After over 20 years, Pokémon Snap is back! Today I take a look back at what made the original game so special, as well as speculate on why the Nintendo Switch "New Pokémon Snap" sequel might be even better.

What made the first Pokémon Snap such a beloved game, in my opinion, is the fact that we saw Pokémon for what they are in their purest forms: animals. When they’re not battling each other, they still creatures with their own desires and needs, like all animals irl. And seeing them this way, especially since the games and other media don’t really give us this kind of viewpoint of Pokémon, is really cool. I’m so glad it’s finally getting a sequel!

Imagine if such things were implemented in the main series games... How we could see the pokemon in the nature doing some things, like anything more than just having them walk around aimlessly... There's so much potential for stuff like this yet Gamefreak isn't using any of it. So frustrating

Does nobody remember before Blockbuster, nobody in my town liked blockbuster because it was so new and corportized and people were always trying to boycott them and have them shutdown. It put a lot of great movie rental places out of business. I rented Pokemon snap from one of the local movie rental places that had a sitting area where they would serve you soft drinks or tea for free and a snack and you could just chill and watch movies or play games. They were really awesome and cheap. Blockbuster was the new guy that came in and put everyone out of business. I still hate them but after everyone else was gone we didn't have any option but to use them. Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, and many other games I rented before we even had a Blockbuster.

I am a bit younger than this game but despite technically growing up in the gamecube/ps2 generation, my parents still had an N64 because they themselves were big nerds. Ever since I barely knew how to read, I played pokemon snap and loved every moment of it. I loved the fun and atmospheric music that always put you in an explorative mood, discovering brand new pokemon, and experimenting with the items in order to take better photos. I found the hidden signs and took pictures of the secret pokemon, Mew, all by myself. Pokemon snap was my first ever pokemon game so every time I saw something new I didn't say to myself "oh hey a gastly" or whatever, I thought "I have just found a never before seen creature and must chronicle it along with my other discoveries." But I think my favorite thing about the game is that Pokemon Island, where the game takes place, truly feels like a living breathing world that I could influence. I could go in one time in the beach and see a snorlax sleeping and a meowth get taken out by two pidgeys. later on I was able to make the snorlax dance and save the meowth, watching it dance happily. I could try to save all the jigglypuffs in the cave or spend several minutes playing with the vulpix in the volcano. I would frequently delete my save and start a new game just to relive the experience of playing through the main story. It's the kind of game that really sticks with you after you first play it and never lets go. Pokemon snap was probably my favorite game from that point in my life and although I had many games at the same time that many would consider superior like Smash Melee, Ocarina of time + Majora's Mask, and Mario Sunshine (as well as some more niche titles that carved a place in my heart like billy hatcher and mischief makers), Pokemon snap was the only one that I remember so fondly even today and the only one I've properly revisited as of now. Although thinking on it now, the real reason Snap was my favorite game was probably because I was so dogshit at videogames back then that it was the only one I could beat. to this day the only N64 zelda dungeon I've actually entered between the two games is the Great Deku Tree and I've only been up to ricco harbor in Sunshine.

I was born in 2000 and Snap is by far my favorite Pokemon spin off game. Everytime there has been a Pokemon direct I've been silently cheering and hoping they'd reveal a Snap 2 and I freaked out when they actually announced it and I'm so excited.

I am not old enough to have been able to play Pokemon snap when it came out, but one of the first things I watched on RU-vid when I was young that wasn’t mine craft was a Pokemon snap let’s play, so I still feel a bit of nostalgia towards it. Definitely hyped for the new one.

So, one of the reasons I love Pokemon Snap so much is that it was one of the only games my Dad and I would play together. He wasn't a gamer so and had a really busy work schedule, but this simple, fun relaxing game was something that two of us would constantly play together when I was a kid. My Dad passed away a few years ago now, and this new Pokemon Snap makes me look back and remember the good times. I can't wait to introduce my nephew to New Pokemon Snap

I first played Pokémon Snap in 2001, when I was eight. This was around the height of Poke-Mania, and I was all in on it, as were my cousins. One time when they came to my house for a few days, they brought their N64 with them. I had never played a video game before in my life, but I thought the game looked fun, so I gave it a try and loved it. After they went home, I almost immediately got an N64 of my own. The first two games I got for it were Mickey's Speedway USA (basically Mario Kart in a Mickey Mouse skin) and my very own copy of Pokémon Snap. Given how popular the game was and still is with fans and how long they've demanded a sequel, I'm amazed it took Nintendo this long to do it. In fact, it makes me wonder why they didn't do it sooner. I can understand Waluigi not being in Smash, but sitting on a Pokémon Snap sequel for over two decades is truly head-scratching.

Pokemon Snap was the first console Pokemon game, so at the time, it was a big deal seeing Pokemon in 3D on our TVs for the first time. Also, it came out in 1999 during the height of Pokemania, so anything Pokemon-related was huge. I remember getting this game Christmas '99, and staying up all night beating the game in one sitting

This game is so unbelievably important to me. Being 9 years old when the original launched, I got choked up seeing New Snap's reveal. I sincerely hope it can capture the joy and mystery of Pokemon for 9 year olds of today, and can give my 30 year old cynical brain a break from the real world.

Vitalij Brem don’t worry, TPC isn’t bothering to develop New Snap themselves. I trust Bandai Namco to do it well since they’ve done a fantastic job with Smash Ultimate. This game is gonna be GOOD.

Sadly Tencent most likely demanded their own presentation OR The pokemon company actually wanted to promote their new highly profitable mobile game with its own presentation... Either way TPC has become increasingly pathetic and I'm utterly disappointed in them.

I'm really glad wittz uploaded this. I know he had reservations because he felt like he missed his window. But I feel there is so much value in just expressing your opinion and personality on platforms like this. There are times where I miss my little dose of jwittz. I know streaming is also a vehicle for more casual expression, but it never feels the same. Even the little time between the inception of an opinion and posting quicker discussion style videos makes a world of difference when it comes to articulation and clarity. I know we will never get back to the nintendo news days but I hope wittz isn't afraid of lower production videos just to make his voice heard on the platform people know him best.

I'll be honest. I didn't grow up on this game. I was a sony kid enjoying crash and spyro at the time. One of my online friends learned this and showed me why it was a special game for them (and I guess alot of people). The game is short (completed in little over an hour), but it's also an interesting puzzle trying to get all the pokemon and get high scores by getting the highest quality pictures. Even as we went through it a couple days ago, we found secret bonus point yields he didn't even know about. Even knowing how deep getting some of these scores can get, what carried the whole experience to me was the metric ton of charm this game has. You lure vulpix through the path and they'll dance for you. You can feed charmander and they'll screech at you for more. You can help a meowth get some pidgey eggs. Saving all the jigglypuff gives you a concert at the end of the track. you bowl a mankey with squitrle shells. You can even see pikachu riding articuno. These were just a few highlights for me. Simply just watching all of it was a blast.

A wild area with randomly appearing pokemon who take randomized paths as you come across them would add so much replayability to the format of the game. One of the things that held the original game back was that the stages were the same every time you played them but obviously that's understandable for a N64 game. These days there's so much more they can do with the format if the developers are creative enough.
