Maybe Moses started late so his children would be free

Moses was already free by his 40s according to the show and immanicpation had already taken place. So any children born after immancipation was free. So for about 40yrs they have to figure out why he didn't have any!
@WVgirl1959

@@jennaveehayes3011 he was born in 1820.

@WVgirl1959 Год назад
@@jennaveehayes3011 emancipation might or might not have began in 1865, but that still would only make him 45 at emancipation.

@@fabriennealexander2254 yes, since he was born in 1820 that makes sense. Or he hadn't found the right woman. 😊

In those decades, some men had more than one wife, especially if the first died in child birth or from an epidemic or whatever; so, it could be that in this census they are looking at a second or even third wife.

What happened next.? So interesting. Unfortunate your grandfather the teacher was judged by Alabama justice system. Where did they move after prison and did he continue as an educator? Life was so unnecessarily complicated for our ancesters.

If he was listed on the 1900 census as being in Wetumpka, Elmore County, Alabama, we can assume he went from Tuscaloosa to Wetumpka between 1870 and 1900, but probably closer to 1870, if only to get out of Tuscaloosa after he was cleared of the gambling charges. We can also assume he remained a teacher simply because teachers in freed communities in Alabama were few and far between at that time. It would be fascinating to know what happened in the 30 year gap, though. I would hope he met his wife in Wetumpka, had all of those kids, taught school, and died a really old man surrounded by his very large family.

I’m disappointed that they didn’t finish more of his story, I was very interested in hearing more of what happened to him. Like why he was placed into prison, and was it for something he never did wrong. I felt like I was left hanging and definitely wanting more.

In my ancestry search, I’ve found men (enslaved) with multiple wives because they (the men) were sold to other plantations. I completely understand Moses’ story and why he would have had so many children when he was so old. In addition, I also believe that if his children were born after 1861, he wanted to ensure that they would be BORN FREE.

Do not let these gatekeepers do your families Genealogy. They will always, always, mislead you. They never even bothered to let Ms. King know about the other great people in her family. It's absolutely sickening and, definitely done on purpose.

He probably had many children being inslaved. Moses married his wife in Mary Meadows 1871. He had 5 children in 1880. He was a farmer only.

Moses could have had other children earlier but was sold away from them or they sold away from him.
@Smokestacklightin

It is most like Moses had a family long before this marriage. It was very....common for men especially to have had multiple sets of families with multiple wives. Women died often during childbirth and there was so much seperation during enslavement. A way to possibly track his bloodline would be through dna. There's also the slim chance that there may be details in some court recods pertaining to the owner. Moses may be listed in such records such as wills or bill of sales should your search lead to find the owner which is always a must in researching African Americans during the years of enslavement. Im the product of many second sets of children on both sides. My father was a second set...his father a second set. Which means my great grandparents were enslaved for over 30+ years. He was 130+ years older then myself.

@SharonDoucette
@SharonDoucette 10 месяцев назад
I’ve been researching my ancestry for about 25 years. One thing genealogists tell you is that although the names aren’t spelled identically there still may be a connection. Crosby, Causby or Cosby could all be related. In my family on my paternal grandmother’s side, there are Hagans, Hagens, Haggins-all related by blood. For whatever reasons sometimes family members may alter the spelling of their names or it could be attributed to a misspelling by the individual recording the data. In my late husband’s family, some of his relatives spell their surname’Doucet’, he spells it ‘Doucette’. He said that when he joined the Army someone change the spelling of his name and he just went with it. His siblings all changed the spelling as well.
