Why We Only Learn When We Repeat

The School of Life

Our education system is based on the idea that we can learn things once, and that they’ll then stay in our minds throughout our lives. That’s far too optimistic. Our brains are like sieves. If anything is going to remain in them, we need regular reminders of what really matters. Fascinatingly, religions always understood that.

“One of the most obvious but striking things about a modern education is that you go through it only once. You show up every day for a number of years, get filled up with knowledge and then, once you’re twenty-one or so, you stop - and begin the rest of your life…”

It's not so much learning through repitition, because even with repitition you still tend to forget. You mostly learn through reflection and application, when you reflect and understand the purpose of what you are learning and the value thereof, that's when knowledge is stored and well, applying it.
@ahmedshinwari
@ahmedshinwari 7 лет назад
You have a good point about reflecting upon newly learnt knowledge... However, nothing stays in mind until one encounters it on regular basis. For individual that is habit. For a group of people that is culture.
@JakeByrnePhD

I'd argue better learning comes from iteration (I prefer that term rather than repetition, as it can imply some variation as well as a repeated theme). Reflection and application are examples of such an iterative process). But I come from a social constructivist perspective, versus the filled pail (or sieve) metaphor.
@ConsistenTea
@ConsistenTea 7 лет назад
Reflection is ok. But, if you really read a book, and marked it as your favorite, you just try to read it again. You'll see that even after having multiple reflection on the same book, you'll find so many things that you may feel you read for the first time, or you realize you read it but didn't thought about it this way.

Umm, failing over and over again at the same point, making the same mistake would be hell. Gaining wisdom means failing and learning to avoid the same mistakes for the future. Let's rephrase it as "Remind yourself daily of what's important in a ritual manner". I think that's the intention of your post...

There's also a neurological explanation for this, pertaining to the myelin sheath. There seems no substitute for repetition, and a true anti-ageing practice (as the myelin dies off in the brain, and is especially attacked by illnesses such as Parkinson's and Dementia) would be to learn something new and complex in the 2nd half of your life; the violin, perhaps. Or Japanese, or carpentry.

the reason why we study so much with comparatively little repetition in school is because we have accumulated so much knowledge. Everyone has their own path to take in the field of their choosing. Schools have many functions, but one of their main functions in higher school education is to prepare you for university and what you will learn there. As you can expect everyone to study something different, you want your students to have at least heard the most important concepts of every field so they have an easier time in university. The matter of fact is that a mathematician has no need whatsoever for interpretation of poetry and a translator does not need to know how to solve integrals. Learning is beautiful; but just continuing to study without having a proper job at the end of it can cause lots of suffering, so people should better focus on getting good in only 1 area of expertise and focus practice of repetition on that 1 field.

I think this video might be my favorite across all amazing videos from this channel. As a language learner, I have been listening a lot of tips and lessons from polyglots, and the key of their success is, likely, repetition. Establishing habits around the things you wanna keep in mind, learning new things and revisiting previous concepts is the "secret" of lifelong (and maintained) learning. Not just for languages, but for anything, I guess.

We should make our own midnight prayers whether that is reading a book, writing a piece, or just contemplating on life love this idea! Midnight prayers are often said to have more rewards in religion. This is for a reason, our will and purpose should be strong enough to make us stay awake till midnight or wake up in the middle of the night, and it is the perfect time to reflect and have deep thoughts about life in the serenity of the night when everyone else is asleep. 3:30 thanks for sharing insightful videos the school of life!

As a teacher I experienced numerous times during 'teacher training' and 'professional development' the instructor handing out some papers, or talking about a book. Invariably if I read the hand out 2-3 times waiting for the class to begin, or if I read the book a second time - I understood more about what they were paid to teach us than they did. What's worse than sad, pathetic, is that it wasn't that difficult to read and re-read until understanding. (What's absolutely ridiculous is how much money I made from books and articles I've read. There is a downside. The money is good, but you don't have a feeling of accomplishment because in the end it wasn't at all difficult. You have to challenge yourself in other ways.) The first day of teacher training, I sat through a three hour lecture and took notes while someone with a PhD in education lectured. Their first words? "These are the most important theorists of education, while I haven't read their books I've read about them."

@sorella1259
@sorella1259 4 года назад
It was incredibly pompous. Clearly he has a biased view of religion. The problem is that atheists make blank assumption that all religions are created equal. What he failed to mention is that repetition is very hard to develop into a virtue - boredom or lack of meaning - yet easily into a vice. What’s the point? The theological basis of repetition is Liturgy. Repetition can not ever really take off without the virtues of faith & hope. Now ask oneself why Liturgy is a constant cycle of repetition, without the empty and superficial mantras of “indoctrination”. There is a theological & philosophical meaning behind it that goes far deeper than the comparatively shallow practical application given in this video

Outstanding!!!! Keeping people going to church every week is exactly why dangerous and backwards ideologies continue to permeate. We're finally reaching an age where we break free from these mindsets, and understand that love and forgiveness and spirituality is not dependent on believing in an imaginary man in the sky. We have to force ourselves to refresh our minds constantly with the knowledge that matters most, or we'll start acclimating to crazy beliefs from whatever else we're continuing to fill our heads with.

"Repetita iuvant" in Latin means loosely "repeated things help." We imperfect humans definitely need to form habits of the mind in order to learn and to retain knowledge. Virtues are good habits as well. I think the computer age has people thinking that our minds are like a micro chip in which you download information and it stays there. Obviously, this is not the case.

Leitilumo It is not "required" to memorize it word for word, that word is actually used when Allah wants to remind us about behaving well, doing good deeds etc. We repeat verses of the Quran in our prayers to remember ourselves of God and guard ourselves from performing bad actions. It's really easy to attack something you don't know/it's foreign to you. Keep believing what the media says, they are sadly just targeting us because it fits perfectly in their selfish agenda; we just want to live peacefully by the truth.

we can't learn what we don't use. What we use is what we repeat; therefore, we learn through repetition if and only if it is motivated by the idea of practicality.

The difference is that religions only expect you to learn one thing (i.e. one book). When you're open to everything available in the modern world you do not need to revisit everything once you've grasped most of it because there is an nearly infinite amount of more in depth knowledge on the same subject (which is a kind of repetition but in addition also has new things as well).

Aristotle said the same thing: virtue through habituation. You can't just learn about bravery and instantly become brave. You have to repeatedly carry out the act of bravery (or at least try to be just a little foolhardy once in a while). Then, you can have the knowledge of when one should be brave. Also, just learning something isn't enough. You have to utilize that knowledge in the real world. Knowing that in an emergency someone should call 911 is good only if some actually calls.

I think that the thing that should be repeated are the ideas themselves, and by WRITING or speaking about them (i.e. actively rehearsing) rather than rereading them, which is a passive rehearsal, and only encourages familiarisation with some stimulus (be it book or lecture or novel). Also, religions do it for similar passive reasons. To make the person passively thinking (not thinking for themselves) and to indoctrinate them.

Rote memorization is inferior to holistic learning. When you explore the background of an idea, its relation to other ideas, give it practical value, imagine/symbolize the concepts visually or in relation to other senses and when you also change your perspective so that you make the subject more interesting to you (for an example, seeing history as an epic story instead of a collection of facts), the information will stick with you a lot better. The brain is not a computer, it's an interconnected network of meanings.

As hereditary, psychological viruses, religions have undergone a natural selection in favour of effective mechanisms for their sustenance and proliferation. Anyhow, glad to see aware of the retrieval effect too, though another core failure of (particularly higher) education is the notion that things must be memorised. We now have the ability to externalise memory. As long as we have a good index, memorising of the most useful (most frequently used) information will naturally follow from use of such a resource.

This is incomplete. The goal is memorization and understanding. Not repitition for repetitions sake. The key to proper retention is an exponential increase in time between repetition. Review your flashcards every e^x minutes. X being a whole number.

You need to visit the neuralogical basis of learning to drive this idea home. Repetition is about creating new and diverse neural connections relating to the same and similar information. The amount of repetition required depends on the complexity of the information, the level of abstraction the information represents, and the adequate interconnectivity between various related lower level abstractions. You can tell someone that the laser and atomic bomb are quantum mechanical devices, and most people will have no problem remembering that idea after hearing or reading it only one time. At the lowest level, this is simply a string of related nouns and verbs, which most modern people are familiar with. It is a simple matter to categorize the ideas of a laser and an atomic bomb along with the possibly new term of quantum mechanics, and say, "Ok, I got it. These concepts are related.", and continue on. It is a simple matter of relating the words in a single context. But to teach the same person the scientific and mathematical details of how these devices work is an entirely different matter. The comprehension of this requires a vastly more complex heirarchy of abstraction than remembering the context of a string of words. That abstract heirarchy is built upon neural connections. The key to learning by repetition is varying the manner and context in which the information is dispensed. The more you acquire the same information through different neural pathways, the wider the spread of contextual interconnectedness throughout the brain. Once the information has been 'wired' through so many various pathways it is easier to remember because it has a greater chance of receiving a hit when any part of the brain is stimulated. Its good to hear the information along with seeing the information displayed in various ways, and then explained again in different contexts, and sometimes even in a song. For some reason melodies and lyrics are easier to remember than unenhanced information. Science and engineering students often resort to memnonics and lymerics to remember theorems or short strings of a complex idea. It is accessing a different pathway and abstracting the information in a different way. When learning mathematics and science I try to receive the same information through many different sources, sometimes listening to 6 different lecturers and reading several different textbooks just to create some variation and stimulate different pathways of thought. The information never truly makes sense until I can relate it to something real, some other idea that I have a strong familiarity with. Relating new information and incorporating it into your everyday life is helpful to provide meaningful repetition. Possibly the best way to learn anything is to teach it to someone else. It has often been said that the true test of whether you properly understand a complex subject is if you can teach it to a child. This is great because it forces you to break the subject down into simple and meaningful absractions, and forces you to reorganize the concepts in a logical, progressive heirarchy of abstraction.

It should be, "Why we learn only when we repeat." It is the repeating that is the exclusive focus. You do more than just learn when you repeat. You focus, study, absorb etc.

But India's education system makes you repeat the same thing a million times, and you end up feeling sleepy af. I think India's and USA's education systems are polar opposites and a good education system would be somewhere in the middle of the two

Another idea that will change my life. Now I understand better why I always revisit some contents in books, films, songs and even in RU-vid channels: so that I do not unlearn valuable things by trusting solely my memory. That said, it is possible as well, on the other hand, to let go unwanted behaviors, ideas, habits and beliefs that harm or no longer speak to us by not repeating them. It obviously sounds easier then it is, but it's the same movement consciously applied in the opposite direction. There are extra words in the subtitles in 2:49.
