I have the Rev and I am very happy with it, I am a service technician and I carry it with me so that I do not have to go to my van to get tools for every small job. It seems like the Rev was designed specifically for that. I use the ruler to measure bolts, I like to use the package opener, the screwdrivers are fine and the pliers are perfect for me. A technician also hates springback pliers by default (we use our little finger for that). So yes the Rev is 100% perfect the question is just for what kind of people.

It not having a spring back is actually the selling point for me.

The rev is great. People succumb to your opinion way too much. Something you missed is that the wire cutters actually cross on the Rev, like the Wave. The wingman and sidekick's wire cutters don't even meet. So you didn't demonstrate the cutters. That's a biased test. You can see space between them. That seriously affects their ability. I had a hard time even cutting snare wire and paper clips. It's a breeze with the rev. Next, I have edc-ed the Rev, and the opening isn't all that bad. I think it looks cool, and if you practice, it becomes much more dextile. Finally, that pocket clip detail was useless. Another biased and untested opinion. I carried the wingman for over a year, and the pocket clip had gotten so loose that you could rotate it easily. I've carried the rev for a couple months, and it is strong. I think that you need to actually carry a piece of gear for half a year or so, so that you don't have these untested opinions. As a gear reviewer your opinion should be based on facts or unbiased opinions based upon duration testing. Bad review of a great product. And change your title to, "Leatherman Rev: Why I Hate It".
@gideonstactical
@gideonstactical 8 лет назад
If you like it more power to you. The price/value/performance ratio is not there for me. As a gear reviewer to test something for half a year is impractical. I would post a video month or even less. The testing and use we do on this channel is some of the most tough and consistent around. But at the end of the day its just my opinion, you can agree or disagree.

I have all three and my opinion is the same as yours. I find the Rev. is in my pocket far more the either of the others. I feel it's a great multi-tool and I picked mine up for 29.99 well worth every penny. most the time he's spot on but please remember when you don't have to pay for stuff and you have hundreds of dollars worth of gear run throw your hands you can " bitch" about things that are not at all a problem. for 50% of the people he is saving them money. for me and you we just got lucky we actually got one to find we like it. there are others out there that will also see it and pick it up. they to will find that for them it's the right one. but I don't see it as the worst multi-tool ever. have you ever had a Gerber. they make some really good and quite frankly they very worst multi-tool out there

Yes, ppl often forget that some countries actually ban one hand open knife tools. Leatherman doesn't have same curtsy offered to it as victorinox where I live and law suddenly gets lot stricter when it comes to leatherman blades. Because they better, longer and thicker? Maybe, but police don't want you to open it with one hand, if possible not at all in public. Leatherman is just adapting to new markets with products like rev.

Considering that the Leatherman Wave in BCF sells for $199, with just the leather pouch :) I got a good deal! It shipped to my door within 4 days from over east, with full tracking history! I have used the package opener on the Wingman, and it does work, and it does help save your main blade, but it takes too much time to get to.I have to open boxes all the time, and found its easier to use a boxcutter. I would like to see Leatherman put a pacage opener on the outside of a tool that can be opened with your thumb, because on a day to day basis, I would get more use out of it.

Imagine shitting on a LEATHERMAN that costs 40 bucks, sometimes even less, the same price of knockoff multitools from China, that has the same steel quality as regular Leatherman products, and it's pretty affordable for the everyday person not willing to spend 200 bucks on a multitool. "Oh no I can't open the blade one handed!" And? Tell you what, in most European countries a blade that can be unfolded one-handed is considered a weapon, so I could carry a Rev around no problems. The package opener is great. Sometimes you just don't WANT to use your knife to open a package, given that you could cut into the item box, or even the item itself. So your complaints are "it's thinner than other Leathermans, it lacks a couple of tools, pliers don't spring, it has a blade I don't find a use for". Which is perfectly fine for a multitool, by a great brand, that costs less than a third of other ones from the same exact brand. All this for a clickbait. Get your shit together.

Good points on your review. I fail to understand why the Wingman's price has almost doubled unless it was because it was very popular and they wanted to cash in on that. The Rev lacks what is for me an essential 'office' use multitool feature, the scissors. In an office environment with coworkers who are knife shy, getting scissors out is much friendlier that opening that blade. For maintenance around the house, I will go with my supertool or regular tools.

I had the same issue with my wingman. The rev being thinner fits much better in my kit and always sits next to my fisher space pen in the fifth pocket of my jeans. My wingman or sidekick bulge a little too much in that small pocket but the rev tapers just enough to keep it lo profile.

Well in all fairness a pliers-based multitool is pretty useless in the woods, you can't undo nuts & bolts on a tree to obtain firewood or build a shelter. A Swiss Army knife with a saw is 100x more valuable for bushcrafters.
@LXT43
@LXT43 3 года назад
@@simonh6371 That's silly. Not everyone in "the woods" builds primitive shelters. As a matter of fact, most people don't. You can easily use pliers for many things. One of them is pulling hook out of fishes mouth. There's plenty of other reasons why long pliers are very useful. Swiss Army knife? The best thing on it is tweezers. That tiny saw on it will not build you a shelter. You bushcraft obsessed people are nuts!
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 3 года назад
@@LXT43 Of course, anyone with half a brain will take a poncho or tarp which will spare you hours of shelter building and will actually be waterproof, however a saw & knife is useful for cutting poles to shape & making tentpegs, likewise processing even small wood for a fire. The ''tiny'' saw is actually larger and more capable than on every single leatherman except for the Supertool 300 and you can cut through branches 6 in thick no problem. Likewise the small knives on SAKs are better than on most Leathermans. Yes pliers can be useful although the fish hook removal is pretty specific, and presupposes you have fishing gear and of course then you'd have a multitool in that. Pliers are not the highest priority tool in the outdoors, the Leatherman is best suited for urban environments in those limited scenarios where you don't have access to tools i.e. you're away from your home and vehicle.
@xmoroseguyx
@xmoroseguyx 8 лет назад
I do understand for the odd or occasional use the non spring resisted pliers may seem fine and it does mean there is no spring or torsion lever to break, But I have found using several multi tools based around pliers that those that have a spring back mechanism are certainly more desirable, And I have had them on multi tools from the equivalent of ten US Dollars, So I don`t think it`s just down to production costs with Leatherman not to fit one, I do think you are right in your review that Leatherman should aim higher up the market, There are numerous rivals making cheap copies so I don`t see why are they bothering, They won`t make much money and they hemorrhage desirability

I think the Rebar (which I carry daily at work) if you get rid of the serrated blade and replace it with scissors would be perfect. Small, compact, and full functionality of all the tools. I like the Wave (which I carry days not at work). It is a little bulky and I like the full screwdriver blades on the Rebar. I like the Wave's quick access to the knife blade but don,t use the other quick access tools (file, saw, serrated blade) all that often. It is still great design. The Rebar is almost as small as the juice and has way more function. One last thing for me and carrying a multitool every day. I'm not allowed to carry a knife on me at work (stupid protectionists call it a weapon) the slower deploying knife blade on the rebar is less threatening and appears more as a tool.

The Rev isn't much use compared to my preferred 300 but may suit VERY basic users who sort of want a multitool but aren't mechanics etc. I've used a wide variety of multitools in and out of the military and am a lifelong mechanic (aircraft, industrial, vehicle etc). It's an OK way to carry some screwdrivers with pliers but serious users are better off with a 300 EOD (I've worn out two so far, I'm not kind to tools). Having to use two hands to open a multitool IS an issue to this mechanic because I use multitools so often (despite having a very well-stocked shop, but that shop doesn't travel with me everywhere). I may be holding an object with one hand and need to switch tools, easy with a 300 and IMO Leatherman should have retained that opening style with the Rev. I'm glad my Rev was a freebie but I'd rather pay for a 300 EOD than get a free Rev. BTW I do not use my 300 EOD for anything tacticool though I do shoot and would certainly take mine into the field if I went there. (USAF maintenance deployments are vacations, not combat.) If you're a firearms enthusiast and not poor I strongly suggest the 300 EOD because in the field you won't have many tools at all and the difference isn't much compared to years of using the superior tools and superior selection of tools. Rev build quality is better than the original Leatherman and the screws far better than rivets. I disassembled my Rev to clean it using a Gerber tool with Torx bits. If I had the choice to design Rev again I'd add a file with a sawtooth edge but make the handles like the original Leatherman and the 300 though with the superior Rev screw bolsters. IMO every bolster should be removable which is the Revs best design feature for long term use because it's easy to tighten or clean.

Hey Aaron I bet they moved the opening slot to make it compliant with areas that don't allow one hand opening type blades...and it's also an attempt to produce an entry level Leatherman as an alternative to the imported and mostly inferior multitools that flood the market...the Rev is made in the USA isn't it? Anyways thanks for the heads up on this MT...as for me I'll stick with my MUT - my Signal and my original PST from back in the late eighties...

@enemysub9057
@enemysub9057 8 лет назад
John Corbeil As far as I am aware locking knives are not prohibited in Australia it's just that the situation concerning one hand opening blades is not very clear....you see customs prohibits some one hand opening blades but not others such as those on multi-tools and it isn't necessarily illegal to purchase one hand opening blades even though customs prevents the import of them. The Rev is quite easily obtainable from a hardware store in Australia and all the other Leatherman tools are still obtainable too but for how long? is the question.

Jacob Norman California has zero restrictions on one handed operation. They have some restrictions on springs/mechanical assistance, but as long as your required to touch the blade or direct extension of the blade (like the Ken Onion series) to open the blade, and it has a bias to closed position, it's completely legal.

Thanks for the video. It convinced me to buy the REV. It is the closest to the retired SIDECLIP which was my favorite from years ago. For old guys like me that just need a quick tool and do not plan to fall-a-tree or file-thru-prison-bars with my pocket knife, the REV is great. As for the lack of a spring in pliers I guess none of my other pliers have springs so the REV is more familiar in actual use. The different wire-stripper will require more attention to applied-pressure, but the other two look like that would work only for 14 gauge romex. The box-opener is most useful in opening electronics boxes which is 90% of what I open-- no danger of cutting a cord or nicking a screen. Oh, BTW, on most denim jeans like the ones you are wearing, the pocket-watch pocket has been deepened to accommodate pocket knives which save on wearing-out the pocket lip and probably keeps the knife higher and less likely to pressure up-and-out when sitting.

Hi, My first reaction was to dislike the video from the start but you do not deserve that treatment. You do good reviews of products and I value your opinion. However I do have some remarks. Before I tell you my remarks, here's some history; I have used (only) the original Learherman since the early 80s and I was satisfied with that. My house burned down 3 years ago and my Leatherman was lost. I needed a replacement. I bought the wingman. I did not pay attention and I do not like the serated blade. Furthermore my pocketclip is not steady; it moves. I needed another one. I looked at the Rev. (I got the scissors on my victorinox) I bought it. It has been my edc for about 3 years now. The clip is still solid. It does everything I need (like my original Leatherman). I actually prefer the pliers not to be spring loaded. For a while I had interchanged the blades thinking that the springloaded pliers would be a bonus. I reverted back. At the moment my Wingman is in my "mecanics purse" on my bycicle and the Rev is in my pocket. I am convinced that a Wingman or Sidekick does not outdo my Rev. I am convinced that e.g. a Wave would outdo my Rev but knowing that I can buy several Rev for the price of 1 Wave I doubt that the Wave would outdo me in the long run for the same price. Anyway, that's my humble opinion. Kind regards, Alain

Dumb review . I was on a budget and purchased the rev . Best purchase I have ever made . Because does NOT have spring loaded pliers the thinner "arm" makes it way easier to open and close the pliers with one hand . Also it is still a Leatherman its quality is basically not matched. Also I got mine for $25 ( normally $30) and the wingman is $40 and the side kick is $50 . For $10 more dollars ( wingman) you get spring loaded pliers and scissor , the problem is serrations . I would rather have the rev over the wingman just because of the straight edge . I probably like the side kick better but is $20 more dollars .

The hole in the blade was likely moved toward the tip to increase strength, following up with complaints of broken blades. They should have added a checkered area there to make it grippy. I think you can buy replacement blades and swap it out. The pliers probably have to be ground shorter so they can fold into the legs without hitting anything in the smaller tool. I agree that it's silly they traded the labor of grinding the pliers shorter with the labor eliminated by leaving out the spring. They should have kept the spring and the pliers the way they were and just made the stamping bigger.

Well Aaron first of all i really love your reviews but i would have to disagree on this one. Yes, there are some flaws on the Rev however keep in mind that the plier head on this multitool is a little bit superior compare to those two. It uses a "scissor" type wire cutters where the Sidekick and Wingman uses a "pinch" type of cutters. This will cut wires more cleanly and probably last a little bit longer. And i think that Leatherman built this multi tool for those types of people who just wants to have their very first multi tool or for those who does not know what a multi tool is so this will be a good starter multi tool for them. And for the market price, i think its still worth it. Just my two cents from your fan here in the Philippines! 😊

I watched your video twice and found that if you tightened up the pocket clip, this would be the tool for you. Your negatives weren't actually Leatherman drawbacks, but rather your personal preferences. After watching I came to the conclusion that you should dump the two other tools and stick with the rev if budget is your actual motive. You are probably more like the rest of us and are really glad to own (or almost own) one of each that comes out. I've only watched up until4 mins 30 seconds; the rev is, in my humble opinion, far superior. The blade is supposed to be released using the fingernail of your opposite hand. The positioning of the slot on the rev increases the leverage and makes that operation much easier. I therefore opine that rather than being a detraction, it's an evolutionary improvement, and the wire cutter is actually also a significant improvement.

Here are the comparable tools' MSRP: Rev = $35, Wingman = $40, Sidekick = $50, Skeletool = $70. I think the Rev is an OK tool for the price point. There are definitely things that could be improved, but it's not that bad considering you could get it for $20 around the holidays. I agree that they should remove an inner tool from the knife handle to make it thinner, like the other side. But the clip on mine is exactly the same as the Wingman & Sidekick, they all wiggle a little. And I prefer pliers without a spring. Personally, I think it's a fine tool, given the price you pay. All that being said, the Wingman is definitely a better value. ETA: Forgot to mention that the placement of the cutout in the knife may be to get around laws forbidding one-hand opening knives. Not sure how many places in the US have restrictions like that, but I believe in Germany you can carry a knife that locks or opens with one hand, but not both. Also, OHO knives are forbidden in Denmark. Leatherman made a special version of the Wave for such places in the past, called the "Wave 2H," which had nail nicks instead of the holes.

I carried the wingman for 8 years. I just switched to the rev. I liked the scissors on the wingman for touching up uniforms. After I got out of the military 5 years ago I haven’t used the scissors hardly at all. The rev is way lighter than the wingman. It’s makes a big difference in your hand. I would find myself switching out the wingman for another knife because of its weight and ever since I’ve had the rev I’ve kept it on my pocket every day. If you want a toolbox multi tool get the one with more tools, but if you want to carry it, I would really recommend getting the rev or at least hold both in your hand. A pair of scissors just isn’t worth the extra weight in my opinion.

I've been impressed with my Rev. Very smooth with no slop. The clip wiggles a bit on all of Leatherman's budget models. Not a big deal as it stays secure in the pocket. The Rev is made in the USA & has MUCH better fit & finish than the two Sidekicks I've had (one I had to return because it was virtually impossible to get some of the tools out as well as having other issues). The Rev also has the upgraded wire cutters the Wingman & Sidekick lack. While it doesn't have the scissors in the Wingman or the saw in the Sidekick, being thinner & lighter with upgraded wire cutters makes the Rev a legit option & a fantastic budget EDC/work multi-tool, IMO.

I was in Lowe's today, and while browsing tools, I came across this Rev, for $11.96. I immediately assumed it was mislabeled, or a bait and switch operation. However, after closer inspection I saw it was true. Grabbed three, and then proceeded to check out the other Leatherman multi tools. The next cheapest I found were the Wingman, and Sidekick at $50 each. That is 4+ times more expensive. No doubt you sacrifice a couple tools choosing the Rev. However, the quality of manufacture of the tool is the same. And for me, it pocket carries almost invisible, being that it is slimmer, and lighter, than any pocket clip tool I have carried. I am very happy with my choice, and think those I share this with as a gift, will much appreciate it's quality, as well. I think it comes down to perspective, and expectation. For me, basic tools is what I am looking for. Not a tool box folded up in my pocket, or hanging from my belt. But rather something light, to use for quick repair jobs. Otherwise, I will make time for a project, and assemble the proper tool set I will need to get the job done. I think this whole multi tool genre, has spun way out of control, and become quite irrational, with some multi tools pushing $200, now. Really? Maybe, its time to step back and take a break from all this madness?
