Not exactly. True to an extent. It was British who felt threatened by punjabi nationalism and active divided communities. Education policy was set to facilitate their agenda as noted by Leitner. Policy was continued by our own vested interests and Punjab was divided, and double whammy of linking language as with religions took its toll. Post partition slivers of Punjab are still being ripped apart. Bigger myth is terming Gurmukhi as punjabi and sikh language, while the punjabi literature is all secular/Sufi/Bhakti. Even the holy Granth sahib is repository of Indian languages in the Gurmukhi script, not all punjabi.

It's a dilemma that saraiki people disowned their saraiki language and new generation is going to adopt Urdu and English. I know we should learn all the languages but our haritage can extinct in this modern decor.😢 Second thing is saraiki is degraded by Urdu,Punjabi people specially people from Karachi and upper Punjab. They demand respect for them but they can't do same for others. Result: All languages are culture of Pakistan and we should preserve Every language specially mother tongue

Urdu was promoted because it was considered the language of Muslims, Punjabis sadly disowned their own mother tongue. I myself am a Muhajir but I hope Punjabis will love and promote Punjabi, its a beautiful language.

In India Punjabi is not spoken by Sikhs only but by Hindus, Muslims, Christians and others also. It is spoken not only in Punjab but in Himachal, Haryana, J&K, Rajsthan, Chandigarh, Delhi and many other states also.

Only Sikhs are true Punjabis. Hindus speak Hindi and Muslims speak Urdu. Both don't have any pride in being Punjabi, when we in fact have the richest history in the subcontinent, right from the Indus Valley Civilization onwards.

To a great extent but not all Panjabi Muslims and Panjabi Hindus have disowned the language. Though it is a historical fact that due to most of Panjabi Hindus betrayal towards their mother tongue Panjab lost Chandigarh and larger portions to Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal. Greater Panjab would have benefitted all the communities whereas now it is serving the purpose of politicians only.

Maybe it's a Pakistan issue? I'm interested to know how the language is perceived there. In India, UK, Canada etc, Sikhs have preserved Punjabi and really made it flourish. The Pakistani dialects of Punjabi are just so gorgeous, please don't let it die! 🙏🏽

Punjabi is precievied to be backward, rustic and foul language here. Mostly, due to the imposition of Urdu and English in Punjab and whole Pakistan. The elite like to speak Urdu and English (mostly an unpleasant mincemeat mix of both). They divided Punjabis based on their accents and dialects. A punjabi from Majha region wont consoder a Punjabi from Potohar region a 'true Punjabi' because of their dialect. South of Punjab has developed their own identity: SERAIKI.

*Personal Experience* : I was in 5th grade in a village part of District Attock (North of Punjab), and the principal legit told us not to speak Punjabi inside school's premises, not even with eachother in break time. Remember, it was a school in *Punjab* with mostly *Punjabi* speaking students. Even most of the Afghan students were fluent either fully fluent or had great understanding of Punjabi language.

It is immaterial whether your mother tongue sounds "cool" or "trendy". It is the duty of parents to speak to their kids in the mother tongue right from young age. That is the only way the kids would adopt and own their own native language, and avoid becoming merely "non-native fluent" speakers of someone else's native language.

I’ve been living in UK for past 12 years and never seen anybody making fun of any culture or language except Pakistanis. I can wear shalwar kameez on any day and go out comfortably for shopping, appointments and sometimes to workplace and everybody will praise my culture and pass compliments. Britishers really appreciate how cultural i am and even ask where they can buy shalwar kameez from. But as soon as i meet desi ppl they give that ugly look when they see me wearing cultural outfits or when i speak with them in punjabi. In fact, majority of our ppl suffer with inferiority complex and always try to copy other cultures without knowing that you can only be respectful if you don’t forget your own place and roots which is your identity. Alhamdulillah my two school going kids are fluent in Urdu, Punjabi and English and I’m proud of them. You can go wherever you want but if you lose your culture (especially your language) you lose your identity.

U said right....in indian punjab......baba bulle shah , baba farid ji.....and many other pakistani punjabi writers are respected and taught to the students.....In class 10th of punjab school education board(pseb) literature of baba bulle shah , sheikh farid ji is there.....even a medical science university is there in city faridkot (city itself on the name of baba farid ji) named Baba Farid University of Health Sciences(bfuhs).....because we respect our language punjabi and prioritize it....we consider baba farid etc. Of our own because they really are our own as they are connected with punjabi lngage..even every punjabi in the world is our own......i wrote this comment in english to reach this to other people also....otherwise i have written it in punjabi

Please don't be a fanatic like hindi fanatics in north India. In 60's the Hindi Hindu Hindustan bigots wanted to impose Hindi all over India. The result was that south Indians protested and publically beat idols of our Hindu gods Ram & Krishna with chappals in processions. I suggest you first speak punjabi in your homes, esp with your children. All punjabis, Hindus muslims Sikhs have disowned Mother's Milk. Sikhs had adopted punjabi because of religious & political reasons. Let us promote punjabi in all scripts - gurmukhi, devnagari, Persian or Roman. Even in many urban sikh homes, youngsters speak in Hindi or English, and very little punjabi.

I'm a punjabi living in Sindh and I was disheartened when a punjabi girl from Islamabad preferred to converse with me in Urdu despite my attempts to speak in punjabi. She said that she found urdu to be a more decent language, which shook my confidence in speaking Punjabi.

Dr. Ambedkar in his book 'Thoughts on Pakistan' (freely available on Net) published in early 1940s advocates that Punjabis are dominant position in all fields be economy, trade, defence etc. He writes, so a separate Pakistan is good for rest of India. This will cut Punjabi power in half.

Also read 'Sachi Sakhi' book by Sardar Kapoor Singh. Sardar Kapoor Singh was first Sikh ICS / IAS officer to be dismissed for so called breaking India. Very important book on Indian indipdendence and Sikh matters.

I am a native Urdu speaker. my second language is English and my third language is Punjabi. Most of the time, since I am not Punjabi and I don't have that crystal clear accent, most of the punjabis ostracize those people and make weird faces on them. Which is why i sometimes ask myself that why did i learned this language? On the other hand, if i say the basics of Pashto, even with not proper accent, will appreciate that i am learning his mother tongue. Most of the Punjabis aren't open minded these days.

unfortunately if you speak Punjabi in Pakistan they literally call you paindo, jahil.Pakistan me bht bura haal ha punjabi language ka log bolte tu han but unko log accept ni krte like me even though i'm a university graduate agr ma punjabi bolon log khte itna prh likh k kia jahilon wali zuban bol rhi ho. hmen schools me daant prti thi agr hm glti se pinjabi bolte the complains hti ha teachers ki k apki bachi punjabi me bt krti ha. ar is wajah se mje sharam ati thi punjabi bole hwe bht embarras feel hta tha but thanks to my parents unhon ne is chez ko smja ar mje smjaya k koi b language buri ni hti hmari soch choti ha. 2:07 own hora nahi bhaisaab, india mein 76 saalo hai saare lang owned hi hai. Humne kisi lang ko secondary nahi samjha, each state gives their own language first preference, be it schools, public sign boards, shop names or govt offices, even light bills and govt documents are written in state language making it harder for immigrants from other states to adapt in a new state. locals will sometimes give you secondary treatment if you dont know their language.

Not true for every state. In Himachal and Uttrakhand, hindi has overtaken pahari dialect. Same can be said for West Bengal where Bengali language used to dominate but hindi is slowly overtaking bengali. But most states have done tremendous job still.

Urdu/Hindi were names assigned by Gilchrist to the Khariboli dialect of Braj language, which was spoken by upper caste Hindus in that region. “Urdu” has nothing to do with Pakistani identity. Panjabi is Pakistan’s natural language.

This was a top down policy construct I believe. Gen xer here. Our parents who are boomers stopped speaking punjabi to us en masse because the rulers in pakistan were urdu speaking and there was a low stature placed on punjabi accent and language at jobs offices and radio and TV. There was a clean urdu accent only on broadcasting channels and it had the value that from the Benazir times/ 90s started being given to English. All provinces except Punjab taught their provincial language at schools in the 80s. Oppressing the largest remaining ethnic group (after the loss of East Pakistan) that also contributes the largest manpower to forces was a policy imho 😅 only those who were close to their grandparents from my generation could speak punjabi.

Our parents refused to speak in any other language too us but punjabi. We could Learn and speak any other language outside. Don’t kill your cultures. Rootless feel deprived of sense of belonging. Even in western countries heritage languages are encouraged.
