Dr. Kit Miyamoto, an earthquake engineer, draws attention to the relationship between earthquakes and the architecture of outdated, dangerous buildings. Specializing in high performance earthquake engineering, disaster mitigation, response and reconstruction, Dr. Miyamoto showcases innovative architectural feats and techniques to suggest solutions to protect our children and ourselves from the risk of earthquakes not only in California, but also around the world. Dr. Miyamoto was the recipient of the National Council of Structural Engineers Association’s Excellence in Structural Engineering Award, ENR Best Global Projects Award and ASCE Humanitarian Award. He is a Fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers. He specializes in high-performance earthquake engineering, disaster mitigation, response and reconstruction. Dr. Miyamoto is an expert consultant to the World Bank projects globally, including a seismic risk mitigation project for 2,000 schools in Istanbul. In the 2010 Haiti earthquake, he worked with the government of Haiti, UN, USAID and various NGOs to conduct damage assessments of more than 430,000 earthquake-damaged structures and rebuild more than 12,000 buildings. He is currently involved with earthquake reconstruction in Nepal, where his team has completed over 1,000 assessments and is retrofitting severely damaged schools, monastries and high-rise buildings using high-performance engineering.

I'm that Jesus!! I was so honored to serve to my city as volunteer, firstable assessing damaged buildings and after as a Volunteer Rescue Engineer. I feel very happy about being mentioned by Kit but specially to know him and now working for the Mexico City Resilience.

I was in the two earthquakes in Mexico City. It's now February 2018 and they are still stalling on removing thousands of buildings teetering on collapse. This is why I pulled my kids from school. Even though they have higher standards of construction for schools in CDMX, the buildings all around the schools would take out the schools if they fell on them. Very important points made in this TED talk, thanks :-)

The structures in the earthquake collapse due to the deformation factor. If we check the deformation we will also check the failures. The deformation of the structures increases when the acceleration of the ground is great, the duration of the earthquake is long, and if the period of the soil and the construction coincide to be the same, the coordination is created, which increases the deformation. Catastrophic deformation is created by three factors 1) The inelastic bending displacement of the bearing elements 2) The tipping moment of the walls. 3) The subsidence of the soil. The inelastic bending displacement of all load-bearing elements (beams, columns and walls) is stopped if we prevent the bending of the vertical load-bearing elements. The bending of the vertical load-bearing elements is stopped when we choose (instead of placing columns) large walls of reinforced concrete of diaphragm function. The stiffness of the walls increases when we apply to them (using prestressing tendons) transverse compressive forces in their cross section With this design method, we stop the deformation resulting from the bending of the transverse support elements which deflects and bends and the trunks of the horizontal support elements. Wall overturning torque. What does not bend is more easily overturned. To prevent the rigid prestressing wall from tipping over, simply join the bottom of the prestressing tendon with a deep ground anchoring mechanism. With this design we stop the overturning of the wall which deforms the beams and breaks them. The retreat of the ground is prevented by the anchoring of the ground mechanism With this design we prevented the three factors that deform and destroy the structures in the earthquake. Basically if we check the deformation of the structures then it does not matter if the earthquake has great acceleration, long duration, and is coordinated with the construction, because we deflect the forces of the earthquake into the ground, preventing them from being directed at the cross sections of the nodes and breaking them.

stickloaf but for those living in Nepal, Japan, China, Mexico, Thailand, Mongolia, and all long the ring of fire, the chances are really very real. Remember, only a handful of people get eaten by a shark each year, but that is not much consolation to the families of those that die.

As much as he might be right, "think of the children" virtue signalling is red flag.

Yes, children are exploited by many, but Kit is talking to a real issue that threatens schools today. It's about preventing buildings from collapsing on kids. Pretty basic concept. No fraud going on here.

I have had to look at the photos of the destruction in China after the Szechuan earthquake and see the pictures and videos of parents searching for their children in the rubble of the collapsed schools. I can only imagine how they must have felt. Knowing that they cut so many corners in building those schools, stacking walls without structure and setting up real house of cards. It's damn right to "think about the children!" They had their whole lives in front of them but because some company didn't want to spend the right amount of money (not even extra) to ensure the buildings at least were structurally sound, those children died. So I hope it is a "Red Flag." One that signals children are literally our future.

No disrespect to anyone, but what was the true purpose of this video? It just seems more like fearmongering, in my opinion. Of course children aren't safe from earthquakes! No one is exempt from such disaster. Which is why I sincerely question what "the will of God" really means. Or, why such an Almighty deity would allow such hardship and misfortune on its own said creation? I find it very hard believing in anything these days. Everything we've been taught is a lie. Research is the only way to make sense of anything.

Most High child I see exactly what you mean, but these videos are seen by people who can make a change. It condenses important information into a video to make people want change and stive for it. Or at least I hope that is what it does.

Most High child Let me tell you small story. Once a man went to saloon to get his beard shaved.the barber who was shaving his beard saw that man reading Bible. So,he immediately asked a question 'if there really was a god why there is Soo much of poverty, pain, sorrow, hatred in this world'? The man made his beard shaved and was walking away... After a few minutes he walked into the saloon with a begger with full beard and long hair. He asked him 'why there was Soo many beggers without their beard get shaved'? Now the barber replied "he didn't came to me to get his beard shaved"! The man now replied "if the people in the world would seek God there will be no pain, suffering, hatred in this world"! Sorry for grammar 😅

Its not fear mongering. He's trying to get the point across that the buildings are not safe and that people should take action before its too late. It's going to collapse anyway when the earthquake comes so you can either demolish and rebuild or save allot of money and reinforce. Either way you are saving lives so it seems pretty logical to me..

Shyam Babu I get your point, but it doesn't apply to all, as many of us have literally "seeked God"/sought after "God" for our entire upbringings, since childhood when were first taught of such a Figure. However, just because we've done so, it doesn't necessarily mean that we'd ultimately find "Him". Well, at least, not in the contextualized way that we were taught we'd find "Him". Over the years, I've come to conclude on my own terms, that what we refer to as "God", is actually within us... Which may or most likely explains why most have yet to find "Him". They're looking everywhere, but within. The very breath that we breathe, is "God".l, in my overview. Likewise, all of the elements of nature, are "God". Etc. Etc.

Smelly Triangle I get your point as well. However, seeing as I'm always reading and researching things, and have come to realize just how predictively programmed we really are, for disaster (Especially in America)... it only makes me suspicious when I see or hear things that mirror or suggest it. Whether blatantly or subliminally. In which, there's lots of predictive programming going on these days. Blatantly AND Subliminally. I literally see it every day, and point it out to others, who seem to be so wrapped up in daily routines, that they are totally oblivious to these realities. Such as the sudden rise of military and war commercials being aired nowadays. As well as the many different war mentions and documentaries on various cable television networks. It's all predictive programming, to get "the people" mentally prepared for such an occurrence. Now, I'm not necessarily saying that this video here is promoting fear, or that it's predictive programming, but it surely is enough to get many folks shaken up. No pun intended. Images like these are responsible for many folks having disturbing thoughts, dreams, and nightmares, as well as increased episodes of anxiety and panic. However, I'm not saying that we should all walk around zoned out, ignoring reality or possibility... but as I said; for many, it can trigger episodes of anxiety and panic. Which is not good.
