I'll probably be condemned to hell for this, but here it goes. I crossed the picket lines and saw the movie on it's original release in 1988 - and was so disillusioned by the fact that despite all the press, the picket lines, the people carrying condemning signs, and the most amazing of all, people outside the theater kneeling in front of a giant cross, when the movie started I found out that it was just-----a movie. Because of all the ruckus, I decided to shell out the money and buy the book which was now back in print. And the book? It's one of the best books I've ever read and one of the most sincerely religious things I've ever read. Unlike the Bible version, I so badly wanted this version to keep going. When it was time for Jesus to meet his fate, I remember feeling so bummed out because I knew the book was going to end soon. To this day it still ranks as one of the best books I've ever read - and Kazantzakis is one of my favorite authors as a result. Skip to 1999. The Criterion Collection released a laserdisc version with special features. Thinking they would talk about the controversy, shelled out the money. Nope. Not at all. So I figured if I spent all that money on it, I should at least watch it once. I did. Years away from the controversy and this time watched it as a movie - and loved it. It is one of the most intelligent religious movies I've ever seen. I've seen it probably 7 times through the years. For me it has a Fail Safe on it - meaning when I get to a certain point of the film, there is no turning back. I just HAVE to watch the rest of it. And each time I watch it it so astonishes me why It was THIS particular movie that caused all the firestorm. Why didn't these same people say anything about Mel Brooks' "History of the World"? Didn't that movie actually make fun of the Last Supper? I truly think this movie would only make people more interested in Jesus and his teachings - but to this day there is a group of people condemning it without actually seeing it. Shesh.

Sensibly explained. Thanks. The part of the movie I found most notable was when (I believe it was that PR man Paul) came around preaching what he claimed was Jesus message while Jesus was witness to the words and pointed out that what he said was not correct, and Paul responded something like "who cares, nobody wants to hear what you used to say", or something similar. That is how 'the church' that people control organization still operates, child molestation etc included.

THAT IS the most controversial scene....or should have been, but wasn't because, clearly, most of the people criticizing the film did not even bother to watch it. People who follow the dogmas-of-religion (and not the supposed 'master' portrayed)often behave childishly and ignorantly. The book and film are brilliant in bringing Jesus' message home to each individual, which is where it is supposed to be laid.

I always had a particular sensitivity to Christ. I was born and raised a Catholic, but even at a young age, I felt there was a more profound mystery to the Christ story than what was being taught to me. I read The Last Temptation in my 20s, during a time of great personal change and hunger for God. I found the version Jesus portrayed in its pages to be the key to the central mystery of Christ. The entire point of the redemption IS that Jesus took upon himself all of our darkness and pain. By refusing to accept that Jesus suffered all of our physical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological pain is to miss the entire point of his sacrifice. He literally walked in our shoes to save us. In the end, he overcame the monumental, torturous temptations of the enemy because of his love for humanity and for God. If this was not a agonizing struggle, why would he have perspired great drops of blood in Gethsemane? Why would he have wrestled with terror and doubt in the garden? And on the cross? “Eli! Eli! Lama sabachthani?” He FELT FORSAKEN! If it was an easy, effortless mission, where would be the unfathomable value in his sacrifice? I don’t see any blasphemy in this.

It's still baffling why it was controversial. Christian dogma says Jesus was both human and divine with everything that entails. And at the end he "repents" and it turns out it was all a dream and dies on the cross. So there's no blasphemy or heresy. Now, I've never been crucified, but I wouldn't find it difficult to believe that those who have been, life flashed before their eyes in those moments of agony and imagined all the what ifs scenarios, regrets about choices made etc. But in the end they'll still die on the cross. Their moribund reveries are theirs alone.

the last temptation was one of the reasons i went to look back on the holy scriptures as someone who had long stopped believing in god. and is one of the biggest reasons i'm christian again. it's sad to see that the church has never been able to face and understand criticism in places it definitely needs it. i am to this day a big fan of this work, and works of people like freud and nietzsche. it's through their criticism and challenging the ideas of christianity that i understood the real value of it. the church needs to understand that it's interpetations of the scripture aren't that much superior to everyone else. when i was faced with accepting their version of it and not believing in a god i took the second option, and it took years for me took back on this religion and understand the problem isn't the scripture, it's their interpetation of it. the last temptation is a masterpiece.

Whats the point? The Gospel whether you believe it or not claims to be a historically accurate take on the character and events surrounding Jesus’ ministry. TLTOC claims to be a fictional work from the imagining of one man. Why would anyone choose the later over the former. It will never and can never compete with the cultural and spiritual impact of the Gospel and it admits to being false witness. For those who say it helped them relate by presenting a “human” Jesus. The humanity of Jesus is all over the Gospel. If your Church never explored it then read it for yourself. The apostles and common people also present relatable human figures in the narrative.

I love how Last Temptation basically constructs a story to explain the dissonance between “why have you forsaken me?” and “all is accomplished”. The fact is these two quotes come from two different Gospels. This is why they depict two very different attitudes from Jesus. Afraid and desperate in the first, confident in the second. But movies usually don’t care and just insert both in rapid succession, which makes the man sound confused to say the least. Last Temptation remedied by putting the titular last temptation in the middle, which explains WHY Jesus went from desperate back to hopeful.

I just saw the FULL movie...last temptation...a few months ago at Midnight on Hollywood suite.....I was blown away when an ''angel'' or nymph came to Christ as he was dying on the Cross ,and he had asked why the Lord had forsaken him.. She licked his wounds, clean ....She got him to perceptibly jump to a safe enclave...His soul was living there with a few adventures....When he was ''dying'' Satan came to him and in my minds eye ..I could see, he tempted him with multiple nymphs...and asked him to come with him....Then their were flashing lights ..oranges and reds...and he did go with Satan ...and that was the end of the Film...that was always cut froo the ages...It gave me cold shivers to see what happened to him..All my senses back this up...Its a fantastic film uncut....

In the book, the 'angel' is a 12/13 year old boy (as writer Kazantzakis always felt that a boy at that age is the perfect balance of male-female), but that wouldn't go down well in puritanical America,-a grown man hanging around with a young teen-- and Scorcese unfortunately lost his nerve and makes it a young girl (British, no less.) It was the one weak point in an otherwise brilliant adaptation of a difficult novel.

Message of Jesus The Prophets of the Old Testament such as Abraham, Noah and Jonah never preached that God is part of a Trinity, and did not believe in Jesus as their saviour. Their message was simple: there is one God and He alone deserves your worship. It is not logical for God to send Prophets for thousands of years with the same essential message, only to suddenly change it, claim that He is now a part of a trinity, and to stipulate the belief in the divinity of Jesus to be saved. The truth is, Jesus preached the same message as all the Prophets in the Old Testament. There is a passage in the Bible that really emphasises this core message. A man came to Jesus and asked, "Which is the first commandment of all?" Jesus answered, "The first of all the commandments is, 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.' "(Mark 12:28-29) So, the greatest commandment, the most important belief according to Jesus, is that God is one. If Jesus was God he would have said, 'I am God, worship me.' Instead, he merely repeated a verse from the Old Testament confirming that God is One. This aligns with the mission of Jesus, as taught in Islam, where Jesus was sent to the Children of Israel to confirm the message of the past Prophets - to believe in the One True God. "And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, '… Indeed, God - He is my Lord and your Lord. So worship Him alone. This is the only Straight Path.' "Quran 43:63-64 As an honourable obedient Messenger of God, Jesus submitted willingly to God's commands. As such, he was a "Muslim" - which refers to anyone that submits to the will and commandments of God. Jesus in Islam Jesus was as an honourable Prophet sent by God to call to the worship of God alone. This is evident in the Bible and confirmed by the Quran. The Islamic belief about Jesus explains who the real Jesus was, whilst maintaining the pure belief about God and His complete Greatness, Uniqueness and Perfection. We invite everyone to look further and investigate Islam. It is not just another religion. It is the same message preached by Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad - may peace be upon all of them. Islam means 'submission to God' and is a natural and complete way of life that encourages one to give due attention to their relationship with God and His creation. Islam teaches that God is the All-Just and All-Merciful and does not need to sacrifice himself to forgive sins nor is anyone "born into sin". God judges everyone based on their own deeds and everyone is accountable for their own actions. Islam teaches us to love and respect all the Prophets of God, but loving and respecting them does not mean worshipping them because worship is due only to God .

@@ibman8327 That Right! Same what the Bible says too. Hell is a place of torment (Luke 16:23) and “black darkness” (Jude 1:13) or “outer darkness,” where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 8:12, 22:13, 25:30). 1. Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 2. Psalm 21:8-9 You will capture all your enemies. Your strong right hand will seize all who hate you. You will throw them in a flaming furnace when you appear. The LORD will consume them in his anger; fire will devour them. 3. Matthew 3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 4. Matthew 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. Description of hell in the Bible Hell is described as a furnace of fire in Matthew 13:41-42: “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Matthew 5:20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Paul and his followers are lawlessness according to Jesus, that why Jesus will REJECTED them in the END. 1 Corinthians 9: Paul’s Use of His Freedom 19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law. Note: Jesus was sircumsice in eight days and Paul against Jesus therefore Paul broken God's covenant. Genesis 17: 9 Then God said to Abraham, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.10 This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.11 You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. 12 For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner-those who are not your offspring. 13 Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant. 14 Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant. Galatians 5:2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. Exodus 22:20 "Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the Lord must be destroyed." Qur’an 9:6 If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge. Islam gives you FREE will. The fact that God knows our choices does not make it any less voluntary. Although God wants people to believe in Him, He does not force anyone. If God willed, He could guide all of humankind, as He has power over everything. But in His Wisdom, He has created us with the ability to choose and made us accountable for our choices. God is not necessarily pleased with everything that He allows to occur. Why does God punish people?" No one can disagree with the concept of punishment, which is necessary for justice. God has created us with the ability to choose how we want to live, and in turn, be accountable. Those who sincerely strive to obey God will earn God's mercy and enter paradise. But those who are careless about their purpose in life and deny God, have ultimately made their own choice and will be held to account. No one can blame God. God did not create people to punish them - rather, He intends ease and mercy for them. The fact that God knows our choices does not make our actions any less voluntary and does not absolve us from responsibility. Islam is a practical religion that encourages a balance between hope in God's mercy and fear of His punishment - both of which are required to lead a positive and humble life. God is the Most Merciful but also the Most Just. If there were no day of Judgement, it would contradict the perfect justice of God, and life would be unfair.

Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time Luke 4 : 13 (nkjv) Ppl not interested in Holy Bible But only in expressing dir love of Christ but dir love is not based on HIS word. Which means it's a hypocrisy kind of love.. It's religious love not personal love of Christ... Other context here: and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace Heb 6:6 (nkjv) D movie not teaching ppl to drift away from Christ n come back as many times as possible... So it doesn't fit in for heb 6:6 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin Heb 4:15 Justify movie the last temptation of Christ. If any hv other openion... Can plz prov it by word of God Holy Bible... Old Testament n new testament... Making fun of Jesus or trying to express wat Jesus been tru... It depends on spiritual maturity of person watching movie... For kids it may feel making fun of Christ but a non religious person or spiritual person who demselvs have relationship with Christ (Messiah) it feels understanding d temptations of Christ n also courage for dir own personal spiritual walk with Christ will b strengthened... Since salvation is on going processes... Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling Philippians 2:12(nkjv) And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved Mat 24:12-13 (njkv) (love of many) Here love means real Holy Bible love: 2 commandments Jesus describes love God n naghbors Love God means: Love perfection of Wat God wants in scriptures : not religion/hypocrisy but Real holinness n spiritual relationship with Messiah n God the Father n His Holy Spirit In loving naghbors as yourself : 1988 ppl failed churches failed

Jesus: The Prophet In Judaism, Jesus (peace be upon him) is denied as the Messiah. This is in stark contrast to Christianity where he is worshipped as a deity, or the son of God. Islam takes the middle ground and acknowledges Jesus as an honourable Prophet and Messenger of God, as well as the Messiah, but Muslims do not worship him - as worship is for God alone who created Jesus and everything that exists. "(Jesus) said, 'Indeed, I am the servant of Allah (God). He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet.'"Quran 19:30. Acts 3:13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. Matthew 21:11 The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” Qur’an 2:136 Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him." Miraculous Birth According to the Quran, the Angel Gabriel was sent to Mary, the noble virgin, in the form of a man, informing her of a child who was to be born miraculously without a father. "He (Angel Gabriel) said, 'I am only a messenger of your Lord to announce to you the gift of a righteous son.' She said, 'How shall I have a son, seeing that no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?' He said, 'Thus (it will be). Your Lord says, "It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter already decreed." "Quran 19:19-21 Some claim that his miraculous birth is evidence of Jesus' divinity. However, Jesus was not the first to come into existence without a father, as Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) before him had neither a father nor mother. God says: "The likeness of Jesus before God is as that of Adam; He created him (Adam) from dust, then said to him: 'Be', and he was. This is the truth from your Lord, so be not of the disputers."Quran 3:59-60 If Jesus is worshipped due to having no father, then surely Adam is more deserving of worship since he was created without either parent. Miracles of Jesus Jesus was miraculously conceived with no father and also performed great miracles by the will and permission of God. He spoke as a baby in the cradle to defend his mother against the people who accused her of fornication. The Quran also states that Jesus gave life to the dead, cured the leper and the blind - all by the will of God. The fact that Jesus (peace be upon him) performed miracles does not mean that he was anything more than a humble servant of God. In fact, many Messengers performed miracles, including Noah, Moses and Muhammad (may peace be upon them all) and these miracles only took place by the permission of God, so as to demonstrate the authenticity of the Messenger.

Do you believe the crucifixion of Jesus happened bc, in the Quran ch 4 156, it says they did not kill him or crucify him also, can someone be a Muslim but not believe that Muhammad is a prophet because no prophet peached to be saved you must believe that Muhammed is a prophet or that black rock in mecca can forgive your sins?

@@eldiran2 - This movie is a abomination. Jesus didn't have kids or get married. If you think this is OK. What the hell is wrong with you. This movie should of never been made. It teaches false things about Jesus. And of course the devil likes that and he has people like you liking it. It's a sad thing. 😔

@@harrydaniels2788 Not true. You are one of those who clearly DID NOT SEE the film. It's called 'The Last TEMPTATION of Christ" for a reason--his coming down from the cross to live a 'normal man's' life and NOT have to follow through on his deepest inner calling was a trick of 'satan'...as it is for most people. He does NOT actually get married and have kids. (Although, on another subject, most historians agree that EVERY young man in that period would have gotten married, as it was the social norm.)

Jesus was shown generally but... Jesus deserves better.. Glorify Jesus as much as can.. Bcz Jesus deserves all glory... As much as he is been humiliated with cross bcz of human kind salvation... It's d responsibility of true Christians to gloryfy Christ too.. To the shame of the devil... Most importantly... Resurrection of Christ is same important as much as cross is important for any movie about cross... Glory is in resssurection of Jesus n in HIS eternity life of JESUS HIMSELF N ALSO IN HIS PROMISE OF RESURRECTION TO ALL TRUE BELIVERS/CHRISTIANS
