Why We Need 4x4 - Slot Canyon & Missed Adventures - Full Time RV Living

As full time RVers we've learned the hard way that mud and soft sand are to be avoided like the plague - we've been stuck in both. Those marooned mishaps - and today's frustrating occurrence has taught us that we need 4x4.

When we first hit the road we thought we wouldn't need 4x4. We thought that two-wheel drive would serve us just fine and we'd leave the expenses, weight, and maintenance of four-wheel drive to mudders. However, in our nine months of full time RVing we've found just how incapable two-wheel drive is of navigating off-road.

Having lived in the desert, you may want to consider a handheld gps that doesn’t rely on cell service and can download topo maps. Carry chains they can help in sand. If your trailer has a hitch, maybe a small motorcycle/bike. When you camp, move the mount from the trailer to your truck and you can explore on the bike places where your truck won’t go. Carry a compressor in your truck so you can air down your tires and reinflate when back on firm ground. Don’t over deflate or you could pop the tire beads.

Good move knowing your vehicle limits. Have been all through this area and sometimes will come around a corner and hit very soft sand that builds up due to wind. Another thing is to be very aware of the weather. You do not want to be here when rain is happening even a few miles away. That’s how washes are made. There are a bunch of sculptures out there as well in the area between your location and ocotillo wells off road park. This is my first video watching the two of you and liked it very much. The presentation style works well voices are easy to listening to snd your enthusiasm for discovery brings excitement to the journey. Will be searching out and watching more. And yes, the wind just hoes on and on and on.

Very nice and entertaining clip. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure you know this but if you park your RV nose direct into the wind it will make it more stable. Also keeping your truck hitched to the RV will further stabilize it during those really strong winds. If you have a downloaded map of the area (there are apps) on your phone and a GPS on the device one can navigate even when there is no phone reception since GPS signals are pretty much everywhere. Thanks again.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 лет назад
Thank you Mike! That does make sense since a smaller side would be facing the wind, however our solar panels need to face south to be most effective, so we don't have much choice in which direction our RV faces. We'll keep in mind hooking the truck up to have more stability though! We'll keep in mind that we can download maps also and still have access to them via GPS. Thanks again Mike =)

In high winds, perhaps wearing clear swim goggles might be helpful to protect your eyes. The high winds sure can be rough there. The rock formations were stunningly beautiful. Thank you! Re/ a tow vehicle, there are also 4-wheel drive fuel trucks available.

Hi guys, another super video and isn't the canyon magical. Looks like it's been carved by the rain, wind and sand. Bryce Canyon in Utah is very similar in some ways. I think the holes in the rock faces are made by moisture seeping into the sandstone when it cools and when it freezes the ice pops out along with some rock. Cool experience. And very wise not to continue without 4x4 on your rig. Tacos look awesome! Stay safe guys and keep up the good work.

Just found you channel its great. I know you got a lot of good suggestions on 4x4. Should also consider a winch for current truck.. they arent that expensive and its worthwhile investment when in the boonies. Then later on, the 4x4 consider diesel . They pull like crazy if you ever go bigger on the trailer you already have the truck for it. in fact they drive better with weight when towing. Motors go forever 500k to 700k miles on those things is common. Good luck.

As always another great video. I pull my 5th wheel with a 4x4 and only needed 4 wheel drive once so far. When I go out exploring, I bring my folding ebike with fat tires along with me. It fits in the back seat area of the truck. I know that’s where the your pets ride, so you could put them in the bed of the truck. Since I do mostly boondocking, I also use it when I get to a new site, instead of unhooking the trailer I just pull it out to locate the best site. Very handy. Works great in the sandy washes and can get into some areas the Razor cannot.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 лет назад
Thank you! We boondock almost exclusively and unfortunately have needed 4x4 5 or 6 times now. We've gotten stuck in the mud and sand but have always been able to dig ourselves out or wait for the mud in our site to dry before pulling out. That ebike is a really good idea, unfortunately the bed of our truck is already completely full haha. We just get out and walk around to find a suitable site though. Thanks again =)

I wonder if you realize just how fast your climbing in the numbers. So much faster than the average tuber. It is, in my eyes, because you are so well rounded in the publics eyes. 1 Your pet owners and involve your pets throughout your video's. 2. You both have been together for quite a while but, your like the fresh new young married couple on the block. You aren't afraid to show your passion for each other. 3. You explain your video's really well and show awesome places. 4. You boondock and that draws one group, you camp in parks and that draws another group. 5. you have included your families in the video's, that hits another group. 6. your understanding and way of explaining technology draws another group.. You nd Jenny working as a team brings in another group. See how it goes ? Vaudeville called it a schtik. Giving your audience what they want. In your cases and other tubers, are showing real life travels, adventures, relationships as it really is ..

I enjoy your videos, one thing to keep in mind is that you can air down your tires quite a bit for traction in the sand. you wont believe how much more traction you'll get by dropping the pressure to 25 PSI or something like that. I've gone from buried in 4wd to drive anywhere I want just by letting air out Just carry a pump to bring them back up.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 лет назад
Thanks Korey we completely forgot about airing down the tires. If we get into a sticky situation we'll do that. We keep an air compressor in the bed of the truck so that is always an option. We also plan to get a set of tires that is better for off-road, but still made for the street. We've got all-season tires right now and they just have horrible traction off road haha.

The problem with a Subaru and others like it is the lack of ground clearance. Friends at Less Junk More Journey had a Subaru and were challenged by the lack of ground clearance. My Yukon XL 4WD has enough ground clearance that I can go most anywhere. You also want a vehicle that has a low range 4WD for those situations where you need added torque to pull out of difficult places. A Cherokee, Wrangler, Compass, etcetera have good ground clearance and the option of a low gear ratio in the 4WD. Also, make sure you can tow the vehicle without having to disconnect the drive shaft.

Thanks for sharing. You two made a wise decision. The soft sand could have been a big problem, especially with 2WD and those tires. Better to make it back to the trailer than to be stuck overnight in 30 degree temps and having to leave the truck and walk back to the trailer. 1. Even if you called a tow company, most will not go more than 100 yards off road, if even that. They say you must get to a hard top road and they will come for you. I know this from calling the tow companies in Baker, CA to see if they would come out into the Mojave Desert and they all said No! 2. Agree with what some of the others have said...Air Down the tires before going on soft sand. Also beneficial for having less vibration on washboard roads. And like they said...you must have the means to air back up after leaving the dirt roads. Check out the ARB pumps that run off of the battery. They are the best. 3. If you really did need help and had no phone service, you could communicate urgent and emergecy needs via the Garmin In-reach device or the Spot Generation-3. This way you could email or text your contact person to call the tow truck, or if needed send out an SOS for air or land rescue. 4. Next time check out the location of the parking lot on Google Earth and the outlet of the slot canyon, and then you would know which direction to take to get back to your truck. You could even plot the track and use your handheld GPS to guide you. Clearly I have been in your situation before as a solo off-roader. Take care and keep having a great and safe journey.

Thanks! Looking back on it, we're really happy we decided to turn back around. Getting stuck in that sand without any cell signal to call for a tow would have been a big problem. Dang I didn't know that most won't go 100 yards off road. And even if I could find one that would go a few miles off road to tow me out they would probably charge an arm and a leg!! We have a portable pancake air compressor in the bed of the truck that's always full of air so we'd be able to air the tires back up, but we'll look into the ARB pumps as well since I'm looking to get rid of that large compressor. Yeah you've got this all figured out, thanks for the information! You take care too =)

A new subscriber here! I find your vlogs very fun and interesting. I am glad I came across your channel! I don't mean to be negative, but I find the music sorta irratateing.It just repeats over and over, the same tune. Other than that I am enjoying watching you guys! Went back to the beginning and I am watching them all. But I have to say the same music over and over is a little bit nerve wracking. Other than that you have a great channel!

Did Slot Canyon: I swear to God it was in a Toyota Sienna (front-wheel drive only). The last stretch to drive to the trail there were, as I recall, two short spans where it looked like I might sink into the sand so, for some crazy reason, I gunned it and scooted across the sandy portions.

Thanks! Yeah we were pretty frustrated that we couldn't do the second hike, but we REALLY didn't want to get stuck without any signal haha. Our cat does not like Sweetie very much, they get along sortof until Sweetie gets in her face and tries to lick her in which case Butters will swat at her haha. Sweetie loves the cat though, but Butters just wants to be left alone.

You guys should consider installing an ARB air locker to deal with you 4x4 getting stuck worries.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 лет назад
Thanks for the tip I'll look into an ARB air locker. We've got a locking differential in the back but I'm sure that's not the same thing. We're also looking into replacing our tires with something a bit better off-road, but still good for the road. Right now all we have are all-season tires and they are garbage in sand. Thanks again.

love the vid but please get a couple Hydration Bladders. If for some reason you got loss or worse something fell on one of you, no such thing as too much water. Trust me, at fires, you can get in trouble quick when the sun is blazing down on you if you aren't properly hydrated. Also it's worth noting that many people have accts that viewers can donate to and for some strange reason if you post a PO BOX people will send free stuff to you.
@FateUnbound

Thanks Chris! We always carry two liter jugs of water with us when we go out, and there's another 750ml water bottle in the truck. Water is pretty heavy which is why we don't have a backpack with a hydration bladder in it. And we actually do have an account set up with PayPal as well as Patreon with links to both in every video description. They are www.paypal.me/fateunbound and www.patreon.com/fateunbound

I can't help but think that your puppy is very aptly named :-) Also wonder if you have a limited slip or locking differential, perhaps not ..... they can make a big difference. Ram calls it an "anti-spin" differential. We had a 2WD Ram without it and successfully pulled a 3500 lb travel trailer coast to coast. Then we bought a larger 6000 lb travel trailer and although it had enough power to pull the rig, it couldn't make it up our steep 40 degree driveway when we tried to leave on our first trip with it simply because the one driven wheel couldn't get enough traction. Imagine our surprise :-) Also can't help but be impressed by your sensibilities. Many others would have headed down that road with 2WD and not considered the consequences.
@FateUnbound
@FateUnbound 6 лет назад
Yeah she is a sweetie through and through, she's a huge lover! Our truck has a locking differential but it only helps so much. It's definitely better than having an open differential, but when both tires are in soft sand or slick mud you're sunk regardless haha. Wow that is an incredibly steep driveway and that is crazy that a drive tire was slipping even when towing trying to get up it! And thank you for supporting our decision. We were incredibly uncomfortable with continuing down that road and REALLY didn't want to get stuck without any cell signal! That would not have been fun...

Congratulations on finding the Slot. It is a hidden gem that many people miss. Too bad you didn't take Sweetie. I agree that you have to be careful at Anza Borrego about the Cholla and dogs. As you probably noticed though, the trail through the slot is pretty sandy. We have taken our goldies up the Slot a couple of times and they were fine (see this pic: c1.staticflickr.com/3/2203/2271633545_07b83dfe19_b.jpg ). They really seemed to enjoy climbing along the ledges on the walls of the wash. You are probably aware by now that Ocotillo Wells is a very popular off roading area. You can ride through miles and miles of the badlands out there. If you are staying a little longer out there, the desert wildflowers will be blooming. That can truly be spectacular.

@FateUnbound 6 лет назад
Thanks George! We loved our hike through the Slot, it was beautiful in there! That's a really cute picture, it looks like your dogs are having a great time. We've seen pictures of when the desert blooms and it does look incredibly beautiful, hopefully we're still around when that happens, but there's a good chance we'll be too far north by that time. Thanks again George!

If you're headed north you can catch the flowers at Death Valley or Carrizo Plain NM. The camping is good at both. Carrizo doesn't have cactus so it's great for hiking with Sweetie. It's right off of I5 if you're headed up that way. Here is one of our girls among the wildflowres: www.flickr.com/photos/lamsongf/6580090899/sizes/z/

Thanks Shane! Yeah our mic does pretty well as long as the wind isn't blowing perpendicular to the front of it since it is a shotgun/directional mic.
