeah that is such a cop out answer. I know that is how our system is set up, and it's honestly garbage and needs to change. Until it changes to a system of actual equal representation the only real solution to this problem (yes, it is a problem) is dissolution and seperation of the state. Let Richmond and the DC area be East Virginia. The same fundamental issue exists with California and New York (more specifically California). They have a HUGE population count but only in a few coastal cities. We're talking cities of MILLIONS. And look at their electoral maps, it's a sea of red with only a few counties that are blue. THOSE people in those cities effectively tell the entire state (and furthermore the whole country) how to live their lives and what laws should be passed. I live in Mississippi. Why the hell do 30 million people in two different states on the other side of the country get to tell me I can't have a gun? State Rights do exist, and I think at this point the federal government and the whole entire electoral college voting system needs to be abolished and replaced.

Yeah, but in cases like those, the states rural population regardless of political affiliation will not have adequate political representation. Why should one city be able to dictate the policy for a rural resident with a completely different culture, economy, and way of life. Even in a state like Pennsylvania where I live and has two larger cities, they dictate nearly all of the states politics. Even in candidates to vote for, most democratic candidates for governor or other statewide offices are from either Philadelphia or Allegheny county on the ballot. That, combined with the majority of state spending going towards these cities and their suburbs, the rural counties are simply left out of the equation.

Okay..... just need to point out the idea that the "rest of the state is unrepresented" is not true. People vote, not acres of land. Too many forget this when looking at a map and thinking seeing the pretty colors (in this case, red) is "most of the people in the state wanted xyz." The red you see all over the state has less people. That pretty colors on a map do not represent the people. So for example if: County 1 has 5 people County 2 has 7 people County 3 has 2 people County 4 has 3 people County 5 has 10 people County 6 has 9 people If Counties 1 through 4 hold 49% representation in government; and Counties 5 and 6 hold 51% representation in government..... lets not act like Counties 1 through 4 "has no representation" because they couldnt force their ideology through minority rule. Nor should the entire state bend over backwards to do what they want instead of what the majority of the state wants. Way too many look at the pretty colors on a map and think that represents the amount of people who voted for a specific thing. TLDR: (1) Representation should reflect the people, not acres of land. 5 acres of land with 1 person shouldnt bt default overrule 1 acre with 3 people. (2)The minority claiming they arent represented, tend to the group quiet the moment they get their way over the majority. In otherwords, they dont give 2 shits about "representation", theyre just upset the times minority rule doesnt win. And yes, theres definitely many state laws under affect thanks to minority rule. (3)This phenomenon you speak of exists in almost every state in this country. Including the states Virginia is surounded by like Maryland, North Carolina, etc. Maryland for example is a blue state, but different parts of Maryland arent blue.
@soggycheese8485
@soggycheese8485 Месяц назад
"people vote not acres" Yes. But the issue is because our system is winner take all, the people who live in more rural areas can't get a democratic foothold because they aren't being REPRESENTED by their officials. The officials vote to satisfy the majority meaning with a hypothetical population of 100, 51 blue voters and 49 red voters, the state would count as 100 blue voters. That is why the claim of "conservatives aren't getting represented" holds true. And also why splitting it like he suggested would work. I think changing our voting system instead of our borders would be fairer and easier, but w/e.
@RaiRyu292
@RaiRyu292 Месяц назад
@@soggycheese8485it's not true. Representatives of your district gets voted into the House. If rural America is the minority, then they should have a minority representation. What people in the minority really want is minority rule, where everyone bends over backwards to make sure the minority is happy, and the majority unhappy.
@RaiRyu292
@RaiRyu292 Месяц назад
@@soggycheese8485No he's just flat wrong. They are being represented by their representatives. They are just the minority, and butthurt they can't impose their will on the majority. 49 Republicans and 51 Democrats is still 49 Republicans. Regardless if you get butthurt your 49 can't force the 51 to bend to your whim. As spare me the tears as the 49 would have no issue if they were the majority. With the minority party ignorantly pointing at pretty colors on all map to convince themselves they are the majority often. As for splitting it, again it's just a butthurt agenda that dodges the point. Let me let you in on a little secret that will blow your mind. Those pretty red colors on a map isn't 100% Republicans. Just like those pretty blue colors on a map isn't 100% Democrats. What do I mean you may ask. Those "red rural districts" you want to "split." Those aren't 100% red voters. In other words the same logic you are attempting to apply on a state level, applies to the district that's "red." The blue voters in those districts go ignored because they are the minority there. So your proposal doesn't magically fix the problem. It never could. Simply put like I said originally, the video is just butthurt red is the minority and can't force minority rule. But those red districts have no problem with the minority of blue voters being overshadowed in red districts.
@jgunner280
@jgunner280 Месяц назад
Acers don't vote, but they matter for what people need. When you lump more numbers together and give them all the power, that's something we also see and call a mob. When its winner takes all in such a tiny area, the numbers should still be a factor, but its not the end-all be-all, and no the guys outside do NOT get represented if they are beaten every time in a system that only would work on sheer numbers. You're listening to an echo chamber. Yet a very price pragmatic, money-making one. Its more complicated than just a straight by-number democracy = the only correct way, but its also not a case of "but all the red!". The distance, land detail, and their different needs and cultures do matter. Otherwise on a global pure scale, we'd all just copy and do EXACTLY what China and India wants until we fall apart from having different needs that they can't know, meet, or emulate correctly.
@RaiRyu292
@RaiRyu292 Месяц назад
@jgunner280 Again, more logic that demands the minority to have more say over the majority. While still falsely claiming you have no representation. What you just said does not change if there is: 10 district, 80% of the population is blue and 20% of the population is red. Red is given representation if they have 2 reps out of the 10. Red. Is. Not. The. Majority. Hence why they have 8 out of 10. It's completely false to claim Red is not represented when they have 2 out of 10, and only make up 20% of the population. You are just mad you can't force minority rule. No, you having more acres does not remotely mean you should have more say over the majority of people in this country.

It’s an open secret that electoral boundaries are drawn to favor republican candidates in most southern states and will often Divy up democratic leaning areas to secure strong republican majorities. If you’re complaining about rural areas not receiving adequate representation then you have to say the same for cities, otherwise your values only apply to one group (the one you favor) thus exposing them as being biased and not truly good for all the people of the state, only created to empower the groups you favor and to disenfranchise those you dislike.

@isisaphrodite3585 of course my comment sounded racist to you 🙄 it really wasn't though. I'll clarify for ya. The black cultures here are different from each other in both good and bad ways. For example most of the northern area of the "blackbelt" mentioned in this video the people can separated by generation. The older generations are either completely racist and violent or the nicest and most decent human being I've ever met and the younger generations are more self focused and mature and strive for success where as the southern area of the black belt is where the 7 cities are all together and it's more violent and almost tribal since they can't be around each other and like which side of the river their from matters. Watch the video before you go off about people being racist otherwise you're just talking out your ass
@thatguychris7824
@thatguychris7824 3 месяца назад
@pyronuggets Bruh, I did watch the entire video, and nowhere did you mention anything about tribalism in the black community or crime. You just said that 'black culture is different', which implies that black culture is crime rather than a result of socio-economic factors. I bet the black belt is one of the poorest areas in your state (I don't have the data to confirm) and crime and poverty go hand-in-hand because noone is going to risk their career and future prospects by joining a gang, dealing drugs, etc if they have a bright future ahead of them. It's only when they know there is literally no alternative and that no matter what they do, they'll remain poor and discriminated against for the rest of their lives simply because of where they live. If anything that just makes it worse since you're essentially saying that 'black people are so violent and their tribalism so bad that it's easier to separate ourselves from them than try to help and let them sort out everything themselves'. How can you expect things to get better in that community if they were in a smaller, poorer state than before? Economic issues and violence would simply drive more jobs away and thus people who work those jobs too, making the people who remain poorer which would only make the problem even worse. The solution to these problems is not segregation and pretending it doesn't exist or is someone else's problem, but working together on a state level to solve the issue and having them work with you to solve the other issues of the state.
@pyronuggets
@pyronuggets 3 месяца назад
@thatguychris7824 Oh, you're misunderstanding me. By tribalism, I mean the black cultures related to other black cultures are wildly different, so it comes off almost tribal. The black belt is technically the richer areas of the state, and I mentioned nothing about crime other than violence. Now, touching on violence, it's not race related, but it is rampant in this area just because they're cities. There is something to be said for the state needing better representation, and I don’t even disagree with adding Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Alexandria to a state centered around DC, but ultimately a state’s legislature and congressional representatives should answer to the majority population, and that majority population lives in the big cities (and Blacksburg) and votes largely Democrat. The problem with opening the door to re-drawing borders like you suggest is that, once that genie comes out of the bottle, it never goes back in. People can call for re-drawing of borders for greater political autonomy of any kind- better black representation, better young representation, better agricultural representation, better female representation, whatever, the motivation wouldn't matter. You'd effectively create a country where the interior state borders morph like ripples in water, it would turn voting and representation on anything into an operational nightmare as states fracture, reform, and emerge into their own polities.
@TimothyCarmain
@TimothyCarmain 3 месяца назад
What you describe is achievable through gerrymandering, the re-drawing of state borders would be overkill. How about if when states decide to redraw voting districts to move a large percentage of those minority voters intact as a voting block into a neighboring district that already has a larger percentage of that target minority, they throw in new congressional seats commensurate to the new “enhanced” district population plus a couple of Senate seats?
@TimothyCarmain
@TimothyCarmain 9 месяцев назад
If the suburban areas adjacent to DC hold enough of the state’s population to give Democrats control of the state legislature by a slim margin of 51% to 49% held by Republicans, how can anyone claim that rural (ie Republicans) voters have “no representation”? If elections these days weren’t regarded as zero-sum contests, why would members belonging to the minority party bother showing up to work at all? Then there would at least be some substance behind the claim that rural counties leaning Republican have no representation. But when Republicans are reporting to work when the legislature is open for business, every district whose elected delegate shows up for work that day has full representation, the same as any district whose elected delegate is a Democrat. Heavily populated areas have more voters, which mean more voting districts (determined by number of voting-age residents, not by land mass measurements) which in turn means more opportunities for those who want to serve to do so. But those whose values and opinions are out of step with the majority of voters in the district they’re running in shouldn’t expect to be elected. And once elected, if all they plan to do is sabotage the agenda of the majority party, then Republican voters in every district are getting what they expected. So how does one justify the losing party’s obstructionist agenda? Do the majority of voters whose candidates were successfully elected just have to suck it up? Maybe it is time for our “American Experiment” to be declared a failure and let the states out of this arrangement to become self-determining entities unto themselves? Self-determining and self-reliant are mutually exclusive, and let’s face it - it’s the blue states contributing the bulk of federal tax revenues which are then redistributed to states with the lowest revenues and the greatest needs. Take the federal infrastructure away and up to a third of states would fail within the first two years of “liberty” - most of them red states where Republicans ran the table in past elections. If that were to happen, who would save the states of the deep south from going under? What about the plains states? The reason Californians pay an extra ten percent in federal taxes is because states that need $1.78 in federal spending for every $1 they contribute would collapse without interstate welfare. Wealthier red states collectively aren’t wealthy enough to make up that deficit. If you vote, you have representation - it may not be the representation you wanted, but it’s there nonetheless unless you choose to disengage. People do, and that’s their prerogative; it’s just a lame way to govern.

We currently have a Republican governor who was elected in large part due to areas you are claiming "are bring controlled by the north". Trying to exclude urban areas and give them less power is the same dumb idea that gave us gerrymandering and the extremely outdated electoral college. Every vote should count the same and we shouldn't start counting your votes less because you happen to live in one area Furthermore, you're conveniently leaving out that Northern Virginia provides by far the most economic growth and tax revenue to the rest of the state. There's a lot to do in this state supposedly, but if you're not into history, politics or being around the water, and have done some out of state travelling, it's probably going to seem boring. Even most of the people, while friendly most of the time, are just not very interesting to interact with usually unless they're from somewhere else. Virginian here, and I want to give my thoughts; while the northern area having many seats seems excessive, there is also the point of population- rural virginia is rural for a reason. It is not nearly as densely populated as the northern areas. As a Fairfax resident, I also would like to note that the county governments have a lot more to do with general representation in the area, and we can even see in our own state governor the fact of the republican demographic being represented. There is certainly a large divide between the north and south of our state, and the population as a whole. Separating the state itself is an honestly bad idea. For one thing, the DC area was intentionally carved from two states, so to create a new state for DC and part of Virginia ignores the contributions to DC made by Maryland. Cutting up Virginia to add to different states doesn't solve our issues, rather it would make new ones and be horrendous to attempt to execute. You can see by most population density maps as well that the majority of Virginian residents live in the northern part of the state, and in fact our largest counties are some of the best in the country. To remove this aspect of Virginia is to ignore the fact of how many of our citizens alone live in counties such as my own. Virginia is largely democratic because of these denser regions. You claim to want to represent underrepresented Virginians, yet your solution is to make them not Virginians or remove a large portion of those who call Virginia home. Redrawing our districts is important and valid, but creating new states is downright impossible and would create a whole world of larger problems regarding our larger governmental sphere. It would remove US Representatives in our country's house and senate for Virginia, creating a worse outcome for representation as a whole.

Im a northern virginian. I dont think virginia is all that unique in demographic differences between parts of the state. California, florida, new york, alabama, georgia all come to mine that have very different regional differences. Some Nova folks thinks its not fair that their taxes go to the south. I not sure if a state should change just because its been urbanized/suburbanized. I moved to mclean when Evans farm was shutting down and there was a lot of signs to save evans farm. That was probably the nail in the coffin of the old south in nova. Living most my life about 10 min from DC, I always felt dc and nova were very different. I went to college in dc (American university) and volunteer at the dc public schools. It is very much different school system. Gun laws, demographics, public transportation, crime rate, tourism, local businesses. While I would agree nova is distinct from the rest of the state, it's also very different from dc. Some fun facts of our great commonwealth: Va one of 4 commonwealths which is not have any legal distinction from states. Today 56 nations are part of the British commonwealth (including Canada, South Africa, Jamaica, India, New zealand). Brands and inventions from VA include m&ms, chapstick, Phillip Morris (tobacco), mountain dew, street cars, fraternity (William and Mary), law school, mental hospital, peanut industry, five guys, AOL, CIA Famous virginians: timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Missy Eliot, Chris brown, Jason Mraz, Sandra bullock, Katie Couric, Warren beatty, Rob Lowe, Allen Iverson, Michael Vick, bunch of presidents from George Washington to Woodrow Wilson. Arlington County was named after Arlington house (Robert e Lee who was the son of Mary custis Washington offspring) estate. Now its the Arlington national cemetery since the Civil War. Arlington was the southern half of DC, voted to reintergrate into Virginia in 1840s due to likely abolishment of slavery in dc. Arlington is the geogrphically smallest county in US. Number 7 prince William Co Number 4 Fairfax Co Number 2 Stafford Co Number 1 Loudon Co with the highest medium income in usa. How Arlington is not on the list doggles the mind. Movies set in va: Pocahontas, Bourne identity, remember the titans, Donnie darko, mcgruber, incredible hulk, science of the lambs Third most spoken language after English and Spanish is korean. Falls church city is 2.2 square miles big! Not part of adjacent falls church Fairfax County. Loving vs virginia was 1967 case of white man trying to legally marry a black woman. Carry me back to old virginny" was the state song until 1997. Va has the only state flag with nudity. It bears Athena with her breast hanging out. The Washington redskins camp and headquarters is in Ashburn Virginia. The Washington capitals practice facility is in Arlington VA (so was the redskins before ashburn). The home stadium was agreed upon to move from RFK stadium to Alexandria train yard in the early 1990s. VA governor Wilder and Jack Kent Cooke (redskins owner) made public announcement for the move and construction to begin. Alexandria residents fought to prevent the move and the organization reversed its decision and moved to Landover MD.

Honestly, the groups can exist together because they have for hundreds of years, not just in Virginia but across the counry. The issue is lack of representation, which could be solved by a referendum to have massive population centers be integrated as new states, decoupling the "rich men north of Richmond" from the "rural yokels" while maintaining the majority of their representation to the federal government.

The funny answer is that its a fake state. Actual answer is Virginia was there first and the western part split off during the civil war and decided to be West Virginia.

The rest of Virginia was not consulted about having west Virginia carved off of them and was unwilling to change their name as in their view there was no west Virginia, just land occupied by the Union.

Virginia would be better off if they abolished slavery following the Nat Turners Revolt and the freeman population repatriated to Liberia. This would have so much benefit for Virginia and thus make the state greater than it ever has been before. Industry and so many jobs would become available encouraging Americans and European immigrants to migrate to Virginia. Virginia would have a larger population and the South as a whole would prosper and industrialize if they abolished slavery as soon as possible and repatriate their former slaves to Africa. They would be entirely homogeneous and new jobs & housing opportunities would be provided for Whites and European immigrants who would be enticed to work and settle in the South. So the Upland and Deep South wouldn’t be as impoverished and badly neglected as they are today.

@@parrotconservative General Lee himself advocated for the reparation of slaves to Liberia. His Virginia and the South would be able to industrialize easier and lands would be opened up to further development, resource extraction and new housing & industries.

@@nickhueper2906 There is more than that such as the fact that many political parties failed to even stop the NSDAP. Also, it was the largest party in the Reichstag, so they were fucked either way.

Middle class white dude here. I moved from NoVa further South in my 20s. Was absolutely shocked at the racism. Seriously, it’s bad, and only in a way that anyone will admit if you are “one of their own”. I was raised believing that racism in our country is overblown and a mainstream media illusion. It’s not. Believe me a Lot of people in south VA are capital R racist. I later moved to Alabama…. It did Not get better.
