Hey its RaganSmithGymnastics! This will be my alternate channel, for now I'm going to try and post videos with Olympic coverage.
I think the scoring at this Olympics was very harsh, the highest E-score in event finals was only 8.233! I think Lu Yufei was judges very harshly for a beautiful routine in qualifications which only got an 8.1 E-Score and made her get 2 per countried out of event finals. Comment down below what you think!
** I do not own this coverage all credit goes to the IOC **

8.1 e score on beam was not specifically low - it was all most of them were getting. So it would be the hit to the D score probably that hurt her.

Yes. You can take deduction on all of that. But, compare to other, that score definitely very low.
@Zuranthium

"Slow connection" is idiotic, it should only be assessed by the difficulty panel, not given double deduction on execution. That first pause deduction is undeserved. The dismount step was definitely not a "large step". And the routine doesn't show a lack of fluency. Very underscored.

The Olympic judges were brutal, for sure!

Brutal with some, a sweetheart with some others.

Brutal on floor especially, some on beam, but they were quite lenient on bars

I think anywhere the judges could take off for connection value, they did. Many of her connections reminded me of 2009-2012. Beautiful, but slow.

Sorry it took so long, I had to try six different methods to bypass the copyright claim. I think you are only allowed to use small clips at a time, which is why I cut out all of the choreo. Comment down below what you think!

I think i like it better without the choreo tbh. At least for these kind where it goes through the routine twice!

My video request would be Melnikova versus Urazova. Who deserves the bronze? For me it was Urazova but I would love to see a video comparing the two of them.

Can you do her team finals floor routine as well? I thought her execution was hammered so hard, which surprise me because she stuck almost all her landings and they wasn't any major visible errors. I thought her execution in that routine would've been in the 8.1-8.2s for sure, or even higher, so I was shocked when a 7.966 came out

Those connections were going to sting. 😬 Arguably, she could've lost every B element tacked on (straddles, splits, BHSs, etc.)

I’m okay with harsh execution deductions, but only if it’s applied equally. The U.S. and Chinese gymnasts were scored much more harshly than the European gymnasts throughout the entire Olympics. It felt like the judges were trying to make a statement or something. Similar nonsense took place in rhythmic gymnastics, except the Russians were the target of borderline vengeful judging. I’ve noticed that these scoring controversies in subjective sports tend to rear their head at the Olympics, as we’ve seen in figure skating as well. I don’t think it’s coincidental because what better time and place to engage in corruption than at the most important competitions in these sports, where you get the biggest bang for your buck?

Concerning rhythmic gymnastics, I've heard multiple people, certified FIG judges who write on forums, finding scores coherent with those given by the judges. If anything, the Russian were overscored in execution (and, arguably, even in difficulty). Ashram wasn't given more points than she deserved, she was the best that day adn her criteria were almost always perfect. The twins instead were unusually imprecise and lost many AD and risks because of incorrect criteria. I think this was one of the best-judged competitions of this quad. What Russian fans should complain about is how overscored they were throughout the quad, not how underscored they were at the Olympics. And concerning the team competition, the gap was so wide both in qualification and in final that I don't think there's any need to discuss, the ranking was clear. Bulgaria has always been a string competitor, whereas Russia in the last years seemed to be getting less and less stable. There were not major errors from the top three teams, and it's clear that everyone deserved the place they got. Russia wasn't penalized, look at the execution scores they got, 9.5??? I don't think I've ever seen such a high score in the last years. Maybe this time the judges couldn't make up difficulties and chose to be more objective. The only people who complain about the result are biased (usually) Russians who don't know anything about the CoP and think that just because linoy had a loss she doesn't deserve gold. It's totally hypocrite from them, since Russians won many world and Olympic titles with mistakes.

I agree with this. It look like judges were so harsh toward some gymnast( especially chinese) and generous to other.

i wouldn't be surprised if more of her deductions were related to bent legs. her natural leg shape lends to those deductions. she has bonier/more prominent knees

As a non-gymnast who loves gymnastics but doesn’t know some of the technical stuff, can you explain to me the purpose of arm choreography? I’ve noticed that some gymnasts have very little, but some have TONS (like MyKayla Skinner). I personally find most of it awkward and distracting, so I want to understand it better so I can enjoy it more 🙂

I’m also a non gymnast who loves gymnastics, and I think the gymnast doing only arm choreography are the ones that don’t spend to much time working on presentation and don’t have a very developed sens of artistry. It’s easier, not exhausting and don’t take too much concentration so allows to focus more on your routine, especially if you don’t feel super comfortable on a BB, something I can imagine lol. I think bb is becoming more and more about « arms choreography » and that’s why old style routines were so much more beautiful, fluid and floaty. My thoughts, maybe it’s bullshit haha idk. Ooh also I wanted to add that it allows the gymnast to « stay in movement » and don’t lose points on pauses like on this video. As I don’t know if my English is understandable I got an exemple : Aliya Mustafina used to do tons of arms movement just before her dismount on beam, to take a break and focus on it.

Usually it’s to project a sense of flow through the routine. Other gymnasts (like Shawn Johnson) have a lot of arm movement as a balance aid. For example, you will see a lot of gymnasts immediately move their arms over their head or down beside their legs after completing a skill because it keeps them balanced and prevents more visible balance checks

Can you do Simone BB. Cause I definitely don’t think that routine deserved 2 points off in EF.

She was not a natural Beamer, she was always a bars/floor specialist. This year her coaches added in all these connections which I was saying for months were too slow. It’s a shame Li Shijia didn’t make the team because she has the fastest connection speed of all the Chinese beamers
@Zuranthium

This was a wonderful routine, only the back handsprings were "too slow". And there shouldn't be an execution deduction for that anyway, only difficulty score.

Can you please make a video about suni Lee's bars final explaining what errors she made? I'm just a gymnastics fan and I can't understand what happened during her exercise 🤔😅

She didn't make two major connections and lost quite a lot in difficulty

I think she’s really slow at making those connections, if she doesn’t pause when she flicks her hands back she may have got all 1.2 cv
