At this point every single six part disney plus show has struggled to perfect that structure. Even Loki didn’t quite stick the landing with the finale, and its third episode really wasn’t of much consequence compared to the other stellar episodes. That is the best case scenario we’re dealing with here. From Loki to Hawkeye to Ms Marvel to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, every other six parter just gets worse in terms of its structure and pacing. This isn’t exclusive to Marvel; the Star Wars shows have suffered too.
Wandavision is really the only Disney plus show that couldn’t be a movie, and that’s why it works the best. You need that week to week format if you’re going to jump through different eras of tv. You need to draw things out if you’re going to structure the mystery around this TV format. And it feels right at home in your living room when you find out that Wanda's connection to television is unexpectedly personal. Sure, you could do this television hoping as a two hour movie, but you want 30 minutes to get a full I Love Lucy episode. The first two episodes work only because they commit to the bit.

I still remember when they announced all the D+ shows and proudly said that the unrestricted streaming format would give them the creative freedom to make any show as long as it needs to be, from episode numbers to episode length. So WandaVision was 9 x ~21 minutes to fit the sitcom format. Then FatWS was 6 x ~45 minutes. Then Loki was 6 x ~45 minutes. Then Hawkeye was 6 x ~45 minutes. Then Moon Knight was 6 x ~45 minutes. Now Ms. Marvel is... well, you know. I guess creative freedom lasted only as long as it took the algorithm to calculate the ideal combination for maximum views.

I remember a bunch of people were hating on the ambiguous sitcom sections during the first few eps who then were delighted to see everything revealed in the 4th ep as we got into the real world sections. I was one of those who actually got more kick out of the sitcom sections because they were genuinely different and intriguing. Everytime I got pulled out of it into the real world sections it felt like I was getting dragged out out of a really fun gameplay session to do my house chores. In the end, it wasn't the real world sections or the grand smackdown of a finale that made the show so memorable but their sheer dedication towards executing their ballsy basic premise. It was what set the show apart from the rest of the MCU in a good way

I think the biggest thing WandaVision had going for it terms of pure structure which you hardly see come up is that fact of it not being an action/superhero story for the majority of its runtime. Don’t get me wrong I *like* Superhero action, it’s a big appeal of the genre to me, and there’s been action in Mandalorian, Hawkeye, Falcon & The Winter Soldier, What If, etc that I’ve liked, but man does WandaVision benefit from just getting to *tell story* for 8 and a half episodes. I’ve been *loving* Ms. Marvel, but it’s held back from greatness by weak villains and mediocre action editing, which makes it feel like the show is just less interesting in the superhero action-as-genre side of itself.

THANK YOU. I’ve been saying this for a while now. I really do like most of these Marvel/Star Wars shows, but other than WandaVision it is so obvious that these were probably initially movie scripts that they just drew out into TV shows because Mando’s weekly syndication probably helped retain subscribers. Personally I would prefer they just release them as Disney+ original movies or something, the rate of release for these shows is so rapid fire anyway so I don’t think they’ll have a dip in subscribers if they switch to movies (or at least go into them planning a show).

@rhetiq9989
@rhetiq9989 2 года назад
I believe that last part fell apart due to people's expectations. Now in your case it might be for a completely different reason but far as I'm concerned for many others it was due to overblown speculations that took the internet by storm for weeks, leading to stuff like Mephisto and whatnot. When all that didn't come into play and the answers turned out to be much more simple than they had hoped, shit went down. It's not necessarily a bad thing since the show did set itself up to be a mystery so that led to people coming up with all sorts of crazy shit in their heads, which is good because that means they gave a shit about the show
@GabesEdtiz
@GabesEdtiz 2 года назад
@@rhetiq9989 on one hand, I agree that I did have some expectations, some of which were maybe a bit too high in retrospect. But on the other hand, I felt as if the low expectations I had for certain areas fell apart just as much. All I wanted was for the show reveal Wanda as the true antagonist, not throw some random Witch from the Salem Witch Trials in order to make her look better. And listen, I love Kathryn Hahn and she did great with what she was given, but she did absolutely not need to be in the show; Wanda could have been a great antagonist in her own show. But no, they opted to portray her as a hero, despite the fact that she enslaved an entire town against their will. The entire S.W.O.R.D. subplot also didn’t need to be there; we were revealed the true purpose behind their appearances in the 4th episode, and we never got any satisfying payoffs to the mysteries they were building. The worst part is that they tried to cram in more mysteries at the last minute, none of which got satisfying or even worthwhile answers. I feel like that’s the problem with the MCU nowadays: the stories never do anything too bold. Say what you want about fans and their expectations, but I feel like a part of their disappointment is valid; Kevin Feige has a library of stories, concepts, and ideas to pull just from the main comics alone, yet it always feels like the MCU goes for the most basic stories. WandaVision had so much potential, and it could’ve become one of the greatest Marvel shows behind Daredevil. For me personally, however, it started out intriguing but failed to fully capitalize on it’s creative promises. I’ll still watch the MCU; I have since I was very little. But at this point, I’m just expecting your average hero’s journey and superhero movie/show plot. Now, back to *The Boys* …

Wandavision set the bar for the Disney + shows and nothing since has quite managed to replicate the quality. I think this and The Mandalorian prove that if Disney are going to go down the TV route 6-8 self contained episodes with an overall arc that is carefully threaded in can have a lot more impact than the standard 6 hour film that is being churned out time after time.

(I do also tend to defend it more because I feel like a lot of arguments made against it, especially online, are made in bad faith. You can tell from the tone of comments.) I think to better embrace the TV format, it shouldve been 8 eps and make the two more active rather than reactive to the show's events. Maybe incorporate flashbacks? In terms of consistency, Moon Knight is the best overall out of these Disney+ shows imo, but only a margin above WandaVision. The reason being that WandaVision began to falter in quality for me even before the finale, at ep. 7. The sitcom aspect wasn't as focused on and the "conventional" MCU plot with SWORD, which I didn't find as interesting, began to take center focus.

A nitpick I keep having with reviews of these 6 parter shows is the whole "6 hours" schtick. Unless the episode content is exactly an hour, they're not 6 hours. Using Obi-Wan as an example, the actual pre-credits time was about 40 minutes per episode (some shorter, some longer). That's a 4 hour show, not 6. It may not seem like a huge difference, but you're inflating the length by 50%. That is a large chunk of show that we're saying is there, but is not. I know the old "hour long show" idea of a 42-45 minute episode with room for 15-18 minutes of ads still exists, but these shows are delivered sans ad breaks, and the Disney shows specifically don't have ad break segments, so you're getting more content per minute than a traditional show that needs to catch the audience up on what happened before the "break" again. But it's still not really an hour, and with the shows being structured so there are no ads on the service you need to watch them on, it's really not an hour. 4 hours really sells the idea that these are movies that have been split into 6 parts and lengthened, rather than being a 3 hour movie they doubled in length somehow.

As it stands now, I agree with Matt here that the main threat of the show should've been Walker only
@ejbell
@ejbell 2 года назад
Totally agree. F&WS was definitely my favourite despite it's eventual flaws in execution. It broached harder themes than any other show, especially for Disney. I think the Flagsmashers should've been background, what triggers the plot (but not killers), and the villain should've more overtly been Walker. Imo the show gave the audience the benefit of the doubt too much. The moral ambiguity of Walker and Flagsmashers gave the excuse to too many people online to make arguments in bad faith.

Idk, I get what you’re saying about Wandavision, but I think the show fails because of how the entire show was built around the ending reveals. Wanda’s arc was decent, but the last episode just devolved into standard laser battle schlock, and then she just kinda got let off the hook without learning much (or nothing at all if we count the damage Multiverse of Madness did). This makes the internal conflict become hollow by the end of the show, and the external conflict in Agatha is just lame by the end since she had no character building prior to the show’s final act (see laser battle comment above). Loki did a better job at doing what Wandavision tried to do, in my opinion. That show, while built around finding Kang initially, is actually just a straight up character study, and every episode feels like a natural progression towards the climax; more of a really long movie instead of an episodic show. I especially love how, in the end, it’s revealed there really was no true villain behind the curtain, and it’s truly one of Marvel’s most original ideas; there was never any enemy to fight in the show’s “glorious purpose,” the only villain the show had was the fear and egos of the characters, which they all are too late to grow out of by the end. That gets me so hyped for season 2, because now they have to fix all of their mistakes, and a season 2 feels earned. Also, Loki gets extra bonus points for its soundtrack and visual storytelling. The show’s music is by far the best Marvel has ever put out, and is a near masterpiece. I also just love how much of Loki and Sylvie’s arcs go unspoken, and instead are left for the audience to interpret based on their actions.

I'm really late, but I think the structure of Arcane (netflix, league of legends series) could've really worked for Eternals 3 episodes per part, in a 3 part series with 1 finale added on (I think arcane did that, if not, add a finale after) Each part is a different era, and we chronologically see these characters grow and grow alongside them Release them a part a week, or one episode a week and space a week between each part - gives people time to discuss it, and build anticipation for the next

The problem with the third episode of Loki wasn't that it didn't matter. If anything, the series as a whole wouldn't work if Loki and Sylvie weren't given any time to get to know one another. But the fact that episode two left off with what seemed like an exciting climactic moment (Sylvie bombing the timeline and the TVA being thrown into chaos) only for it to barely be of any relevance (yeah, Sylvie was trying to sneak in, but that went nowhere within 5 minutes, and the next time we see the TVA, it's like it never even happened) made episode three feel especially underwhelming. Not to mention that I personally find Loki's characterization in that episode just kind of bizarre (the show overall has those moments, but this episode as a whole sticks out to me). The idea of Loki and Sylvie being forced to work together and get to know one another is a good one and works well with the overall themes of the show; it just wasn't pulled off very well. Which is a shame as I do overall like the show.

I'm not so mad that these are just stretched out movies, but I am more disappointed that they aren't smaller scaled conflicts. Moon Knight should have never been a show about stopping a guy that wanted to kill every bad person on the planet with an Egyptian goddess, it should have been a one man crusade to bring justice in New York. Falcon and the Winter Soldier does have this whole thing with the Flag Smashers wanting to erase half of life to put things back the way it was after Thanos even though our main focus is on USAgent. Ms. Marvel has just revealed that Kamala is some bridge between dimensions and the one dimension is going to destroy the Earth. I'll give Loki and What If...? a pass for having the multiverse coming to an end because that's kind of their whole conceit, different worlds and timelines and whatnot, but then also in the movies, Shang-Chi has to save the world from the Dweller in Darkness from sucking away everyone's souls, the Eternals have to stop the world from ending by a Celestial birth, and while Spider-Man's personal conflict is small, it does become a big multiversal thing at the very end of No Way Home. I don't read comics, but surely, not every story is about saving the world, the universe, or the multiverse, I'm pretty sure these guys also stop petty theft, mobsters, someone planting bombs and making threats in order to make them mayor or president or whatever, etc. While Hawkeye was a bit bloated and disheveled, I really enjoyed how it was about a guy just trying to get back to his family for Christmas, but he has this kid that got him in trouble with the mob. It's a fun story to have in this universe that may not be super consequential to the future, but is worldbuilding with the characters they introduced so that they can easily appear in future stories later that are of greater consequence. We need stories that are about people struggling to just live a normal life day to day because they have powers or have chosen to do good via superhero theatrics. I don't need to see the world in peril every three months. As for WandaVision, it's great. Nice small scale, it's all about Wanda and her trauma. Then we have Multiverse of Madness, and it feels more like it's a three episode capper to that show than the big bombastic mutliversal movie it probably should have been. Ironically, I wouldn't have minded something larger stakes because Doctor Strange saved the world in his first movie, and seems to protect it on a regular basis, now let's have a multiversal threat for him in the sequel. Wanda's not even a threat to the multiverse, she's just a threat to another version of herself, and I guess also herself, too. I enjoy that movie, but it does seem a little underwhelming for what the name on the poster suggests. It makes sense that Doctor Strange would have to save the world, but Moon Knight is not that kind of guy because he is traditionally a street level character. Captain America may have saved the universe, but he also needed a lot of help to do so, he's normally just trying to simply stop a terrorist organization or butting heads with the governement. How about we just save the the city or a country instead of the whole world, it's still recovering from all that happened in Infinity War and Endgame, I don't need to see it threatened by global genocide or the core blowing up right now. I think that they're doing a good job at giving everyone character, but I need smaller stakes so that when the world is actually in danger in the next big team-up crossover movie, I feel like it is because it hasn't been prevented by everyone in the movie already. There are certain characters and teams that can handle the bigger threats and it make sense like Doctor Strange, Thor, and the Guardians of the Galaxy, and there are characters that can grow to have those larger threats or be part of a team and contribute to stopping those threats like Captain America, Black Panther, and Ms. Marvel, but Phase 4's contributions of movies and shows is the first time where I'm really noticing any sort of "Marvel Formula" because we keep having End-of-the-World plots for everyone or the movie/show still has some gigantic, bombastic, explosion filled finale when it could just be a much simpler story to begin with for half of them. It may be overdone, but I wouldn't mind seeing the rec center get saved for an episode of a show, you know?

My only criticism of this video is that I don't think it's fair to attribute the problems of Disney+ tv shows to Moon Knight when you admitted you had only seen a few episodes and not the entire series. You even made the gross assumption that Moon Knight tries to convince its audience that the psyche ward is the real world and the super hero stuff isn't. In reality, the psyche ward plays a pretty dramatic role in the plot of the rest of the show, and it's not treated as a, "Is this the real world? Who knows?" kind of red herring, but instead it becomes a pretty interesting plot device to first (spoilers ahead by the way) introduce the afterlife and then later deconstruct Marc Spectre's character. However, both of those aspects of the ward are left to episode five and six which is where you left the series, so the criticism you provide for the show is, quite literally, missing context. Additionally, I think it's well worth mentioning that in episode four only ~6 odd minutes of a 40 minute long episode in an over 5 hour long series is dedicated to playing up the idea that everything we'd seen so far in the four episodes of the series wasn't real. On top of that, this isn't even the entirety of the sequence in episode four that is set in the psyche ward and the rest of the episode is dedicated to untangling the facade that the psyche ward is real - showing the lanterns swinging and Steven being there somehow, to the big hippo woman who shows up at the end of the episode, to even the music changing to Moon Knight's theme. They make it very clear that the psyche ward isn't real by the time the episode is over so I'm struggling to see how you came to that conclusion from that episode's context alone. Perspective wise, and pacing wise, we spend a very short amount of time with the idea the psyche ward is the real world and from then on the ward is ultimately used to interact with other elements of Moon Knight's world in a constructive way. From introducing the Egyptian afterlife, to deconstructing Marc Spectre's character, to aiding the general mystique and mystery of the show by flicking back between the ward and other locations and realities. The sequence where Marc slowly gains consciousness in the ward and runs away from Harrow builds the drama and mystery for the reveal at the end of the episode, especially as the ward's facade unravels and the Egyptian mythology sinks its teeth into it. I'm not saying that if you watched all of Moon Knight you wouldn't feel that the show suffered from being a television series like you're proposing in this video (although personally I disagree), but I am saying that the point at which the show lost you has led to you misinterpreting the show pretty egregiously, and applying that misinterpretation to the show's pacing to support your point makes your argument a lot weaker. As for the other thing you said in that section, that, "We're bombarded with so many six hour long movies it's impossible to keep up and have a life," I really don't see how the runtime of any of the Disney+ shows can't be managed when they're released weekly. You're quite literally not bombarded with six hour movies, they release them in 40 minute segments every week. A feature of Disney+ shows being on a streaming service is that you can use to pick and choose when to spend that time in your week, or y'know, save multiple episodes for a rainy day later on to binge. I understand that complaint is coming from you illustrating burnout with all these shows being released so regularly, but the way you phrased it made it seem like the fairly manageable weekly episodes which have been a staple of TV shows for all these years was too much for you, even though you also mentioned Doctor Who which does the same, but with 10-13 episode long seasons... which you mentioned benefitting the show in another part of the video. I get your point, I think most would agree they feel burnt out with Disney, but you've fumbled it. Anyway, I love your videos, just thought I'd offer some criticism and insight into Moon Knight as you seemed lacking in context.

I loved the idea that she only survived because of her intense anger and hatred turned into love and hope thanks to Vision but nah, she was always a powerful witch throughout the multiverse all along, removing what made her interesting and relatable. and I hated how the show (and stans) treated Wanda like a victim or like she was justified or like what she did (enslaving a town) was not that big of a deal. then again, this video seems to only talk about how Wandavision fits on TV instead of the plot and characters and just talks about other shows and movies

I felt like EVERY time I found myself really getting into the story, the credits rolled. That isn’t a problem for people watching it a year later though.
