In the 30 years since the classic NES controller debuted, controller design has come a long way. Or has it? Controller designs aren’t only about ergonomics. They’re also sites of clashing philosophies, corporate rivalries, and the battle for the loyalties of elite players.

Furthermore they probably never read and understood the paper they reference at 0:40. Because it's TOILET PAPER. I could elaborate, but it's evident that there are purely ergonomic considerations that the author of the paper doesn't understand but actual controller developers do. Wrong finger, wrong force reference, wrong design goals, and the paper concludes with presenting a "perfect" by-the-book controller that will break your thumb ligaments.

Lul, the gamecube controller actually borders on being a bad controller. Its the beginning of the good design the xbone-controller would eventually have, but doesnt really hide the fact that the face buttons are a disaster, the stick feels uncomfortable, never mind the c-stick being a trainwreck and the general feel of holding a gamecube controller is not ideal. Lets face it: people who defend the gamecube controller are people who play smash. And somebody who trained smash since childhood probably will never change the controller, of fear of drifting away from the level they reached by training with it. But its telling that nintendos REAL controller, the pro controller, is pretty much an xbone controller. It may not be the perfect controller and god knows how much the battery industry paid microsoft to leave out battery packs, but in terms of design the best controller right now is theirs.

Starcraft players have more than that and thats why theres is such an issue with carpal tunnel and similar issues, more inputs, not faulty ergonmics. also these things are usually caused by poor hand health practices (no stretching, hours without breaks, unhealthy hand positions, pressing buttons needlessly hard or with needless effort)

Soooo.... why won’t we have a perfect controller? This was just a documentary of ergonomics in controllers
@cmck362
@cmck362 5 лет назад
I believe they were hinting at the fact that controllers won't be completely ergonomic due to a few factors like preconceived notions of what a controller should look like, brand recognition, optimized performance, durability, and bulky internal parts. Basically you can't have it all and you have to prioritize what is important. For example the video says something like buttons should be further apart so they're more ergonomic, but they also bring up the fact that close buttons allow users to hit buttons faster. Ergonomics vs user performance. They had to choose one.
@hamizannaruto
@hamizannaruto 5 лет назад
Its a False title, but to answer your question, most likely because its literally impossible. There is not way to make a game controller that is perfect for every gamers while also being ergonomic. Someone like me dont find the offset analog to be comfortable, while others love it to death. (And thats why i have not departure from playstation). There is also some game that just not great for has a better controller layout, tho the only thing i can think of is smash bros, as gamecube controller are better for it. Not only that, the way you hold the controller can cause some issue too. Putting you hand close together, Extending your thumb to reach the analogue. Those can contribute to other things as well. Tweaks will be make, but making it perfect is not possible. Meanwhile, nintendo keep running away from being the most ergonomic controller ever made. Each controller they make are just getting worse for ergonomic, but im not complaining. They are the most creative one out there and i sure hell love their games.
@hamizannaruto
@hamizannaruto 5 лет назад
@Vox3l-Gl1tch Yeah, that could work. I wonder if anyone gonna go into this route. and if someone does go, how well will it go, or it will fail like modular cellphone
@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 4 года назад
Remember also, that aside from the fact that people just have different preferences, they may also have a tendency to play different kinds of games which work better with different controller features. And, even factoring all of that in? People's hands are different sizes. What feels comfortable to someone with really large hands is going to be drastically different to what feels comfortable to someone with small hands. Your mass produced game controller has to somehow be fairly comfortable for nearly everyone. But 'sort of comfortable for everyone' is by definition 'probably not perfectly comfortable for anyone' Maybe this is why Xbox brought back the duke for a bit... It genuinely is a better controller for some people... But not for everyone...
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 4 года назад
@@hamizannaruto It would be several orders of magnitude less complex and more cost effective than a modular cell phone. In fact it doesn't have to succeed on the same scale as the cost of entry into the market is much lower, it could be a viable niche, just like modified controllers are. Literally someone could start selling electronics kits with boards and connectors, and offer a selection of shell parts to 3D print yourself. Even with mass produced plastic kit parts, the cost of starting up such a business could be in tens of thousands. Modular phone has to cost about 50 million or so. One problem is vendor lock-in/lock-out. There are deliberate compatibility barriers in consoles to prevent you from making a third party controller, which manufacturers of counterfeits don't necessarily struggle with, but legitimate businesses trying to engineer something custom do. Controllers on PC are more of a niche, but are a sensible target. But failure is always an option!

I have regularly used Atari, SNES, N64, DreamCast, XBOX, GameCube, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Xbox 360 was by far my favorite. The shape, the size, the weight, the durability, the feel, the layout, the ease of use were all there. It was as close to perfect as I could have asked for and would use it on any console today if I could. Atari was good for what it was: an early at-home console with limited power. The controller fit the games well mostly, and it performed well, but it did get annoying having one hand as a paperweight. SNES was also not bad, but didn't really ever seem too comfortable. N64 might have changed now that they explained the third prong, but the button layout is just so tough to get back into after playing more modern consoles. DreamCast was actually pretty good and my controllers have held up for roughly 20 years. A little bulky with small triggers and very short wires, a little flat as well, but overall definitely useable. XBOX controllers were always odd to me and seemed really massive compared to its counterparts out there. GameCube controllers were actually really sturdy and had a fantastic size and weight, but the button layout with 1 bumper, and the oddly shaped ABXY layout always threw me off, but better than XBOX. Wii was good for the games it had, but not really comparable to the others. PS3 is the first one with real gripes. The controller was light, but always creaked when I held it, making sounds like it was going to snap apart. The controller was also way too small for my hands, and it was extremely annoying to play with. Xbox 360 was beautiful (as mentioned above). Would use on any console if I could get it to work right. PS4 is a pretty well-balanced controller. I don't use much of the fancy features and the pad is overwhelmingly useless to me (not bad, just a non-factor), but the shape is great and it is much more durable than the PS3. Much more sturdy, but I do miss the left dialog stick at the top. Xbox One is a controller I can't use. It's too bulky, too spaced out, breaks incredibly easily. We had Xbox Ones and PS4s in college and the Xbox One would always have stuck or missing buttons and the dialog sticks would wear so much faster. For comparison, I rotate my PS4 controllers when I play by myself, and they still have the grip after being used in that same environment in college to now. The Switch controllers are definitely different and I like the mobility, but I'm not a huge fan of the controllers. They're too flat, big, and small at the same time. But, they're definitely useable and mobile, so there's a bit of a tradeoff.

Tbh theres a fundamental problem with the whole concept of a controller- you hands are NOT designed for continous repetitive motion no matter how ergonomically designed it becomes. U can extend maybe a players comfort for a few more hours, but the human body is not designed for fixed repetitive motions HOURS on end. Thats why even office workers get carpal tunnel syndrome, arthiritis and severe eye strain over prolonged chronic repetitive use. Pro gamers suffer and take on the strain of countless hours of game play which pose risk of back injury, eye strain and arthiritis at the least. What's the best solution...seriously....variation in movement, taking frequent rest breaks to give the body at break. Thats just it. Cause the human body itself has their own limitations. We are designed for varied movements, not stressing the same muscles and tendons over and over again.

Driving and 3D platform games are dreadful with a keyboard, lack of gradual analog movement means constant readjustment with only binary inputs on the length of travel of the steering wheel or character in a game. Proper PC gamers keep an Xbox or Dual shock controller nearby for playing these games. Also many 2D platformer diehards would rather a flat dpad and buttons for faster button presses and transitions of movement, hence the many SNES USB controllers available.

I love the WiiU Gamepad simply because of the Logic of it all. It's got the joysticks where your thumbs rest (on top, great for FPS), and the large size and comfortable weight kept my hands from cramping. The screen and gyro mean that you can make micro-adjustments to your aim using motion, addressing the main problem with pure-stick aim. Some people hate it, and that's understandable, but I love the gamepad. The pro controller is alright too.

My favourite controller is mouse and keyboard because you actually have control - also games aren't dumbed down because controls aren't a limitation, Borderlands is easier on xbox because it knows you can't aim as well and so it makes it easier to aim but on PC it gives no help because you can look at an exact point immediately

Depends on the game, a joystick is actually a lot better than WASD movement because of the varying sensitivity. Consoles are also beginning to make more sense these days, although they are still rubbish for RTS or really any strategy game. Hopefully the next generation of consoles don't limit inputs, a thriving 3rd party controller market would actually be pretty cool and eliminate all but the graphics issue (which, lets be honest, graphics are not improving that quickly anymore so it's becoming far less of an advantage for PC). Although they'd have to let us use a mouse if they ever wanted to absorb the PC gamer market, which will likely never happen because of the massive advantage it provides over a joystick for aiming.

The part about Sony wanting to copy the SNES controller layout to make it easier for gamers to transition over is a half-truth at best and a flat out lie at worst. In 1993, Sony had a partnership with Nintendo to make a CD add-on for the SNES, the "Nintendo Play Station". Since it was just a CD add-on, they didn't need to make a controller and used the SNES controller for all their needs. When Nintendo secretly ripped up their contract and went with Phillips instead, that's when Sony ventured out to make the CD add-on it's own console, and re-branded it the "PlayStation". That's when Sony used the SNES controller as the basis for PlayStation, because it was what they were most familiar developing with. Heck, Sony didn't even think about adding analog sticks to their controller until after the N64 released! Sony is always aping Nintendo's best innovations in controller designs!

Some people can't process information quickly enough for fast talking. Because they're slow readers. This was presented so more people can think while the video rolls.

The modern Xbox controller is one of the best and has changed very little since the S controller on the original Xbox. ( the Duke is another story.)

Dualshock 3 was the peak for controllers. Thanks.

There's sort of an answer at 7:29 which states that since we're accustomed to the original controller designs with slight modifications (ps and xbox) there won't necessarily be new development in controller ergonomics and design.

Xbox's Duke controller was/is one of the most hideous and uncomfortable controllers ever made 🤷‍♂️ and I got big hands 😂

My favourite controllers? PlayStation DualShock 4 (though 2 and 3 are still great to hold and use) and the Wii U Pro Controller; these two are the most comfortable controllers to hold, and the designs are great - aligned analog sticks are, personally speaking, inherently superior to unaligned sticks, meaning Xbox's controllers and the Switch controllers are nowhere near as comfortable. Furthermore, because I grew up with the PS2 Slim and the DS Lite, I know exactly where each button is on the controller; A? Rightmost button. Y? Leftmost button? Cross? Bottom-most button. Triangle? Topmost button. I personally hate Xbox controllers and all PC controllers based on it, because they fail both these requirements - they have unaligned sticks and lettered buttons in the incorrect order for what I've used for over a decade. As for the Gamecube controller...it's hard to distinguish X and Y from each other without checking, the analog stick is stiff, and the C-Stick is small and in an awkward location - alongside being unaligned. The only time I prefer the Gamecube controller is when I'm playing Majora's Mask; it's much easier to pull off perfectly-straight Goron rolls using the Gamecube's octagonal analog stick boundary than it is using the 3DS's circular perimeter (the Goron section in the final area is HELL on 3DS, solely because it relies on dead-straight rolling and jumping on narrow platforms over a huge bottomless pit). As for the Wiimotes...don't even get me started; motion controls are nonfunctional garbage that automatically makes every single game that focuses on them instantly less enjoyable to play. Ugh. The Wii U made them a tertiary option, if not a non-option depending on the game; a decision that made that particular console my absolute favourite Nintendo home console - but Nintendo just HAD to bring motion controls back with the Switch...bastards.

That’s not a controller, it’s just the most broadly available interface. Even “gaming keyboards and mice” are still just office equipments stretching their ergonomics to the limit.

There is no perfect controller but there are ones that are best at different things, in my opinion, the GameCube controller is the most comfortable, while the ps4 or Xbox one controller are the most versatile. For the best aim, a mouse is needed.
