Our no-till system has made is so there is a certain kind of tool that I no longer need (and maybe not what you think).

For those pesky potatoes and sweet potatoes - I wonder about something like a sort of removable raised bed type approach - probably modular to be manageable - once you harvest the crop and remove the “frame” the residual soil is just like a new layer of compost on that bed - if excessive you just scoop and deposit on adjoining beds ... would be quite compost intensive though ... the strange ideas that these videos lead to 😆

Thanks! The 4 row pinpoint has been a bust for me. I still love the flame weeder, with my compost at $60.00 per yard it’s a little cost prohibitive to always get enough over the native soil

Excellent videos! I may have already commented in a prior video on the versatility of a sod lifter in gardening. It's kidney shaped blade is welded on a bent rod that keeps the cutting edge flat to the ground. It can be rotated to use the blade for chopping, like an edger. Do you have a rotary plow for your BCS machine? That is a good attachment. I have an old Gravely, and the rotary plow can be used for edging beds. When set shallow, the blades can be adjusted to slice plants at the surface and throw them to the side.

You could start a business for people setting up no-till - you have to get to weed free somehow. All those things you need at the start so you could hire them out! Nice video. I’m starting a no till flower farm, and while I’ve yanked out all the perennials (grasses etc) I’m finding out how many SEEDS are in the soil. That’s where Neversink Farms wire weeders are really good!

Just seeing this, great video! Almost every video on YT shows you more tools you need, no one ever shows the tools you dont need! Brillant! I do still use the tilther and broadfork that i bought about 28 years ago, mostly for seed beds, carrots, but almost no cultivation so I hardly use the collinear hoe that got around the same time. I dont do much direct seeding these days, just seem to have more luck with transplants. Not that I don't have some weeds, but noticeably less weeds without the cultivation, Tillers and tractors stink, literally! "No-till" is where its at! again excellent video, thanks!

We till the first time because of rocks and clay, but after that we just amend the soil with compost and layer it. Been looking for a broad fork, but use a pitch fork for now.

I'm definitely glad I bought my tilther but now that I have things rolling a little better I haven't used it for the last few bed flips. I'm cool with that. I think if I try reducing the amount of compost I use(because I do want to try to become less compost dependent) I will probably break it out more. Honestly though I want to dial things in were I can do both, not tilther and still cut back on compost. So I like the tool but would ultimately like to retire it.
@notillgrowers
@notillgrowers 4 года назад
Hey Paxton. I don’t have any issues with the tilther, per se. I think it can be a great tool. We tested it and it really doesn’t go much deeper than a rake but it does tend to mix soil and compost if they come in contact.

Tools are as good as the user. Being in South Africa these tools are not readily available to us so I have made several iterations of the cultivation tools for our farm and we made our own broadfork. At the moment we are battling with packaging and efficiency in the harvest so I think I agree that when your worries move from cultivation to harvest its probably in the right direction. I made a video "Setting up a small farm" using Yeomans Scale of Permanence as a guide. If you haven't seen it check it out on my channel. Cheers

What if you make some type of wire basket with protruding handle up just above the soil level for potatoe/deep rooted items?? I'm talking big and deep enough, yet minimal wire for root distribution to house plants or taters without deformities.. 😊 Would that work maybe?

Totally agree with Marlon. The BCS is just an engine on wheels with a PTO--so many great (and increasing) ways to use that! Note that they are a show sponsor of our podcast, but I approached them. We love our BCS.

I'm a huge "layers" person in the cold. Warm socks. Good boots. Blanket pants. Sweatshirts. Lined flannel shirt/jackets, a couple of good hats. And always warm dry gloves. A sizable portion of my annual work clothing budget goes to work gloves. Ha! But I've noticed that I have used some tools much more than others, and will take your advice and not get the flamers, even though I love to play with fire! Nor will I get the power harrow or other earth moving tools for the BCS. Tempting though they are. ;)

I always imagine that instead of spending time and money cultivating, no till growers are spending time and money removing crop residue, spreading compost, sourcing mulch and so on. Exchanging one form of muda for another I guess. Do you have a feeling for how much non-planting/non-harvesting labor and expense you have now vs your minimal tillage system of the past? Understanding of course that the perks of no till extend beyond this calculus

Great question, David! I don’t have great data for that yet, though I want to gather some of the that for the coming season. It’s definitely a little more expensive per bed to start but we’re really not adding a great deal more compost than we were before per year (following JM’s recs). We’re just not incorporating the compost now so the bed prep is more or less the same but without the harrowing. Our planting hasn’t changed really, except there is not bed prep or stale seed bedding. Hm. With the flail mower bed flip our turnovers have become faster, but that would be the same in a min-till system. I’ll try to put some more thought and effort into this year, though. I think it would be a good exercise. Just writing the above out as I think about it. On the surface it’s about the same minus the regular cultivations but I’d need to really track a plot or two to know for sure.

@notillgrowers
@notillgrowers 4 года назад
Dude, that flail mower... we dropped it down a bit and it just flips a bed in literally 1 minute, leaving the roots in and mulching the surface. It’s amazing. Sometimes, depending on the crops, we can sow it before flailing, then flail, then that’s the whole bed prep. LOVE our flail mower.

I'm guessing most of your land has been worked and you are not starting from scratch in places. I'm still expanding my cultivated area and really use my Meadow Creature broad fork. My soil tends toward compaction too so I can't imagine not having the fork. I like to help friends get started in gardening too and the Kubota rototiller is a must have on some spots. Jump starting with the tiller saves a ton of work. Then, I haul them cardboard and wood chips to keep going.

In compacted soil or dredged soil that “one-time” tillage can be a huge advantage and set the farm up for a big start.

You know As you're talking about using the broad fork for harvesting carrots...it appears to me that some people use the broad fork for aeration mostly, and the also use radishes for biological tillers. So I'm no asking The question… don't carrots do the same thing as the tillage radishes? I've never used a broad fork before but I probably would not use one in the future
@notillgrowers
@notillgrowers 4 года назад
I’ve had this same thought and my Understanding and feeling is that tillage radishes have the advantage of decomposing whereas carrots will often survive in the soil and bolt in the spring which isn’t as helpful because now you just have a weed. I do suspect they help a bit with compaction but likely in denser soils.

For the first time ever I have tried no/ minimal till. I already see the minimizing effect of this method on weed pressure. I use the rotary plow to help make transplanting easier for me...but the remainder of the ground remains the same as before. Weeds grow back but flail fits perfectly within the Rowan easy-peazy. Flail gives me a mulch ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q7TR_rFUc0g.html

I just watched your Nov. 19 video and saw a Hoss seeder in the background. What do you think about them? I have a backyard garden 50 x 120 with everything from lima beans to carrots as far as seed size goes. I'm 69 years old with bad knees, and a seeder is starting to look pretty sweet. The Jang doesn't look like it will plant most of the larger seeds I use. One more question if I may. I'm in far northern Wisconsin, zone 4a, and would like to put down a cover crop in the fall but my first frost is mid-September. what would you suggest and when would I plant the cover crop so it gets established before the frost. Love your videos, Jess, just wish there were more. LOL

Sometimes wherever you purchase them will consign them for you (earth tools does this). Otherwise, Craigslist! Also BCS now makes a Precession Depth Roller that can turn any tiller into a tilther, so that could be an option too?
