Hola Mija! I am an immigrant from Ireland. Living in Baja for the past 10 years, on a path to citizenship (The exam questions are so hard!!!-What does papalote mean in Nahuatl?...!!!!!), anyway, my Yaqui wife bought land years ago and I built a house: 4k for the land, 40k for the house construction. With no mortgage, monthly expenses are very cheap-utilities:

When people say they can live on less traveling than staying at home, I think they are almost always speaking about going to a less expensive country. The Colombian peso has fallen while the Mexican peso has risen against the USD, so you are probably seeing larger price differences between Mexico and Colombia than ever before.
A stronger Mexican Peso would mean as a Mexican that in general you can buy more in Colombia, still, non the less, don't exp[ect everything top be cheaper in Colombia than in Mexico, Colombia has stupidly high tariffs that make electronics and some other things way more expensive than they should be, the same can be said for Brazil and Argentina too.
Greed is the reason prices are going up, and people are laid off. I am 80, and I moved to Queretaro at 79 in 2021. The dollar is falling, but God will take care. I do get a pension, and I left the USA, because it is deadly and super expensive. Rent, Food etc. is going up, but less than the USA. I do help many none beggars. At 80, I have always invested into good people. God bless everyone.
This is a comment from William: Hola Ruby. There is no one right answer for everyone. Some people are uncomfortable moving about the world and may be intimidated by anything different or foreign. They may even be fearful of the "other" and need the familiar to be comfortable, and owning a house is equated with security. Other people have an innate curiosity about the world and are rewarded by embracing the foreign and different cultures over the horizon. Such people value experiences and memories more than financial security, although they don't have to be mutually exclusive. My choice was to travel extensively in Mexico and the southwest portion of the US until I was about 40. I didn't work to buy a house. I worked to travel while I was young enough to explore Mexico cheaply and not feel inconvenienced by basic accommodations. 70 pesos a week for a hotel room in San Cristobal de Las Casas? More than adequate for my purposes, and the money saved was available to buy huipils, bags and belts from the Indian women weavers. The hotel rooms or B&B apartments the RU-vidrs of today show are palaces compared what I was happy with as a young traveler. Perhaps coming of age during the hippy era helped. I've traveled more than 100,000 kms in Mexico, visited all of the states in Mexico except Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas, visited places rarely if ever seen by tourists, been the guest of wealthy land owners, campesinos and indios in remote mountain settlements, taken thousands of photos and recorded my travels in diaries, and I wouldn't trade my experiences and memories for a handful of houses. I still don't own a house but with a little luck I should outlive my savings. I can no longer travel but I have 30 feet of books on Mexico and the internet is loaded with interesting videos on Mexico. I'm more than happy to share my knowledge and love of Mexico, and the Mexico I knew 40-55 years ago is the subject of history books. That Mexico has mostly disappeared. But not in my mind. Travel while you can. You are smart enough and hard working enough to deal with the future, whenever that comes. There are cheaper places than Queretaro in Mexico, still very nice, and they will be available at a price the average Mexican can afford as long as the expats don't discover them before you do. Plus, you know how to work remotely, so location is less critical than when I was your age. Great video. Have lots of fun in Colombia.
Hi William! Woow 70 pesos a week for a hotel room sounds very affordable. I'm sure you have very interesting stories to tell about your trips in Mexico. Dave and I were talking about our next trips in the future. We consider we travel very slow and we like this way but we'll be travelling around Mexico for sure. Colombia feels nice!
What an amazing and well-lived life path you are on! I've even saved your post It's so beautiful and inspiring. I grew up with wanderlust, have traveled extensively throughout all of America and down the Baja peninsula. I feel peace in places that are media has brainwashed us are dangerous. Of course they want all of the American dollars here in the right? Our money is not ours to hoard and trust me it goes so much farther everywhere else then clenched tightly in our own fist, or stored in bank accounts that can be seized by governments everywhere. Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about. Just don't forget to live thank you for sharing your beautiful expression it's life!
IMHO, you guys chose the wrong city to begin with, although Querétaro is a very nice city but it’s going to get more expensive each year. I chose to move to Morelia in December 2020 over Querétaro or San Miguel de Allende, even I could afford it. There are many other places are still undiscovered, and I could notice that Morelia has started to have more expats since I arrived a bit over 2 years ago. I’m glad that I bought a house in Morelia and I feel stable with my life here! No worry about the rental expenses which it has started to rise from one year to the next. My recommendation is to purchase the best house you could afford and travel frequently to other places as you wish. Best of luck! Colombia would not be my first choice!
Yes. There's another channel I follow and that guy lives quite cheaply in Merida. Buying a house if it can be done is the way to go. Property taxes are very low in Mexico.
I’ve been watching your channel as I’m a retired Mexican/American. More American, as I’ve lived most of my life in the US. I just returned from 2-weeks in Mexico, a week at the beach in Cancun and a week in Queretaro. Your perspective is very interesting, as your story reflects the life in this post industrial world economy. My working life from 1970 through 2013 was in the tail end of the Industrial Revolution. I learned a trade (no collage), however both my wife & I managed to ride the wave of rising housing values, we also saved approximately 5-10% of our income each year (invested on stocks via the 401k plans here in the US). Today, as senior citizens we see the possibility of becoming political or financial refugees, as we consider a future move to Mexico. Don’t give up on RU-vid. BTW, I spent time in Columbia in the 90’s, nice country, but dangerous when I was there. ❤
That's right. People going to different areas. Trying to escape their problems only seem to add two more problems. And it is crazy it's not always better. It's sometimes just more of the same.
No one ever regrets their time traveling, and it's super smart to navigate around the currency fluctuations and take advantage of your ability to work anywhere.
The stock market is about to crash so beware! I have to say that I am happy that I am an old woman. I don't know if I would know how to start all over again in today's world. I have no savings but I have learned how to conserve everything while I was a nomad traveling as a solo woman and that education has given me such an interesting life. My advice is to trust yourselves and be flexible. Create the life that works for YOU!!!... and of course, do no harm!
" Stock market is about to crash " You must be a expert to make a claim like that ,would you like to elaborate on that ? So what is going to cause this crash .. ?.
Love to hear your perspective! But honestly, Mexico is one of the best countries in the world to be in at the moment... it's still very affortable, lots of opportunities, and freedom! You seems creative so I am sure you will make it through!
@@shaunmckenzie5509 I live in Mexico and the locals are not starving.... Most people seem to have more buying power than myself..they have nicer phones, laptops. cars, bikes, eat at more expensive restaurants, take more taxis..and these are all locals.

@@Pimp-Master enjoy your "little paradise" Chiapis is like the garden of Eden..it's amazing. And as Carlton Penaloza says...the "grifters" aren't interested in places that are not filled with other "grifters"
Came across your video and thought I'd just tell my little story....I took up photography about a year ago (this is after 4 eye surgeries and bad vision for nearly 20 years). People started noticing my work so I decided to pursue it. I had been set on traveling, in my car for at least a time and trying to do what is called "car life." Not because I had too but because I want to change my situation. I am a gig worker in the US and since we have corrupt politicians destroying our way of life up here, the gig economy has become way less lucrative. I don't know if the economy is going to totally collapse or not, all I know is, I want to live my best life before it does if it does. I started making traveling videos on my channel. Right now I only have 76 subs but I love it so I'm going to continue investing in myself. I took a chance and a trip to southern california from phoenix last month and had a really great time, took wonderful photos and will developing my videos soon for that trip....HOWEVER...on the way back, my car's transmission went out so now I've been stuck at home, hoping to find a stay at home job...found one, but it's only commission but it is in the travel industry, hopefully it works out decently....so what you say about making plans but can't control what happens is absolutely true. I'm hoping to do van life next...that's my plan. (p.s...I subbed your channel, I'm interested in learning more about Mexico) :)
I think it's great that you and Dave have chosen to travel. You are both still young and are working online, that makes it so much easier. Don't rush the time when you will settle down, you will know when that time is coming. Traveling is an education in itself and I believe it makes a person more open to what the world has to offer. I love all of your videos and am enjoying being a student in your Thrive in Spanish Async class, I would recommend it to anyone. It will help me so much once I move to Mexico and will make it easier to communicate with people in many parts of the world. I will be more likely to travel to other Spanish speaking countries. Good luck and I hope you enjoy Columbia, seeing your videos makes me want to visit there! ☮️❤️😎
Hola Pam! 👋🏽 Cómo estás? Thanks you very much for your nice words. We probably felt s little bit of pressure the first time we wanted to buy a house. Things happend for a reason! We want this for now and we appreciate to see you and more people are enjoying this new stage of life with us. I will make sure you enjoy my content in the future as well as my Spanish courses. It's a pleasure to speak with you virtually too in Spanish!
This is super dope. Glad for you all. My family and I recently made a similar move into full time travel full time. Currently in Mexico, and will be visiting Colombia as well. The plan is to visit every country thay will allow us, with the minimal amount of effort. Good luck, but I know yall will be fine. Peace
Big likes lovely and blessings to you! I lost my job in 2021 and was able to accept it❣️✨ The world is definitely a different place, so many things will always be uncontrollable.
Hey, I listened to your video and gave it a like. Traveling is something that they can never take away from you. I traveled a lot when I was younger. The future is more uncertain than ever before. You make a good point that there are unforeseeable circumstances out of your control that you have to deal with. Identify a problem is different than finding the right answer. But good luck and keep up the good work.
It's nice to see you excited about your new country. You and Dave really enjoyed it last year so it makes sense to live there for a while. I'm looking forward to new videos from Columbia and hoping that good things come your way.
This is wonderful ! Take your adventures as they come, think broadly and apply yourselves just as you are. Respect the laws of the land wherever you are and pay your taxes. Be of service as you go so your passing through leaves only footprints and takes only memories. I look forward to your videos. Many blessings from Australia.
Hola hermana. Property is always the best long term investment that you can make. It doesn’t need to be developed property, open range or woodlands is great too. Real estate property values are declining in the USA. Purchase undeveloped property in the states of Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah. Purchase more than 20 acres. In rural areas, less than 20 acres means that you fall under a different set of government regulations. I recommend buying 1,000+ acres of rangeland bordered by BLM land. Sit on it as a long term investment. The value will only increase.
After watching your vid and having all the facts, hagale, it sounds like you have made a good call. Most folk cannot afford to do both, travel and buy a home unless the rents are really good and cover the mortgage. Travel is good for the soul and makes a worldly persona in most cases. I do know some that have travelled but did not see. I know a few people that work remotely as digital nomads and its great.
I have been thinking to no buy a place when I retire in Mexico but move around other countries on a permanent Vacation and when I get bored maybe work part time. But you guys need to still work… but we need to be adaptable ❤
Traveling when young is great. Just one thing to think about - the older you get, the harder could be to buy a house. You mentioned inflation right now. Imagine inflation 10 to 20 years from now when you decide to buy a house. Just some food for thought. Best of luck in your travels.
You’re right. My daughter is a 40 year old self employed artist in the UK. Property is so expensive there now. My advice would be to buy a small place in Mexico and rent it until you’re ready to settle down.
Agreed have been traveling to Mexico for years always knowing we would buy there one day… wish we had done it when we were younger. Again as stated by someone else food for thought! Time flies ❤
Karen, as others have mentioned, I'm not a fan of the click baity titles and thumbnails in the last weeks, either. Your content and ideas are so much better than that. I think many people are interested in other types of content - culture, travel, not every video about why you left Mexico or Mexico vs. Colombia. You sound like you are justifying your actions a lot. There is no need to! I'd love more in depth videos about Colombia - more show, less tell. I think a lot of other viewers would, too.
Colombia has an awesome culture. Check out the Vallenato music festival in Valedupar this spring. Vallenato is one of the most popular music types in Colombia. Distfruta!
Thanks for sharing with us Karen! Investing vs home ownership. There are wonderful pros and cons to both. Investing feels a lot easier because I haven’t enjoyed home ownership. It depends on one’s tolerance for either. I’m praying that things settle down as I plan to move to Mexico.
It's so good you both diversified your work skills to make sure you can adapt as needed financially to changing times and also to keep growing, just like moving to new places to keep growing and having adventures. I've had very unexpected new challenges too, and things are much harder financially. I do what I can to keep up with these new expenses (health). One lesson, always live below your means, because anything can happen. Have a big emergency fund. You do grest videos, and I've always wanted to keaen Spanish, and I'll definitely choose your course if I finally do it. Good luck in your travels!
Karencita if you explore the option of going to India and doing the digital nomad thing there with your husband for 6 months and go to some cool places, you MIGHT grow a lot there because Indians love their country so much. They will follow you as long as you make videos there that are good. You might be able to make a decent living off RU-vid if you do the India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, The Philippines and Vietnam circuit. I have been doing the research by following what palces and how many views RU-vidrs like Harry Jaggard, Davud Akhundzada, World Nomac, Banjamin Jenks, Paddy Doyle, Nicole And Mico, Those Happy Years, Rhett And Claire, etc get and it's A LOT! The key is to stay in those areas and just travel around them. When these people have left back to Europe or the Middle East or South America, views drop drastically. When they go back to India, etc, the views shoot back up. Just something to think about for you and your husband. I'm currerntly living in Envigado next to Medellin. If you ever wanna, we can do a Live Stream interview. If not, no se preocupe. Keep Chasing Your Dreams. Never Give Up. Travel the world as long as you guys wanna. There's so much out there to see and so many cool people to meet.
You are soooo beautiful without makeup!! What a beauty you are inside and out 🫶 Keep expanding yourself. Share your gifts sis and you are worthy ❣️You're amazing 🥰
Hi Mija. This tip is just for you. Start watching energy stocks and how thier patterns move with the seasons, hot, cold weather, a storm, or even loud mouth politicians. You can always rest assure when these dip or crash “ it’s time to buy that dip” Energy stocks always go back up
Hi this is Teacher John from Teacher John's Adventures..one of your best videos...I hope you enjoy your new adventures....I am hoping to move to San Carlos Mexico soon....and travel now to Columbia...enjoy..
My rent in MX just went up 10% this month bc of the mx peso, not to mention all the items and services that went up not due to the exchange rates. It's probably time for many nomads to pack up and go elsewhere. I assume you are not talking about 401k or SIEFORE, my stock/crypto portfolio is like 5% of my net, it's like money to play at the casino. it's proven that real estates almost always go up over time, and it's one of the most common ways to transfer wealth from one generation to the next. You don't have to settle down in one place to buy a house. The rentals I collect give me the flexibility to live anywhere and is funding my future retirement
I think stocks are risky. But with risk comes potentially big rewards! Your assessment is very good. I admire you for working RU-vid and making very good videos!
Hola Karencita. The main problem in todays world is that prices increase everywhere but not income. I am from Quebec but I can't afford to live there anymore. I love Latin America but South-East-Asia is less expensive for a good quality of life. You remember your stay in Vietnam? I can live well in Thailand for less than half the price in Quebec. Food is great, people are nice, it is secure and Internet is great. I can even travel to neighbour countries. The only problems are linguage and visas. I am now exploring the Philippines.
My wife and I love your Channel and we wish you the very best we saw you four different times when we were in Uber's and would yell and wave at you if you ever need a place to stay where an older couple that you would be glad to come and stay with us for a few nights in Queretero. God Bless you both.
I own both stocks and rental properties. Both are generally good investments but different. Stocks of good companies held over a long time can generate great returns but come with a lot of market volatility vs. rental properties do not generate as much potential value increase but they can give you steady monthly rent income
Very good video. 1st time watcher. Like this fresh perspective on being "Digital Nomads" . Glad you decided not to buy the house and to embrace your passion for traveling. Best of luck to you and much love from Canada. 🇨🇦
Sounds like you have thought everything through very well. Housing might be a big expense when you travel. If you are frugal and don't party too much, I would think you could live "on the road" just as cheaply or for less than in Querétaro.
Prices are rising all over the world,if you move to a cheaper country,in a couple of years you'll find yourself in th3 same predicament you're in now, van a estar como un perro persiguiendo su cola.thats just the way it is,,I remember some twenty years ago Costa Rica was the place to move to if you were looking for a cheap place to live, today is the most expensive country in Latin America.
My house is slowly losing value and at the same time, I am diversified in dividend stocks that are continuously bringing in monthly yields that total over 10% annually. If you can live on the money you are earning from your jobs, you will see a nice return on your stocks if you can get into stocks that pay dividends. I think you are making the right choices.
Hi. Maybe learning skills that are really practical, like sowing and more of that. Learn survival skills and all kinds of wild edible plants, mushrooms and other stuff. Things are really gonna get bumpy and stoks and internet related stuff wont mean as much as they do now. Owning a house and some land is always a good thing, but when even those get taken away its great knowing survival skills. I hope things wont get as bad as I am imagining but its always good to prepare for the worst. Try spending more time with your loved ones...time goes so quickly and those moments spent with them are so precious. All the best wishes to everyone.
Well you arent the only content creators to be either quiting or up and nomading around. So many are doing it now like almost at the same time, wow. Its a brave move and i wish you well. As far as stocks go, I personally wouldnt touch it right now. If i did it would probably be in energy or war supplies ! 7 days in a row on the downward, no funds injected by the fed. Safer bet would be gold and silver, real money. Assets. Keep us updated on your progress, best wishes, travel safe and do it while you have your health (thats what i did). cheers !
Retiring tomorrow !!! We are 55 and 60, stressed, and ready to get off of the US hamster wheel. My wife is originally from Nicaragua. We plan, like you, to slow travel between Mexico and Argentina, but we are starting in Nicaragua. We think our monthly costs will be 25-33% of our US costs. We also think there are about a dozen cities we’ll love in Latin America that will be 50% of our US costs or lower. It’s hard NOT to leave and travel. In 16 months when social security starts, that will MORE than cover all our bills. We’ll be putting money into savings every month. That also means our retirement account can continue to grow for many years. As an insurance policy I started teaching English online just a couple hours a week, so if I am bored or want extra money for travel, etc., it’s easy and can be done anywhere. Oh, and Manizales is a city on our list of possible retirement cities.
I agree digital nomads can be free to travel but still mexico should not become costly to locals :( Just my thoughts . Mucho amo de india otra vez .
Hola!! Dont feel bad. It's not completely like that. We'll be back in Mexico at some point of course (a lot of my family is living there). We are just enjoying this opportunity
I've just subscribed as your video's are very interesting n I hope one day to travel round South America, n find a beautiful senorita like yourself I love listening to people speaking Spanish it's a very beautiful language, also I think metals are something to maybe looking into for investment as there will always be a market for them, especially precious metals if you have the money too!🤔, have a lovely evening!😊💜✌️
I’ve subscribed and yes, get as many income steams as possible, very unstable world nowadays and you have to be adaptable as you say. And as as someone from the U.K. I can understand what your mother in law is saying about the U.K.; I moved from there back in 2008 but can’t imagine how expensive it has become, keep those videos coming your information is great and admirable.
Both are great investments with more challenges to owning a house! You can own property on the stock market but owning REITS! I LOVE the stock market, so I’m biased!
Your still young it may not always feel like it you must do what is right for you and your what your ❤️ tells you. There will always be time to settle down latter, enjoy yourself while your healthy.......
100% it is possible to travel and be financially responsible, we have been doing it for 12 years and counting. For example our first full month here in Ecuador our food costs were ~$300 USD. In Canada our average monthly cost for food is $1000 USD. We will save ~$4200 USD in food costs alone in the 6 months we will stay in Ecuador. That will cover our airfare with significant real dollar savings on top. We even saved significant money travelling to/living in the expensive location of Aruba recently. We will say that financial frugality while travelling is more feasible with a slow travel approach because more moves equals more costs, especially when changing countries. Thank you for the video, we hope you enjoy your travels!👍🙄
🤔 I feel like best decision not to buy any IMmobile stuff but staying MOBILE 😉 especially in these times of uncertainty. What’s inside of you, your experiences, lessons learned will add up during time staying with you wherever you go and can’t be stolen 😂 Following my own experiences: when in doubt it’s a “NO” because whenever the best offer is right in front of you there are no doubts anymore but you know “this is it” and go for it without any hesitation. Recommendation: not looking back and overthinking what you have done! For the time being it is what it is and that’s it. Now enjoy and look ahead 😉 Good luck 🍀
I bought and sold several homes in the USA. In retrospect I would have been better off renting. There are calculators that can help you with this. Aldi.... I think in México... You can get 8% interest per year on your savings? Yes? Do that. Freedom is priceless. A purchased house and a mortgage is an anchor.
It's actually around 11% that you get with CETES at the moment. Nobody knows exactly what's going to happen to house prices but I agree that definitely in some cases renting is better. If you look through the comments, you'll find plenty of people who disagree though.
Buying a house is not for everyone. In the first place what kind of lifestyle do you want? And, more importantly, if your house doesn't create income for you, say a house with 3 or 4 apartments to rent, it becomes a money drain. So you become a landlord. And yes, you are responsible for repairs, etc. It cuts down considerably on your FREEDOM. In other words, you do not own the house. It owns you. If you are ready to put down roots, maybe have kids, that's fine. But it's not everyone's choice. I do believe you can be financially stable and travel. You can be financially stable and not travel. To work towards $ stability you have to spend less than you make and you have to have a system of savings that doesn't include the stock market. Anything you put in the market should be after you stick 13% of your monthly income in a high yield savings account. You should have 8 months of household and living expenses in a savings account against which you draw any necessities on the occasion. Then you should continue to amass savings in a separate, high yield account that you basically don't touch. One that has no maintenance or other fees and no cap on the amount of money you can save and get the high interest. Don't do money market accounts for this. They are investments. You can lose money. Remember, this is your foundational wealth that you are building. The stronger you make your foundation, the more secure you will be and the more you can weather the storms that surely will come. Higher interest rates can be a hedge against inflation. You can pull in your belt and spend less. I am not against stock purchases, but one has to be very careful and have a lot of knowledge and experience not to get caught in the manipulative practices of the big institutional investors. A further hedge would be to buy physical silver and gold bullion and coins. Not as an investment. Don't look to see up or down here. Just know that whatever happens their value will never be zero. This you can buy little by little and create a safety net. Anything can happen at any time. You are wise to see this. We can only try to do the best we can. The best support you will ever have is the love of each other and your friends and family. Cultivating your true relationships and getting rid of those people who are not of good character will do much to spare you of wasting your energy. Your energy is the true currency. Be careful how you spend it. Best of luck to you both.
My personal "hard earned" advice: Now is simply NOT the time to quote "invest..." it's rather the TIME to "store wealth" in PHYSICAL (not paper, or digital) commodities (gold and silver, for e.g.) to "preserve wealth." You CAN also alternatively "control real estate" with contractual agreements, WITHOUT "buying" the property. (This is what I now do...) in any places in the West... and also, abroad. Rather than just "renting," one can ALSO secure a lease... and draft a second agreement (very similar to a "stock option) to secure "an option to purchase" up until a set ending date, at an agreed price (i.e. with no obligation, to buy) for a few thousand extra. Then if the home price, increases (and the economy improves...) you may wish to purchase, the home in say: 2- 5 hears? Or conversely, if things do NOT "improve" (i.e. to warrant buying the property...) then your "saving grace," IS that you do NOT have to... complete the purchase!
Furthermore, you should NEVER BUY at, or near the "top of the market cycle." (Be it stocks, bonds, real estate, etc. in their "rigged Casino/s.") So you buy "physical metals," etc. to BEAT "inflation..." (again, as a "store of wealth...") and then LATER cash-out of PMs (precious metals) and buy... then (most importantly!) RESELL before the END of the next 8- 12 year cycle, like clockwork. (This took me 3- 4 "investment" cycles and thousands of hours of interrelated studies to fully GRASP, by my late 40s...) Now is the time to either "rent," or "lease w/ an option... to purchase?" Or perhaps alternately, put less than say 20% down, and get "seller financing," vs. a new (i.e. 1.5- 2x higher interest) banknote, until AFTER... the current (already, now here) "correction..." because this one may well last 5- 10 years? And BUY circulated coin silver, and gold... if you have the means? (i.e. Just in case you ultimately need it, to "trade" with... to buy necessities!?) As they say: "Cash, is Trash!" (i.e. Ultimately ONLY backed by "public confidence..." and EASILY "inflated," or worse. THIS... is the main problem! FORGET the M$ Media, B.S.)
I think the economy of México is picking up in the future, but I have no idea about the local real estate market. Stock investment is a pretty hard job if you have no experience. Better invest in ETF or mutual fund.
