Whoever the fuck disliked both this video (great explanation by the way) and Clarence as a whole. We are gonna have to fight. I used to come home from school as use up my boy your before homework to watch it. If you don't see why it's one of the best, count your days.
Its such a sweet show. Anyone else would depict Sumo as a idiot and his father abusive, but they didn't make them that way, they are smart and resourceful. Jeff definitely has OCD, and they show the truggle of it. He hangs out with kids who probably have ADHD which must be a nightmare. They showed kids with can't keep up with the others without makingthem seem lesser, they showed people who aren't perfect parents without making them awful. Clarence is a character without a dad, and they don't make him sad. He says "I don't have a dad but I have a Chad" It's so sweet. This show is so good, it depicts odd situations in a positive light.
I'll say this, if Clarence was released before 2010 it would have been considered one of the best cartoons of CN, but when it initially aired people wanted family cartoons to have unnecessary big plots, you can see this with the firsts pair of seasons of Adventure time, it started as a silly cartoon until they began to put major lore into it
This, and Phineas and Ferb are two shows that handled divorces, lesbian parents, poverty, families with many children and multiple races very normally. Like it’s portrayed to be something very normal and ordinary instead of slapping you in the face with it.
9:13 this scene has always stuck with me, it's only a few seconds long but it has so much emotion, sometimes telling someone you care about them during a hard time can help them a lot. As someone who has lost their dog, it hit close to home
It has such a quick relatability to it, random gestures of kindness can really help people out especially when they loose a loved one. God only knows I needed to hear that when I lost my dog years ago
The beauty of Clarence is that there's no overarching story, it's just childhood mischief that's supposed to connect with you from a nostalgic perspective and I love it
Clarence is one of those shows that genuinely make me feel like a kid again. I dont imagine childhood as playing football in a clean green field, i remember it as getting a horrific scrape while pretending to joust on a bike while construction is actively going on in the background and children are swimming in the dirty stream nearby.
Something I found funny with Clareance being compared to Steven universe was that nobody batted an eye about Jeff having two moms but it’s what everyone puts on a pedestal when it comes to Steven universe Personally when I watched the show when I was younger i was incredibly happy to see Jeff’s parents lol
Because back then nobody really cared about that sort of stuff in cartoons, (and honestly I really wish it could’ve stayed that way), now ever since SU the cartoons when crazy with that… It’s like who cares if this one’s this and the other one’s that? People go crazy for that sort of stuff now because it’s almost everywhere for cartoons ever since… Remember cartoons were just CARTOONS?
because people like to see themselves in characters, like i am far more likely to read a good book if i know it has queer characters because it is relatable to me. i understand you're probably a kid writing this comment but being queer is something people will punish others for, or worse, so seeing it represented as something normal, even celebrated, is a very nice thing
People would always praise how cartoons in the 90's are better than cartoons now when they just feel that way for the sake of nostalgia. Theres tons of terrible cartoons in those times too
I remember my dad liking it a lot, strangely enough. I was a teenager but we’d flip through channels at dinner time when I was in high school & land on it. He liked it because he said it was like “Ed Edd n Eddy in the modern day”, and we both watched that together when I was a kid & loved it. Now that my dad’s gone, I wish that I watched more of it with him. I’m glad he was able to take something special from it.
How is it possible for people to like Chowder & SpongeBob but dislike Clarence? He is literally both of them if they were humans instead of an animal hybrid and sponge respectfully. The biggest different about Clarence is he doesn't cook like the other two but he's still as funny, annoying, optimistic, and friendly. Clarence is a great show and he is a great character.
The cartoon kind of looked different. Sumo was much taller, there were a bunch of other characters which were toys, Jeff also had a different voice actor, the format was 4:3, (Because hd tvs weren't common back then) chad had a blue polo tshìrt and black pants with brown belt, there were so many differences, most characters didn't exist, clarence was much shorter, and most characters voices were different.
@Wormboy no, im being serious. My Mom also wondered why it wasn't on all the time. It was usually broadcast on tv at least once a week. I dont know if it was a fever dream I had, or maybe I got it confused with another character from another fox kids cartoon. Whats Scary was that there is no Wikipedia page.
@@jesus9472 im being serious. And despite the Fact that this was 2000, and the original creator for the 2014 series, and the fact that the creator skyler paige was born october of 1989, there is no way he could have created this.,
I remember really liking this show. It’s very grounded, and realistic. The characters are all clearly stereotypes, but still very fleshed out and characteristically put together in realistic and less dramatic ways than you’d expect in a kids cartoon. For example, Sumo is very clearly poor, and somewhat neglected by his rough and disengaged family. And due to that, he is the rough, tough, lesser-hygienic and sometimes batshit crazy child in the friend group. But the show never has to directly explain that to anyone. If you know, you know. And that’s all the show gives you. It’s very subtle and I remember when watching the show as a tween, it felt pretty personal and each little adventure the kids would go on would remind me of real life events of my own childhood that I used to enjoy. It was a really great show in my eyes.
Clarence was SO slept on during its run. The world feels so alive and everyone feels like a character that has their own stories going on as opposed to just being side characters.
It came out when I was in middle school, and started getting really into anime. If I were still interested in Cartoon Network at the time, I would have loved it
If clarence had Lore people would've loved it because nowadays if a cartoon doesn't have a story it automatically sucks. Spongebob doesn't have a story, but he's loved as always, gumball didn't have a story until like the last seasons but people still loved gumball. Do you ever think why everyone likes craig of the creek so much? Lore, story, even tho it's very similar to Clarence. I love Clarence and uncle grandpa and idk why they were hated. They showed that not every cartoon needs to have lore to appeal to the audience. Audience? You mean kids? Kids don't care about the lore and stuff because they don't always watch tv and they don't know what a streaming platform is. They think that when they miss an episode of their series on tv, they're just going to wait for the rerun and if they don't, well they just don't watch the episode and go on with the story. But that doesn't happen with Clarence because every episode is fresh and not repeating
it was relatable in only that aspect for me, i couldn't really connect personally with any of the characters and the art style and humor just wasn't my cup of tea
it was relatable in only that aspect for me, i couldn't really connect personally with any of the characters and the art style and humor just wasn't my cup of tea
As a young parent with 2 kids I love all the 90’s and early 2ks references and things that slip right past the intended audience. They made a show enjoyable for the whole family
I loved this show. It's not a show that I can call "my childhood", but I really enjoyed it. It was chaotic, somewhat realistic in terms of Clarence's and his friends' home life, and it was sort of an outlet for me to release my crazy side 😅
Pretty much, TTG is still running since kid's love that show, but i actually enjoyed Clarence. It's sucks to see it go. TTG is just overrated, BY A BUNCH OF KIDS. Of course Clarence was underrated....
Me: Use reverse card Clarance: Hated CN: You're getting a movie! TTG: hated CN: sorry but you're out overall i really like clarance i mean its one of my favorite shows...
This show really reminds me how fun it was being a kid and how relatable it was. Almost a lot of the stuff he does is what I used to do when I was a kid. Especially the play place at a restaurant ~ My little brother watches this show a lot and it's funny to watch ~
I remember when this first aired, the antics of the characters brought me back to my time as a child and the fondness of everything in the show made me love it instantly
@JAD ESMAEL HOLY CHRIST, can we all shut up. Nobody is right or wrong I don't like Steven Universe as much as the next guy but let's not bash people for saying it. (Don't) Like Clarence? That's fine (Don't) Like Steven Universe? That's fine life is about opinions so let's not complain when someone doesn't agree alright?
@JAD ESMAEL " shut up steven universe was one of if not the best show on CN and it had to better than clarence if the show ended a coulple months ago" HMMM..
You know, as someone that wasn't a big fan of Clarence back in the day, I think it says a lot about how memorable the show was when I can recognize every single clip you used in this video and the plot of the episodes they came from
Why would people hate this show?? It's literally the embodiment of innocence: like you said, it really did a good job portraying children, and I would even say neurodiversity. I couldn't watch it without having a dumb smile on my face.
Clarence was honestly good. It’s portrays real life and what it’s like to be a kid through its writing, humor, and art style. I do think that some shows from this era were better, but in all honesty, this show is pretty good.
I think it's silly that some people criticize children's cartoons like they're Evangelion or something. But at the same time, I kind of sympathize with their point. SpongeBob and so many other animated shows manage to be appealing to adults while being a kids' show. And that's pretty much always a good thing, I guess. I see your point. Never really cared about TTG but people always say they hate that show as if it's some sort of unpopular opinion.
@@mat2468xk Well, people treat it like an unpopular opinion because of people who use the excuse that it's a kids show and we should be soft on it. Shows like early Spongebob and Transformers Prime are excellent examples of having moments that kids will enjoy and adults will understand. Then there are shows like TTG and the early-new Spongebob episodes (the newer ones are getting better) send messages to kids like we should keep our rooms trashed and that it's okay to abandon a city to burn a Wicker Man of the person you left behind and dance on the ashes. We're not gonna leave these cartoons alone. Why? Because we don't like them. If you are against a cartoon I don't like, then that's fine.
Children deserve to have masterpieces, but I know what you’re saying lol. People shouldn’t be so analytical and serious when critiquing shows that are clearly meant for kids.
Personally I consider Clarence along with Ben 10, Samurai Jack, Adventure Time and Gumball as one of the most important shows to ever come out of Cartoon Network. Though unlike those shows, what makes Clarence so different and unique was that it was a show that was trying to be its own thing without being so loud and complex. I mean it did have it’s gross moments but the stories were laid back and it took slice of life ideas and nostalgic moments in our life while also reminding us why we didn’t understand what made the world work, weither it be pretending, the best of a bad situation, trying new things, dealing with poverty to just learning about romance. It’s just an accurate representation of childhood. Man take me back to the years of 2013-2015
You forgot to talk about the tragedy of Joshua. His life was going fine and he worked in a grocery store until his life was ruined by Clarence and by the end of the show he had become overweight, homeless, and joined a chicken nugget cult.
I remember that when this was airing, I was starting to feel really jaded towards kids animation, hating the newer shows like "Breadwinners" and "Teen Titans Go." I didn't feel that way for this show, though. It was one of the only ones I actually remember not hating.
I am not an American and my childhood was not like Clarence has but everytime I watched the show I felt happy, familiar. in a common way we just emphtzyed with the kids (when I was a kid and now as an adult) and actually felt like free and naive kid. I think there is not just 3 characters that we can only love. every character in clarence is just diffrent and natural. everyone can find themselves in at least one of them. I wasn't know that there is some people just hated the show...
It was a truly slice of life show, if you don't like the pacing of those types of animations and basically just accept Clarence's character for what he is then it is highly doubtful someone would like it. I personally did because it was one of the few shows ever which showed a "no collar" type of family and still the only one I can remember being out there.
"The animation was unrealistic!" So is Adventure Time, OK KO, Steven Universe, and Regular Show, and yet all were great shows. Erm.. Did I start a comment war?
@@carabibi2913 maybe next time you should respect peoples opinions. because acting like an idiot and saying "HoW dArE yOu sAy StEvEn uNiVeRsE iS tRaSh" is annoying
I related to this show so much. It really captured the fun that kids have from their own point of view. The world building especially felt so real with all the beat up chain link fences and random characters you can only wonder about.
My favorite part about Clarence was how relatable it was and how detailed it was. Like in some show if they draw an alley, it would just be dirt between two fences. But on Clarence, you would see crushed cans, weeds, tires, and trash on the ground. And I like how Clarence sees everything as a good thing.
I remember being a kid and watching it when it first came on, when we still had cable. Soon after we got Roku, and it left my mind. But I remember the vibe of the show, and it remembering it really does just feel like childhood. Because it seems to do a good job on the watching it as a kid and laughing as the gross-out humor and stuff, and then watching it when you understand what’s going on. I’m probably going to watch it again, because I did really like it.
I've actually adored Clarence right from its pilot. Seeing a kid character who is so unapologetically in love with life was just charming, and his demeanor, while yes obnoxious, was quirky and charming. The dynamic between the main trio is great and well-developed, and as you mention the show's continuity, while not being a plot driven show, was fantastic. Also...the people who made this show clearly love their horror movies. There were horror homages, episodes with a surprisingly dark tone, and...everything to do with Gilben. As an adult and a horror fan it made me appreciate the show on another level.
This is genuinely one of my all time favourite cartoons, I love how silly and unique the style is and the comedic timing and humour is absolutely fucking hilarious man- I truly don’t understand why it gets so much hate there’s so much care and fun put into it’s creation and it’s just such a fun time
YES! I loved this show, especially Jeff and the teacher. I am a germphobe and high achiever I always feel like Jeff represented that type of child well. It wasn't used as a 'this child is pretentious' it's just something the child dislikes, that doesn't stop him from having fun he just has his own way of showing it
Clarence is a lot darker than it is it showes problems with/ having fun with friendship, relationship, trauma, hygiene, family, creative, independence, anxiety, and so many more this show was very heartwarming and really relatable and a reason why its so good. Clarence sees everything something you can build a beautiful thing very spontaneous. and Jeffs control freak and why hes like that sumo with his family relationships and how it reflects on relationship honestly every character has that and its very good written even the background characters very entertaining.
I love Clarence so much. It’s the only cartoon that I’ve seen that really represents growing up in lower middle class. Clarence is a fun kid, who still actually acts like a child compared to other cartoon children in other shows.
But I remember in a 1991-1998 series that aired on Fox Kids, (and I know that there not actually be one, but I remember it very well. Hell, or it maybe was just a fever dream that took place in my early childhood) Clarence was portrayed as a nice and smart, sometimes dull and mean character. His voice was much more different, his appearance was much more shorter, his shirt was fully green, and he kind of had a look that resembled garfield the cat. I don't know if it was real, or maybe it was just a weird fever dream if mines.
I absolutely love this show, and I think it's actually extremely realistic while still being silly. And I love how all the settings are kind of run down and dingy, and full of detail. So much that you sometimes have to pause or rewind just to catch everything. You don't get that with a lot of cartoons. Also Clarence's mom kinda thicc.
Clarence was one of my most favorite cartoon shows because it shows friends having fun and going on adventures together that i never get to have since i've been alone and i didn't really had friends.
I love how “trashy” the world is in Clarance it gives off Ed Edd n Eddy or Invader Zim vibes but it’s also uniquely childish with the bright colors and simple shapes
The funny thing about that is those two shows are very loved, yet this show is actually really close to those 2,especially Ed,Edd,n,Eddy so I think it’s honestly weird for that to happen.
I just love this show. As a kid I thought it was funny and just extremely likeable, as I’ve grown up I saw so much heart and creativity into the characters and episodes. The episode “dream boat” was one of the most heartwarming and well executed character studies with sumo and his relationship with his dad and friends. This show is full of little amazing moments and great laughs
i absolutely loved clarence. I grew up in south ga and being a trailer kid with so many siblings, I saw myself in Sumo and my friends in the classmates. The adventures, the dumb confrontation, the silliness of it all; it just reminded me of everything about my childhood
“THE ANIMTION IS UNREALISTIC” Me: but all animations are unrealistic “IT ISNT EXECUTED WELL” Me: nothing is executed well Him: nothing Me : ok Edit : haha
I think what they talking about is, the pose is not really that realistic, 30fps feel like 15-20fps And no, saying everything is not executed well is just like saying Pokemon bw2 is not executed well so it's an opinion, ngl Clarence is executed well for children under 8, if you wanna say Clarence is underated, adult/teens don't like it and they all have phone/social media, if every kids have phone/social it's not that underrated 🤷♀️
@: 3 well, I can really argue with an opinion, im a type of person who priotised animation quality (bruh I should add imo in my previous comment) So both of us have biased opinion
I fucking love Clarence, I remember binge watching the show on lsd and sometimes it made me cry with nostalgia of being a kid, nothing comes close in bringing out that inner child in you.
One of my favorite episodes was when Jeff and Gilben shared birthdays and were celebrating it at the same place, and then Jeff got jealous and tried to fight him, meanwhile Gilben was doing some voodoo magic stuff pummeling Jeff into pulp
I actually prefer clarence over the regular show especially because it was realistic and relatable unlike the regular show which was filled with space ships and portals. Clarence had a good main concept thats why i liked it....and i still do.
I seriously can't relate, my sisters and I bonded over this show. It didn't really matter if we felt it was random, it just feels homey, raw and funny, like a fresh breath out of Steven Universe honestly.
dude same. me and my sister had a better connection while watching this show because how childlike it was. it shows issues and things but colorful and happy as a child would see it. it made my connection with my letter sister so much better and it did not deserve the hate
its just one of THOSE shows. colorful, fun, childish and just i can’t explain it.i have the same feeling about this show as i do with the amazing world of gumball, kaeloo, adventure time and its just a show thats FUN i cannot explain the feeling i have for these shows its so weird but it just makes me happy
Clarence was one of the few cartoons my dad would watch with me, he heard a joke that sounded funny and decided to watch it with me and that’s rare for him to do. Whenever Clarence was on I would tell him he’s on and he would get giddy about it. He said it reminded him a lot of stuff he did as a child and the fact that Clarence was not the brightest but nice enough to want everyone to have fun was really nice and endeared my dad to it.
If Clarence wasn’t ugly, people would’ve loved it. I swear. Because they touched on very progressive topics in an extremely subtle, non-pandering manner. It would’ve been a lesser version of Craig of the Creek. I think people should give it a lil more appreciation.
Clarence feels like a kid, though, in terms of his absurdity. Craig, to some extent, is the same, but he's much more serious than Clarence and I think the show has a serious undertone to it that makes it different from Clarence.
to be fair it doesn't inherently focus on the art style but by the depictions and the series as it goes on,sure if you think the art style or if thats what you're talking about is _eh_ then thats okay but they're just kids having fun, living life as a child and sure it may have some sensitive and immature topics but kids like that are practically mutual as a dude who can relate to clarence.and wel you know besides other cartoons where you're a kid and gets traumatize now that you realize you fought like 3 gods because you're mom was tired of all the bullshit. All and all I do think both shows are good.
Yeah I loved this show whenever I was younger. There were still many CN shows better than it but it was alright, and as someone who grew up in a lower middle class household I also found it to be rlly relatable.
