I feel like there was a lot of potential here but the execution just wasn’t there. At one point I thought maybe the brother would’ve been brought back since he was murdered, then it would a had some supernatural aspects to the film. That’s what I assumed woulda been the whole reason for the Aztec shit in the film

El Chicano is a cool concept just poorly executed. It would have done better as a crowdfunding fan film. PS I like think in my head cannon that Edward James Olmos was the real OG El Chicano that that other old Foo was his little brother covering for him. 😅

I went to see this movie based on the title alone because I was bored and my AC sucks ass. They could done way better, it's a cool concept but they made it too overly dramatic and cheesy while trying to tell a serious story. Would've rather seen "The Rise of Vato-Man" instead but hey, at least it was something to watch while I got good AC for an hour or so...

To be fair, Mexican people I know gravitated towards the Punisher from day one. I'm in my 50s. This has been a thing since the 80s with a artist named Mike Zeck doing cover art for the Punisher comicbook.

This could have worked so much better conceptually as low budget, modern gritty reimagining of Zorro.

I remember the marketing for this movie & how this is gonna be the first “hispanic superhero movie” before Marvel & DC. And ngl, I got sold on the idea & got hyped. Only to watch the movie & realize how messy it was. For me it felt like it was trying to be a superhero movie but also trying to be realistic at the same time & never knew when to mix the ideas together. Hopefully one day it’ll get a redemption arc & someone will do better with El Chicano

Its tough for us latinos when it comes to superheros or even supervillans. Everytime any kind of latino is in a superhero form of media (or most forms of media that have heros of anykind) its always Mexican gang members and sugar skull face paint. The last latino character I can think of is Bane and Bane in the comics is cool as hell and then in the 2 movies he's in he's a big dumb idiot (which he's not he's supposed to be batman's smartest supervillain) and then in Nolan's batman they made him welsh. At this point Id be 100% fine with just making a mexican vaquero in a giant sombrero and a bright poncho just going around shooting drug dealers while his personal meriachi band plays his theme song mid gun fight.

Great commentary, needs better background music. Maybe some random chicano rap basslines or accordion loops lol but the smooth cafe elevator music took away from the humor.
