Why We Jump

I wanted to take a new perspective with skydiving, and ask the simple question "Why Do You Jump".
From jumpers who have made a career from the skydive industry, to some of the best skydivers in the world. Why they jump and how it feels are given a unique insight. Coupled together with some of my favorite skydive shots from the last year, i hope to bridge the gap between the jumper and the non-jumper.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed time, footage and made the jumps happen.

I remember when I first watched this video terrified to jump. 4 years later I have 150 jumps and 2 years in the sport. Best decision I’ve ever made.

You know, they say: "To the ones who haven't jumped you just cannot explain. To the ones that have, you don't need to..." This is more true than anything in the world! But in this short film they do a marvelous job explaining! Can't imagine it being done better. Blue skies 🤙🏻

I can’t believe this came across my feed again after all these years! 7/8 years ago I watched this amongst many other BASE and skydiving videos but this is one of the main ones ingrained into my memory and I had 0 jumps to my name at the time, yet here I am 8 years later with 1500+ skydives and a ton of magical insane memories from a wild, wild, wild AF journey. Thank you so much for inspiring me to take a leap of faith into the best life I could have ever experienced! Thank you! You fu*kin’ legends!

3 years in the sport, but I took my time getting my A license (USPA). I got it this June. I just bought my first rig and AAD this week. Wonderful sport and a wonderful community. Religion, politics and other things are never brought up. We get together to not only jump, but restaurant visits, vacations, tunnel time and DZ parties. Bonfire every weekend at Cleveland Skydiving Center.

You got the best life bro. A good DZ is honestly the best way of life. Glad you found a home within a family.

I've done two tandem jumps, both were different experiences and I want to do AFF. I'm barred from doing AFF in the UK because I'm 64 and the maximum age is 55. In the US, Germany & Australia, it's the drop zone and instructor who decides. I'm organising a trip to Australia to do my AFF and possibly more jumps to gain my licence. I think doing tandem, a person misses the "at the door" moment, when YOU have to make the decision to jump. That is what I'm going to Australia to discover... and the sunshine and blue skies!

Your second part of your paragraph couldn’t be more true, I also want to make the decision to jump and have that feeling at the door. When I get enough money I will definitely be standing at the door feeling more alive than ever before and I can’t wait for it

@@mrtomwilddd Wishing you all the best Thomas! I had hoped to do the eight AFF and additional jumps to become qualified in Aussie but I've been advised against it by DZs who tell me I'm too old for my body to take the stresses and strains. I see their point, so I've found a DZ in Germany that will accept me, provided I get a doctors note to say I'm okay. So I'm weight training to build muscle and bone mass and doing yoga to improve flexibility. I've changed my diet to reduce my weight so that when I hit the ground, either on my feet, my knees or my face, my body is better able to withstand the impact. But first, I have to convince my MD.

Come to Dubai and join the old boys at SkyDive DXB, the only numbers we are interested in is Wing Loading, wind speed and where we are on the manifest. Nothing else matters.

The UK really is pathetic. Even if they "permit" you to do AFF they never really let you go. I learned in the UK. Thereafter for the next 11 years I jumped in France and the US where it is another sport. In France if the weather is right they will teach you in a weekend, and REALLY teach you. Go there. It will save you money too. Both instructors wear a camera and you dont get ripped off paying for a video flyer. Happy jumping.

The weirdest moments I've had is being last out of the plane. I used to freestyle on my own. You look around and have a moment to reflect on what your about to do. Your lips get dry, you look out the door for a bit, and your amazed with yourself that there is no hesitation to jumping out into the void. You lie on your back and watch the plane disappear at a rapid rate, you see the sunset, and you are at total peace, you can't think of anything else. Then you think. Shit this is the most expensive minute and you start freestyling. Then I dump high at around 5000 and float around admiring the scenery. And then you get a little jump of fear as you look up at that flimsy bit of material and washing line holding you up there. You then start to be more worried about the long walk back to the hanger as the wind is making you fly backwards. It's been a while since I jumped, but I'm getting the bug again. Marriage and kids have held me back. Good flying to everyone.

After my second tandem My instructor went into your pulling etc this is me facing my fears my mistakes, my second time up I wasn't in fear I was nervous yes , I just knew it was the rest of my life. I was living I lived for the very first time I was free, I found myself for who I am what I will become even on the ground it rushes through me I'm ready for my AFF course I'm ready for my next challenge in life even outside, I'm ready to be a better person, not everyone understands but I feel accomplished I feel skydiving introduced me to my mom again and I can do it, I can do whatever life puts in front of me and skydiving just free's me from the stress the thought I can't keep going it's time to jump and it's immediate I get over it stress goes away failure gone I'm just living ....blue skies ..jump ...live ...become free... I feel everyone should at least once it's worth it.. and I'm putting in the work so I can the best I've ever been again... For God for my family I will jump again.

There are two kinds of crazy people, anyone that crawls around on their hands and knees looking for black mamba to play with, and anyone who climbs onto an 1800 pound bull and tries to stay on for an 8 second ride. USPA D7466.

I can think of a 100 other things that would give me peace and happiness and don’t risk an almost certain death should anything go wrong.

Have you tried skydiving yourself? Because if you didn't, you should not compare it to "100 other things". If you did and still find something comparable on the ground, then... good for you, I guess (share plz, I may try to cure myself, haha).

Interesting comment. I bet you’ve gotten into a car at least once in your life and never had the same opinion. Even though the chance of death is higher statistically? Same as a train or a plane but somehow you think this is more dangerous and haven’t even looked at the evidence that pretty much everyday you take far bigger risks of dying but think it’s normal and ‘safe’ living?
