For several years I looked at Catamarans and thought for sure that is what I would buy (Year 2020-2022). After realizing the premium on cats, I went back and reconsidered a mono. I put a short list of things I was looking for and one was "waterline" but still able to sail short handed and even solo. Last year I bought a 2007 Jeanneau 54DS that was in the NE and in great shape for roughly 250K. After a lot of projects and about 100K worth of upgrades I have a boat that will take me anywhere I want to go, is as roomy as a cat, I can single hand thanks to technology like autohelm and electric winches. Most of all she looks and sails great. As for speed 9-10kts motoring and sailing which is as good as many of performance cats and far better than the floating condos. Just another option to consider!
There is a lot that can break on that type of boat (and it will!) ....'everywhere' is of course relative since you cannot go too far north or south on a plastic boat and once you are in SE Asia; good luck finding (or even ordering parts) or getting something actually fixed on a boat chock full of tech
Well you for sure saved money and can manage a large monohull solo safer than a large cat. You won't have any issues repairing it in asia. Or anywhere for that matter.
you always get more for your money in a mono hull than a cat , real sailors sail monon hulls. A Have a 2016 jeanneau 57 and love , sailing is a lifestyle , if you worry about the coast don't do it.
Sorry to hear you keep getting sick. I know my sailing plans were derailed going into retirement. Cindy, my wife of 26 years, had one more year left before retiring. I hope you didn't do what my wife did back in 2020. She was the only one in my family to line up for it and a second round, not even my 70s parents did it. Afterwards my wife kept having one illness after another, always getting sick from something. I now have found myself as a widow at 55. Do everything you can do, naturally, to stay healthy. Even though you haven't found you vessel, I'm enjoying your world traveling.
I hear ya...it was an e vile glow ball a jen duh ... And it's done with the practice round and gearing up for the LIVE EVENTS... I hope you're ready solid metals and whatever else you consider important
Nick & Kelly are " The One," thank you for plugging us into your Matrix. We like being with you even if you do not have a boat at the moment. Chins up, there are a lot of people routing for you... Sometimes you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
I’m with you! Schlepping the gear from new/different country/international airports where you’ve never been, you guys are troopers. You know, when i drift off to sleep I remember a typical day on the hook in a shallow leeward Bahamian anchorage. I think it went wake up, swim, coffee, breaky, sewing seat covers, tacos, swim, beach, wine, jazzy guitar, g’night.zzz repeat - something like that. We have come a long way and we wouldn’t have guessed what you have done since. I feel like we are all richer for your work and willingness to share and impressed by your resolve.
Great to see a video from you guys, its been awhile. Personally I have never been in the market for a cat, I'm strictly mono. The monohull market has much more to offer and at much better prices. Just something to consider.
Could you guys summarize the past few years for us? How many offers you have placed, countries visited looking at boats? How many offers were accepted? And how many of those boats are still on the market? How many declined offers have reached out later to try to bring you back to the table? It’s all very interesting insights into the market. Thanks for all that you share!
Full data is available to clients, but I’ll give you the entertaining numbers…seen 26, 7 deals, 3.5 surveys. Only three boats we offered on and were declined then subsequently sold for more than we offered. How many countries….lol. A lot.
That was a very interesting perspective on the catamaran market. Also that's great that you are not charging your patrons while not making sailing vids. Hope you find your ideal boat soon.
Well, without picking on anyone in particular, I feel pretty darn rotten for some of these folks dealing with what looks like poor quality right out of the factory. It is doubly tough if you are going through this in public as we all are to certain extent with all this social media. Doubly hard because you don’t want to give your huge investment (boat) a bad reputation and you also (probably) want to keep a good relationship with the people you hope will fix the boat. But yeh…man o man I think I’d be lawyering up if I were a couple of these owners…
Well done video. AND. You had some fun too. When I wanted to sell my boat, I went to a brokerage and said that I wanted to sell my boat THIS SUMMER. I didn’t want to keep it another year. The broker said that he should be able to sell it “ within a year”. He didn’t listen so went to another broker and went through the same scenario. This guy listened ( what a concept). We had is sold in a month! Done. I was willing to bring the price down to a reasonable amount and it sold right away. I didn’t fight, grind, bicker, I sold the boat for a good price to a young coulpe that will really enjoy it. Win, win!
Keep up great reporting from so many interesting and sometimes beautiful location we've never had the opportunity to see first hand. Great intelligent info and we certainly appreciate your efforts to INFORM! FWCS. SAILING ⛵️
That’s generally how we do things as well. Decide to sell and sell at whatever the market will bring. I will never understand why someone would “hold out” for “their” price unless they aren’t earnestly trying to sell.
Guessing you guys aren’t interested in making weekly videos as you travel around the world…sharing location sites/info on the different countries u go to. I love seeing different countries I will never see in person.
A 58 ft Catamaran is a HUGE boat. My boat is a 34 x 14 foot cat and it is still a condo. Two actual double berths and queen size master. I am 6' 5" tall and the entire boat fits me well. Compared to a similar length monohull, well, there is no comparison. Have owned both. Love the cat.
We really appreciate the information you supply regarding the boat market. Thank you for all your efforts and for staying grounded and realistic. You really do supply valuable content, keep it up!!
Q: I'm looking for boats and there seems to be loads coming off charter in the Med around Greece / Croatia / Italy often tax free as they've been held inside a company. (Yes I know you have to pay tax somewhere - but it means you won't be paying it twice). Have you considered setting up base there for a few months waiting for the right deal as then you're only an hours flight away max. I'm sure you'll get a lot of patrons / viewers will ing to take you out on sails too! OR is there something fundamentally wrong with ex charter boats (other than obviously more engine hours and wear and tear).
You guy’s just want to let you know, I am in same situation as you …!!! I sold about a year ago at TOP of market “ridiculous “100k more than I paid for the boat in 2017…7 years I owned it..this is an incredible bubble.. about to pop.. !!!!! Hold off one more year
We did this 3x traveled were under contract twice, but it ended up not being the right time. We’re gonna wait two more years when our kids are out of the house and then we’re gonna try again. :)
Greetings, I'm looking for a 7-15 year old Catamaran Power Boat or Hybrid, or Sail, 44 to 55 ft, that I can convert to a solar electric cruiser. Ideally with a very large bimini.. What do you think will be the best way to find some boats of this age, that have older motors, and worn out rigging. Do you guys just search the internet? or have you got an army of sails people looking for you? Please advise.
The money is indeed doing well! Cheers, O'Kelly's! We're finally on a little catamaran (38' Ocean Twins, 1 of 3 produced from Pat Patterson, who also designed the Heavenly Twins). By no means is it a performance cat, but it seems to be a great place to call home and cruise around. The market is doing a fantastic job of paying for a few little needed upgrades, but the boat market? Yeah, you guys nailed it. We were set on over 40' until I stumbled on this reasonably priced little gem. Anything over 40' is 2-3x the price, without the build quality to back up such price points. Good luck, on your continued search! I'll be happy to buy you guys a beverage or brew up a good cup of coffee if ever we cross paths. Thanks for the content.
Actively watching cat prices since late last year, even the charter market sale prices are dropping (sort of stalled currently due to the summer hype, but will probably fall a bit more before the end of the year) on Leopards and Lagoons (can still even find some 2016 to 2019 powercats in the 40-50' range for under $500k if you're willing to look at former charter boats as well). The last pandemic was just one cause of the huge rush on supply, and now folks are realizing how expensive boats are, and/or have to adjust because of other financial or employment issues. So there is now actually a rather large supply of boats out there, as long as you're not chasing brands, but we all know cats will always be more expensive than a monohull.
I like your attitude what will be will be, go with the flow no stress. But bet there has been stress. So take it easy sit back the boat will come when it comes.
Wow haven't seen your videos for a while I turned on today and watch a video and when I look down under my coat I seen a picture of OKelly's that you sent out with your frist Roast that I bought. Nice to see you guys again
you two are just fantastic and I love your video's. It is really smart to hold on your money especially in vulnerable times. You two are really practical and it shows you are clearly making a good decision. I love your sense of humour in video's and keep up the good work Sheila Vancouver BC
"...and the award for best homespun production cinematography, music, and editing in the Travelogue category goes to: O'Kellys!" Keep being you, and thank you again for these marvelous tours of your journeys, by whatever means you take them at the time.
Thank you. We’d like to thank the academy, our agents Bert and Ernie, Robert Townsend, and all the boys down at Teamsters local 109… Lol, thank you. What’s life without a chuckle?
Funny how some people look at life. Obviously with all the thumbs up, I suppose you all share this sentiment. But let me enlighten you. Your assumption is that any time and money not spent on a boat is a waste. What an impoverished viewpoint. First of all, we have learned more about different boats, builders, designs and designers than we could EVER have had we purchased another boat right way. Secondly, we have spent incredible time with friends we’d NEVER have met other than through looking for our next boat. Same goes with all sorts of non-boating-related experiences. Last, as the boat market is shifting exactly as we expected, while the stock market has been better than we could have hoped for, financially we are way way way ahead of where we’d be if we’d bought a boat close to the top of the market 18-24 months ago. So…friends, life works out the way it does…being grateful for what does happen and NOT ungrateful or even regretful is the only way to be. Your thesis that we have somehow wasted time or money or both…doesn’t hold for us.
Nicely worded response. Like my mom says, nothing learnt is ever wasted. And as many savvy investors have pointed out, sometimes you save more from the things you don’t buy than the “bargains” you do.
Great video! I'm only interested in one model of boat but the prices are way to high on everything so I invested my money into precious metals which is doing extremely well. I'm thinking that the market is about to crash really hard and that precious metals will continue to skyrocket at the same time. When that fully takes place, I will purchase my dream boat and sail off into the sunset.
Awesome 👍 intro and super informative video. Just one question.... please tell me the most popular size or size range of catamarans buyers are looking for? Thank you.❤
Happy birthday Megan!!! 🎉🎁🎂 I liked the video anyway. You two have creativity, quirky humor and you're still informative. I'll still watch your videos when they come out. Whenever that might be... Thank you for your time and sharing with us.
Key points, budget, lifestyle and expectations. 500k boat 500k investments and a bank account to support that. Having freedom to be flexible to change is so important. A budget to maintain both must be a priority with expectations or All of it can be lost. Nick I don't like parking garages. Megan I hope this cycle of being sick finally passes. 2025 is around the corner. The current status of the world is going to be determined then. IT has to. Folks can't afford what is happening today. Over value by inflation isn't good. Most that have investments can't afford to take it out because taxes and inflation is going to eat it up. Love you guys ❤️ keeping everyone informed is so awesome.
Appreciate the update. I understand why you feel you have to do it, but it would be very useful to have, even a bit more detail, on the boats and deals that didn’t work out. It seems like misrepresentation of condition is the leading factor. I wonder how much of that is brokers (and that’s perhaps why so few people use them it seems), or the owners who use brokers? I have to say that so many online listings (for things other than boats too) are absolutely terrible. It seems like the big online sites are the wrong place to be searching for a boat.
We still like to hear from you both! And then the boat search is interesting. We love to see you survey boats. I personally love to see the different places you go. I would love to go to Japan myself.
I had this problem 13 years ago when I had decided I wantes a vintage 1989 Canadian Travel trailer. I drove from Massachusetts to Oregon to see one when the owner said now water leaks . When we arrived within 1 minute my daughter first walked in and saw a massive weak point in the wall which was collapsing. It happened 2 times where the ownihad okd pictures posted and lied about obvious water leaks that a 11 year old could find within a minute of walking in. I took a different route and went on the Fiberglass forum and called then out on their ads. Back then no Facebook. But I was pissed that I waisted time and money sue to people's dishonesty and misrepresentation of the FACTS of the trailer and condition. I didn't want what happened to me to happen to another person. Why are you deciding not to do this? Stick to facts of course, but why not call them out espywhen they lie..misreprsent the condition? Not able to negotiate a deal with price is different than fraudulently misrepresenting the facts on the equipment or the condition of the boat with old pictures or not publishing the negative pictures. Why not call some out so others dont have to go through the same expense? If we all do this appropriately we the people by demanding honestly will make people think twice before doing it. I vite to Spot light them and the boat
If someone selling a boat materially misrepresents the condition of the boat, as in your example you used of a boat with grossly misstated engine hours, why don’t you reveal these scoundrels? We’d love to see exactly why and how these owners and/or brokers are trying to cheat you and others. Save some poor schmuck the pain and cost of that trip to Tahiti for a fraud.
Well, they do a good job of indemnifying themselves on their listings. So they hide behind the IDK or I Don’t Know clause. lol. You know we thought about digging in a bit this time, making an example…nothing to stop us…it’s all true…but then we thought you know, that just stirs up a bunch of negative feelings and shames THIS particular broker and seller. But to be of true service to this community we thought it better to warn you that THIS TYPE OF THING is going on in the brokerage business, so whoever you are, wherever you are thinking of buying whatever it is…be careful! The sharks are feeding!
@@TheOKellys "caveat emptor" !!! I would like to add that I commend you for not seeking financial gain from your Patreons until you resume making sailing videos again - A classy move from two classy people x
I guess my question is why are you still looking for a catamaran, why not a bigger monohull so you can go sailing. I think the problem with the catamaran market is one the brokers want the max commission they can get but two people bought boats at high prices and financed them so they can’t sell them at a loss.
Not misrepresented, under 250 k , South african 39 " island cat" with plenty of space, semi custom one of a kind and only model nowadays in the US , turn heads everywhere for style and individuality! Get it now, will NOT be disappointed Ready to sell and pass on the honey Yep,sails fast too while well balanced, definitely not a production boat! Get in touch el ugo
Nick allowed Australia to be nuked?!? Where was the SEAL training? I know an electromagnetic pulse when I see one! And why was Megan being kidnapped in that weird car? Wait…you didn’t use AI to make that scene, did you? Further, DID the money use AI? If so, how do I teach my money that? The survey on cat seekers missed an essential choice for why not to buy…Weltschmerz! Have missed you too. (No idea how I’ve gone 9 days without noticing this episode.)
Interesting, because the housing market is slowing down. Buyers are disappearing and houses are staying on the market longer. Buyers are still wanting the higher prices and are not liking that their houses aren't selling. It is just starting in the home market. By the way, I enjoy your travel content just as much as the cruising videos.
Come on guys.. the search is getting a bit to long now! How about just picking up a nice mono hull and sailing around the Japanese islands. Would love to see that. I’m not in the market for a boat yet.. but I think cats are a bit over rated.
On YT channel "Shaman Adventures" guy in 2024 year bought from original owner a 1992 year Privelege 435 for a ... 100.000$😸. Owner wanted 120k, but dude done some haggle and owner agreed on 100k. And that cat was in good shape and in rare owners version. Meanwhile some broker sells usual version of same model - 2002 Privelege 435 for... 280.000$. To all: ignore catamaran broker company's and try to find owners selling boat. And trade, I mean haggle, don't just agree on prices they name.
How old are you both one of the last videos I seen you said you met as high cool or so but what threw me of was you said you guys grew up in the 80's I dought that I grew up in 80's and you both aren't my age I grad in 88. You guys dont look like your in mid 50's
Not a pilot but have flown in everything from a C17 Globemaster with the ramp open, vintage amphib and DC-3, a to a Cessna 172 and in various helos -- Chinook tandem-rotor as well as Bell and Airbus -- and have been up the Eiffel Tower and Toronto's CN Tower, all with no issues, but I still get the wobblies in high-rises.
Yes, don’t know what it’s about. No problems flying…I’ve done acrobatics, flown helicopters…..I enjoy the view….but put me on a building or side of a cliff and I don’t like it a bit.
You do realise that baked beans have gone up in price by 73% in one year. I'm not buying any until the price drops. You think I'm joking? Watch this space -> .
Thats not a flow its just scam. Aluminium boats are cheap when they are above 65 foot. But alu are by far not god as u believe. Best buy is a new Leopard cat or a Hanse Sailboat.
@@fluffi8161 Leopard are having problems at the moment with some new and near new built boats showing some serious construction and assembly problems..there are 3 possibly 4 on U tube channels that are out of SA that have had to carry out significant to major rectification work. 🤷🏻 Fastest quality build ive seen is the Windelos, 2 weeks but thats if they have a gap open in the calender schedule. Because of using basalt and their own system the boat hulls come out the moulds not needing fairing painting etc and assembling has all been worked out and tested before they commenced production.
@@fluffi8161 Good luck solving the hidden (and deadly) bulkhead issues almost all Lagoons suffer from. Lagoon is quietly paying of owners and fighting lawyers to prevent this debacle from hitting the mainstream.
The R&C problems are such a shame. But if you look at Seawind, HH and pretty much any other brand the YT channels are going bonkers about all the repairs needed on their brand new boats. I‘d always go with a well maintained used boat. Otherwise you‘re the beta tester.
I’d love to be spending more than a MM on a solar power cat. Problem is as good as the market has been, I’m still not able to spend that much….yet. Donate for a Dream
@Vallecaucanisimo just to make clear, from my part it was an honest question, not criticism. For example, would you rather go for a boat that's $50K cheaper but located on the other side of the world or go for a closer one that's more expensive? Or maybe a smaller but new(er) one? Once one budgets the cost of flying, accommodation, and the opportunity cost of time I'm not sure what the answer is. What I do know is that if something sounds too good to be true (e.g. way below comparative listings), it usually is.
I miss the sailing videos, but more than that I just want to see you guys happy. I appreciate the videos and insight you guys provide even if they are not always about how to fix something on a boat. Keep the positive vibes flowing and we will all keep watching!
100% agree with your take on the market. Cats are listing for higher prices now than they were 5 years ago. Not to mention some of them are 20+ years old and asking more than they were new. Sellers are fooling themselves. Anyway, my investment accounts have quadrupled in the meantime. Maybe prices will be back to reality in another 2.5 years.
It would be one thing if these boats were selling, but they aren’t. I have to correct myself…some are still selling at “unusual” prices, but many are just sitting. I think that there just aren’t as many buyers out there now…or at at least as many “I want that boat, no matter the cost” buyers out there. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.
@@TheOKellys I started looking in 2022, while in Antarctica, and immediately stumbled onto the O'Kellys...I can't help but to think that some of the market inflation is due to the effective and expanding success of the O'Kellys. We seekers now know cats are, well, preferred, especially for novices (like me). I do admire the freedom and apparent nonchalance you carry through your life/lifestyle. And of course, I hang on every video you 'Tube. Keep them coming!!!
OMGOSH I loved this video for so many reason! The introduction, was a grand slam! I just love your humor and could watch for hours! Enjoy your travel.❤
The money joke was funny. Didn't cross my mind as insensitive or tone-deaf but I can see how it could be PERCEIVED as gauche. I'm in the same position but with a house. I'm doing ok financially but housing is absurd. I'm with y'all in spirit. Love the vids. They are getting more entertaining and I hope you get a cat soon. :D
It seems to me that if your incremental cost of traveling around the world looking at boats Plus the lost RU-vid & Patreon revenue is greater than about $1,100/mo than from a purely financial perspective, you should have paid a $100,000 premium over what you think a 50 ft boat SHOULD cost. It's a simple math exercise. And the longer you go the bigger the financial hit to you.
A simple math exercise, eh? I’m glad you’re not running my business. First of all, revenue does not equal profit…not for any business I know. Second is cost of capital, which is extremely high right now…and extraordinarily high if one considers the opportunity cost in the markets of late. Third is depreciation which is double digit in the two years we’ve been looking. EBITDA margin, which I’ve never gone the trouble to calculate is certainly low single digits if positive at all for an endeavor such as ours. So…the simple math exercise you suggest confirms we’ve made exemplary business decisions. We sail, and make videos about sailing, for the love of it. We have tried our best to bring value to this community along the way…for the friendships and connections. That’s our why.
@@TheOKellys I used a reasonable cost of capital in my calculation, And of course revenue doesn''t equal profit,, ,but it's hard to imagine that with you flying around the world and paying for hotels and other housing that your expenses on the boat would be greater than they are now. I assumed conservatively that they would be the same. As to depreciation, that's a tax deduction or should be and I calculated that in my model. I think what you are missing is the lost revenue Payback on a reasonable premium would be pretty quick. Every month that goes by is revenue you'll never get back. BTW, I have made a very lucrative career in finance so I may know what I'm talking about. Obviously we all have different risk tolerances...... and you have to do you
I prefer these types of videos. RU-vid is full of sailing channels, but what you're doing now, market research, talking about offers, etc, very few are doing that which makes it soooo much more valuable. I still watch the occasional normal sailing video, but yours are probably the only ones I'm excited to watch, as I'm casually in the market as well.
ITts why I'm still watching - seeing misrepresentation is alive and well and market data - it's why I wouldn't wanna fly half way round the world. I'm in UK would consider Europe but going off to Asia or Pacific isn't an option... specifically as one of the reasons I want a sailboat is to travel the world without having to use planes! Would make no sense to rack up 20k miles just to get the boat first!
